(Feb. 10, 2010) - A plan to get the winter sports season in the Dulles District and Region II back into action on Saturday has been snowed under by Wednesday's blizzard which added another 10 inches or so of snow to the already 30 on the ground in Loudoun.
Winter sports for the seven Dulles District schools (Briar Woods, Broad Run, Dominion, Freedom, Loudoun County, Park View and Potomac Falls) will not resume until President's Day, Monday Feb. 15, with the possible exception of the Region II wrestling meet.
Here is a full update from Freedom High School athletic director Matt Oblas:
As of Wednesday, 7:30pm.
Athletes, Parents, Coaches--
Bad weather has forced the cancellation of the following Saturday events: District Swim, District Gymnastics, District Forensics, and Region Academic. The following email updates the status of scheduled events:
GYMNASTICS--Because of Saturday's district meet cancellation, the State Qualifier Meet will be held Monday, February 15 at Potomac Falls HS. This will now be a combo District Championship/State Qualifier Meet. Times and Details TBA. A new format will be announced shortly.
SWIMMING--Ongoing coordination with Claude Moore Recreation Center continues. The district championship meet will hopefully take place Monday at Claude Moore. If we are able to hold a district meet Monday, the Dulles District will not compete in Monday's Region II Meet. If facility arrangements cannot be made with Claude Moore, only region qualifiers will compete in the Region Championship scheduled for Monday, February 15 at the Warrenton Aquatic Center. Region Warm-ups would begin at 9am and competition begins at 11am. Times for a district meet are TBA pending facility availability. A definite decision regarding swim should be available sometime Thursday.
WRESTLING--Region Championship at James Wood HS is now TBA. Details will be made available as soon as a decision is made.
FORENSICS--District Championship is now scheduled for next Saturday, February 20 at Potomac Falls HS. Details and times TBA.
ACADEMIC (Broad Run and Park View only)--Region competition iat Charlottesville HS will not take place this Saturday. Rescheduled date is TBA.
BASKETBALL--This is the same as announced earlier today--The regular season is complete and games will not be made up.
The girls basketball one game playoff between Freedom and Loudoun County will be played Monday, Februrary 15 at Park View HS at 2pm. Freedom is the home team on the scoreboard and will wear white. Loudoun County is away and will wear blue.
This means that all freshmen and JV seasons are complete. This was due to the calender and the officials unable to cover them due to so many schools in Virginia needing to make up and start tournaments. This is unfortunate, but we felt we must move forward with the Varsity Tournaments so that all schools would be included (not reduce tourney to 4 teams).
The boys and girls All-District Meeting will be held Monday, February 15 at 4:30pm at Park View HS.
The tournament will begin next week and teams will be seed with records to date.
The first round of the Dulles District Basketball tournament will be played Wednesday, February 17 at high seeds (Boys sites--#2 seed Broad Run, #3 seed Park View, #4 seed Briar Woods. Girls sites--#2 seed loser of Freedom/Loudoun County game, #3 seed Potomac Falls, #4 seed Broad Run).
The semifinals and finals will be played as scheduled 2/18-2/20 at Freedom HS. Girls Semis on 2/18, Boys Semis on 2/19, and Finals on 2/20 (girls at 6 and boys at 8)
SPRING SPORTS--Will start as scheduled on Monday, February 22. Turn in physicals and paperwork to the athletic office.
THANK YOU everyone for your patience and get ready to compete (finally!).

Re: Gymnastics.... I overheard at my daughter's gym this afternoon that the Dulles District meet has been moved to Sunday, with the state qualifying meet on Monday. I can't find any info. posted anywhere about this. Does anyone know for sure that this is the new schedule?
ReplyDeleteIt's true ... both meets will be at Potomac Falls starting at 3 p.m. -- Dulles District on Sunday and A/AA on Monday!
