News: LoCo Elite 5 Football and Volleyball - Updated!
(Aug. 31, 2010) - The Loudoun Times-Mirror and VivaLoudoun.com are teaming up this fall to present the LoCo Elite 5 -- a top five rankings for football and volleyball among Loudoun's 12 public high schools.
Here are our picks after the first week of action ... with a word from VivaLoudoun editor Dan Sousa about each pick:

The Skinny: Viking senior quarterback Andrew Taylor threw for five touchdowns and 189 yards on 11 of 18 passing as the Vikings and senior David Mellstrom accounted for four touchdowns including two returns as Valley flew past the Titans. Also for Valley - Junior Donald Devine ran for 130 yards on 19 carries and had a rushing and receiving TD. Mellstrom caught TDs and had 65 yards on three catches. He also had 111 yards in punt returns including a 75-yard score and he had an 85-yard kickoff return for a score on the season's opening kick. The Vikes defense forced five turnovers. Titan senior and West Virginia recruit Deandre Reaves finished with 145 yards rushing on 21 attempts but was just 3 of 11 for 37 yards and two interceptions at quarterback.
Loudoun County 14, Musselman (WV) 13
The Skinny: Raider junior Marcus Crews made his debut at quarterback a winning one with a rushing touchdown and 233 yards in the air on 20 of 26 passing including a 70-yard score to senior Jack Reimers, who finished with 156 yards on eight receptions. Junior RB Antonio Rutherford gained 83 yards on 14 carries for County. Musselman missed an extra point and three field goal attempts in the loss.
Sherando 35, Park View 32
The Skinny: The Warriors and Patriots combined for 36 points in a wild fourth quarter but Park View fell just short in a comeback bid to make new coach Ferris Eways a winner in his PV debut. Pat junior Alec Dombkowski made his debut at QB with three TD throws and a TD run.

The Skinny: Panther senior Marquis Vasciannie scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 2-yard dive with six minuets left int he game to make Mike Gims a winner in his debut as the Panthers new head coach. Sophomore John Fischetti also made his debut, at quarterback, throwing for 184 yards on 13 of 34 pass including a 77-yard TD to junior Kyle Bulger, who finished with 102 yards receiving on four catches.

Football: Jessop Throws Three TDs as Griffis Opens Broad Run Coaching Debut With Shutout
(Aug. 31, 2010) - Connor Jessop threw for three touchdowns and 173 yards on 9 of 11 passing and picked up another 57 yards rushing to make Matt Griffis a winner in his Broad Run High School coaching debut as the Spartans shut out Fauquier, 21-0, Friday in Ashburn.
While Griffis was making his debut the win was nothing new for the Spartans as it continued their 29-yard winning streak overall, which includes back-to-back Division 4 state titles, and was the school's 31st straight regular-season victory.
Jessop, who led Broad Run to the state title last year as a sophomore threw TD passes to Steven Field (56 yards), Matt Preziotti (23 yards) and Caleb Lindsey (44 yards).
Griffis took over the Broad Run program after Mike Burnett left to start the Tuscarora High School program. Griffis had been a long-time offensive coordinator under Mickey Thompson at Park View and then Stone Bridge.

Football: Clements Field Goal with 10 Seconds Left Caps Dramatic 91-Yard Drive for Briar Woods
(Aug. 31, 2010) - Briar Woods High School freshman quarterback Trace McSorley calmly led the Falcons on one of their most dramatic drives in school history -- leading the Falcons from their own 9 into game-winning field goal position with only 2:37 to play -- to set up junior David Clements 20-yard kick with 10 seconds left that lifted Briar Woods to a 10-8 victory at Millbrook Friday.
McSorley finished the night 16 of 31 for 170 yards including a 25-yard completion to Alex Carter on the winning drive as well as an 18-yard completion to Cameron Serigne on 4th-and-10 to keep the drive alive. McSorley had to step up as senior running back Michael Brownlee was limited to just one carry on the night before exiting with an injury and his replacement, junior Ryan Bumbray went out in the second half with an injury.
Briar Woods was nursing a 7-0 lead -- junior Mark Leith scored on a 1-yard plunge in the second quarter -- when the host Pioneers went ahead in the fourth quarter on a safety on a Briar Woods holding penalty in the end zone and then a touchdown pass with just 6:08 to go.
The Falcons failed to pick up a first down, wasting a 40-yard kickoff return by Carter, and turned the ball over the Millbrook at midfield with 4:39 to go. The Falcons defense then rose to the occasion with Josh Hall and Joe Rizzardi both making big tackles. Millbrook punted and pinned Briar Woods inside its own 10 with just 157 seconds to play but that was just enough time for McSorley and company.

Football: Tuscarora Opens with Big Win Over Woodgrove
(Aug. 31, 2010) - Earlier in the week, Tuscarora High School football coach Mike Burnett said he wouldn't know how his young team would react under the lights on Friday night as the yet-to-open school was set to host the area's other new school, Woodgrove, in a contest that was obviously historic for both programs.
Burnett got his answer before the lights even kicked in as his Huskies marched efficiently down the field on a 72-yard scoring drive to open the game and with touchdowns on three of their first four possessions, Tuscarora was well on its way to a 33-21 victory. Cross Country: Loudoun County Boys, Girls Start 2010 Season Strong; 10 Area Teams Compete at Great Meadows
(Aug. 30, 2010) - The Loudoun County High School boys and girls got the 2010 cross country season off to a flying start with a pair of top five finishes at the competitive Great Meadows Invitational Saturday including the Raiders boys eyebrow-raising second place finish.
In all, 10 of the 12 schools from Loudoun opened the cross country season at the meet.
The Loudoun County boys, led by Tommy Curtin's fourth place finish at 16:05, scored 143 points to take second behind private school power Gonzaga (92). The Raiders won the tiebreaker with one of the top-ranked teams in Virginia, Riverbend, and edged Region II rival Brentsville by a point.
The Loudoun County girls were fifth with 172 points in the meet won by the Bishop O'Connell girls with 55 points. Alex Juzbasich a sophomore from new Woodgrove, took seventh with a 19:51 for the top area girls finish.
Freedom freshman Siobhan O'Toole won the JV Girls Freshman-Sophomore race with a 21:32 and classmate Peter Stephens was second at 17:43 in JV Boys Freshman-Sophomore race.

Band: Potomac Falls to Preview Fall Halftime Show on Wednesday
(Aug. 30, 2010) - The Potomac Falls High School Marching Band will perform its halftime show, entitled “Mangione Magic,” at 6 p.m. Wednesday, September 2nd, at the high school.

(Aug. 30, 2010) - The Loudoun County Department of Economic Development is hosting a Redskins Trivia Contest every day for the next two weeks on the department’s page on Facebook.
Loudoun County is the corporate home of the Washington Redskins and the department is encouraging business leaders and residents to take part in the events surrounding Redskins Week, which begins September 7, and ends with the opening game against the Dallas Cowboys on September 12.
Every day for the next two weeks, the department will post three daily questions on its Facebook page. The first person to answer all three questions correctly will win a Redskins Fan Pack. Check out the details of the contest at http://www.facebook.com/LoudounEconomicDevelopment.

Volleyball Round-up: Potomac Falls Sweeps William Monroe Classic; Tuscarora Wins First Ever Volleyball Match
(Aug. 30, 2010) - Potomac Falls High School bounced back from a season-opening loss to Heritage on Thursday to sweep the William Monroe Classic on Saturday with a 4-0 mark. Tuscarora High School won its first ever volleyball match with a sweep over Handley.
In other volleyball action, Dominion beat Washington-Lee in four games Saturday; Briar Woods dropped Fauquier in four games; and Woodgrove fell to Millbrook in four games.

News: VivaLoudoun and Clarke County Sports Announce Media Partnership
(Aug. 30, 2010) – VivaLoudoun and Clarke County Sports announced today that they have entered into a media partnership aimed at broadening their coverage of high school sports in Loudoun County, Clarke County and the Winchester area.
As part of the media partnership some content will run on both VivaLoudoun.com and ClarkeCountySports.com and the two locally-owned media ventures will look to share resources wherever they can.
“I have known Moe for a long time and enjoyed in the past when he was able to provide content for our previous website,” said VivaLoudoun editor and founder Dan Sousa. “Now that we are entering year two of VivaLoudoun, it will help our coverage to be able to share the coverage Moe provides, especially since his coverage area is especially important come regional playoff time.”

Baseball: Heritage's Brandall Peters to Play for North Atlantic Region Team
The North Atlantic team, with players from 12 different states, will travel to USA Baseball National team's training complex in Cary, North Carolina where they will play teams representing the Gulf Coast, Southwest, Southeast, Northwest, Midwest Plains, and the Great Lakes regions.
On Sept. 9, the North Atlantic team will play for USA Baseball scouts with the prospect of earning a chance to play in the 16U USA Baseball Team trials during the Spring.
Peters on his recent success: "I just work hard and pray. And everyday I thank God for giving me the opportunities and the great life he has given me. So this shows that you can do whatever you want if you work hard and pray."

Baseball: California Team Edges Florida in Babe Ruth 14-Year-Old World Series Rematch
(Aug. 30, 2010) - Tri-Valley, the team from Pleasanton, Calif., that lost the 13-Year-Old Babe Ruth World Series championship game a year ago to Tallahasse, Fla., by a run, 8-7, turned the tables on Saturday at Fireman's Field by beating the Florida squad in a rematch, 1-0, to claim the 14-Year-Old Babe Ruth World Series title.
Saturday started out like most days — the sun rose in the east and we switched on the morning news to catch the weather update with a hot cup of coffee. History does repeat itself occasionally, because that's exactly how our day started the last time we were scheduled to play Tallahassee in the World Series final game in Utah in 2009. Saturday, we would face them again at 1 p.m. at Fireman's Field in Purcellville, Virg., to avenge our loss last year and with no other goal than to bring home all the hardware and the National Title.
Jake Dronkers was the star of Saturday's title game, throwing a 2-hitter for the win and scoring the game's only run in the second inning on a David Gomez sacrifice fly after he led off the inning with a bloop double and moved to third on a fielder's choice.
Tallahasse had runners at the corners in the fourth with a two-out rally, but Dronkers struck out a hitter to strand the men on base. Tallahassee had a runner on in the sixth but he was thrown out at second base attempting to steal.
Tri-Valley had the bases loaded in the top of the seventh inning but couldn't push across an insurance run. Dronkers retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh to set off the California celebration on the hot afternoon.
Tri-Valley's Casey Soltis, breaking the Babe Ruth World Series record for most hits and most RBIs, received the All-Tournament World Series Most Valuable Player award.
Saturday started out like most days — the sun rose in the east and we switched on the morning news to catch the weather update with a hot cup of coffee. History does repeat itself occasionally, because that's exactly how our day started the last time we were scheduled to play Tallahassee in the World Series final game in Utah in 2009. Saturday, we would face them again at 1 p.m. at Fireman's Field in Purcellville, Virg., to avenge our loss last year and with no other goal than to bring home all the hardware and the National Title.
Jake Dronkers was the star of Saturday's title game, throwing a 2-hitter for the win and scoring the game's only run in the second inning on a David Gomez sacrifice fly after he led off the inning with a bloop double and moved to third on a fielder's choice.
Tallahasse had runners at the corners in the fourth with a two-out rally, but Dronkers struck out a hitter to strand the men on base. Tallahassee had a runner on in the sixth but he was thrown out at second base attempting to steal.
Tri-Valley had the bases loaded in the top of the seventh inning but couldn't push across an insurance run. Dronkers retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh to set off the California celebration on the hot afternoon.

Golf Roundup: Broad Run, Dominion, Park View and Potomac Falls Score Dulles Wins
(Aug. 27, 2010) - Broad Run High School has taken its lumps in tournament play this season but the Spartans improved to 3-0 in Dulles District duals with a three-stroke win over Briar Woods at Lansdowne on Thursday. Dominion derailed Freedom by 14 strokes at Trump National, 157-171, and in narrow victories, Park View edged Woodgrove by eight strokes at Stoneleigh and Potomac Falls edged Tuscarora by four strokes at Raspberry Falls.
Also on Wednesday, Stone Bridge improved to 2-0 in Liberty District Duals win a win over South Lakes.

Baseball: All-American (Almost) Semifinals for 14-Year-Old Babe Ruth Baseball World Series
Purcellville (Aug. 27, 2010) - It is an All-American (almost) semfinals for the 14-Year-Old Babe Ruth World Series as the American Division No. 2 and No. 3 seeds swept their quarterfinal games on Thursday with shutouts.
When the draw was made for the World Series it was evident that the American Division was a powerhouse with three teams returning from the 13-Year-Old World Series including champion Tallhassee, Fla., Pleasanton Calif. and Williamsport, Penn. ... and all three teams have advanced to tonight with Pleasanton (4-1) facing the lone remaining National Division team, top seed Waite Park (3-1), Minn. at 5:30 p.m. and then Tallahasse (4-0) taking on Williamsport (3-2) at 8 p.m. at Fireman's Field.
The winners will play for the World Series title Saturday at 1 p.m.

News: Dulles District Appears the Winner as Region II Levels the Playoff Playing Field with Expanded Format
(Aug. 26, 2010) - Region II has unveiled a new payoff format that addresses previous unequal representation in a region where the Dulles District, with nine schools, is almost twice as large as the Northwestern and Evergreen districts, which each have five schools.
The Dulles District appears the winner in the new format that will see some sports (volleyball, baseball, softball, girls and boys soccer) expand to an 11-team regional tournament with four of the teams qualifying from the Loudoun County-based Dulles District. In the past just two Dulles District teams from each sport moved onto regional play.
In addition, football and basketball, which run their regional playoffs based on VHSL criteria, have expanded their Division 3 and Division 4 playoffs in Region II from six to eight teams, eliminating the need for first round byes.

Heritage High School Athletic Directory Ron Petrella is also a civil celebrant (Virginia's version of a Justice of the Peace) and the cancer survivor raises money for cancer research by donating his fee for officiating at weddings to the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. |
(Aug. 26, 2010) - After Ronald Petrella was diagnosed with cancer in 2004, he decided to create a “bucket list” of things he wanted to do in his life time. They included going to Fenway Park and Lambeau Field, buying a convertible, and becoming an ordained justice of the peace. He’s not only accomplished all of those things – he’s turned his status as a justice of the peace (or civil celebrant as justices are known in Virginia) – into a way to raise funds for the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life.
During his four years of officiating at weddings, he’s raised thousands of dollars for the Western Loudoun Relay event in Loudoun County, Virginia. This year alone, he’s raised $5,436, and he has seven weddings scheduled before the end of the Society’s fiscal year on August 31.
Volleyball Round-up: Briar Woods, Loudoun Valley Open Season With Wins
(Aug. 26, 2010) - Both Briar Woods High and Loudoun Valley High School opened the 2010 season with victories on Tuesday with the AA Falcons coming back to beat Kettle Run and the defending AAA state champion Vikings needed four games to beat Fauquier.

Midlothian (Aug. 26, 2010) - The Loudoun Valley High School golf team, playing without its top individual athlete, finished 12th in a tough 23-team field at the 4th Annual Virginia State Golf Association Foundation High School Invitational two-day event that wrapped up Wednesday at Independence Golf Club.
Volleyball: Two Stone Bridge Players Verbally Commit - Class of 2011 Amy Christensen to UConn and Class of 2012 Alex Heyn to Ohio State
(Aug. 26, 2010) - Showing its depth and talent, Stone Bridge High School has already had two volleyball players verbally commit to NCAA Division I college scholarships including Class of 2011 Amy Christensen, who will play at the University of Connecticut, and Class of 2012 Alex Heyn, who will play at The Ohio State University.
Christensen, who can play defense as well as she can play the front row, and the 6-foot-4 Heyn helped the Bulldogs to a spectacular 22-3 record last year with the team falling short of the state tournament after setter Amanda Miller broke her leg in the Liberty District tournament.
Both play in the Virginia Elite program with Christensen with the 17s and Heyn with the 16s. Heyn joins Elite teammate Breanna Atkinson, an Ashburn native that plays for the private Madiera School, as an early Class of 2012 commitment. Atkinson will play for Duke starting in the fall of 2012.

(Aug. 26, 2010) - Broad Run High School senior Emily Sears has verbally committed to play NCAA Division I volleyball starting in the Fall of 2011. Sears will join older sister Lauren, a junior this season on the Golden Eagles roster.
In addition, Sears will become the third sister to play college volleyball as older sister Sarah Sears played at Stetson University. Father David and mother Kimberley also both played college volleyball with Davide at The Ohio State University and Kimberley at Missouri State.
Southern Miss is coming off a 27-5 season in which the Golden Eagles won the program's first Conference USA title while producing a plus-10 turnaround over 2008. The team will be led first year coach Abbey Sutherland, who was evaluated after four years seasons as an assistant when head coach Ricci Luyties left to take over the U.C. San Diego program in the spring.
Sutherland eturns 10 letterwinners including five starters. Baseball: Six Teams Head Into Single Elimination at Babe Ruth 14-Year-Old World Series Including Unbeaten Defending Champion Tallahassee
Purcellville (Aug. 26, 2010) - After five days of exciting pool play at Fireman's Field six teams moved on to today's single elimination play in the Babe Ruth baseball 14-Year-Old World Series including defending 13-Year-Old World Series champion Tallahassee, Fla. which was the only team here to go 4-0 thus far.

Boys Soccer: Potomac Falls Grad Shanosky Recalled Into U.S. U-20 National Team
Washington, D.C. (Aug. 26, 2010) - D.C. United announced today that midfielder Conor Shanosky has been recalled into the United States U-20 side to take part in the Cuadrangular Internacional in Arequipa, Peru. On August 16, Shanosky became the third player to make the jump from D.C. United’s Academy to the senior squad, following midfielder Andy Najar and goalkeeper Bill Hamid.
Shanosky recently represented his country at the 2010 Milk Cup in Northern Ireland. The United States defeated the host nation in this prestigious competition, with Shanosky starting the first two matches of the tournament against China and Norway. In the Milk Cup final, Shanosky came on as a substitute and made his impact felt in the United States’ triumph.

Golf: Heritage's Nicole Feaster Finds Golf After Stingray Attack Ended Tennis Career
(Aug. 24, 2010) - One misstep ended Heritage High School sophomore Nicole Feaster's tennis career and that unfortunate incident wasn't even on the court ... it was in the Pacific Ocean as Feaster was stung by a stingray that she stepped on while surfing in San Diego two years ago.
That painful incident led to a bone infection and thus far 20 operations or procedures and counting. No longer able to play tennis, Feaster has turned to golf and she is catching on quickly to her new sport as she shot a career-best 72 on Tuesday to capture the Cheers Sports Open at Algonkian.
Feaster had never played Algonkian before Tuesday but that didn't prevent her from chipping in for birdie on her first hole and the rest of the way she kept it on the fairway and on the greens to card the even par 72. Before this week, 79 was her best score of the season.
"Shocked!," is how Feaster described her round. "I just hit every fairway and green."
Feaster had been a tennis player since she was three years old but the stingray accident led to multiple infections, which are not completely taken care of.
"I had an infection a couple of weeks ago," said Feaster. "I am ready for it to stop."
Feaster plays out of Rivercreek Country Club and golf is quickly replacing tennis as her sport of choice.
"I love it!," said Feaster.
Loudoun County, led by Brantley Kushner's 73, captured the team title.

Golf: Loudoun County All but Wraps Up Dulles District Regular Season Title with Win at Cheers Open
2010 Cheers Open Champion: Loudoun County
(Aug. 24, 2010) - Loudoun County High School all but wrapped up its second straight AA Dulles District regular-season title on Tuesday with a win at the Cheers Open at Algonkian. The Raiders, who will be seeking a third straight district postseason tournament championship in September, shot a 302, which good enough to beat runner-up Dominion by 15 strokes.
Loudoun County has now captured both of the district's mini tournaments this month which account for two-thirds of the Dulles District regular season. Dual meet records count for the final third of the equation. Dominion, runner-up in both tournaments, is the only team with an outside shot of catching County but the Titans are 1-2 on the dual meet season and would need to finish first in the dual meet season and have County, currently 3-0, fall to third in the final standings for the two teams to tie.
There were four teams within seven strokes of each other as Cedar Run District's Heritage took third at 319 followed closely by Freedom at 321, Briar Woods at 323 and Park View at 324. Potomac Falls scored 329 followed by Liberty District's Stone Bridge at 333 and then Tuscarora (344), Broad Run (353) and Woodgrove (372).
Heritage's Nicole Feaster shot a career-best 72 to win low individual medalist honors followed by Loudoun County's Brantley Kushner, one stroke back.

(Aug. 24, 2010) - It was a full slate of prep golf on Monday in Loudoun as Dulles District frontrunner Loudoun County improved to 3-0 on the dual season with a 297-330 win over Freedom at South Riding and Broad Run went to 2-0 with a 336-341 win over Tuscarora at Lansdowne. Briar Woods also posted a 346-353 win over Woodgrove at Stoneleigh and Park View earned one of its first dual meet wins in years with a 313-321 win over Dominion at 1757. Stone Bridge opened the Liberty District season with a 162-174 win over TJ at Pinecrest.

Football: Dominion Celebrates Deandre Reaves' Decision to Play at West Virginia
(Aug. 23, 2010) - On the eve of his senior season, Dominion High School senior running back Deandre Reaves celebrated his decision a week ago to play NCAA Division I college football at West Virginia University next year.
Reaves enters the 2010 season with 3,199 career rushing yards and 36 touchdowns. The AA Titans, looking for the school's first ever playoff bid this year, open the season Friday at home against AAA Loudoun Valley.

(Aug. 22, 2010) - Greater Loudoun was on its way to a 2-0 start in the Babe Ruth 14-Year-Old World Series Sunday but the Lions couldn't hold their 3-0 lead, falling to Waite Park, Minn., 11-6.
For Greater Loudoun it was a case of too many walks and too many errors as Waite Park tied it with three in the fifth and then scored seven in the sixth inning.
Greater Loudoun looks to rebound Monday at 8 p.m. against Arlington, Mass. at Fireman's Field.

Williamport's Kyle Datres went seven innings, while striking out five. He helped his cause at the plate, going 3 for 4 with two runs and two RBI's.

Golf: Loudoun Valley Finishes Runner-up at 12-Team Bryan Gunter Memorial Tournament
(Aug. 22, 2010) - The Loudoun Valley High School golf team, led by senior Tanner Welsh's even par performance, finished second at the Bryan Gunter Memorial Tournament. The Vikings shot 616 in the 2-day event, trailing winner Centreville by just two storkes in the 12-team tournament.
The Vikings (310) trailed eventual winner Centreville (304) by six strokes after the first round which was played at Winchester Golf and Country Club. The second day was competed at Rock Harbor Golf Club and the Vikings rallied, posting the low team score of 306 but fell short by two strokes to Centreville who posted a 310.
Valley had two of the top three individual scores for the two-day event. Welsh finished second in the field of 72 players posting a score of even par (144) and senior Scott Davidson had a two day total of 146 having posted a first round score of 2 under par 70.
Centreville’s Noori Hyun was low medalist with a 2 day score of 10 under par 134. The Vikings got solid performances from freshman Ian Hildebrand who had a 75 on day two following an 87 on day one. Mac Kaseman’s 164 rounded out the scoring for the Vikings.

Heritage claimed a AAA Cedar Run District dual meet win with Osbourn last week at Piedmont, 327-395, with Ryan Douglass shooting 72 and Ryan O'Sullivan a 79. Rounding out the scoring for the Pride were Nicole Feaster (85) and Katie Labgold (91).

Bryant starter Ashton Green, the Arkansas nine lead-off hitter, is up first. Green allowed four runs on seven hits in his complete game performance. Can he start a rally? He pops out to second. GL is now two outs away from a win here on the Opening Day of the Babe Ruth baseball 14-Year-Old World Series in Purcellville. Harrison Dale is up next for Bryant, he is 0-for-3 on the night, and he goes down swinging for the second out. Purcellville (Aug. 21, 2010) - Play Ball! The Babe Ruth 14-Year-Old World Series opens today at Fireman's Field with a full slate of games including Virginia state champions Winchester playing at 5 p.m. against Lexington, Ky. and host Greater Loudoun taking on Bryant, Ark. at 8 p.m.

Boys Soccer: In One Year, Potomac Falls Grad Shanosky Went from VHSL Title Game to Pro Contract

Sterling (Aug. 20, 2010) - Just 18 years old, Conor Shanosky has had a year of incredibly tough decisions and all of them have paid off as the recent Potomac Falls High School grad soccer career has taken a meteoric rise from the VHSL state title game all the way to a professional contract with D.C. United earlier this week.
Sitting outside of Potomac Falls High School -- Shanosky lives at home -- the almost 6-foot-4 defensive midfielder talked about his sudden fame and all those Facebook new friend requests and good luck texts and the cell phone messages.
"I looked down at one my phone at one time and it said I had 14 new messages and I had just checked my messages 30 minutes earlier," said Shanosky with a bit of awe in his voice.

Volleyball: Teams Tune Up for Season at Park View Jamboree
(Aug. 20, 2010) - Briar Woods and Park View tuned up for the 2010 volleyball season against four other schools last Saturday at the Park View Jamboree.
Briar Woods, led by Chelsea Kaser, came away with top honors in the combined varsity/junior varsity scoring with 301 points.

Football: Dominion Running Back Deandre Reaves Commits to West Virginia
(Aug. 20, 2010) - Dominion High School running back Deandre Reaves, entering his fourth year as a standout starter for the Titans, has committed to play football next year at West Virginia University. (Aug. 20, 2010) - Freedom and Loudoun County each improved to 2-0 on the Dulles District dual meet golf season with wins on Thursday with the Eagles beating Potomac Falls, 319-333, and the two-time defending district champion Raiders firing past Park View, 291-319. Broad Run won its opener with 4-stroke win over Woodgrove, 367-371, and Dominion also carded a 4-stroke win over Briar Woods, 332-336.
Christian Fortier shot a 72 on the South Riding course for Potomac Falls but the Panthers slipped to 1-1 on the season as Freedom (2-0) had three players break 80 - Chelsea Kim, Phillip McQuitty and Jason Scrivo.
Brantley Kushner shot 70 at Westpark to edge Loudoun County (2-0) teammate Michael Linville by a stroke. Sam Ryan shot 74 and Jake Wilton shot 75 to lead an up-and-coming Park View squad which fell to 0-2.
Broad Run (1-0) was led by Sloan Meadows with an 84 and Mitch Pittman with an 86 in the dual meet win over Woodgrove (1-1) at Stoneleigh.
Dominion (1-1) evened its record with three players all scoring 82 at Brambleton -- Shelby Shote, Richard Boudreau and Erik Dulik. Adam Ochs shot a 72 for Briar Woods (0-2) and Nick Vazanna scored 83.

News: Ted Leonsis Supports Education in Loudoun, Talks About "Business of Happiness"

(Aug. 19, 2010) - Washington Capitals and Wizards owner Ted Leonis discussed his new book "The Business of Happiness" at a reception hosted by the Loudoun Education Foundation on Aug. 9 at the 1757 Golf Club, just a 3-wood away from the AOL campus where Leonsis helped turn the Internet start-up into one of the world's biggest brands.
Leonsis added his support to the LEF by offering a $10,000 scholarship if a member of the audience would match it. This challenge was quickly met by Leonsis' fellow Georgetown alumnus John Wood, CEO and chairman of the board of TELOS Corp.

(Aug. 19, 2010) - Battlefield High School, after falling to Loudoun Valley in last week's Cedar Run District mini tournament, turned the tables on Monday by beating the Vikes with a school record-tying 294 team score.
Loudoun Valley finished with a 304 in the 18-hole, 72 par match played at Loudoun Golf and Country Club
Low medalist for the match was Battlefield’s Karishma Thiagaraj, who blistered the course in 4-under par 68. A junior, she is a new student/athlete at Battlefield and recently won the Maryland Amateur Championship. Also for Battlefield PJ Leonard had a 74, while Doc Schulte and Connor Perez each posted a 76.

Leesburg (Aug. 19, 2010) - Loudoun's two newest high schools haven't even opened their doors yet but their state-of-the-art synthetic turf fields are already paying dividends as Broad Run High School has moved tonight's football scrimmage with Martinsburg, WV to Tuscarora High School due to wet fields in Ashburn. Game time for the two-time defending Division 4 state champion Spartans is 6 p.m.

Boys Lacrosse: Broad Run's Ryan Madigan Commits to NCAA Division I Robert Morris
"We could not be more proud of Ryan for earning a scholarship from RMU," said Madigan's father, Mark Madigan. "It will also be a lot of fun in the Madigan home because Ryan and Eric will get to play in the same conference for two years."
Ryan's older brother, Eric, enters his sophomore year at Sacred Heart this fall.

(Aug. 17, 2010) - The Loudoun County High School golf team ran away with Tuesday's Dulles District mini tournament at Raspberry Falls, sweeping four of the top five individual spots on the way to a 285 team score and a dominating 26-stroke victory.
With Brantley Kushner firing a tournament-best 3-under 69 and teammates Andrew Brenneman (71), Michael Linville (72) and Matt Tomassone (73) not far behind, it was clear that the Raiders are well on their way to a third straight district title. The host Raiders were so good that they didn't even utilize a 74 from Kevin Cook in the team score.
Wednesday's event counts one-third towards the regular-season title with next week's Cheers Classic at Algonkian and then the dual meet season comprising the other two-thirds.
Shelby Shote of Dominion shot 72 and along with Richard Boudreau's 74 helped the Titans finish second with a 311.
Soon-to-be-opened Tuscarora took third with a 326.
Potomac Falls' Christian Fortier shot a 74 to finish in a tie for sixth individually.

Football: Park View Football Scrimmage at James Wood Kicks Off at 6 p.m. Tonight
(Aug. 16, 2010) - The football scrimmage between Park View and James Wood, which was moved from Saturday so Patriot players could attend the funeral of a classmate killed last week in a dirt bike accident, is rescheduled for 6 p.m. tonight in Winchester.
