Girls Volleyball: Loudoun County JR Maggie Phillips Named Region II Player of the Year; Raiders Brown Takes Coaching Honors

(Nov. 13, 2012) - Loudoun County High School junior Maggie Phillips has been named the Region II girls volleyball Player of the Year in a vote of coaches, becoming the fourth straight Raider to take the honor and fifth in six years.

Loudoun County coach Jenica Brown, who led the Raiders to their seventh straight Region II title on Saturday and a 25-1 record going into tonight's VHSL AA state quarterfinal against New Kent (7 p.m. in Leesburg), has been named the Coach of the Year for the third straight time and fourth time since 2006. Brown's brother, Jarod, a Raider assistant coach during the long run, also took the honors in 2009 when he was acting head coach.

Girls Volleyball: Loudoun County Sweeps All-Region Honors with Jenna Strange Player of the Year, Jenica Matthias Coach of the Year

(Nov. 14, 2011) - Loudoun County High School girls volleyball, which swept to a sixth consecutive Region II title Saturday night, claimed the top regional honors with senior Jenna Strange named the Player of the Year and Jenica Matthias named the Coach of the Year.

Strange joined senior teammates Katrina Kirby and Libero Gabby Serafin on the first team along with Heritage senior setter Stephanie Yokoyama. Second team honors went to Heritage sophomore Sydney Busa and Potomac Falls junior Kayla Carlton.

Football: Jessop Throws Three TDs as Griffis Opens Broad Run Coaching Debut With Shutout

(Aug. 31, 2010) - Connor Jessop threw for three touchdowns and 173 yards on 9 of 11 passing and picked up another 57 yards rushing to make Matt Griffis a winner in his Broad Run High School coaching debut as the Spartans shut out Fauquier, 21-0, Friday in Ashburn.

While Griffis was making his debut the win was nothing new for the Spartans as it continued their 29-yard winning streak overall, which includes back-to-back Division 4 state titles, and was the school's 31st straight regular-season victory.

Jessop, who led Broad Run to the state title last year as a sophomore threw TD passes to Steven Field (56 yards), Matt Preziotti (23 yards) and Caleb Lindsey (44 yards).

Griffis took over the Broad Run program after Mike Burnett left to start the Tuscarora High School program. Griffis had been a long-time offensive coordinator under Mickey Thompson at Park View and then Stone Bridge.

Boys Basketball: Taylor Johnson Scores 22 to Lead Spartans to Playoff Win at Fauquier

(Feb. 23, 2010) - Broad Run High School junior Taylor Johnson scored a team-high 22 points Tuesday to lead the Spartans to a 74-60 Region II Division 4 quarterfinal playoff win on the road at Fauquier.

The Spartans (20-3) will travel to rival Potomac Falls on Thursday for a 7 p.m. regional semifinal showdown. PF leads the series, 2-1, this season after a win in Saturday's district tournament finals.

BR went up big Tuesday, 21-10 in the first and 44-27 at the half, but the Falcons fought back and narrowed the BR lead to six heading into the final quarter but the Spartans were able to pull away.

Senior Nick Salgado scored 13 points in the win and senior Kevin McGaughey finished with 12.

The Falcons went into Fauquier County on Wednesday to take on Kettle Run High School for a make-up game of Tuesday's "Snowed-Out" game and super sophomore guard Myles Tate led the Falcons to the win with 20 points and 12 assists.

Kettle Run played a tough first quarter as Spencer Carter kept them within reach of the Falcons. Carter finished with a team high 16 points for the Cougars.

Yves Kaume's 3-pointer at the end of the half put Briar Woods up double digits for good as the Falcons cruised to a 23-point victory. Five Falcons finished the night in double digits.

Briar Woods (2-0) will now travel to Loudoun County High School on Friday night to take on the Raiders in their first district game of the year.
