News: 67 Loudoun County Public Schools Students Attending Governor's School

(July 9, 2013) - Sixty-seven Loudoun County Public Schools students are attending the 2013 Governor's School program, an intensive four-week educational experience for gifted students that takes place during July on college and university campuses throughout Virginia.

The Governor's School provides rising juniors and seniors with a program of intensive instruction in visual and performing arts, engineering, humanities, mathematics, science and technology, agriculture, and life sciences and medicine.
The 67 students were selected for the Summer Residential Governor's School program in the fall of 2012.

Students are encouraged to apply for the intensive program by mid-October. A student may apply for both academic and performing arts placement, but must accept only one program if both are offered. Only rising high school juniors and seniors are eligible to apply for the highly sought after spots.

The visual and performing arts selection process requires participation in Virginia Department of Education-sponsored adjudications. Student applications are reviewed by the student's high school, which then submits a set number of applications to the school division. The school division must then review and score the applications. The division is limited in the number of applications it may submit to the state. The Virginia Department of Education makes the final decision on selection of students admitted to the Summer Residential Governor's School.

There are two mentorship programs (at the NASA/Langley Research Center and Marine Science) associated with the Governor's School. These programs offer individualized student assignment to one or more researchers/graduate students, or engineers at the two sites. Selection is based on the match between mentors available during a specific summer and the skills, interests and experiences of the individual student.

LCPS students who will attend the Summer Residential Governor's School (with home high school and Governor's School program attended) are:
