Baseball and Softball: Five Loudoun Teams Advance in Regional Play

(May 31, 2011) - From AA to AAA Loudoun baseball and softball teams had a great Memorial Day as five teams advanced in regional tournament play. Stone Bridge baseball in the Northern Region and Loudoun Valley softball in the Northwest Region both advanced to the semifinals.

Freedom baseball and Broad Run and Woodgrove softball advanced to the quarterfinals. One of the two teams to fall was Loudoun County softball which lost 9-0 at Woodgrove. The other team ending its season was Briar Woods baseball which lost a 5-1 lead late at Brentsville and fell 6-5.




In baseball, Stone Bridge edged Robinson, 3-2, and Freedom blanked Monticello on the road, 3-0.

In softball Broad Run handled Warren County, 5-1, away, and Loudoun Valley escaped at Osbourn Park with an exciting, 5-3, win in 11 innings.

Sophomore lefty Zach Newell tossed a complete game 5-hit shutout and outfielder Matt Malacane (3-4, 1RBI, 1R) and catcher Dylan Teal (2-3, 2RBI, BB) combined for 5-hits to lead the Freedom Eagles past the Monticello Mustangs in AA Region II play on Monday.

With 2-outs in the top of the 5th of a 0-0 pitchers' duel, Freedom got the 1st break of the game when center-fielder Joey Plesce reached on an error. After Plesce stole 2nd, Malacane's clutch single to left brought him home to break the tie. Heads up base-running on the play by Malacane enabled him to advance to 3rd on the wild throw home. Teal followed with a perfect drag-bunt single to bring home Malacane and give the Eagles a 2-0 advantage.

Freedom added an insurance run in top of the 7th. First, shortstop Kyle Wrighte reached on an infield miscue. Then, with 2-outs, Malacane and Teal came through again. Malacane's line-drive single to left-center sent pinch-runner Nick Plesce to 3rd. Next, Teal lined a 1st-pitch fastball past the shortstop and into left-center, bringing home Plesce and giving the Eagles some breathing room 3-0.

The Mustangs never threatened from that point on, as Newell retired the last 5-hitters in order, recording 2 of his 5 total strikeouts in the final frame on his way to the shutout win. He was aided all day by exceptional team defense that included gems by third-baseman Dylan
Chapman, shortstop Wrighte, second-baseman Zack Shuster, and outfielders Joey Plesce and Malacane.

Next up for Freedom: at Kettle Run on Tuesday, 3/31.

(May 31, 2011) - When Dulles District athletic directors convinced Region II to expand its playoffs to account for the fact that Loudoun's 9-team district is almost twice as big as some of the other 5-team districts in the region, Monday night's success is surely what they had in mind as Dulles soccer teams went a perfect 6-0 in Region II first round action and with Heritage High School advancing in the AAA Northwest Region tournament it was a 7-0 night for the soccer-rich area.

And five of the seven wins came on the road as Briar Woods, Freedom and the Heritage girls as well as the Potomac Falls and Tuscarora boys won on the road. The Broad Run boys and Woodgrove girls each advanced at home.

The boys showed that defense is the key to winning playoff games as the trio of Dulles teams in action -- Broad Run, Potomac Falls and Tuscarora -- combined to not allow a goal on the night with Broad Run beating Charlottesville, 2-0, and Potomac Falls edging Millbrook, 1-0, and Tuscarora nipping Fluvanna, 1-0.

The Briar Woods girls may have taken the defensive approach with a dramatic 1-0 win in overtime but the other three teams advancing scored big with Heritage putting up four goals in Roanoke against Patrick Henry in a 4-1 win and Woodgrove scored five goals in the first half against Western Albemarle and kept the score  at 5-1 for the win. Freedom had the biggest outburst putting up enough goals to end the contest early in an 8-0 win at Millbrook.

Playing in blazing conditions at all locations, it took teams little time to "warm up" as the Woodgrove girls showed with goals in the 12th and 14th minutes. Sarah Hardison and Charlotte Ratcliff scored the first two goals.

In 22nd minute, Woodgove increased its lead as Bergen Elkjer scored off an assist from Lexi Clarke. Despite a goal from Western Albemarle, the Wolverines left little hope with two late first-half goals, both by Clarke, in the 35th minute and 39th minute. Victoria Perry, off the bench, picked up the assist on both of Clarke's scores.

Woodgrove, with a game to play tonight at Brentsville, subbed liberally in the second half and was content to play possession the sweltering conditions.

Six of the eight Dulles District teams in the tournament are back on the road with two having to not travel far as the Briar Woods girls faces Dulles District champion Broad Run and the Tuscarora boys take on Dulles regular-season winner Park View. Freedom girls are at Charlottesville. The Broad Run boys are at Western Albemarle and the Potomac Falls boys are playing Brentsville at Liberty High School.

News: Opening Ceremony for Bolen Park Set for June 4

The Loudoun County Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Services will hold a grand opening ceremony for the Philip A. Bolen Memorial Park on Saturday, June 4, 2011, at 10:00 a.m.

The public is invited to attend the grand opening ceremony and community celebration featuring first “pitches and throws” by members of the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors, marching bands, music, performances, concessions, giant moon bounces, games, and bus tours of the property. Rugby: Local High School Teams to Play for Virginia State Championships June 4

(May 31, 2011) - Loudoun high school rugby players have two opportunities to bring home state titles on Saturday as the undefeated Western Suburbs U19 boys -- with players from Briar Woods, Loudoun County, Loudoun Valley, Stone Bridge and Woodgrove high schools -- and the Western Loudoun girls, a team based in Purcellville, play Saturday at T.C. Williams High School.

Western Loudoun faces Fairfax Police Youth Club (FPYC) at 1 p.m. in the Girls Championship and the Western Suburbs U-19 squad faces Heritage High School of Newport News at 2:20 p.m. in the Division II Championship. The Division I Championship at 3:45 p.m. pits Springfield Youth Club/West End vs. NOVA U-19.

The Girls Championship is a rematch of the 2010 championship won by Fairfax.

The Boys Division II Championship pits Heritage High School (Newport News), a first year club that will represent the Peninsula Conference. Their opponent is Western Suburbs u-19 from Lovettsville. In the regional semifinals, Heritage defeated Fort Hunt, and Western Suburbs defeated Denbigh High School, 13-5.

The Boys Division I Championship sees 2010 champion Springfield Youth Club / West End (SYC/WE) versus NOVA u-19. These 2 Northern Conference clubs defeated challenges from Menchville and Kecoughtan high schools to reach the State Finals.

Western Suburbs U-19 is coached by Steve Lough, who built a regulation rugby pitch in his yard and that is where the adult teams and the U-19 club practice and play their matches. Read more about the club and the unique set-up in this article from Leesburg Today.

For Saturday's title games in Alexandria, admission is free to children and students (18 and under) and $5.00 for adults.

Football: Broad Run Junior WR Price Picks Up Offer from Bryant

Ashburn (May 31, 2011) - Broad Run High School junior wide receiver Michael Price has picked up a scholarship offer from NCAA Division I Bryant University according to Spartans coach Matt Griffis.

Bryant has offered Price a partial three-quarters scholarship which could go to a full scholarship. Price is slated to attend a Bryant day camp in two weeks.

Youth Sports: Gymnastics - Robinson Sisters Represent Well at Nationals

(May 31, 2011) - Arianna and Mikayla Robinson recently finished off their 2010-2011 gymnastics competitive season by qualifying to the Level 9 Eastern National Gymnastics Championships held in Worcester, MA on May 6-8.

Arianna Robinson is a freshman at Freedom High School and trains at Apollo Gymnastics in Woodbridge. At the Eastern National Championships she came in second on vault. The 15-year-old also placed first on vault, second on beam and third all around at the Region 7 Championship meet and was first on vault, second on beam and third all around at the Virginia State Championship meet held at Tuscarora High School.

Younger sister, Mikayla attends school in Gaithersburg, MD and trains at Hills Gymnastics. She placed third on vault and fourth on floor at level 9 Eastern Nationals. At the Region 7 Championship meet the 12-year-old was sixth on vault, first on floor exercise and fourth all around. Mikayla is the all around level 9 Maryland State Champion in the Junior A division. At the state meet she finished first on vault, third on bars, sixth on beam and second on floor exercise.

Boys Tennis: Loudoun Players Find Success in Region II Quarterfinals

(May 31, 2011) - Loudoun boys tennis players had a good start to the Region II tournament as Freedom High School's Wesley Wong and Broad Run High School's Kevin Chang both won in their quarterfinal singles matches and Wong teamed with Alex Cragg to advance in the semifinals in doubles as well.

In action at Chestnut Forks in Warrenton, Wong dispatched Josh Rinker of Liberty, 6-1, 6-2 while Chang handled Sean Lee of Brentsville, also 6-1, 6-2. Wong and Cragg advanced over a duo from Handley, 6-3, 6-3.A

Football: VHSL Releases 2011-12 Divisions - Half of Loudoun's 12 Schools Shift Division

(May 31, 2011) - The Virginia High School League has released its football divisions for the next two seasons (2011 and 2012) and half of Loudoun's 12 high schools have moved either up or down a division.

Freedom and Broad Run move up to AAA Division 5 from AA Division 4 while Heritage and Loudoun Valley shift down from AAA Division 5 to AA Division 4. Both Loudoun Valley and Heritage are appealing their D4 assignment as the student enrollment numbers that were taken as part of the March 31, 2011 ADM, included the two schools large senior class that at the lower three grades is now divided between new schools Tuscarora and Woodgrove.

The appeal, Valley and Heritage argue that their true numbers should place them in Division 3, will be heard in September.

Both Dominion and Park View move up from Division 3 to Division 4, not based as much on increasing student population as the fact that Region II has fewer larger schools in it due to schools being shifted to AAA.

Remaining the same: Stone Bridge (D5), Briar Woods (D4), Potomac Falls (D4), Loudoun County (D4), Woodgrove (D3) and Woodgrove (D3).

Briar Woods has caught the biggest break in the shuffle as the Falcons, with a rapidly increasing student base of 1,594, is just 67 students less than neighbor Broad Run but Briar Woods was placed in AA in the last realignment by the VHSL. Briar Woods is the largest school in Region II by nearly 100 students, with Potomac Falls next, and is almost 270 students larger than the biggest Region I school (Chancellor with 1326 students), almost 130 larger than the largest Region II school (Amherst with 1468 students) and almost 150 students larger than the largest Region IV school (Puolaski County with 1450 students).

Youth Sports: First Ever Loudoun/Fauquier Youth Flag Football Super Bowl Set

(May 31, 2011) - The first ever Loudoun/Fauquier Youth Flag Football Super Bowl will be held on Saturday, June 18 at George Washington University in Ashburn starting at 10 a.m.

The games will pit the Loudoun County youth flag football champion from the Ashburn Youth Pro Flag Football League vs. the Champion from The Fauquier County Youth Pro Flag football League. There will be a total of two games in two different age divisions, 9 to 11 and 12 to 13.

Softball: Briar Woods Senior Kristina Karagiorgis to Play at Virginia Wesleyan

(May 31, 2011) - Briar Woods High School senior Kristina Karagiorgis, who has helped the Briar Woods High School softball team to three consecutive Dulles District tournament titles, is setto play next year at NCAA Division III Virginia Wesleyan College.

(May 30, 2011) - The Broad Run High School scored with less than two minutes left Thursday to defeat Potomac Falls, 3-2, and secure the first ever outright boys soccer Dulles District tournament title for the program.

(May 30, 2011) - Junior Macy Jones fired a two-hitter and freshman Kacie Kondrotis snapped a scoreless deadlock with a two-out, two-run single in the fourth inning as Briar Woods High School defeated Woodgrove 4-1 to win its third straight Dulles District Tournament softball title Thursday night at Tuscarora High School in Leesburg.

Jones retired the first 10 Wolverines before allowing a one-out walk in the fourth. She then got the next two outs on fly outs.

In the bottom of the fourth, Jones drilled a one-out single and senior Kristina Karagiorgis followed with a single. One out later, sophomore Lynn Brantley reached on an infield error to load the bases, and Kondrotis followed with a two-run single.

The Falcons, who improved to 20-3 with their school-record 13th straight win, added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Senior Jillian Olson reached on a fielder's choice, Jones walked and Karagiorgis laced a two-run double to give the Falcons a 4-0 lead.
Woodgrove scored an unearned run with two outs in the top of the seventh to break up the shutout.

Jones didn't allow a hit until two outs in the fifth but got the next batter on a foul out. Jones finished with eight strikeouts and one walk.

The Falcons will host a Region II quarterfinal game on Tuesday. The opponent and game time will be announced at a later date. Woodgrove hosts Loudoun County on Memorial Day at 6 p.m. in a regional first round contest.

Girls Soccer: Broad Run Wins 4th Consecutive Dulles District Tournament Title

(May 30, 2011) - The Broad Run High School girls soccer team had their hands full Thursday night with the No. 6 seed Woodgrove Wolverines but the Spartans improved to 18-1 on the season and added the Dulles District tournament title to their regular-season crown with a 3-2 win. Broad Run, the 3-time defending AA state champion, has now won four consecutive district tournament titles and five straight regular-season district championships.

Baseball: Freedom Advances to Region II Tournament on High Note After Wild, 10-9, Win Over Briar Woodes

(May 30, 2011) - The Freedom High School baseball team secured its 14th win of the season Tursday, knocking off Briar Woods in the Dulles District Tournament Consolation game 10-9. It was a battle that featured 23 total hits, 19 total runs, and six different lead changes.

Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the 1st, Freedom got busy right away. A walk to outfielder Matt Malacane (2-4, 2B, 1RBI, 2R) and consecutive singles by DH Kevin Dean (3-4, 2RBI, 2R) and outfielder Matt Murphy (2-4, 3B, 1RBI, 1R) loaded the bases. Next, first-baseman Zach Newell
(1-2, HR, 2RBI, 1R) grounded out to plate Malacane. Second-baseman Zack Shuster (2-3, 2B, 2RBI, 1R) then brought home both Dean and Murphy with a double to left to give the Eagles the lead 3-2.

The Eagles extended that lead over the next 2-innings while senior starter Brad Baker held Briar Woods in-check on the mound. In the 2nd, Freedom used singles by freshman shortstop Kyle Wrighte and Malacane, along with a fielder's choice by catcher Dylan Teal, to set the table for Dean's 2RBI single to right, making it 5-2. Then, with the bases empty in the 3rd, Newell blasted a 2-0 pitch deep over the right field wall for his 1st homer of the year, putting Freedom up 6-2.

But no lead was safe in this contest. So, after Briar Woods scored 1 in the 4th and 4 more in the 5th, the Eagles found themselves having to come from behind again in their half of the 5th - and they did just that. First, Newell and Shuster both walked. Then, an error on third-
baseman Dylan Chapman's grounder allowed pinch-runner Mark Muhlenberg to score. Another miscue by the Falcons, this one on a run-down play resulting from Wrighte's ground-out, enabled Shuster to reach home safely and give the Eagles an 8-7 lead.

Briar Woods tied it 8-8 in the top of the 6th, but Freedom answered again in the bottom half. A 2-out single and stolen-base by Dean, followed by a huge RBI triple to deep right by Murphy put the Eagles up 9-8.

Finally, with the scored tied yet again and with 2-outs in the Freedom half of the 7th, the Eagles mounted one final rally. First, center-fielder Joey Plesce (1-4, 2B, 1R), lined an 0-2 pitch just inside the line in short right for a double. Then, Malacane, Freedom's 1st-Team
All-District outfielder, belted a fastball deep off the wall in left-center to bring home Plesce and make the Eagles winners 10-9.

Andrew Lamont earned his 5th win of the season for Freedom after replacing reliever Lane Wheeler in the 7th, getting the final 3 outs on only 5 total pitches.

Baseball: Stone Bridge Blastgs Woodson, 11-3, to Advance to Northern Region Quarterfinals

(May 30, 20110 - In a game that had several intriguing storylines, the Stone Bridge Bulldogs defeated W.T. Woodson 11-3 Friday afternoon in a first round game of the Northern Region playoffs. The Bulldogs pounded out 13 hits including four home runs and received heroic pitching performances from seniors Stephen Putnick and Mac West.

With the game only a few minutes old, Woodson cleanup hitter David Rozner lined a shot right back at Putnick. The ball hit Putnick's glove and rolled a short distance away allowing Rozner to leg out an infield hit scoring Brant Thomas for the first run of the game.

A lengthy delay ensued as Coach Sam Plank assessed Putnick's injury. It was later discovered that Putnick had a broken finger and shattered fingernail, which was quite evident as the game resumed with him still on the mound.

Unable to catch even a soft throw with his glove, Putnick received the return throws from catcher J.J. White with his throwing hand. Putnick went on to finish the inning and pitch a perfect second inning. He pitched into the third until, with two outs, a 30 minute lightning delay ensued.

When play resumed, Plank called on West to relieve Putnick. West turned in his best outing of the season going 4 1/3 innings allowing just four hits and striking out 8 Woodson hitters. Neither Putnick nor West walked a batter.

The Bulldog hitters entered the game knowing they had their work cutout for them as they would be facing Patriot District Pitcher of the Year, Bryson Hough. The Bulldogs sent a message early that they were not intimidated and would be up for the challenge.

Four first inning singles by Josh Kuzbel (3-4, 3R, SB), J. J. White (2-4, HR, 2 RBI, 2 Runs), Tyler Lighton (2-4, 2B, 2 Runs, 2 RBI), and Sid Harvey (2-3, HR, 3 RBI) plated three runs to give the Bulldogs an early 3-1 lead.

The score stayed that way until the bottom of the third when senior Ryan Johnston (1-3, HR, 2 RBI)scored Kuzbel with a 2-run homer to left field, his fourth of the season.

Woodson answered with two unearned runs in the top of the fourth, but Stone Bridge answered with four of their own in the bottom of the fifth, knocking Hough from the game.

Leading off the inning, Spencer Rositano lifted a long opposite field home run, his first of the season. A double by Lighton scored Kuzbel, who previously doubled, and Lighton would score on Harvey's second home run of the season.

Not to be outdone, White would cap the scoring in the home half of the sixth with his own two-run shot. It was White's fifth homer of the season.

This game was also marked by a couple of sterling defensive plays that helped keep the Woodson offense at bay. When Woodson's Joe Coogan launched a drive to left-center leading off the sixth inning, it appeared to have extra bases written all over it. But that was before centerfielder Alex Wynn arrived out of nowhere to make a diving highlight reel catch.

Later in the inning, first baseman Connor Donovan would end the inning with a great stop of Ryan Fitzgerald's sharp one-hopper.

With the win, Stone Bridge advances and will play Robinson high school on Monday, May 30th at Woodson at 1 PM.

Softball: Stone Bridge Rallies in the 7th Only to End Season in Extra Innings Loss

(May 30, 3011) - The Stone Bridge High School softball team lost, 4-3 in 9 innings, to the West Potomac Wolverines in a Northern Region first round contest that started on Friday, and due to lightning and rain, was resumed on Saturday.

The Bulldogs had 17 hits in the game, but were unable to get enough runners across the plate to secure the victory. 2B Niki Prince, CF Sydney Broderick, C Beth Lewis, DP Katie Bellino, and LF Erin Dzurilla had multiple hits in the game. SS Cori Prince and Pinch Hitter Presley Gibson each had a hit, and RF Courtney Gibson reached base on a walk.

P Kelly McDaniel took the tough loss for Stone Bridge.

The Wolverines had 12 hits in the game, including five in the 6th inning that gave them a temporary lead of 3-2.

In the bottom of the 7th, however, the Bulldogs tied the score at 3 apiece when Broderick hit a leadoff single. Lewis sacrificed Broderick to 2nd base, and a batter later, Bellino hit a 2-out RBI for the score.

Stone Bridge shut West Potomac down in the top of the 8th, but unfortunately, left two of their own runners stranded on base in their half of the inning.

The Wolverines regrouped and took a 4-3 lead in the top of the 9th inning on a Stone Bridge infield throwing error, and then a pair of hits.

Stone Bridge never quit. In the bottom of the 9th inning, with one out, Lewis roped the ball just short of the 225 foot left field fence. Unfortunately, she was stranded on base, and the game came to a close.

Lacrosse: Loudoun Valley Girls Advances to State Tournament with Big Road Win; Woodgrove Girls, BWoods Boys Fall Just Short in Regional Title Games

(May 30, 2011) - The Loudoun Valley High School traveled to Charlottesville to play the Albemarle Patriots Friday night in a Northwest Region tournament consolation game with the winner advancing to the VHSL state tournament as the third team out of the region and the loser’s season would be done.

Despite playing their fourth consecutive road game in an eight day period and enduring a one hour delay due to lightning in the area, the Vikings (16-3) came out ready to play, scoring the game's nine first goals in just under 11 minutes and going on to a big 22-4 win.

Eight different Vikings tallied a goal during the opening stretch led by senior Andrea Mustacchio with two goals.

The two teams would score two goals each for the remainder of the first half with senior Brooke Cope tallying both the goals for Valley giving the Vikings an 11-2 halftime lead.

Even though the draws were about even, Valley controlled the ground balls won due to the strong first half effort of the defensive unit. The defense, led by Rachel Swan, Megan Daeschner, Allie Herold and Vic Molchan, forced a number of turnovers and limited the Albemarle offense to just nine shots on goal. Valley’s senior goalkeeper, Kelsey Luck, came up with six saves in the first half.

With the defense playing well, the offensive unit for Valley controlled the temple and pace of the game as it scored its 11 goals on 16 shots.

The second half saw the Vikings dominate the draws and ground balls won.

The Vikings offense picked up where it left off in the first. Valley scored four goals from four different players in just over four minutes time to extend their lead to 15-2.

After Albemarle scored to cut the deficit to 15-3, senior Caitlin Khosla scored two consecutive goals in two minutes to build Valley’s lead to 17-3 with 13:05 left in the game.

After another score from the Patriots with 10:36 left in the game, the Vikings finished the game on a 5-0 run to make the final score, 22-4, in favor of Valley.

Senior Michelle Devenoge led the final scoring run with two goals. As in the first half, the Vikings defensive unit played a strong half, limiting the Patriots to just six shots on goal.

In addition to the starters, senior Christina Blue and juniors Payton Boyer and Caitlin Gore saw significant playing time on defense. Valley’s junior goalkeeper, Maggie Beglau, started the second half and because of the strong play from the defense, saw little action come her way.

Because of the domination of play by Valley, the Vikings were able to give some of their reserves on offense an opportunity to play, as well. Freshman Courtney Schollian took advantage of her playing time by scoring a goal for the Vikings.

Valley was led in scoring by C. Khosla with four goals and A. Mustacchio with three goals. As a team, Loudoun Valley scored 22 goals on 31 shots while Albemarle scored 4 goals on 15 shots.

Friday, June 3, the women’s varsity team will travel to Vienna to play the Warhawks of James Madison High School for a quarterfinal state tournament game.

Girls Region II Final: Western Albemarle 14, Woodgrove 11
Woodgrove High School led this game in the second half after a nearly two-hour weather delay but defending state champion Western Albemarle came back for the win. The 1st-year Wolverines still advance to the state tournament will they will travel to either Battlefield or Osbourn Park for the state quarterfinals on June 3 or June 4.

Boys Region II Final:
Briar Woods High School was so close to its first ever regional lacrosse title, leading E.C. Glass, 12-9, going into the final quarter but the Falcons were limited to one goal in the final frame and fell in the minutes, 14-13. Briar Woods still advances to the state tournament where they will travel to Albemarle on June 3.

Girls Soccer: Stone Bridge Season Ends in Storm of Second-Half Goals, Weather Delay

Ashburn (May 30, 2011) - After a magical run in 2010 to the AAA VHSL girls soccer state title, Stone Bridge High School had its season end Friday night in a storm of second-half goals by Chantilly and then a lightning delay that extended long enough to make the Chargers an official 3-1 winner with still 16 minutes yet to play in the AAA Northern Region quarterfinal.

The Bulldogs (13-4-1) led the Chargers (10-4-2), 1-0, at the half after a wind-aided goal by junior Erin Leonard with 90 seconds to go in the first half. Chantilly, playing with the stiff wind at its back in the second half, controlled the pace of play and struck three times, including twice in a 3-minute span, as the skies were turning ominous.

Sure enough, just five minutes after Chantilly had gone up 3-1 in the 59th minute, the players and fans were chased off the fields by lightning. Almost two hours later, while play was resuming at other sites across the region the remnants of the storm could still be seen north of Stone Bridge in the form of lightning flashes and at 9 p.m. the game was called, ending Stone Bridge's season.

Code Red: Area Teams Face Heat Today, Seasons on the Line in Regional Play

Basketball: Middleburg Academy Junior Alie-Cox Makes Verbal Commitment to VCU

(May 27, 2011) - The Richmond Times-Dispatch is reporting that Middleburg Academy junior Mo Alie-Cox has verbally committed to one of the hottest basketball programs in the country, VCU.

The 6-foot-6, 251-pound Alie-Cox averaged 16 points, 12 rebounds and seven blocks a game this past season.

News: Dominion to Hold College Signing Ceremony for Five Athletes on June 1

(May 27, 20110) - Dominion High School will hold a brief signing ceremony for five of the Titan athletes that are committing to play for various colleges next season. The ceremony will be held on Wednesday, June 1 in the Dominion media center at 4 p.m.

Track and Field: Broad Run and Loudoun County Boys Finish 2-3 at Region II Meet; Briar Woods Girls 5th

(May 27, 2011) - The Broad Run High School and Loudoun County High School boys track and field teams finished second and third at the Region II meet Thursday at Warren County High School. The Briar Woods girls were fifth.

Broad Run boys scores 54 points, a distant second to runaway winner Louisa County at 54. Dulles District meet winner County scored 44, just ahead of Fauquier (43), Charlottesville (40) and Potomac Falls (38).

The girls meet was closer with Fauquier scoring 70 to win over Western Albemarle (53.50), Louisa (52), Handley (52), Briar Woods (49.50) and Woodgrove (45).

On the boys side, Broad Run's Jonathan Russell captured the 200 meters with a 21.82 effort and he won the 300 meter hurdles with a 37.91.

The Broad Run boys took first in the 4x400 relay with Zac Kish, Eric Hiatt, Lance Moran and Marcus Anderson running 3:25.86. Loudoun County's 4x800 relay team won the regional title with Matt Gambogi, Josh Showalter, Logan Smith and Ben Heberling combining for a 7:57.16. It was all Loudoun in this race as Broad Run (Matt McDevitt, Gurjeet Chinayana, John Thompson and Andrew Hayden), Freedom (Thorpe Lichtenberg, Peter Stephens, Joe Sibilak and Kyle Thornburgh), and Potomac Falls (Alex Sieh, Adam Forester, Peter Scharf and Connor Wilson), and Tuscarora (Logan Carrington, Logan Feierbach, Paul Monk and Travis Mitchell) taking 2-3-4-5!

Loudoun County's Patrick Joseph won the 800 at 1:58.22 with Potomac Falls' Wilson runner-up (1:58.46) in a tight finish. Kish took fourth at 1:59.60.

It was more distance success at 1600 meters as Potomac Falls runners went 1-2 with Juan Campos winning at 4:21.47 and Wilson with another close runner-up at 4:21.99. Completing the distance dominance was Loudoun County's Thomas Curtin who won the 3200 at 9:39.50. Freedom's Lichtenberg was fourth (10:06.00) and Potomac Falls' Nick Mogensen fifth (1:06.66).

Derek Burns of Freedom was third in the 100 meters (11.09), just ahead of Broad Run's Mike Price (11.13) and Dominion's Deandre Reaves (11.20). Loudoun County's Adam Ferguson was fifth in the 400 (51.43). Tuscarora's John Johnson was second in the 110 hurdles at 15.18 with Loudoun County's Teddy Murphy third at 15.24 and he took fourth in the 300 meter hurdles at 40.16.

Freedom boys were fifth in the 4x100 with Hakeem Britton, Burns, Myles Conley and Darius McMillian turning in 43.86. The Potomac Falls boys (Kyle Tsao, Scharf, David Sargent and Brody Frost) were fourth in the 4x400 (3:33.34).

Alex Carter of Briar Woods was third in the long jump (21-07.00) and Broad Run's Eddie Barnes was fourth in the shot at 49-05.50 and discus at 127-11.

For the girls, Briar Woods' Shaquera Leach had another big meet as she won the 200 meeters at 24.76 in an area 1-2-3 sweep with Sarah Weber of Broad Run second at 25.19 and Woodgrove's Anna Harpster third at 25.49. Leach was also second in the 100 at 12.40 and second in the 400 at 58.86.

Toni Fletcher of Freedom finished fourth in the 100 at 13.02. She also also finished second in the long jump at 17-07.00, just ahead of Tuscarora's Amirah Al-Bayinnah (17-03.50), who did win the triple jump with a leap of 37-01.75. Fletcher was fourth in the triple jump at 35-01.50.

Logan Ballard of Briar Woods won the high jump at 5-02. Loudoun had four of the top five with Anna Sullivan of Loudoun County, Lori Kostka of Tuscarora, and Desiree Orr of Freedom all at 5-00.

Webster was fourth in the 400 at 1:00.65 and Woodgrove's Florence Thompson was fifth at 1:02.05.

Loudoun girls finished 3-4-5 in the 800: Woodgrove's Audrey Houghton (2:24.80), Briar Woods' Jackie Deffer (2:25.84) and Freedom's Emma Johnson (2:27.97). In the 1600, Woodgrove's Lydia Cromwell was fourth (5:26.43) and Briar Woods' Giana Leone was fifth (5:26.69). Rachel Hagen of Potomac Falls was third in the 3200 at 11:59.93 followed by Loudoun County's Kathryn Eder (12:05.44).

Jessica Fedderson of Broad Run was fifth in the 100 hurdles (16.72). In the 300 hurdles, Dominon's Kiya Day took fourth (47.65) and Eileen Fauteux of Potomac Falls was fifth at 47.71.

It was a big day for Woodgrove's girls relays as their 4x800 team took first with Houghton, Cromwell, Alex Juzbasich and Thompson clocking 9:50.94 and the Wolverines were runner-up in the 4x400 as Houghton, Thompson, Harpster and Gaynor Houghton combined to finish at 4:11.24. Freedom took fifth at 4:17.77.

The Freedom girls 4x100 was runner-up with Fletcher, Lovepreet Sohal, Asia Brown and Amanda Salami turning in 49.94. Woodgrove took fifth with Harpster, Cathrine Wyatt, Houghton and Ahsley Ahlers timing 51.07.

MaryKate Edwards of Woodgrove took third in the discus at 96-06.

Girls Soccer: All-Cedar Run District Teams Selected - Heritage Puts Four on First Team

(May 27, 2011) - Heritage High School, which has advanced to the Northwest Region girls soccer tournament, has placed four on the All-Cedar Run District team in a vote of the district's coaches.

Danielle Dentler, Natalie Perussault, Madison Flanagan and Caitlin Kick all made the first team for the Pride as did Loudoun Valley's Taylor Payne.

Lacrosse: Loudoun Valley Girls Play at Albemarle for State Bid; Briar Woods Boys, Woodgrove Girls Shoot for Region II Titles

(May 27, 2011) - Three area lacrosse teams remain in action and they all play for big stakes tonight with Loudoun Valley High School playing at Albemarle with a state tournament bid up for grabs and the Briar Woods boys and Woodgrove girls shooting for their first ever Region II titles.

Loudoun Valley (15-3), despite losing some talent to the opening of first-year Woodgrove (14-5), can clinch another state tournament bid in tonight's Northwest Region consolation final at Albemarle (6-8). Despite being on the road, the Vikings should be favored as they beat a Battlefield team, 12-11, in the Cedar Run District finals that clobbered Albemarle, 22-8, in the regional semifinals.

Woodgrove continues its amazing first season by hosting defending VHSL state champion Western Albemarle (16-2) at 6 p.m. in Purcellville. Western Albemarle advanced with a 20-6 win over Freedom, a team Woodgrove beat 13-4 in the Dulles District finals. Woodgrove beat Salem, 15-7, in the semifinals, at team that Western has beaten by a dozen goals twice on the year. Both teams will advance to the state tournament.

Briar Woods (16-3) hits the road tonight with a regional title game at E.C. Glass (17-1) that pits that top two AA teams in the state according to Laxpower.com rankings with E.C. Glass just ahead of Briar Woods.

E.C. Glass advanced with a 13-8 win over Dominion, a team Briar Woods beat 10-8 in the Dulles District finals. The Falcons advanced with a 10-6 win over Western Albemarle, the only team to beat E.C. Glass this season, 6-4 on May 10. The Hilltoppers, however, blasted Western, 16-3, on March 22. Both teams advance to the state tournament.
