Baseball: Broad Run Clinches Dulles District Regular-Season Title and Region II Bid

(May 20, 2011) - The Broad Run High School baseball team captured the Dulles District regular season championship with a 14-5 victory over the Dominion Titans Thursday in a contest played at Freedom High School. The game was called due lightning during the sixth inning. With the win, the Spartans finish with a regular season record of 17-2, including 15-1 in the district.

The win also marks the fifth consecutive season that the Spartans have qualified for the Region playoffs. The team has earned a first round Regional bye due to their regular season finish.

Spartan sophomore AJ Powell improved his season record to 7-0 on the mound for Broad Run. Powell went 4 innings striking out 6 batters on the evening. He allowed 5 hits and 5 runs on the evening. Junior Caleb Adams threw a scoreless fifth inning for the Spartans.

The offense was led by seniors Taylor Clarke and Shea Bargiel. Clarke was 3 for 3 on the night with a double, 2 singles, 2 RBI, and 2 runs scored. Bargiel doubled, singled, walked, scored twice, and had 2 RBI. The team totaled 13 hits on the evening.

The Spartans return to action on Friday when they host Tuscarora in the first round of the Dulles District Tournament. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
