Ashburn (May 25, 2011) - The Briar Woods High boys lacrosse is just one win away from making the VHSL state tournament for the first time after a 13-10 win over Salem Monday in the Region II quarterfinals. The Falcons are not alone as the Dominion boys, Woodgrove girls and Freedom girls are also just one win away from a first state tournament.
Dominion beat Brentsville, 14-5, and will travel to E.C. Glass today in the semifinals while Briar Woods Western Albemarle. The Woodgrove girls edged Monticello, 16-15, and host Salem today while the Freedom girls beat Kettle Run, 16-6, and travel to Western Albemarle today.
Capping off the very good Monday for area lacrosse teams, AAA Loudoun Valley is also one game away from a return trip to states as the Vikings beat Mills Godwin, 23-10, on the road and travel tonight to Osbourn Park in the Northwest Region semifinals.

Despite a long bus ride and a 30-minute lightning delay prior to the start of the game, visiting Salem controlled the first half and led midway through the third quarter but the Falcons, who pride themselves on conditioning, got stronger and stronger as the contest wore on and they owned the final quarter.
Junior Mark Leith tied the game, 7-7, with a goal with just under five minutes to go in the third. Then with 2:56 left in the third, Leith made a nice 1-on-1 move on the right side of the net and scored to put the Falcons up, 8-7. Salem stormed back with a goal by Chad Fisher right off the face-off, just 10 seconds later to tie it, 8-8.
The Briar Woods offense, however, was starting to run efficiently and senior Chris Harris gave it a go from long range and ripped it into the net with 1:40 left in the third to put the Falcons ahead, 9-8, and they would not trail again.
Harris helped BWoods set the tone in the fourth with a bouncer in the back of the net just 45 seconds into the quarter to make it 10-8. Salem sliced the Falcon lead to one, 10-9, when Adam Garst scored from a tough angle with 9:49 left.
Briar Woods junior Justin Little had perhaps the goal of the game with 7:46 left as he was fighting for a ground ball from about 12 yards out and he scooped it up and flung it underhand into the net in one swift motion. With a 2-goal cushion now at 11-9, the Falcons had a bit of a scare as senior goalie Matt Bukovac had to exit during a timeout to the stadium team room with an injury. Despite the back-up warmed up and ready to go ... Bukovac sprinted back onto the field and didn't miss a second in goal.
With a flag down and a man-up situation in hand, the Falcons didn't wait for the advantage as Harris struck again with 3:55 left. The goal gave BWoods a comfortable 3-goal edge at 12-9.
Salem struck with 1:10 left on Peter Chiglinsky's score but the Spartans lost any chance of a comeback when they were flagged for a unsportsmanlike penalty on the ensuing draw and that unreleasable foul left the visitors shorthanded for the final minute.
The Falcons made it a 13-10 final as Little added a goal with 48.8 seconds left.

Dominion Senior Stephen Tarrant had a career night Monday evening as he accounted for half the Titan scoring, tossing in 7 goals and dishing out 1 assist as the Dominion Titan Boys lacrosse team moved to the semi-finals of the State AA Regionals with a convincing 14-5 win over the visiting Brentsville Tigers.
Playing without the services of two key defensive players, the Titans began with what looked to be a deliberate, "control the ball" type of game plan in the first period but by the second period it developed into an all-out offensive barrage, as the Titan's offensive sticks shucked out 49 shots over the course of the game. Titan Soph Nick Kirschke dominated on face-offs, winning 10 of 13, and helped keep the ball on the Titan offensive side of the field for a majority of the game.
In addition to Tarrant, 7 other Titan's figured in the scoring, including Soph Brett Bushman who scored twice and added an assist. The Titans led 2 -1 at the end of the first period, but let loose in the next 3 periods, and held a 13 - 3 lead midway through the 4th. Senior D-Pole Trip Tarro came up with 3 key ground balls on the night to help limit the Tiger's scoring opportunities.
The Titans will take on E.C. Glass in Lynchburg Wednesday evening in the AA Regional Semi-finals.

On a warm, hazy afternoon, Loudoun Valley traveled to Mills Godwin High School in Henrico County to play the Mills Godwin Eagles in a first round regional tournament game.
The Vikings wasted little time in getting their offense in gear as senior Caitlin McGinn scored an unassisted goal 49 seconds into the game giving Valley a 1-0 lead. Valley followed up quickly with two more goals, one each by seniors Sarah Furr and Andrea Mustacchio, increasing their lead to 3-0 with 23:33 left in the first half.
Mills Godwin would finally get on the score board a minute later with a nice shot to cut the deficit to 3-1. Valley’s C. McGinn would counter with her second goal of the game less than a minute later to build the lead to 4-1. Mills Godwin finally got its offense going as the Eagles scored two consecutive goals to cut Valley’s lead to 4-3 with 14:13 left in the first half. Sophomore Megan Williamson responded for Valley as her unassisted goal increased the lead to 5-3.
However, the Eagles would respond right back. Taking advantage of a yellow card called against Valley, Mills Godwin would use the player advantage to get a nice unassisted goal to cut the Vikings lead to 5-4 with 8:07 left in the first half. The remainder of the first half would belong to Valley as the Vikings outscored the Eagles 8-1 to take a 13-5 lead at halftime.
Five different players would score during this stretch, led by sophomores M. Williamson and Cortney Inman and senior A. Mustacchio with two goals each. Both goalkeepers saw plenty of action in the first half.
Valley’s senior goalkeeper, Kelsey Luck, started the game and faced 16 shots, recording eight saves. The Mills Godwin goalkeeper faced 19 shots while making six saves. The Vikings held a slight edge in draws won and ground balls controlled in the first half. This was very much in evidence during the final minutes when the Vikings closed out the first half on the 8-1 run.
The second half saw the Vikings continue their domination. Valley scored the first two goals of the second half to build their lead to 15-5. Mills Godwin responded with their first goal of the second half at the 19:22 mark to cut the deficit to 15-6.
But Valley would respond with five consecutive goals from four different players to build their lead to 20-6 with 12:20 left in the game, pretty much putting the game away. The two teams would pretty much trade goals the remainder of the second half with the final score 23-10, in favor of Loudoun Valley.
The Vikings’ defensive unit, led by seniors Vic Molchan, Megan Daeschner and Allie Herold and junior Rachel Swan, stepped up their efforts and limited the Eagles to just eight shots in the second half.
Valley’s junior goalkeeper, Maggie Beglau, started the second half and was the benefactor of the defensive unit’s strong play. The Eagles’ goalkeeper, who saw 19 shots in the first half, saw another 20 shots in the second half.
The win improves Valley’s overall record to 15-2. Valley was led in scoring by A. Mustacchio with five goals and C. Khosla, K. Ebrahimnejad, M. Williamson and C. Inman with three goals each. As a team, Loudoun Valley scored 23 goals on 39 shots while Mills Godwin scored 10 goals on 24 shots.
Wednesday, May 25, the women’s varsity team travels to Manassas to play Osbourn Park High School for a second round Regional game.
