Leesburg Christian: Lions Take Baseball, Girls Soccer ODACS State Titles

Leesburg (May 24, 2013) - The Leesburg Christian School baseball and girls soccer teams captured Old Dominion Association of Church Schools (ODACS) state titles last weekend.

For the baseball Lions is was a fifth state title in six years and for the girls soccer Lions it was a second straight state title.

Leesburg (Nov. 25, 2012) - The Leesburg Christian School (LCS) Lady Lions varsity volleyball team captured the program's first ever ODACS (Old Dominion Association of Christian Schools) state title recently and finished with a school-record 24-1 overall record, including 14-1 in conference. The squad then went on to finish sixth at a national tournament.

(May 23, 2012) - Leesburg Christians School's athletic program had quite a spring s their baseball, girls soccer and track program all won their respective state championships. LCS competes in the Old Dominion Association of Christian Schools (ODACS) and this is the first time any school has swept all spring sports in the conference.

Leesburg (May 2, 2012) - Leesburg native Katie Wormald, a home schooled student, has signed her National Letter of Intent to play women's soccer next year at NCAA Division II Cedarville University in Ohio.

Wormald is part of a five athletes from the Lady Jackets signing Class of 2012 announced by head coach John McGillivray. She plays travel soccer for the Loudoun Impact and prep soccer with Leesburg Christian School where she was team MVP, captain and an all-tournament performer.

Basketball: Leesburg Christian Captures 1st ODACS State Title; Girls Finish 4th

(Feb. 27, 2011) - The Leesburg Christian boys basketball team captured its first ever ODACS state title on Saturday with a 59-49 victory over rival Heritage Christian in the finals at Faith Baptist in Fredericksburg.

Previously Leesburg Christian had combined for five state titles in soccer and baseball but this was the school's first boys basketball state title.

The team is coached by second-year coach Howie Schlichting. The Lions were led to victory by seniors Garrett Delph, Zachary Mathews and Christian Foss.

The Leesburg Christian girls, coached by Christa Schlichting, finished fourth in the state and return all key players next year.

Basketball: Leesburg Christian Boys and Girls Sweep Pioneer Classic Tournament

(Jan. 19, 2011) - The Leesburg Christian boys and girls basketball teams swept the Pioneer Pioneer Classic Tournament held over the weekend in Edinburg.

The Leesburg boys opened with a 47-20 win over Odenton and the edged Evangel by eight, 46-38. After doubling up on host Valley Baptist, 50-25, Leesburg then beat Evangel again in the finals, 49-37.

The Leesburg girls ran by Keystone Christian Academy, 30-10, to open and then beat host Valley Baptist, 39-33, in a close game. After a big win over Evangel, 42-17, Leesburg again edged the Edinburg locals, 40-35, to take the title.

Baseball: Leesburg Christian Captures Third Straight State Championship

Leesburg (May 18, 2010) - In a day when "back-to-backs" and "three-peats" are rare, the Leesburg Christian School varsity baseball team brought home an unprecedented third straight Old Dominion Association of Christian Schools State Championship.

The Lions started this year's ODACS Final Four -- which was was held on May 14 at Heritage Christian School in Woodbridge -- as the top seed and never looked back.

In the semi-final round on Friday morning, the Lions faced Keystone Christian School from Berryville -- a team that earlier in the season handed Leesburg Christian their first conference defeat in several years.

Eager for revenge, LCS came out strong in the first inning and sent their message, easily winning 20-3. Brothers Zachary and Nicholas Mathews joined forces on the mound to close out the victory, with Zachary starting the contest and Nicholas coming in for relief. The highlight of the game was an "inside the park" home run struck by the Lions' tournament MVP, senior Justin Matzker.

In the championship game on Friday afternoon, LCS faced a surprise opponent that upset the host school to earn their place in the final -- Faith Christian School from Fredericksburg.

Despite the fact that Faith had not beaten Leesburg during the regular season, the Conquerors held the Lions scoreless for the first couple of innings. But the Lions burst onto the scoreboard in the third inning with a number of big hits, including a smash by Matzker that cleared the 350-foot center field fence, landing midway up a clump of trees. From there, the Lions continued their domination for the remainder of the game, blanking the Conquerors 11-0.

The members of the Leesburg Christian School Lions varsity baseball team were Justin Matzker, Nicholas Mathews, Thomas Irwin, Dillon Paulovkin, Gabe Yokoe, Zachary Mathews, Matthew McKenzie, Graham Albright, Logan McCauley, Sam Ganis, Bradley Glausier, Andy Pugh, Elliot Rice, Kyle Williams, Isaac Workman, and Michael Ganis.

The past three championship baseball teams from LCS were coached by Warner Workman. He was assisted this year by Chris Ganis and Kerry Rice.

Softball: Leesburg Christian Ends Regular Season with 20-0 Win, Prepares for May 20 Playoff Game

(May 13, 2010) - Leesburg Christian ended the regular season on Monday on a bang with a 20-0 win over Mountain View Academy. Next up for the Lions is a May 20 playoff date in Standardsville.

Softball Round-up: April 16-17 - Briar Woods Doubles Up on Park View to Sit Alone in First in Dulles District

(Apr. 20, 2010) - The Briar Woods High School softball team made its first ever regional playoff appearance last year after winning the Dulles District tournament and this year the Falcons want to take the regular season title as well. The Falcons took a big step towards that goal by doubling up on Park View, 6-3, on Friday.

The Patriots, previously unbeaten in district, fall to 2-1 in the Dulles and 7-2 overall, while the Falcons now sit at 4-0 and 7-1. Briar Woods faces 4-time district regular-season champ Broad Run, 2-1 and 7-2, tonight in Ashburn at 6 p.m. in another key match-up.

In Friday's win, Briar Woods sophomore Macy Jones snapped a 3-3 tie with a two-run double in the fourth inning and struck out 10 in four innings of relief as the Falcons won on the road.

The Falcons struck first when senior Holly Dominguez opened the game with a single and later scored on a double by Jones.

However, the Patriots (7-2, 2-1) answered in the home half of the first on a two-out RBI-double by Rebecca Patton.

Briar Woods took a 3-1 lead by scoring twice on passed ball in the third, but Park View countered again with two unearned runs in the bottom of the frame on a pair of errors and three singles.

The Falcons wasted no time regaining the lead for good in the top of the fourth. Junior Alex Fierszt drew a one-out walk, and Dominguez followed with a single. Fierszt was erased at third on a fielder’s choice off the bat of junior Kristina Karagiorgis, and, after a passed ball allowed Dominguez and Karagiorgis to advance, Jones followed with another double to plate both runners.

Briar Woods added its final run in the top of the sixth when freshman Lynn Brantley was hit by a pitch and later scored on another passed ball.

Jones, who finished 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three RBIs, was equally as impressive in the circle and earned the victory after striking out 10 of the 13 batters she faced in four innings of relief. She allowed a two-out triple in the bottom of the seventh but fanned the final Patriot hitter to seal the victory.

The loss for the Patriots went to Robin Heironimus, who fell to 7-2 for the season. Heironimus had six strikeouts and walked three. Hitting stars for the Patriots were Sam Thomas with three hits including a triple in the seventh and Patton with two hits, including a double and two RBIs. Ally Rupard also doubled for the Patriots and drove in the other run.

Softball: Leesburg Christian Starts Strong by Focusing on Fundamentals

Fredericksburg (Apr. 2, 2010) – In their second year of fastpitch softball, the Leesburg Christian program is still focusing on the basics of the game but that didn't stop the Lions from sweeping a doubleheader against Fredericksburg Christian to start the season.

In fact, last weeek's DH was the first game ever for several players, but that did not hold them back.

"We really focus on the fundamentals of the game and it gives the girls the confidence they need to step on the field and have fun," stated Lions coach Renee McHale.

The Lions outscored Fredericksburg 3-2 in the first game and 5-1 in the second game.

In the first game, the Lions came from behind twice with runs by Christina Webster, Connie Lambert and Danielle Mees. The Lions pitcher, Claressa Mees, struck out five.

The second game brought two runs by pitcher Mees, while Krystyna Guntle, Macy Mashaw and Christina Webster scored to finish strong with five runs. Mees’ strong pitching struck out eight players for a total of 13 on the afternoon, while catcher Livy Workman showed a strong arm behind the plate. Jessica Stewart had two RBIs while hitting cleanup.

Volleyball: Leesburg Christian Alumni as Well as Lions Soccer Teams Help Raise "Dig Pink" Funds

Leesburg (Nov. 23, 2009) Earlier this month more than 100 people showed up to Leesburg Christian School to watch the Lions volleyball team play along side their alumni and the school's soccer team in a Dig Pink National Breast Cancer Awareness fundraising event.

The stands were loaded with people wearing pink clothing from bows to t-shirts. The event raised over $2,000 for the cause.

Soccer: Leesburg Christian Lions Win Boys State Championship

Leesburg (Oct. 30, 2009) - Despite a season plagued with injuries, the Leesburg Christian varsity boys soccer team endured a weekend of physical play to capture the Old Dominion Association of Christian Schools (ODACS) State Championship.

Seeded fourth in the Oct. 23-24 tournament, hosted by Valley Baptist Christian School in Edinburg, the Lions outlasted previously undefeated Heritage Christian 4-3, despite a valiant comeback attempt in the first semifinal.

That win advanced the Lions to the championship match, where they dominated Evangel Christian 5-2, thanks to multiple goals by tournament MVP Patrick Foss and Colombian-born senior Julian Zuniga.
