Football: Tonight's Briar Woods vs. Broad Run Game is a Battle for a Better Cause in Honor of Cameron Carter

(Aug. 31, 2012) - Tonight's Briar Woods vs. Broad Run high school football game, featuring a match-up of rival schools that have combined for the past four VHSL Division 4 state titles, is also a Battle for a Better Cause as the two schools have linked up to raise funds for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in memory of Cameron Carter.

Carter, the daughter of former Washington Redskins Tom and wife Renee Carter, and sister of Briar Woods High School standout football player Alex Carter, who graduated in June and is now playing at Stanford, passed away earlier this year. She was an 8th grader at Stone Hill Middle School.

Volleyball: NVVA Invitational Kicks off Today in Sterling

(Aug. 31, 2012) - Broad Run High School will join 15 other AAA Northern Virginia schools at the second annual NVVA Invitational which starts today at 3 p.m. at the Northern Virginia Volleyball Center in Sterling. The two-day tournament features action on four courts.

The teams are divided into four groups for pool play:

Pool A: Woodson, Westfield, Fairfax, Washington-Lee
Pool B: South County, Broad Run, Robinson, Marshall
Pool C: West Springfield, Chantilly, Madison, Herndon
Pool D: Oakton, Lake Braddock, South Lakes, Falls Church

(Aug. 31, 2012) - The Potomac Falls High School football team opened the 2012 season with a 23-7 loss to Liberty last Friday but the Panthers had plenty to celebrate about as they honored Panther alum and London Games Olympic Gold swimming medalist Matt McLean.

During the pregame, McLean conducted the coin toss. At halftime, he received standing ovations from both the Liberty-Bealeton crowd and the proud Panther crowd as he took a 'victory lap' in the Olympicmobile/Gator, driven by current Potomac Falls swim coach Neil Costello, who was instrumental in getting Matt and his family to attend the football game.

The crowd exceeded expectations for a non-district game, played before school had begun. Over 150 people waited in line on the track to shake hands with, have their picture taken with, or get the autograph of the 2006 PFHS graduate, who became the first-ever Loudoun Gold Medalist as a member of the men's 4x200 relay squad.

Football: Arneson Runs Wild in Loudoun County's Opener

(Aug. 31, 2012) - Loudoun County High School has a bye tonight but the Raiders probably wish they were back on the field after a fast start to the 2012 season with a 53-21 win over Freedom in South Riding.

The Raiders got a huge game from senior Matt Arneson who rushed for 239 yards on just 14 carries, four of them resulting in TDs. Arenson's average carry gained 17 yards.

Youth Sports: Girls Basketball - Loudoun Freedom Seeks Players for Grades 3 thru 8 AAU Teams

(Aug. 31, 2012) - The Loudoun Freedom is supporting girls AAU basketball teams in the 3rd grade through 8th grade this fall and this winter. They are seeking players interested in playing competitive level basketball, especially over the winter.

Football: Woodgrove Looks to Make it 2-0 Tonight at Brentsville

(Aug. 31, 2012) - Let's face it, Woodgrove High School new head football coach Mike Skinner is used to winning. He did it at Centreville High School where he led the Wildcats to a VHSL Division 5 state title in 2000 and he did it at Stone Bridge High School where he was the defensive coordinator who helped the Bulldogs get to back-to-back title games in 2009 and 2010.

And now Skinner is winning with the Wolverines, who thumped Jefferson County (WV) last Friday in his debut, 52-7, behind 378 yards rushing and go on the road tonight at Brentsville High School.

News: Potomac Falls 10-Year Reunion Celebrating for a Great Cause with 18 Holes for Nicole Outing

(Aug. 31, 2012) - The Potomac Falls High School Class of 2002 is taking advantage of its 10-year reunion the weekend of Sept. 14-16 to come together for a great cause as the organizers are encouraging Panther grads to play in the 18 Holes for Nicole charity golf tournament.

The tournament, which benefits the Nicole Megaloudis Foundation which was founded in memory of a 2003 Potomac Falls grad, gets off with a shotgun start on Sept. 16 at 1p m.. at the Virginia Oaks Golf Club in Gainesville.

"Nicole was a dear friend of mine and many others in our class," said one of the organizers Jen Bergmark. "This year we were lucky enough that the tournament fell on our reunion weekend so we decided to participate in the tournament as part of the weekend activities."

News: Team Joe Charity Golf Tournament Set for Oct. 4

(Aug. 31, 2012) - Online registration is available for the sixth annual Team Joe Charity Golf Tournament, which is scheduled for Oct. 4, 2012 at the Loudoun County Golf and Country Club with a 10 a.m. shotgun start. The tournament, created in 2007, raises funds for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children.

Price is $125 per golfer. You can register here.

The tournament is named for Cheers Sports owner Denny Petrella's son, Joe Petrella, who was born 12 weeks early and weighed only 1.5 pounds. He fought for his life the moment he entered this world. Lucky for Joe he was in the best possible place ~ the NICU at Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children.

Football: Briar Woods QB Trace McSorley Game-by-Game

(Aug. 30, 2012) - Just one game into his junior season and Briar Woods High School quarterback Trace McSorley has already racked up career numbers including nearly 4,500 yards passing, almost 50 touchdowns in the air on his way to a 28-3 record as a starter and two VHSL Division 4 state titles.

McSorely, who tossed a school-record five touchdowns in the Falcons 42-14 season-opening win on Friday over Patriot, will face Broad Run this Friday in a showdown in Ashburn at 7:30 p.m. The Spartans are one of only three teams to beat McSorely and Briar Woods since 2010.

Briar Woods will enter the game Friday at Broad Run on a 15 game winning streak dating back to the Falcons season-opening loss last year to Broad Run, 14-0. The Falcons have won 26 of their last 27.

Football: McSorley Tosses School-Record 5 TDs as Briar Woods Opens Season with 15th Straight Win

Ashburn (Aug. 30, 2012) -Playing their first-ever varsity football game the Patriot Pioneers from Prince William County had the misfortune of facing the 2010 and 2011 AA Division 4 state champion Briar Woods Falcons on their home turf.

Receiving the kickoff, the Pioneers first-ever offensive play, however, was a stunner. Sophomore Cody Agnew unloaded a long, high, spiral that was caught in stride by WR Zak Watson and taken to the Falcon five. Four plays later RB Vic Ceglie scored the Pioneer’s first touchdown. K Jamie Corcoran made good on the extra point and the visitors had a 7-0 lead in less than a minute.

That would be the high point of the evening for the Pioneers as the Falcons ran off six consecutive touchdowns en route to a 42-14 victory. In a game which went to a running clock before half of the third quarter had elapsed the Falcons piled up 474 yards of offense as they won for the 14th consecutive game and for the 26th time in 27 contests. BW junior quarterback Trace McSorley finished with a school record five TDs in the win and has now thrown for more than 4,000 yards in his career.

News: Loudoun County Sheriff's Office Seeks Public's Assistance to Help Locate Missing Leesburg Woman

(Aug. 30, 2012) - The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public'™s assistance to help locate a missing Leesburg woman. Leyla Mastova McCullagh. 36, was last seen with a family member at her home on Evergreen Mills Road on August 13th.

At the time she appeared to be suffering from an unknown medical condition.

Detectives with the Loudoun County Sheriff'€™s Office are concerned for her well-being and are asking anyone with information regarding her whereabouts to contact the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office immediately by calling 703-777-0475.

Golf: Independent Girls Prep Team Opens Play Today

(Aug. 28, 2012) - A new high school golf option for girls teed off today with an independent Cascades team, comprised mostly of girls from Potomac Falls High School, facing Chantilly in a match.

Currently Loudoun County public high schools do not field separate girls golf teams. Girls that want to golf, play on the co-ed teams with boys with the majority of spots on rosters taken up by the boys.

Football: Broad Run Shuts Out Park View, 35-0, to Start Season

(Aug. 28, 2012) - For a quarter in Friday's opener at Park View High School it looked as if visiting Broad Run was stuck in preseason scrimmage mode but sophomore quarterback Brady Reitzel and a stout Spartan defense soon shifted into midseason mode with three touchdowns in the final 4:39 of the first half on the way to a 35-0 shutout.

The long-time rivals -- Broad Run (1969) and Park View (1976) were the third and fourth high schools opened in Loudoun which now has 13 high schools total -- were in a scoreless deadlock when Reitzel, making his starting QB debut, got in the groove, capping off drives with TD runs of 2 and 8 yards and then finding junior Corey Hilberath all alone down the left sidelines for a 40-yard TD.

Broad Run kept the momentum going in the second half, scoring on their first two drives, to make it five consecutive touchdowns and a 35-0 lead. At that point, Broad Run emptied the bench and the game finished quickly with a running clock due to the VHSL "slaughter rule".

The Spartan defense, led by new defensive coordinator Chris Brown who previously coached at Briar Woods and replaced Jason Dawson who left Broad Run to start the new program at John Champe High School, held the Patriots to just 94 total yards (67 rushing on 30 attempts and 27 yards passing) and Park View did not advance the ball into Broad Run territory until late in the game.

News: Loudoun County Sheriff's Office Expands D.A.R.E. Program into County Middle Schools

(Aug. 27, 2012) - The Loudoun County Sheriff'€™s Office will expand the Drug Abuse and Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) Program into Loudoun County Middle Schools during the 2012-2013 school year.

The six-week program, consisting of ten lessons will be provided to all 6th graders in the spring during health and PE classes. A follow-up instructional class will also be taught to all 8th graders. The expansion of the program comes at no extra cost as the classes will be taught by current members of the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officer Unit who are assigned to county middle schools. Previously, the program was offered only to all 5th graders at county elementary schools.

News: VHSL Details Six Classification Playoff Configuration for Each Sport

(Aug. 27, 2012) - The Virginia High School League is nearing a complete overhaul of how public high school playoffs work in the state with a move to a six classification system for almost all sports. The proposed changes will result in an "all in" playoff system where schools advance to a conference level to start their road towards a state championship.

Here is a look at specifics on how playoffs would work for different sports:

• “All in” for each conference.
• Conference champion and runner‐up advance to regional play.

NFL: Washington Redskins Make Roster Moves

Ashburn (Aug. 27, 2012) - The Washington Redskins announced today that they have waived the following players:  RB Antwon Bailey,OL Chris Campbell, RB Lennon Creer, QB Jonathan Crompton, WR Samuel Kirkland, WR Lance Lewis (Waived-Injured), LB Monte Lewis, G Nick Martinez, TE Beau Reliford, CB and Morgan Trent (Waived with Injury Settlement)

In addition, the Redskins released the following veterans: OL James Lee, OL Tony Moll, and K Neil Rackers Additionally, the team has dealt cornerback Kevin Barnes to the Detroit Lions via trade. Offensive tackle Jammal Brown was placed on the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list from the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list.

The team has until 9 p.m. ET on Saturday, Sept. 1 to trim its roster to 53 players. Teams may build a practice squad of eight players beginning at noon ET on Saturday, Sept. 1.

News: Loudoun Public Schools Open Today to 68,170 Students

(Aug. 27, 2012) - The 82 public schools of Loudoun County will open this morning, August 27th, welcoming an estimated 68,170 students for the 2012-13 school year. This year, students again start before Labor Day. The earlier start will allow schools to close on June 6th. This year, LCPS will welcome the addition of one new high school and one new elementary school. The new schools are:

Girls Lacrosse: Loudoun County Assistant Megan Kerns Moves up to Head Coach

Leesburg (Aug. 24, 2012) - Loudoun County High School girls lacrosse assistant coach Megan Kerns has been promoted to head coach of the Raiders girls program. Also, former Loudoun County boys coach Dennis O'Hara will join the girls staff as an assistant coach.

O'Hara stepped down from the boys program after the spring due to a potential conflict with his schedule. With that conflict now cleared up, O'Hara is returning to Loudoun County on the girls side.

Raider AD Ken Wright: "Those conflicts look like they are not going to materialize after all, and so we keep his knowledge and leadership at LCHS, something I could not have envisioned in June. A great gain for our girls lax program, and the whole athletic program."

Redskins: Clinton Portis Announces Retirement; Exits as Franchise's Second-Leading Rusher

Ashburn (Aug. 23, 2012) -– Clinton Portis, a nine-year NFL veteran running back responsible for the two most prolific single seasons in rushing yardage in Washington Redskins history, announced his retirement Thursday at a news conference at Redskins Park.

Portis — who became revered in Washington not only for his production, but also for his colorful personality and his tenacity in pass protection — exits the NFL as the Redskins’ second-leading rusher in team history. Portis ranks second in team history in rushing yardage (6,824), carries (1,667) and rushing touchdowns (46). His 1,516-yard and 1,487-yard seasons in 2005 and 2008, respectively, represent the highest single-season rushing yardage totals in franchise history. Including his 2004 and 2007 seasons, Portis is responsible for four of the top 10 single-season rushing performances in the franchise’s 80-year history.

Girls Volleyball: Battle of Ashburn Features 9 Matches Saturday

(Aug. 23, 2012) - The girls volleyball season will kick into high gear quickly with Saturday's Battle of Ashburn tournament which features nine matches between Briar Woods, Broad Run and Stone Bridge on the freshman, JV and varsity levels.

Broad Run High School is the host this year with $6 admission gaining entrance to:

Golf: Milestone! Champe Secures First Victory for New School in Any Sport!

(Aug. 23, 2012) - The John Champe High School golf team made history this week when the Knights became the first team in the new school's "history" to win an athletic contest with a 190-193 win over Park View at Algonkian golf course.

Champe opens on Monday in Aldie, becoming Loudoun's 13th public high school and 8th to open since 2000.
