(May 31, 2013) - Tuscarora High School hosted a signing ceremony on May 29 for seven Husky athletes that will continue their athletic careers in college. The athletes represented the football, softball, and soccer programs.

Baseball: Aldie Senators Valley Baseball League Team Opens Tonight at John Champe High School

Aldie (May 31, 2013) - The Aldie Senators open their regular Valley Baseball League season tonight, Friday, May 31 against the Front Royal Cardinals at John Champe High School. Game time is 7:30 p.m. and the gates will open at 7.

Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for senior citizens and for children 12 and under. Military personnel and veterans are admitted free. Season passes are also available and can be purchased at the gate or via the Senators website at www.aldiesenators.com.

Little League players that wear their team jerseys at any Tuesday or Wednesday night home games during the season are also admitted free.

The Senators this season will feature a roster with some players that have local connections including: Matt Malcane (OF, Seton Hill/Freedom High School), J.J. Sarty (SS, William & Mary/Woodgrove) and Kyle McCormack (P, Frostburg State/Broad Run). Matthew Reed (C, Clemson/Woodgrove) was potentially playing but is fighting an injury.

Baseball: Heritage's Turner to Play at Roanoke College

(May 31, 2013) - Every senior on the Heritage High School baseball team will now play in college with the announcement that Zach Turner will play at NCAA Division III Roanoke College in Salem. Heritage now has 23 athletes on the college choice chart, third most behind Woodgrove (24) and Stone Bridge (27).

Wrestling: Loudoun Valley SR Cassada-Maple Commits to Oklahoma State

(May 31, 2013) - The AA defending state champion Woodgrove High School softball team needed a 15-strikeout performance from junior Jazmyn Rohrer and a game-wining RBI by junior Rachel Harris in the bottom of the 10th inning to clinch a return to the state tournament and a trip to Powhatan tonight to play in the Region II finals.

(May 31, 2013) - The 25-1 Stone Bridge High School softball team will take the field at 4 p.m. today in the Northern Region finals against Liberty District foe Madison at Falls Church High School with some new honors in tow as senior shortstop Niki Prince has been named the region's Player of the Year and three of her teammates -- senior pitcher Kelly McDaniel, sophomore third base Emily Kenny and senior outfielder Sydney Broderick -- have been named first team in a vote of the region's coaches.

And, quite naturally, Stone Bridge's Billy Rice has been named the Coach of the Year.

Soccer: 4 for States! Briar Woods Sweeps Boys, Girls DH; Woodgrove Girls Keep Rolling, Tuscarora Boys Survive OT Scare

(May 31, 2013) - The Briar Woods High School boys and girls soccer teams were simply bigger and stronger than their opponents Thursday as they muscled their way into the AA state tournament with the boys edging Park View, 2-1, and the girls dominating Tuscarora, 3-0, in a Region II semifinal doubleheader in Ashburn.

It will be an all-Dulles District Region II finals in soccer yet again as the Woodgrove girls continued their postseason offensive explosion behind senior Sarah Hardison with a 3-0 win at Fauquier and the Tuscarora boys remained unbeaten on Diego Rodriguez's goal in overtime for a 1-0 win over Sherando.

Tuscarora will host Briar Woods at 7 p.m. in Leesburg in the Region II boys final tonight and Briar Woods will  host Woodgrove at 7 p.m. in the girls final. All four teams advance to next week's AA state tournament, which the Woodgrove girls won in 2012 and the Tuscarora boys finished runner-up. Baseball: Bowman's 3-Hitter Leads Woodgrove into Region II Championship Game, Clinches States for Young Wolverines

Sterling (May 30, 2013) – Backed by a 3-hit, 9-strikeout performance by sophomore Kaleb Bowman, Woodgrove High School knocked off Dulles District champion Potomac Falls Panthers, 2-0, in a Region II semifinal that decided which school would represent Loudoun County in the regional finals Friday night and next week's Virginia High School League AA state tournament.

“We’ll worry about tomorrow when we get to tomorrow,” said Woodgrove coach Brad Bauder on his team’s preparation for the Region II championship game Friday at Sherando. “But we’re going to celebrate tonight. We’re going to the state tournament. These kids are excited, they believe, they’re hungry. I’m so happy for them. I’m glad I get to be a part of it.”

Bauder, the Dulles District Coach of the Year, has had to conquer adversity all season long to lead his team on this deep playoff run.

Woodgrove (17-6) clinched its first ever state trip despite a roster shake-up that saw 10 players leave the team after the start of the season. When the dust settled, Bauder called on support from the JV ranks to replenish the roster and the Woodgrove squad remaining included just four juniors to go with 10 sophomores and seven freshman.

One side affect of the dramatic lineup change was that it "created a strong team bond", according to Bowman.

“We had a big situation where we had to make some roster changes at the beginning of the year and we sat down and had a game plan,” Bauder said. “It took a few games for the kids to really buy in, but now they believe. I’ll tell you what it’s hard to beat a team that believes.”

Softball: Stone Bridge Swats Way to State Tournament

(May 30, 2013) - The Stone Bridge High School softball team, which is averaging 13.5 runs per game in the postseason, had just an average night in the Northern Region semifinals as the Bulldogs bashed their way to a 13-1 win over Langley.

Stone Bridge (25-1), with 81 runs in six postseason games and 286 runs total, has qualified for the state tournament and will play Liberty District rival Madison Friday in the Northern Region finals.

College Choice Chart: Class of 2013 Now Up to 171 Athletes Committed to Play at Next Level

(May 30, 2013) - The Viva Loudoun College Choice Chart is now up to 171 athletes from the Class of 2013 that will play at the next level. Recently added from Tuscarora High School:

Soccer: Bounces Go Broad Run Boys Way, Not Stone Bridge Girls in Regional Semifinals

(May 30, 2013) - Soccer can be a funny game. Sometimes the bounces go your way and other times they simply don't. On Wednesday it was the Broad Run High School boys with the right bounces and the Stone Bridge High School girls not as fortunate.

Broad Run faced the prospects of overtime when Mountain View was awarded a late penalty kick but Wildcat senior Omar Munoz's kick clanged off the right post. Moments later, the Wildcats keeper slipped while making a play on a ball and the Spartans (12-3-3) padded their lead and went on to win the Northwest Region semifinal 2-0.

News: Good Samaritan Carjaked in Lansdowne by 63-year-old Woman

(May 30, 2013) - While most of the attention in Loudoun County Wednesday was focused on the fatal shooting at Costco in Sterling, there was a bizarre carjacking just before 10 p.m. in Lansdowne where a 24-year-old Ashburn man had his "Good Samaritan" act turn into a carjacking when a 63-year-old Leesburg woman reportedly pulled a knife on him and took his car.

Mary C. Hardy, 63, of Leesburg, was charged with carjacking and public intoxication after a reported carjacking in the area of Merchant Mill Terrace and Marvins Mill Terrace in Lansdowne. Deputies responded to the area after they received a report from the victim, a 24-year-old Ashburn man, who reported that he offered a ride to a female who later pulled a knife and took his vehicle.

(May 30, 2013) - Washington Redskins start quarterback Robert Griffin III, who has been renting in the Riverside Creek community of Leesburg, is staying local with the purchase of a $2.5 million mansion in the Creighton Farms community of Aldie.

News: Victim in Fatal Shooting at Costco by Loudoun Sheriff's Deputy Identified as 38-year-old Mhai Scott

(May 30, 2013) - The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office is investigating a deputy related fatal shooting at a warehouse store in Sterling Tuesday. The victim has been identified as Mhai Scott, 38, of Sterling.

Around 3 p.m. the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a disorderly subject at the Costco located in the 21300 block of Price Cascades Plaza. The suspect, identified as Scott was reportedly wielding a knife and scissors and threatening employees at the store.

Breaking News: Shooting at Costco in Sterling Leaves Woman Dead, Deputy Wounded

(May 29, 2013) - According to local media reports there was a shooting at Costco in Sterling this afternoon and among the two wounded is a Loudoun County Sheriff's deputy. We are following this breaking story and will update it as information becomes available.

4:07 p.m.: Loudoun County Sheriff's released this statement: The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office is investigating a shooting that just occurred at the Costco in Sterling. The area is contained and secure at this time. An investigation is underway.

5:02 p.m.: WTOP is reporting that a woman is dead from today's incident that started out as a disorderly conduct call. A deputy has been wounded and is being treated.

5:05 p.m.: Washington Post is reporting that the woman killed worked in food preparation at the Costco in Sterling.

5:10 p.m.: Leesburg Today story has an assistant manager at Costco calling the woman at the center of the shooting a "customer demonstration services provider". Article also says wounded deputy was on cell phone while being taken out on stretcher, which would be great news.

5:15 p.m. WJLA is reporting that the woman killed was brandishing a knife and that deputies attemped to "Taser" her before shooting her.

5:19 p.m. NBC News4 is reporting that all shots fired were by one deputy and that the deputy wounded was shot in the leg during the altercation.

The Skinny: Wolverines have scored 21 runs in two regional games. In a game delayed by two hours due to storms, Woodgrove trailed 2-0 heading into the sixth inning but the Wolverines, got revenge for Monticello knocking them out of the Regionals in 2012 by scoring seven runs and then adding three more in the seventh inning for good measure. Potomac Falls 1, Millbrook 0

The Skinny: Once again, the Panthers showed a flair for the dramatic breaking open a scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth with junior Alex James opening the inning with a single and freshman Michael Smith scoring the game-winner on a two-out single.

The Skinny: The Falcons lead 2-0 on the road but Skyline came back to end BWoods season.Woodgrove 5, Loudoun County 3

The Skinny: Trailing 5-2 in the top seventh inning, the Raiders showed heart by scoring a run with two outs and putting the tying runners on base but Woodgrove junior pitcher Jaxmyn Rohrer registered a strike out to send Woodgrove into the semifinals. 

Woodgrove utilized a combination of speed, hitting and perfectly placed bunts in the fourth inning to plate four runs. Senior Alayna Furr started the inning with a slicing double just inside the left field foul line. She moved to third on senior Mackenzie Moler's bunt single and scored on a pitch that got away at the plate. Senior Ashley Cole walked and stole second to put two runners in scoring position and both came home on junior Rachel Harris' safety squeeze bunt as the Raiders tried to get Moler at the plate and an error allowed Cole to scoot home as well.

Freshmen Halle Daughtry and Adriana Erickson then made it 4-0 as Daughtry reached on a single to the left side hole, sending pinch runner sophomore Grace Sanderson into scoring position and then she scored when Erickson stroked a single up the middle.

Loudoun County got one run back in the top of the fifth on junior Courtney Amos' two-out solo home run to left-center. The Raiders added another run in the sixth inning when senior pitcher Kiley Jacobus reached on an infield single, moved around on a fielding error and scored on junior Kayleigh Kent's RBI single.

Woodgrove added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth with senior Meghan Roush walking, moving over on a sacrifice and ground out and then scoring on Moler's dying 2-out double that dropped in just out of reach in left field.

County made the finish interesting in the top of the seventh when seven times the Raiders were down to their last strike but remained fighting. Senior Sierra Jackson just beat out an infield hit with two outs and juniro Brittney Platt followed with a double over the third base bag to make it 5-3.

Jacobus then beat out an infield single that nicked off of Rohrer, who remained calm and ended the game on a strikeout with the potential go-ahead run at the plate.

Leesburg (May 28, 2013) - Tuscarora High School’s Justin Carey transitioned from center midfielder to forward at just the right time as he connected with the game’s only goals in the 55th and 65th minutes giving the Huskies the advantage over Potomac Falls, 2-0, in the Region II quarterfinals Tuesday.

“We took him out of the central midfield and moved him up to striker just trying to get another push from somebody else, a little bit of effort up there,” said Tuscarora coach Dave Gryder, who notched career win No. 200 with the victory. “He got the ball at a good opportunity and made a good shot. He’s got the scoring ability. We’re using him at center midfielder this year to control the ball, but we know he can finish.”

Baseball: Fletcher Swings Momentum with 3-Run Blast as Loudoun Valley Beats Heritage, 10-4, in Region Opener

Leesburg (May 27, 2013) - A monumental momentum swing during the first round of the Region II baseball tournament came off the bat of Loudoun Valley High School’s Chad Fletcher in the form of a 3-run home run over the scoreboard in left field as the Vikings went on to defeat Heritage, 10-4.

“One swing of the bat, momentum can change in a game whether it’s a home run or a groundball with a double play,” said Fletcher, a senior first baseman. “I was just trying to make something go for my team. I hit it pretty good and gave us some momentum.”

Softball: Briar Woods Emilie Ball Called Cancer a "Curve Ball" but She Beat the Odds to Play Her Senior Season

 (May 27, 2013) - Last October Briar Woods High School senior Emilie Ball had her world turned upside down overnight. Even though she didn't have any symptoms or illness, a relative noticed a lump and encouraged her to have it checked out. She was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma cancer.

"It came out of the blue ... it was a curve ball, definitely," said Ball.

And her first thought was: "I won't be able to play softball my senior year."

"It was absolutely shocking when we found out about Emilie," said Briar Woods coach Chris Starke. "Our primary concern was her health and recovery."

Ball, whose father Keith was just named to the current class of Park View High School's Athletic Hall of Fame, comes from an incredible strong family and Emilie, with the help of her family, neighbors and teammates went full throttle at beating the cancer, including an energy-sapping 12 weeks of extremely aggressive chemotherapy. Some sessions lasted eight hours.

"There were weeks when I couldn't get out of bed because my body couldn't handle it," said Emilie.

Boys Soccer: Tuscarora Boys Soccer Add Dulles Tournament Title to Resume

(May 27, 2013) - The Tuscarora High School boys soccer remained unbeaten on the year with a 1-0 win over Briar Woods in the Dulles District tournament championship game which was suspended Thursday night and complete on Friday.

Huskies midfielder Sergio Resendiz scored on a free kick after the game restarted with about 18 minutes left on Friday to give Tuscarora the title. The Huskies are 17-0-2 on the year and looking for a return trip to the state playoffs, where they finished runner-up in 2012, when the Region II tournament starts this week. Tuscarora hosts the winner of Potomac Falls at Fluvanna on Tuesday in the regional quarterfinals.

College Corner: Woodgrove Grad Sarty Makes CAA Baseball All-Tournament Team

(May 27, 2013) - Woodgrove High School grad J.J. Sarty hit .471 in the CAA tournament, helping William & Mary to the championship game where they fell to Towson, 5-2. Sarty, a freshman has helped the Tribe to a school-tying 37 wins this season, and was named to the CAA All-Tournament team.

Men's Lacrosse: Stone Bridge Grad Derek Maltz Nets Game Winner with 19.2 Seconds Left to Send Syracuse into National Title Game

(May 26, 2013) - All it takes is one goal and junior Derek Maltz (Stone Bridge High School/2010) provided it. He picked up a rebound in front of the Denver cage and scored with 19.2 seconds left to propel No. 1 seed Syracuse (16-3) to 9-8 victory against the fourth-seeded Pioneers (14-5) in the NCAA men's lacrosse semifinals Saturday, May 25 at Lincoln Financial Field. Maltz's goal capped a furious rally that saw the Orange tally five of the game's last six goals to overcome a 7-4 deficit entering the fourth quarter. News: Graduation Ceremonies, Speakers Set for Loudoun County Public Schools

(May 26, 2013) - Loudoun County Public School will hold 18 graduation and completion ceremonies this spring across its 13 public high schools and other programs.

Softball: Woodgrove Takes Dulles District Tournament Title, 1-0, Over Briar Woods on Vennitti's 3-Hit Shutout

Purcellville (May 25, 2013) - Woodgrove High School junior Corinne Vennitti threw a 3-hit shutout and senior Taylor Kilgour drove in the game's only run as the Wolverines added the Dulles District softball tournament title to their regular-season crown with a 1-0 win over Briar Woods Friday in blustery conditions.

Woodgrove will host the winner of Monday's Loudoun County vs. James Wood game in a quarterfinal on Tuesday. Briar Woods is on the road Tuesday at Skyline in a quarterfinal.

Baseball: J.B. Bukauskas Tosses 2-Hitter to Lead Stone Bridge Over Yorktown, 1-0, in Northern Region First Round

(May 25, 2013) - J.B. Bukauskas left no doubt as to why he was named this week as the AAA Northern Region Pitcher of the Year as a sophomore as the Bulldog threw a 2-hitter Friday night to lead Stone Bridge High School to a 1-0 win at Yorktown in the first round of the Northern Region tournament. Senior Matt Hough had the game's lone RBI.

Stone Bridge faces Oakton at 1 p.m. Monday at Lake Braddock High School in the regional quarterfinals.

Baseball: Potomac Falls' Engelmann Outduels Heritage's Hopeck as Panthers Win Dulles District Tournament Title

Sterling (May 24, 2013) - The top four hitters in the Potomac Falls High School batting order combined for six hits, reached base eight times and scored all four runs in the Panthers 4-3 win over Heritage Friday night in the Dulles District baseball tournament championship. It was the Panthers third title in the last five years.

“The top of our order needs to get it started,” senior cleanup hitter Zachary Engelmann said. “We're knocking in runs. But it was a total team effort. We need the whole order to win games. Everyone is important and everyone showed up tonight.”

(May 25, 2013) - It was a huge night of high school playoff sports Friday, May 24 with the Tuscarora Boys soccer, Potomac Falls baseball and Woodgrove softball all claiming Dulles District tournament titles. The Woodgrove girls won the AA Northern Sectional title and the Stone Bridge baseball and softball teams advanced to the Northern Region quarterfinals.

(May 24, 2013) - Stone Bridge High School sophomore J.B. Bukauskas has been named the Northern Region Pitcher of the Year in a vote of the region's coaches. Madison's Ben Socher was named the Player of the Year and Warhawks skipper Mark "Pudge" Gjormand was named Coach of the Year.

(May 24, 2013) - You can catch a couple of local grads on national TV Saturday as Stone Bridge High School grad Derek Maltz and Loudoun Valley High School grad Chris Daddio will take the field for Syracuse University as the top-ranked Orange take on No. 4 Denver at 5 p.m. in the NCAA Final Four at Lincoln Financial Field in Phileadelphia.

The other other semifinal pits No. 7 Duke against unranked Cornell at 2:30 p.m.

Leesburg Christian: Lions Take Baseball, Girls Soccer ODACS State Titles

Leesburg (May 24, 2013) - The Leesburg Christian School baseball and girls soccer teams captured Old Dominion Association of Church Schools (ODACS) state titles last weekend.

Track and Field: Saving the Best for Last - Loudoun County 4x400 Meter Relay Team Gives Raiders the Region II Title

(May 23, 2012) - The Loudoun County High School boys track and field team saved the best for last Wednesday as the Raiders 4x400 meter relay team sprinted to first place in the final even of the night and it was enough to move the Raiders into the top spot at the Region II meet at Fluvanna High School.

Spring Sports: Playoff Scores for May 22

(May 23, 2013) - The Loudoun Valley girls lacrosse, Dominion boys lacrosse and Briar Woods boys tennis all clinched state tournament spots on Wednesday, while two local lacrosse games -- Woodgrove at Loudoun County boys and Tuscarora at Woodgrove girls -- with States on the line were suspended by the weather and will resume tonight.

Championships were won as well as the Loudoun County boys took the Region II track and field meet to highlight a great showing by the Dulles District and Freedom's Alex Cragg not only won the AAA Northwest Region boys tennis singles title but teamed with Brian Park to take the doubles championship as well:
