Swim: Potomac Falls Grad Matt McLean Makes 2013 FINA World Championship U.S. Roster

(July 2, 2013) - Potomac Falls High School grad Matt McLean has qualified for the 2013 FINA World Championship U.S. Roster in the 400 meter freestyle and the 4x200 freestyle men's relay. The Sterling native swam in the trials as a member of the University of Virginia Aquatic club.

McLean qualified in the 400 by finishing second at the Phillips 66 Nationals recently. He won a gold medal at the 2012 Olympic Games in London as a member of the 4x200 relay team.

Connor Jaeger won the 400 meters at Nationals with a 3:45.89 while McLean finished runner-up at 3:46.14.

The 15th FINAL World Championships start in Barcelona in 17 days, running from July 19 thru Aug. 4, 2013.

Swim: Dominion SR Swim Standout Aidan O'Hara Signs with Loyola University

Sterling (May 7, 2013) - Dominion High School senior Aidan O’Hara has signed a National Letter of Intent to swim with Loyola University in Maryland.

Swim: Freedom Names Kim Koehler as New Head Boys, Girls Coach

(March 20, 2013) - Freedom High School athletic director Matt Oblas announced Tuesday that assistant coach Kim Koehler has been promoted to the head boys and girls swimming coach for the 2013-14 winter season.

Oblas: "Coach Koehler is obviously no stranger to the swim program, having served most recently as the assistant swim coach. She brings a wealth of expertise and swimming knowledge and will serve the program very well."

Koehler replaces Brent Miller.

In other coaching news at Freedom, Ernest Herring was approved as golf coach for the fall at the March 12 school board meeting.

Briar Woods: Three More Falcons to College Level - Barta (Football/William and Mary), Basso (Women's Soccer/Shippensburg) and Haufler (Swim/Villanova)

(Feb. 18, 2013) - Briar Woods High School has had three more senior athletes make their college playing choices with Kristin Haufler signing her National Letter of Intent to swim at NCAA Division I Villanova, Mike Barta accepting a preferred walk on status with the William and Mary football program and Leah Basso signed her National Letter of Intent to play women's soccer at Shippensburg University. • Senior safety Mike Barta has accepted a preferred walk on at William and Mary. Barta has been instrumental in the Falcons three straight state championship runs. He is a two-year starter at safety and coach Charlie Pierce says that Barta "did an outstanding job in our secondary. Mike was outstanding in our coverage checks, a sure tackler and a ball hawk. Mike is an outstanding student and a tremendous worker and knows what it takes to win."    
  
• Leah Basso, signed a National Letter of Intent to play Division 2 women’s soccer at Shippensburg University in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania. Leah is a senior at Briar Woods and will attend Ship and play soccer this fall. 

• Kristin Haufler has signed a National Letter of Intent to swim for Villanova University starting this fall. 

Swim: USA Swimming Bans Loudoun-Based Swim Coach Michael Pliuskaitis

(Feb. 18, 2013) - The Washington Post reported over the weekend that Michael Pliuskaitis, formerly the head coach at Loudoun County-based SNOW Swimming, has been placed on USA Swimming's permanently banned list resulting from rules violations relating to improper conduct with athletes.

The official date of the ban is Aug. 6, 2012, though it only became official last week. There is more on this story from the SwimmingWorld.

Girls Swim: Viva Loudoun Top Times Final Update 2012-13

(Feb. 18, 2013) - The Viva Loudoun Girls Top Swim Times charts have been updated for the final time this 2012-13 season with times from the AA and AAA state meets held over the weekend.

There were big shake-ups in the top of the relay charts with Heritage finishing No. 1 at 200 medley, Tuscarora tops at 200 free relay and Dominion No. 1 at 400 free relay.

Stone Bridge's Andi Mack finishes No. 1 in the 200 free, 50 free, 100 free and 500 free while Heritage's Kaleigh Rosenburg is tops in the 200 IM and 100 breast and teammate Carrie Lee is on top in the 100 fly and 100 back.

Boys Swim: Viva Loudoun Top Times Final Update

(Feb. 14, 2013) - The Viva Loudoun Boys Top Swim Times charts have been updated for the final times this season with the AA and AAA state meet results.

The Heritage boys, which did not lead a relay time prior to States, swam away with the season-best times in the 200 and 400 yard relays. Potomac Falls kept the 200 medley top time.

Dominion's Aidan O'Hara saved the best for last and finished on top in three events: 200 and 500 free and 100 back. Freedom's Michael Harman was tops in the 50 and 100 free. Others best in their event: Potomac Falls' William Lin (200 IM), Briar Woods' Brennan Maxwell (100 fly) and Champe's Joaquin Gabriel (100 breast). (send any edits to dan.sousa@vivaloudoun.com)

Swim: Heritage SR Kaleigh Rosenburg Takes Two State Titles at A/AA Meet

(Feb. 16, 2013) - Heritage High School senior Kaleigh Rosenburg finished her Pride career in style as the University of Virginia bound swimmer took state titles Saturday in both the 200 yard IM and 100 yard breast at the Virginia High School League A/AA state meet held at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center.

Rosenburg shaved more than three seconds off her prelim time in the 200 IM to win going away at 2:04.25 with the runner-up Annie Lane of William Byrd at 2:07.14. She saved the best for her last individual event as she broke the state record in the 100 breast with a 1:02.12 swim, finishing more than three seconds ahead of runner-up Lane again (1:05.80).

Rosenburg also swam on the Pride's sixth place 200 Medley and 400 free relay teams.

There were other double medalists from Loudoun including Briar Woods Lizzie Mittan (6th 200 free, 4th 500 free), Heritage's Carrie Lee (4th 100 fly, 3rd 100 back), Potomac Falls' William Lin (4th 200 IM, 3rd 500 free) and Dominion's Aidan O'Hara (2nd 500 free, 4th 100 back).

The Potomac Falls and Heritage boys each medaled in two relays.

Swim: Northwest Region Meet - Harman, Freedom Sprinters Make Waves

(Feb. 13, 2013) - Freedom High's Michael Harman was second in the 50 free and fifth in the 100 free and swam anchor of the Eagles runner-up 200-yard free relay team at the AA Northwest Region meet over the weekend.

Harman set schools records in both the 50 and 100 and the Eagles relay team was also a school best time.

Placing top six to advance automatically to States also included Broad Run's Michael Kopecky (5th in 50 free), Freedom's Austen Bundy (6th in 100 fly)

Swim: Area Teams Show Strong at Region II Meet

Swim: Freedom Girls Win First Ever Cedar Run District Title

(Feb. 2, 2013) - Freedom High School swim coach Brent Miller -- who just two weeks ago donated his kidney to a family friend -- was supposed to sit down at Friday's Cedar Run District meet at the Freedom Aquatics Center in Manassas but his girls team it hard as they rallied for the school's first ever district swim title.

"My swimmers kept telling me to sit down because I was standing up and cheering too much," said Miller. "We were down by 30 early on and didn't take the lead until after the 200 free relay. It was a lot of fun; total team effort."

(Jan. 29, 2013) - A Baltimore Ravens vs. New England Patriots football match-up normally puts Freedom High School swim coach Brent Miller at odds with good family friend Mary Davis as Miller is a huge Ravens fan and Davis, originally from the Boston area, is a big-time Patriots fan.

When the two teams met a week ago in the AFC Championship game for the second straight year, Miller teased Davis that she should root at least a little bit for Baltimore ... after all, she was the recipient less than 48 hours earlier of a kidney transplant courtesy of Miller.

"I told Mary that she had a little purple in her now so she had to root for the Ravens," said Miller in an interview Friday as he continues his rapid recuperation from the operation that took place on Jan. 18 at Fairfax Inova Hospital.

Swim: Stone Bridge's Andi Mack Takes Liberty 200 Free Title

(Jan. 28, 2013) - Stone Bridge High School Andi Mack captured the 200 free and took second in the 100 free at Saturday's AAA Liberty District swim meet at Audrey Moore.

Mack moves onto the Northern Region meet along with teammates:

Swim: Potomac Falls Boys, Dominion Girls Take Dulles District Titles

(Jan. 28, 2013) - The Potomac Falls High School boys swim team took their second straight Dulles District meet title Saturday at Claude Moore and the Panthers 8th overall district titles in the 12 years since the district was formed.

News: Friday Activities Rescheduled Including Dulles and Liberty District Swim Meets

(Jan. 25, 2013) - Forecast for snow and already ice side streets in Loudoun has promoted Loudoun County Public Schools officials to release students one hour early today and cancel all after school athletic events.

Dulles District swim is now rescheduled for noon on Saturday at Claude Moore and the Liberty District two-day meet is now going to be a one-day meet with timed finals starting Saturday at 5:30 p.m. at Audrey Moore.

(Dec. 21, 2012) - Just in time for Saturday's slate of high school swim meets, Viva Loudoun has released its first Top Swim Times for girls swimming for the 2012-13 season. This year we have expanded our ranking to 20 swimmers in each event.

Dominion sits on top of two relays (200 free, 400 free) with Heritage leading the 200 medley relay.

Stone Bridge's Andi Mack and Heritage's Kaleigh Rosenburg dominate the top times with Mack posting best times in the 50, 100, 200 and 500 freestyle races and Rosenburg tops in the 200 IM, 100 fly and 100 breast. Only Heritage's Carrie Lee (100 back) breaks up the Andi and Kaleigh monolopoly.

Five swimmers from five different high schools are leading events with Potomac Falls' William Lin tops in three (200 IM, 500 free, 100 breast) and Stone Bridge's Nicholas Kost with the best time in two events (200 free, 100 free). Other leaders: Freedom's Michael Harmon (50 free), Briar Woods' Brennan Maxwell (100 fly) and Dominion's Aidan O'Hara (100 back).
