Semfinal Saturday: Baseball, Softball, Soccer Teams Play to Earn Trip to Sunday State Championships; Lax, Tennis Hold State Finals

(June 8, 2013) - The weather this week has turned VHSL's traditional State Title Saturday into Semifinal Saturday as teams battle today in the baseball, softball and soccer state semifinals with a Sunday state championship date on the line.

Tennis: Region II Boys and Girls Team Tournament Brackets - Dulles Teams Ace Quarterfinals

(May 20, 2013) - The Region II boys and girls team tennis tournaments got underway Monday with quarterfinal action, and Dulles District teams fared well with the Loudoun County boys knocking off perennial power Western Albemarle on the road, 5-1, and the Briar Woods boys blanked Powhatan, 5-0, at home.

The Dominion girls beat Kettle Run, 5-1, at home to advance also.

Tennis: Loudoun County's Jack McLister, Alexa Kling Take Dulles District Singles Titles; Freedom Boys Advance to Northwest Region Team Semifinals

(May 14, 2013) - Loudoun County High School sophomore Jack McLister and freshman Alexa Kling each won Dulles District tennis tournament singles titles on Monday.

McLister defeated Jake Stapleton of Dominion, 6-4, 6-2 in the finals and Kling defeated Dominique Huynh of Dominion, 6-3, 6-1 in the other finals.

The doubles tournament took place today. Last week the team tournament was held with Briar Woods sweeping both the boys and girls tournaments. The Falcons beat the regular-season champion Dominion Titans in the girls finals and in the boys finals it was the Falcons over Loudoun County.

Freedom One Win Away from AAA States

The Freedom High School boys tennis team continued its postseason run with a 5-1 win at Osbourn Park on Monday to move into the Northwest Region team tennis semifinals. The Eagles are one win away from making it to the AAA state tournament. They travel to Roanoke on Wednesday to face Western Valley District champion Patrick Henry.

Broad Run, the Cedar Run District regular-season boys champion, saw its season end with a tough 5-4 loss at home to Colonial Forge, which now faces Albemarle in the other semi Wednesday.

The Freedom girls had their excellent season end with a 5-1 loss to Franklin County.

Tennis: Briar Woods, Loudoun County Advance to Today's Dulles Finals; Dominion Girls to Host Briar Woods/Tuscarora Winner

(May 10, 2013) - Dulles District regular-season boys tennis champion Briar Woods remained on unbeaten on the season with a 5-0 win over Dominion Thursday in the district tournament semifinals. The Falcons (16-0) will host Loudoun County (15-1) at 3 p.m. in the finals.

The Raiders lone loss on the season was on April 25 to the Falcons, 6-3.

In the girls tournament, regular-season champion Dominion (16-1) defeated Loudoun County, 5-0, to advance to today's finals. The Titans will host the winner of Briar Woods (11-4) vs. Tuscarora (14-2) at 3 p.m. Those two teams were locked at 4-4 yesterday when their match was called due to weather. They took to the courts today at 1 p.m. to finish the No. 3 doubles match to determine which team advances.

(May 10, 2013) - The 2013 Northwest Region boys and girls tennis tournaments open play today with the Freedom boys hosting George Washington-Danville and the Broad Run girls at Riverbend in first round action.

The Broad Run boys and Freedom girls have byes into Monday's semifinals.

Girls Tennis: Dominion Wins Dulles Regular-Season Crown; Freedom to Host Patriot for Cedar Run Tournament Title

(May 3, 2013) - Below are updated girls tennis standings for Dulles, Cedar Run and Liberty districts plus a look at the playoff picture:

Dulles District: Dominion wrapped up a perfect 9-0 Dulles season with a win over Briar Woods, avenging the Titans only loss on the year.

Cedar Run District: Freedom will host Patriot Monday for the Cedar Run tournament title after the Pioneers beat Broad Run in the semifinals.

Liberty District: Langley has won the regular season title.

(March 11, 2013) - Ready or not ... the spring sports season started this afternoon with nearly 30 contests scheduled but please check with your school before heading out as there are bound to be some rescheduling early in the season with the ground still soggy from last week's snow.

Foxcroft School: Field Hockey and Tennis Both Advance to State Semifinals

(Nov. 7, 2012) - Foxcroft School's field hockey and tennis teams BOTH advanced to the semifinals of the Virginia Independent School Athletic Association Division II Tournament Tuesday with comfortable victories in their first-round matches. Neither team had won a state match in at least seven years.

Girls Tennis: Foxcroft's Kelly Buckland is School's Athlete of the Week

Middleburg (Sept. 27, 2012) - Junior Kelly Buckland, whose inspirational play has sparked Foxcroft School to two victories on the tennis court so far this season, has been named the school's Athlete of the Week for the period ending Sept. 22.

Buckland, a transfer from Saint Stephen’s Saint Agnes, is the team’s No. 3 singles player and teams with Amalia Simpson as the No. 1 doubles pairing. Kelly won her singles match and also was a winner in doubles when Foxcroft beat Wakefield on Sept. 21.

 “Kelly has shown a lot of determination and grit so far this season,” Coach Kate Barston said. “She made a comeback in our match against Highland (a 9-7 victory on Sept. 14) and continues to be a steady force for the Foxcroft team. Her consistent passion and willing to do whatever it takes is what puts her above her opponents.”

Cheers Sports and Viva Loudoun Athletes of the Month: March 2012

(June 13, 2012) - Earlier this month Cheers Sports and Viva Loudoun held a photo shoot for the 2012 Spring Sports Athletes of the Month. More than 100 of Loudoun's prep baseball, softball, soccer, lacrosse, tennis, and track and field athletes turned out to Cheers Sports in Ashburn for the shoot.

"With 12 high schools and such incredible success this spring from so many team it was our most difficult selection process since we starting doing the Athletes of the Month program in 2006," said Viva Loudoun editor Dan Sousa, who chose the athletes honored.

The athletes were split into three groups for individual and group photos. based upon both performances and athletes availability for the photo shoot. Released today is the March 2012 group. The April 2012 group will be released June 14 and the May 2012 group will be released June 15.
