Girls Basketball: Broad Run Runs Into Tough Wildcat Squad in Cougar Tip Off

(Nov. 30, 2012) - The Broad Run High School girls basketball team fell to 1-1 on the young season after running into a tough Wildcat squad from Centreville in the Cougar Tip Off at Oakton High School.

It was a 2-point game at the half before the Wildcats out-scored the Spartans 21-5 in the third quarter and then cruised to a 59-40 win. Broad Run freshman Mariah Leonard posted her first career double-double in just her second prep game with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Girls Basketball: Tuscarora Opens Season with Dulles District Win Over Leesburg Rival Heritage

(Nov. 30, 2012) - The Tuscarora High School girls basketball team opened its 2012-13 season with a 44-41 Dulles District win Thursday night over Leesburg rival Heritage.

The Huskies were led by sophomore Megan Leonard who had 15 points and four rebounds, including 5 of 9 shooting from 3-point range.

Also for Tuscarora, junior Zaria Comer scored nine points with four rebounds and junior Alysha Berry had eight points while dishing out five assists. Ashley Jennings led Tuscarora with eight rebounds and she had two steals.

(Nov. 30, 2012) - Fans attending the Washington Redskins’ Monday Night Football game against the New York Giants at FedExField on Dec. 3 are encouraged to arrive early to avoid traffic and allow ample time to get to their seats before the 8:30 p.m. kickoff.

The Redskins are committed to creating a safe and enjoyable experience for fans both inside FedExField and in the parking lots. In order for fans to avoid regular weekday commuter traffic, they are encouraged to take advantage of parking lots opening early at 4:30 p.m. and stadium gates opening early at 6:30 p.m.

News: Loudoun County Sheriff's Supports Annual Kids Program

(Nov. 30, 2012) - The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office will participate in the Loudoun-Dulles Fraternal Order of Police (F.O.P.) Lodge #69 14th Annual COPS & Kids Program this Saturday, Dec. 1. 

This year's Cops and Kids' Program will help bring the holidays to over 100 children and their families in our community. These children, who otherwise would not be able to enjoy all the holiday season has to offer, are selected by the Loudoun County School system based on their needs.

The meeting about Byrne's Ridge Park is scheduled for 7 p.m., Monday, Dec. 3, 2012, in the auditorium of Mercer Middle School, 42149 Greenstone Drive, Aldie. Wrestling: Tuscarora Opens Season with Double Dual; Hosts Tuscarora Duals Saturday

Leesburg (Nov. 30, 2012) - The Tuscarora High School wrestling team opened their season this week with a double dual on Wednesday. The AA Huskies lost to AAA teams Falls Church, 39-27, and JEB Stuart, 44-21.

Wrestlers who went undefeated for the night for Tuscarora: Sam Brazer (113), Alex McCord (120), Will Siryani (152), and Alejandro Avelar (170).

Tuscarora will host the Tuscarora Duals tournament on Saturday, Dec 1st. The event features 10 schools, six from Loudoun including the host Huskies, Broad Run, Dominion. Heritage, John Champe and Potomac Falls:

The Skinny: The 9th Annual Brown's Dulles Nissan Tip Off Classic concluded with two hotly contested games. In the first game, the Thomas Jefferson Colonials pulled away at the end to fend off a determined Brentsville Tigers team, 42-33. 

In the second game, the home team Titans defended their home court advantage and defeated the Marshall Statesmen, 46-44. It was another phenomenal second half performance by the Titans as they start their season 2-0.

Football: Loudoun Middle School Players with Shot at National Title

(Nov. 29, 2012) – 19 middle school football players from Loudoun have dreams of a national championship as they take the field for the Northern Virginia team in the Football University National Championship - the football version of the Little League World Series— which kicks off this weekend with over 20 games across the nation.

The local team faces Central Virginia on Sat. Dec. 1 at 6 p.m. at Woodrow Wilson High School in Washington, D.C. A win would advance the team to a second round game on Sunday, Dec. 2 at 6 p.m. against the winner of Saturday's Eastern North Carolina vs. Maryland match-up.

(November 29, 2012) — In its 28th year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company, in collaboration with USA TODAY High School Sports, today announced Jonathan Allen of Stone Bridge High School as its 2012-13 Gatorade Virginia Football Player of the Year.

Allen is the second Gatorade Virginia Football Player of the Year to be chosen from Stone Bridge High School with Ed Wang chosen in 2005 and the second straight player chosen from Loudoun with Briar Woods' Alex Carter (Stanford freshman) winning last year.

Girls Basketball: Heritage Nips Freedom, 32-30, to Open Season

(Nov. 29, 2012) - The Heritage High School girls basketball team made a steal late in the game with the score tied and Christina Smart made two free throws to give the Pride a 32-30 season-opening win at Freedom Wednesday.

Heritage was down against Freedom (1-1) pretty much the entire game and had one of their top scorers, Breana Smart, in foul trouble, but the Pride battled back in the fourth quarter.

Boys Basketball: Dominion Opens 2-0 with 44-40 Win Over TJ

(Nov. 29, 2012) - The Dominion High School boys basketball team beat Thomas Jefferson 44-40 on Wednesday to open the season with a perfect 2-0 mark at the 9th Annual Brown's Dulles Nisan Tip Off Classic. Junior Tony Richardson scored 13 points to lead the host Titans against TJ and was named the tournament's MVP.

Baseball: Heritage SR Lorenzo Calderon to Play Next Year for New Marymount University Program

Leesburg (Nov. 29, 2012) - Heritage High School senior centerfielder Lorenzo Calderon has committed to play next year at Marymount University in Arlington. It will be Marymount's first season as the school announced in August it was adding baseball for 2014.

“Marymount is thrilled to be fielding the first baseball team in its history,” university president Dr. Matthew Shank said. “We believe that baseball will provide another great option for student-athletes who want to receive an outstanding education and compete at the college level. As the president of Marymount and a former college baseball player, I can't wait for opening day in the spring of 2014!”

Calderon holds many of the Pride's baseball records. Calderon was named second team all-Cedar Run District in 2011 and first team all-Dulles District in 2012.

News: Case of Missing Ashburn Pregnant Woman Featured on Cable TV Show

(Nov. 29, 2012) - The investigation into the disappearance of a pregnant woman from Ashburn was featured this week on the Investigation Discovery series called Disappeared. Bethany Anne Decker has been missing since January 29, 2011 and has not been seen or heard from since.

Mrs. Decker was reported missing February 19th by her family and authorities have been trying to locate her ever since. Bethany Decker'€™s car was left behind in the parking lot of her apartment. It is known that Mrs. Decker did not leave the country. There has been no activity on her bank accounts, cell phones or e-mail. She was registered as a student at George Mason University, but has not attended any classes since this incident was reported.

(Nov. 29, 2012) - Flint Hill senior Haley McClure, an Ashburn native who previously played at Stone Bridge High School, has committed to play volleyball next year at NCAA Division I Morgan State according to her Northern Virginia Volleyball Association club team.

(Nov. 29, 2012) - Heritage High School senior Dariel Montanez will play volleyball next year at NCAA Division II Edinboro University in Pennsylvania. Montanez had 130 kills and 206 digs this fall for the Pride.

The Fighting Scots program play in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference where they went 7-12 this fall with an overall mark of 11-22. The team is coached by Missy Soboleski.

Boys Lacrosse: Park View Picks Pro Matthew Casey to Take Over Program

Sterling (Nov. 28, 2012) - Matthew Casey has been named the new varsity boys lacrosse coach at Park View High School.

Casey is in his first year at Sterling Middle School as a special education teacher and Patriot athletic director Jason Testerman said that Casey "is excited to make his mark in the Sterling Cluster Schools."

The new coach is a graduate of Ithaca College, where he was an All-American lacrosse player and standout performer. After his collegiate career, Matthew was drafted as the 21st overall pick in the Major League Lacrosse Expansion Draft by the Los Angeles Riptide in 2007, where he collected 14 goals, 3 assists, and 44 groundballs as a rookie.

Football: Advance Tickets on Sale for Stone Bridge State Semifinal at Hanover

(Nov. 27, 2012) - Advance tickets are on sale Wednesday and Thursday at Stone Bridge High School during lunch shifts (12:13 to 2:13 p.m.) for the Bulldogs Division 5 state semifinal football game scheduled for  4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1 at Hanover High School in Mechanicsville.

Ticket price is $10.00. Children under 6 may be admitted free if accompanied by a paying adult. Senior citizens do not get in free per Virginia High School League (VHSL) policy. Hanover’s stadium seats 4,000 and they have plenty of parking. 

Stone Bridge also has 25 seats available on the cheer charter bus for $15 each.  Gates open at 2:15 p.m. on Saturday.

Basketball: 9th Annual Brown's Dulles Nissan Tip Off Classic Gets Season Going

Sterling (Nov. 27, 2012) - The 9th Annual Brown's Dulles Nissan Tip Off Classic kicked off Monday night at Dominion High School to get the high school basketball season underway.

In boys action, Woodbridge nipped Thomas Jefferson, 43-39, and then the host Titans beat Brentsville, 75-33, in the second game.

Tonight, the girls take to the court with Marshall playing Brentsville at 6 p.m. followed by Dominion vs. Thomas Jefferson at 8 p.m.

The boys return for a doubleheader Wednesday (Woodbridge vs. Brentsville, 6 p.m.; Thomas Jefferson vs. Dominion, 8 p.m.) and then the tournament finishes with a girls doubleheader Thursday (Thomas Jefferson vs. Brentsville, 6 p.m.; Marshall vs. Dominion, 8 p.m.).

Purcellville (Nov. 27, 2012) - Woodgrove High School senior Centerfielder Ashley Cole signed her National Letter of Intent to accept a scholarship to play softball at Lehigh University on National Early Signing Day.

Cole is a two-time 1st team All-State, All-Region II, and All-Dulles District selection. She was also a 1st team All-Met and 1st team MaxPreps All-American choice this past season and carries a 4.28 GPA.

Cross Country: Loudoun County SR Patrick Joseph Logs Historic Run at Footlocker

(Nov. 25, 2012) - Loudoun County High School senior Patrick Joseph may have ran into the record books at the Footlocker South Regional Saturday in Charlotte, N.C. as he posted a 15:11 time thought to be the fastest time ever recorded by a Loudoun runner, according to MileStat records.

"Patrick's time of 15:11 is the fastest time ever recorded by a runner from any school in Loudoun County," said Loudoun County coach Courtney Campbell. "Breaking 16:00 is a huge goal for most all high school runners. There have only been two runners in Loudoun County High School history to break 16:00. There have only been seven in all of the Loudoun schools ever (to break 16:00)."

Leesburg (Nov. 25, 2012) - The Leesburg Christian School (LCS) Lady Lions varsity volleyball team captured the program's first ever ODACS (Old Dominion Association of Christian Schools) state title recently and finished with a school-record 24-1 overall record, including 14-1 in conference. The squad then went on to finish sixth at a national tournament.

News: Sanders Corner Principal Kathleen Hwang Struck by SUV and Killed While Walking Near Her Sterling Home

(Nov. 23, 2012) - Sanders Corner Elementary School Principal Kathleen M. Hwang, 60, was struck and killed while walking near her Lowes Island neighborhood in Sterling Wednesday afternoon. Loudoun County Public Schools Crisis Resource team members will be on duty at Sanders Corner when the Ashburn school re-opens on Monday morning.

LCPS release: "This is a sad time in the life of this vibrant school, and we are grateful for the years of outstanding leadership given to Sanders Corner by Mrs. Hwang since 2005."

Families of students and former students are leaving flowers, teddy bears, balloons and other  sympathy items in a makeshift memorial in front of the school's message board which happens to read: "Have a Safe and Happy Thanksgiving".

The popular principal, a presence greeting her students each morning in the school's car line, many with hugs, and also made sure to read with each student in the school, who would return home proudly with their "I read to the Principal" button.

Hwang was scheduled to retire at the end of this school year. Before moving to Northern Virginia she had spent 24 years in the Virginia Beach area as a teacher, assistant principal and principal.

A visitation will be held at Adams-Green Funeral Home in Herndon on Tuesday, Nov. 27 from 5 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions can be made to the Chesterbrook Elementary School PTA in McLean or the Sanders Corner Elementary School PTA in Ashburn.

Football: Stone Bridge Storms Back for 69-50 Win Over Yorktown to Claim 8th Regional Title

Ashburn (Nov. 24, 2012) - Stone Bridge High School football coach Mickey Thompson was asked over and over again after Friday's Northern Region Division 5 title game if he was worried his Bulldogs had fallen too far behind Yorktown in the match-up of unbeaten teams.

When it was 16-7 Yorktown after the second Stone Bridge first half turnover? Nope

When it was 23-7 Yorktown after the third Stone Bridge first half turnover? Nope

Surely, when it was 29-7 Yorktown with 9:30 still to play in the first half and Stone Bridge having committed four turnovers!?!

Ah, again, Nope.

Thompson did wonder when his team was going to start showing their true colors in front of the sunshine-lit late November crowd.

"I wondered how many more times could we fumble ... it was a mess," said Thompson, who wasn't worried because he knew exactly how many points his team, which dominated both lines of the scrimmage, could put up on the Patriots.

"If they put up 60, we are going to lose," said Thompson.

And as usual, as the saying in Ashburn goes, "Mickey knows football" and the Bulldogs didn't just snap out of their slumber but went on a roll for the ages, scoring 55 unanswered points including a 33-point Arena-football like third quarter blitz to beat Yorktown, 69-50.

Stone Bridge (13-0), which has now won six Northern Region titles since 2005 and eight regional titles since 2002, will travel to Hanover (9-3) on Saturday, Dec. 1 in the Division 5 state semifinals. Lake Taylor, which destroyed 4-time defending state champion Phoebus, 44-0, is at North Stafford in the other semifinal.

The Skinny: 3-point shooting and boxing out on rebounds was key for Bulldogs in win ... psych! Stone Bridge fell behind 29-7 early in this game and then scored 55 unanswered points including a 33-point barrage in the third quarter. The final score is actually mislead as the Bulldog starters exited with a 62-29 lead in the fourth quarter. Stone Bridge's Rassaun Goldring scored on an 87-yard kickoff return, 41-yard punt return and had a 42-yard interception return to set up a TD. SB's Sterling Dailey had 3 short TD runs and D'Ante Yarborough had TD catches of 20 and 90 yards and a 40-yard TD run. Ryan Burns went 5 of 7 passing for 174 yards and set the school's record for passing yards in a season with 2,365, besting the previous mark of Patrick Thompson (2,337 set in 2007).

The Skinny: Perhaps one of the bigger upsets in Northern Region football history. Kyle Downer scores three TDs and gains 172 yards rushing in Cougars win.

(Nov. 24, 2012) - Briar Woods High School junior linebacker Chris Larco had a firm grasp on the Region II Division 4 championship trophy Friday night and wasn't about to let go.

"We have depth. We all play with heart. We all play tough," said Larco. "This is amazing. This is the best sport. This is the best thing in the world ... these guys are my family, they are my brothers."

Larco and the Falcons defense shut out Loudoun County for the second time in a month, and junior quarterback Trace McSorley had a big game on both sides of the ball as undefeated Briar Woods (13-0) beat the Raiders, 31-0, to earn a third consecutive regional title.

The Falcons, on a state best 27-game winning streak, will host the Courtland vs. Smithfield winner next Saturday in the VHSL state semifinals.

Football: Loudoun County Gets Shot at First Ever Regional Title Tonight after Win at Tuscarora

(Nov. 23, 2012) - The Loudoun County High School football team has never won a regional championship but the Raiders have a shot tonight when they travel to 2-time defending state champion Briar Woods at 7 p.m. It will be the Raiders first regional title appearance since 1996.

Loudoun County (10-2) earned the chance after knocking off rival Tuscarora, 30-21, last Friday in the semifinals. The Raiders had lost to the Huskies, 21-7, in the regular season but it was the Raiders shocking the home Tuscarora crowd with 20 first quarter points.

Tuscarora fought back in the entertaining game that wasn't decided until Loudoun County added a late Jose Andrade 21-yard field goal with just under five minutes left and then Mike Anderson made his second big interception of the game with 1:23 remaining.

Football: Briar Woods Wins 26th Straight Game

(Nov. 23, 2012) - For the Briar Woods High School football team a third straight VHSL Division 4 state title simply won't come easy.

In the opening week of the playoffs the Falcons watched University of South Carolina recruit LB/TE Matt Rolin exit with a knee injury and Briar Woods needed a touchdown in the dying seconds of the first half to avoid trailing Powhatan at the break before rolling to a 34-7 win.

Last Friday, with Rolin confined to the press box, the Falcons trailed Liberty 7-0 at the start and were nursing a 7-point lead just before half when speedy sophomore Brandon Polk busted loose for an 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown that ignited Briar Woods to a 42-14 win.

Briar Woods (12-0) has now won 26 straight games, the longest winning streak in the state, and the Falcons host Dulles District foe Loudoun County (10-2) tonight at 7 p.m. in the Region II title game.

Ashburn (Nov. 22, 2012) – Last year the Stone Bridge High School football team had a rare Thanksgiving off after an earlier than expected exit from the playoffs but the Bulldogs were back to working out on Turkey Day after a 33-14 win over a tough Langley squad in the Northern Region Division 5 semifinals on Nov. 16.

Bulldog junior Sterling Dailey had a career-high 192 yards rushing on 28 carries and two TD runs as Stone Bridge (12-0 record) advanced to their 10th regional final in 11 seasons.

Sterling (Nov. 20, 2012) - The Dominion High School Athletic Department announced Tuesday that senior softball standout Tory Wright has committed to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. 

The first-team All Region and first-team All District performer selected the Spartans to continue her athletic and academic career next year. She has lettered in softball since her freshmen year and has earned Academic Letters all four years while attending Dominion.

Leesburg (Nov. 20, 2012) - Heritage High School varsity football coach Steve Williams has announced that he will not be returning next season.

Williams has served as the Pride's varsity head coach for four years, with the previous five seasons as an assistant. His overall record is 12-29 including 7-4 in 2011 when the program made its first ever Region II playoff appearance.

Ashburn (Nov. 20, 2012) - Broad Run High School senior McKall Miller officially signed her letter of intent Monday afternoon to play softball next year at NCAA Division I Providence College.

"I am extremely excited to be heading to Providence College in 2013," Miller said. "Playing for coaches Jacklets and Morgenstein in the Big East will be challenging and exciting!"

The 5-foot-8 right-hander helped the Spartans her junior season make a run all the way to the VHSL AAA state semifinals. Miller was named first team all-state outfield for her efforts. She plays her club ball with the Vienna Stars 18U Gold.

College Corner: Potomac Falls Grad Tarrell Owens Named 1st Team DB for D3 Ferrum College

(Nov. 20, 2012) - Potomac Falls High School grad Tarrell Owens has made first team USA South for defensive backs at NCAA Division III Ferrum College.

Owens tied the school record for single-game interceptions with three Oct. 13 at home against North Carolina Wesleyan College. Owens picked off two more passes Oct. 27 at Greensboro College, one of which he returned 98 yards for a touchdown. His seven total interceptions this season finished tied for third nationally among the NCAA Division III ranks, and tied for seventh nationally with 0.70 interceptions per game.

I personally consider myself a Redskins fan but don't watch all that much and don't really know all the players positions except for RG3 and Cooley.  But I do know they put their bodies on the line every day for every PLAY.  My husband's friend ex- Eagle/Redskin Troy Drake once described each hit as getting into a car accident. So my hats off to all of those football players and the hits they take. Way to go Tarrell and keep up the great work.

Football: Freedom Coach Mick Mullins Steps Down After 4 Seasons

(Nov. 19, 2012) - Freedom (South Riding) head football coach, Mick Mullins, announced to his team today that he will not be returning to coach the team in 2013.

Freedom athletic department said in a release that "Mullins served the Freedom football with great passion, energy, and commitment for the 2009-2012 seasons. He also taught Freedom athletes to serve our community, most notably working as integral participants in the Champions Football League for special needs students."

Gymnastics: Broad Run SR Madison O'Braitis will Compete Next Year for SUNY Brockport

(Nov. 19, 2012) - Broad Run High School senior Madison O'Braitis has accepted an offer to compete next year for SUNY Brockport's NCAA Division III D3women's gymnastics team.

The Golden Eagles won the 2012 National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) National Championship for the first time in program history last season. Coach John Feeney was named NCGA Coach of the Year last season.

O'Braitis has trained at APEX Gymnastics for 10 years and last year finished 4th at the National Championships.

News: Heritage High School Varsity Club Hosts Holiday Helper

(Nov. 19, 2012) - The Heritage High School Varsity Club will hold their annual Holiday Helper event for children in grades K-5 on Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012. Parents can enjoy a day out from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.while their children participate in a variety of activities including crafts, games, lunch, and a movie with the Pride.

Money that is raised goes to an area family in need. Cost is $25 for one child and $20 for each additional child. That works out to less than $4.17 per hour! Space is limited. Younger children can be signed up as long as they are potty trained.

Girls Volleyball: One for the Thumb! Loudoun County Rallies for 5th AA State Title in Six Years

Richmond (Nov. 19, 2012) - The Loudoun County High School girls volleyball team started out fast Saturday in the VHSL AA state title match at VCU, but then found themselves down 2-1 to Hidden Valley, and trailing big in the 4th set, 16-10. 

With their dream of a state championship fading away, the Raiders charged back to win the 4th and 5th sets to take the match 25-22, 20-25, 21-25, 25-21, 15-11. The Raiders rally brought home the program's 5th championship in six years, and ties the VHSL record of most girls volleyball titles with Cave Spring at five. 

Loudoun County won their 18th consecutive match and finished their season at 28-1 on the season. 

Softball: Woodgrove Senior Mackenzie Moler Signs to Play at South Carolina

Purcellville (Nov. 19, 2012) - Woodgrove High School speedy senior outfielder Mackenzie Moler, who helped the Wolverines win the VHSL AA state title in the spring, has signed her letter of intent to play softball next year at NCAA Division I University of South Carolina.

The left-handed slap hitter hit .408 in the regular season as a junior and then .435 in the postseason as the Wolverines hoisted the Dulles District, Region II and AA titles. In the last two seasons, Moler has swiped 43 bases. She plans on a pre-med track at USC.

"I am really excited about competing at the D1 level in the SEC, one of the most competitive conferences in the nation," Moler told the Loudoun Times-Mirror after her verbal commitment. Read more here.

USC softball coach Beverly Smith also received letters of intent from Nickie Blue (P/1B, Longmont, Colo.), Kaylea Snaer (C/1B Rowland Heights, Calif.), Macey Webb (1B/C Stanfield, N.C.), Taylor Williams (3B, Flatonia, Tex.) and Victoria Williams (1B/3B/C, Williamston, S.C.).

"This is a very talented group of softball players," said Smith.

Football: Potomac Falls Coach Mike Gims Steps Down After 3 Seasons

(Nov. 19, 2012) - Potomac Falls High School varsity football coach Mike Gims has stepped down after three seasons. Gims' teams went 1-9 in 2010, 2-8 last year and 4-6 this season for an overall mark of 7-23.

The vacancy is posted on the Loudoun County Public Schools website with resumes being accepted through Dec. 14.

(Nov. 15, 2012) - Stone Bridge High School had its season end Thursday in a 5-set loss to Atlee (23-25, 25-19, 25-12, 16-25, 15-13)in the VHSL AAA girls volleyball state semifinals at VCU in Richmond. Stone Bridge ends the year at 27-3.

(Nov. 14, 2012) - Four Loudoun athletes will take the field this Saturday -- three as key defensive players and one as an offensive starter -- in the NCAA Division II playoffs when Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) hosts Shepherd University.

Suiting up for IUP will be linebackers Joe Walter (Broad Run High School/Ashburn) and Alex Berdahl (Bishop O'Connell/Ashburn) and offensive right guard Mike Charmo (Loudoun Valley/Hamilton), and for Shepherd will be defensive linemen Robert Hayes (Park View/Sterling).
