(Nov. 29, 2012) - Peggy Gearhart, a seventh grade language arts teacher at Eagle Ridge Middle School, was named the recipient of the Foster B. Gresham Award at the annual conference of the Virginia Association of Teachers of English (VATE) on Oct. 26th in Richmond.
The Gresham Award was established to recognize a teacher who is both an inspiration and an innovator in the classroom, as well as one who has shown exemplary service to VATE. The award is the equivalent of being named VATE’s Teacher of the Year.
Gearhart was recognized for constantly challenging her students and providing them with a variety of enriching learning experiences. She is regarded by her peers, as one colleague has written, as “a rock of support to the grade level content team members through her strong leadership as a veteran teacher and through her passion and devotion to the language arts curriculum.”
She has served VATE as a member of its executive board in various capacities through the years. She currently serves as the organization’s treasurer and conference registration chair.
Gearhart is the English Department’s subject area lead teacher (SALT) at Eagle Ridge. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Purdue University and a master’s degree in education from Marymount University. Gearhart also has earned a professional studies certificate as a reading specialist through Shenandoah University and is a member of the National Council of Teachers of English.
Editor's note: I am very lucky to have had Peggy Gearhart teach one of my son's when she was at Sanders Corner Elementary School. She is truly a wonderful teacher and great asset to LCPS.
