High School Sports Year in Review: Fall 2012 - A Time for Champions!

This is the first of a 3-part series by Viva Loudoun looking at the 2012-13 high school sports season:

(June 30, 2013) - How good were the athletic programs in Loudoun last year?

Considered that the undefeated Briar Woods football team claimed its third straight VHSL Division 4 state championship … and the Falcons couldn’t even claim bragging rights on their own campus as that honor went to the school’s competitive cheer team which brought home its fourth straight state title.

And as good as the Falcons were in the fall, the Loudoun County girls volleyball team boasted a better dynasty argument as the Raiders tied a state record with their fifth AA state title in six years.

In the spring Loudoun continued its hold on AA girls soccer in the state as Woodgrove won its second straight state championship beating local rival Briar Woods in the finals at Radford. It was the third time in four years that the AA girls soccer state finals featured two Loudoun schools.

How good is girls soccer in the area? Since the AA girls soccer state tournament started in 1999, Loudoun teams have won 11 titles and made 16 state finals appearances.

It wasn’t just a banner school year again for Loudoun teams but 2012-13 was perhaps the greatest year ever for individual performances, highlighted by two local athletes being named Gatorade Players of the Year for the state of Virginia – Stone Bridge senior defensive lineman Jon Allen (Alabama recruit) for football and Woodgrove senior defender/midfielder Brittany Basinger (Penn State recruit) for girls soccer.

While it is an incredible honor to be named the best at your sport for a given year, Loudoun County Patrick Joseph left no doubt after an amazing senior season that he is the greatest prep runner in Loudoun history.

Joseph’s claim to fame included turning the fastest ever record 5K time by a Loudoun high school runner, clocking 15:11 at the Footlocker South Regional in Charlotte in the fall. He finished second in the AA state meet with a 15:40.

Just getting warmed-up, Joseph (Virginia Tech recruit) ran the fastest mile in Loudoun high school history with a 4:07.38 at the Penn Relays in the spring and he finished off his prep career by winning the 800 and 1600 AA state titles.

JoAnn Pearson is reflecting on her retirement from Broad Run High School after 44 years.

“Nobody here will have the memories from all these years. Nobody will know who Mr. McBride was or who Wayne Griffith was. They’ll look at those pictures in the library and say ‘Who were those old men?’ There will be nobody here who has the history. That’s what’s hard about it… I know it happens at other schools, but I think we have a whole lot more history than other schools.” (In case you were wondering, Jim McBride was Broad Run’s original principal and Griffith was its second.)

Pearson wasn’t there the day Broad Run opened in 1969, but came on board at the beginning of second semester as a replacement for Betty Hatrick (the wife of now-Superintendent Edgar B. Hatrick III.) Pearson was coming home from two years in Germany where her husband, Sonny, was stationed with the Army. (She was teaching GED classes there for the University of Maryland.)

Boys Basketball: Lucketts A.J. Metz Accepts Preferred Walk-on Role at Maryland

(June 29, 2013) - Lucketts native A.J. Metz, who recently graduated from the Bullis School has signed as a preferred walk-on with the University of Maryland men's basketball program.

Metz, with a 3.85 GPA, wants to become an orthopedic surgeon. He was a charter member of the original Loudoun Triple Threat travel basketball team which started the LTT AAU basketball program team. Metz played all seven years for LTT.

Girls Lacrosse: Freedom Rising JR Amber Harlow Playing in 2013 Brine National Lacrosse Classic

(June 29, 2013) - Amber Harlow, daughter of Chris and Doris Harlow, a rising Junior at Freedom High School (South Riding) has been named as a 2013 Brine National High School All-American and has been selected to represent the Washington DC Region at the 2013 Brine National Lacrosse Classic to be held in Boyds, Maryland June 30-July 3, 2013.

News: Soccerfest 2013 Features Former D.C. United Stars at Morven Park in Leesburg

Baseball: Diamond Elite 15U Wins Morgantown Marathon

(June 28, 2013) - The Diamond Elite 15U Baseball team -- featuring 11 plays from local high schools -- had a great weekend of baseball June 22-23 winning the Morgantown Marathon in West Virginia. The event is run by Triple Crown Sports.

DE won pool games against the Harrison County Allstars from WV 12-1 and 2nd game they beat the Murrysville Marauders from PA 10-0. Sunday championship rounds DE beat the Mason Dixon Ruffnecks from PA 8-0. In the Semifinal matchup against the powerful Beaver Valley Red, DE won 1-0. DE went on to beat the South Central PA Tigers 5-4 in the Championship earning their spot in the Summer National Championships for Triple Crown Sports in late July.

Boys Basketball: Loudoun FLEXX All Stars 13U Premier Team Headed to National Championships in North Carolina

(June 28, 2013) - Loudoun FLEXX All Stars 13U Premier boys basketball team has qualified for a national championship tournament in North Carolina this summer as the Virginia North representative.

The team is ranked No. 1 (in Division 1, Virginia North) with the American Youth Basketball Association (AYBA) after winning the state championships at the end of May. Going into the state championships as the No. 1 seed, they preserved their ranking against some tough competition (Virginia Terriers and the BTH Bulldawgs).

News: Loudoun County Sheriff's Investigates Death of Ashburn Female on House Arrest

(June 28, 2013) - An Ashburn, Virginia, woman on a court ordered home incarceration was found unconscious in her home and later passed away on June 24.

Sarena L. Carroll, 24, was sentenced on larceny charges and ordered by the courts to serve an at home incarceration. On Monday, a Sheriff’s Office Correctional Deputy was performing a residential visit at Carroll’s home located in the 44200 block of Big Trail Terrace. The deputy made several attempts to contact Carroll by knocking on her door and via the telephone.

News: Loudoun County Sheriff's Plans Sobriety Checkpoint for Friday, June 28

(June 28, 2013) - The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office will conduct a sobriety checkpoint on Friday, June 28th.

“Our goal is to ensure the roads are safe for all motorists,” said Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman. “The checkpoints are designed to discourage impaired driving and we are asking drivers to make the smart choice, don’t drink and drive.

Members of the Sheriff’s Office Auxiliary Unit and volunteers from the Loudoun Chapter of MADD will assist with the checkpoint.

News: Loudoun County Public Schools Superintendent Hatrick to Step Down After Coming School Year; Read Full Text of Retirement Announcement

(June 27, 2013) - Loudoun County Public School Edgar B. Hatrick III announced earlier this month he would retire at the end of the 2013-14 school year. He has been the school district's leader since 1991 and a graduate of Loudoun County High School, he has been working in the school system since 1967.

When Hatrick helped open Broad Run High School in 1969 there was just 9,525 students total in the entire school system and that number had only increased to 15,118 by the time he took over as superintendent in 1991. News: Potomac Falls Recent Grad Patricia Mook Receives $10K Sullivan Award Scholarship

(June 26, 2013) - Potomac Falls High School recent grad Patricia Mook is one of two applicants out of 2,300 nationwide to receive a $10,000 AAU High School Sullivan Award scholarship.

It was announced June 14 that Mook -- who played varsity basketball and volleyball at Potomac Falls for four years and ran track this spring -- and Josh Stamp received the top awards of $10,000 each. Mook will use her scholarship at Emory University where she will play basketball.

Football: Dominion Assistant Coach Gets Invite to Elite QB Competition

(June 26, 2013) - Dominion High School football offensive coordinator Paul Troth has been invited to coach in the Elite 11 Quarterback in Beaverton, Ore., June 28-July 3. Troth will be coaching the top 18 quarterbacks from around the nation while they compete in the made-for-TV event, led by ESPN’s Trent Dilfer.

The Staunton Braves came into the contest in first place in the Southern Division, nationally ranked, and widely recognized as the strongest team in the Valley Baseball League. That didn't stop the Senators though as they knocked off the Braves, 10-2, behind an extremely strong offensive night from Travis Ferrick (5-6), and great pitching by Wofford College standout Luke Leftwich.

Football: Stone Bridge Rising SR Lineman Nate Davis Commits to UNC-Charlotte

(June 21, 2013) - Stone Bridge High School rising senior offensive lineman Nate Davis has committed verbally to play football at UNC-Charlotte according to Bulldog coach Mickey Thompson.

The 6-foot-3, 285-pound tackle, according to Thompson, has the ability to be the best OL to ever come out of Stone Bridge, which is high praise considering Thompson's tenure as the Ashburn school has included such linemen as current Philadelphia Eagle and Virginia Tech standout Ed Wang.

Thompson calls the 2013 offensive line for the Bulldogs one of the deepest groups since the school opened in 2000 with all-state rising senior center Connor Smith flanked by a set of guards and tackles that should average almost 290 pounds.

Recruiting has also been heating up for the other linemen such as rising seniors Nick Sobhani and Mike Hickey.

Football: Cardinal Connection? Briar Woods Speedy Polk Gets Stanford Offer

(June 21, 2013) - Briar Woods High School speedy rising junior Brandon Polk picked up an offer from Stanford a week ago. Former Briar Woods star Alex Carter made an impact on the West Coast this past season as a true freshman.

Polk, who won the 100 and 200 meters AA state titles earlier this month, also has offers from Maryland, ODU, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest.

Boys Basketball: James Wood Coach Al Smith Takes Over Tuscarora Program

(June 21, 2013) - Quietly a month ago, Al Smith stepped down as the boys basketball coach at James Wood High School in Winchester to take over the Tuscarora program in Leesburg.

After the move was approved at the May 14 Loudoun County school board meeting, a release was issued by the Frederick County Public Schools:

James Wood High School boys’ basketball and golf coach Al Smith has resigned in order to teach at Tuscarora High School in Loudoun County and to coach that school’s boys’ basketball team. The Loudoun County School Board approved Smith’s hiring during its meeting yesterday.

Smith says, “I would like to thank Principal Joe Salyer, Coordinator of Student Activities Craig Wosher and the entire James Wood High School administrative team for providing me with the opportunity to teach and coach at James Wood. They have provided unwavering support during my five-year tenure as boys’ basketball coach and my seven years as the coach of the golf team.” Smith adds, “I believe I’m leaving both the basketball and golf programs in positions of strength and I think both teams will have the opportunity to compete for Northwestern District championships next season. I’m leaving James Wood with many great memories, but am looking forward to the new challenges and opportunities that await me as a teacher and coach at Tuscarora High School.”

Girls Volleyball: Meghan Puckli Takes Reigns of Tuscarora Program

(June 21, 2013) - Meghan Puckli, a former Loudoun County High School and Christopher Newport University girls volleyball standout, has taken the reigns of the Tuscarora program. Puckli  had been an assistant in the Huskies program under Marsha Hermes who left in the offseason to take over at Briar Woods.

In other coaching news from the May 28 school board meeting, Tuscarora promoted Libby Messina from assistant gymnastics coach to head coach.

News: Coaching Changes from June 11 School Board Meeting Include 4 New Head Coaches

(June 21, 2013) - Briar Woods High School's competitive cheer coach Kristin Develli, who in 2012 led the Falcons to their four consecutive straight AA state titles, will not be at the helm in the fall as former Dominion coach Lucia Curry was approved as the new Briar Woods varsity head coach at the June 11 school board meeting.

Other new varsity coaches according to the board docs:

• Juliet Kenny will be John Champe's head gymnastics coach in the winter. She was an assistant in the Knights first year under Hope Spivey.
• Sema Knonur is Heritage High School's new varsity cheer coach

Cheers Sports and Viva Loudoun 2013 Spring Sports "Fan Favorites"

(June 21, 2013) - For the first time this year Cheers Sports and Viva Loudoun teamed up to pick an All Loudoun team for every varsity sport played in the 13 public high schools in Loudoun County. The competition was fierce to make the teams so we wanted the fans input to honor those athletes that just missed the All Loudoun cut or those that showed team spirit and hard work that often gets overlooked when it comes to honors.

Cheers Sports and Viva Loudoun 2012-13 Winter Sports "Fan Favorites"

(June 20, 2013) - For the first time this year Cheers Sports and Viva Loudoun teamed up to pick an All Loudoun team for every varsity sport played in the 13 public high schools in Loudoun County. The competition was fierce to make the teams so we wanted the fans input to honor those athletes that just missed the All Loudoun cut or those that showed team spirit and hard work that often gets overlooked when it comes to honors.

After voting that saw more than 300 nominations, here are the "Fan Favorites" for Winter 2012-13. Athletes selected will be invited to a photo shoot this Sunday, June 23 at 12:30 p.m. at Replay Sports in Ashburn. RSVP and full details here.

She was always a very positive role model and showed that not even winning is more important than good sportsmanship and a good attitude. She even took a huge spill off the beam at one meet and finished the routine with a huge smile on her face, while most people would have given up. The team picked her as one of the captains, so they obviously see her as a leader and value her opinion ... She should be chosen as a fan favorite because of her determination and ability to motivate and pick people p when they might have had an off day ... I've been on Brooke's club gymnastics team for five years and she was almost always one of the reasons I came to practice. She always had a really positive attitude and never failed to cheer you up. Brooke is one of those people that makes you believe that you can do it no matter what. Her favorite saying was 'you're not going to die. And if you do, you'll never have to do it again' ... I went to the Districts meet and thought Brooke gave an amazing performance. She stood out as a great leader and captain with a positive attitude, cheering on all her teammates during the meet and posing as a wonderful role model .. She is a great leader and consistent performer and all around just a great person! ... She is very positive and a hard working leader. She is always there to encourage you and help you. She has been a role model for our team ... I did competitive gymnastics with Brooke and she is an amazing teammate and a very talented gymnast. She is so encouraging and always pushed me to do my best! ... She was very helpful, enthusiastic and a great teammate ... As captain she has led her team in events and brought out the fun and excitement of gymnastics in practices and competitions. News: Downtown Leesburg Street Improvements Begin Construction in July

(June 17, 2013) - After July 4, 2013, construction will begin on street improvements to Loudoun Street, between South King Street and Church Street, in downtown Leesburg. This project begins Phase 2 of the Downtown Improvement Project. Phase 1 included improvements to the alley and pedestrian walkways between the Town Hall Parking Garage and South King Street, and a new gateway to the historic district at Mom’s Apple Pie.

Washington Redskins: Robert Griffin III Teams Up with USAA to Support Military Community

San Antonio (June 17, 2013) USAA announced that Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III will support their military appreciation efforts this year. This agreement supports USAA’s Official Military Appreciation Sponsorship of the NFL and the Washington Redskins. The 2012 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year was born on a U.S. military base and grew up in military communities across the country as his parents served in the U.S. Army.
