Football: Cardinal Connection? Briar Woods Speedy Polk Gets Stanford Offer

(June 21, 2013) - Briar Woods High School speedy rising junior Brandon Polk picked up an offer from Stanford a week ago. Former Briar Woods star Alex Carter made an impact on the West Coast this past season as a true freshman.

Polk, who won the 100 and 200 meters AA state titles earlier this month, also has offers from Maryland, ODU, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest.

Ashburn (Feb. 11, 2013) -It was a big college football signing day for Stone Bridge High School on Feb. 6 as four Bulldogs made their college choices official including the BCS-bound full scholarships for defensive end Jonathan Allen (Alabama) and quarterback Ryan Burns (Stanford).

In addition, defensive linemen Drew Dettra will walk onto NCAA Division I Coastal Carolina and defensive back Christian Strahin has a half scholarship to NCAA Division II Shepherd University.

(Feb. 5, 2013) - Stone Bridge High School will hold a college signing ceremony Wednesday for two of the most decorated players in Bulldogs history as defensive end Jonathan Allen signs with two-time defending national champion Alabama and quarterback Ryan Burns signs with Stanford.

The dynamic duo will sign their National Letters of Intent in the school's cafeteria at 4 p.m.

Ashburn (Nov. 12, 2012) – Stone Bridge High School defensive end Jonathan Allen (Alabama recruit) and quarterback Ryan Burns (Stanford recruit) have been selected to play in the 2013 U.S. Army All-American Bowl, joining an elite group of All-Americans. Allen and Burns received their jerseys in a ceremony at the school on Nov. 2. (see photo gallery).

Those selected will play in the game on Saturday, January 5, 2013, at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. The annual East vs. West match-up will be televised live on NBC at 1:00 p.m. EST and will feature the nation’s top 90 high school football players.

(Feb. 15, 2012) - Briar Woods High School celebrated last week the college signing of senior football standout Alex Carter with Stanford University. Carter, a defensive back, wing back and kick returner, led the Falcons to back-to-back VHSL Division 4 state football title.s

Carter, who was named the Gatorade Virginia State Player of the year and was tabbed a Parade All-American, officially signed the week before while in San Antonio for the International Bowl all-star game. He also played in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl earlier this year.

Football: Stanford Joins Growing List of Teams Offering Stone Bridge QB Burns

(June 25, 2011) - Stone Bridge High School rising junior Ryan Burns has picked up another offer as Stanford has verbally offered the talented rising junior after he attended their camp. Earlier Burns picked up an offer from University of Virginia coach Mike London after participating in their 7x7 camp over the weekend.

Before his sophomore year, he picked up an offer from Boston College. He has been named as one of the "35 to Watch For in 2013" by the 2011 Sporting News College Football Magazine. Burns is one of six quarterbacks listed in the nationwide list.

Ashburn (Apr. 5, 2011) - Briar Woods High School junior Alex Carter visited made his third visit to Stanford University over the weekend for the Cardinal Junior day and decided that he wanted to play for the West Coach school and made a verbal commitment.

Carter, son of former Washington Redskins defensive back Tom Carter, already had offers from a handful of NCAA Division I schools, including his father's alma mater Notre Dame.

The big play wide receiver/defensive back helped Briar Woods capture the school's first ever state title in December.

Football: Briar Woods Big Playmaker Junior Alex Carter Drawing College Interest with Six Verbal Offers

Carter makes leaping grab in state title win

(Feb. 24, 2011) - Briar Woods High School big playmaker Alex Carter, a junior WR/DB that helped the Falcons to the school's first ever state football title in December, is drawing bigtime interest from NCAA Division I schools with six verbal offers already from Virginia, Virginia Tech, Boston College, Stanford, Duke and Kansas State.

Falcon coach Charlie Pierce says that Tennessee and Notre Dame are close to making their offers soon.

"Alex has a lot to offer to these programs on offense, defense or special teams," said Pierce.

Carter, son of former Washington Redskins defensive back Tom Carter, led Briar Woods in all-purpose yards and in total receptions with 48 for an average of 15.8 yards per catch.

Averaging 4.6 yards per rush, Carter was electrifying on returns, averaging 38.5 yards per kickoff return and scoring two touchdowns including a school-reocrd 98-yarder. He finished second on the team with 11 total touchdowns.

On defense, he had 50 total tackles with two interceptions and 10 pass break ups.

"The one thing that really stands out with his play is his ability to come up with big plays when the team needed it," said Pierce.

Those big plays in the playoffs included a 65-yard field-reversing catch-and-run TD against Liberty in the regional playoffs that was the game's only score and a leaping grab that he turned into a 77-yard touchdown in the state title game against Harrisonburg. That catch from freshman quarterback Trace McSorley came with Briar Woods trailing and turned the game around as the Falcons went on to win 41-21. On the defensive side of the ball he had an interception return of 38 yards for a score in the state semifinals.

In the classroom, Carter tackles AP and honor classes while carrying a 4.10 GPA leading Pierce to label him truly an "outstanding student athlete."

Football: Burns a Hot Prospect as Two More NCAA Division I Schools Offer Stone Bridge DL

(Feb. 14, 2010) - Stone Bridge High School 6-foot-7 junior defensive lineman Rob Burns will have plenty of choices as two more NCAA Division I schools -- Stanford and Wake Forest -- have joined Virginia and Duke in offering the Bulldog.

Wake Forest already has a bevy of Bulldogs on the roster including Y'Lou Brown, Mike Olson and Patrick and Zach Thompson.

Burns took unofficial visits to both Duke and Wake Forest this weekend and reports back: "Both schools are strong academically and offer BCS caliber football programs. Making a decision will be hard!"
