(June 26, 2010 - Broad Run High School announced this week that JJ Totaro is the new varsity wrestling coach and that Betsy Scudder is the new varsity girls volleyball coach.
Totaro served as an assistant to John Puterio and also is Broad Run's freshman football coach.
Puterio has accepted the position of assistant athletic director at Tuscarora High School in Leesburg.
Scudder replaces Ellen Roberts who stepped down at the end of last season. Scudder had served previously as the JV coach at Broad Run.

News: More on the New Woodgrove Coaches
(June 26, 2010) - Here is some more information on the new coaches officially hired Tuesday night for Woodgrove High School, opening this fall in Purcellville:
Baseball- Tonight at the Loudoun County Public School’s board meeting, Mr. Brad Bauder was approved as the first Baseball Coach at Woodgrove High School. Mr. Bauder comes to Woodgrove after serving as the Assistant Varsity Coach at Loudoun Valley (4 years) and Freedom High School (1 year). Mr. Bauder has also coached boy’s basketball at Potomac Falls High School for the past 4 years, including serving as the assistant varsity coach on the 2010 AA State Championship Team. Mr. Bauder, a resident of Western Loudoun and a graduate of Broad Run High School, played Division I baseball at Virginia Tech including serving as team captain in 2003 and 2004. A four year starter and an All Big East Team selection in 2001 and 2004, Mr. Bauder plans on building a Woodgrove Baseball tradition on hard work, respect, class and character.
Girl’s Lacrosse- Tonight at the Loudoun County Public School’s board meeting, Dr. Robert Fuller was approved as the first Head Girl’s Lacrosse Coach at Woodgrove High School. Dr. Fuller, a resident of Western Loudoun and a Dentist in Leesburg, comes to us with 5 years of high school coaching experience in girl’s lacrosse and volleyball at Loudoun Valley and Notre Dame Academy respectively. Dr. Fuller has been involved in youth sports and community organizations in Western Loudoun for the past 18 years. Most recently, Dr. Fuller served two years on the Loudoun Valley girl’s lacrosse staff as an assistant JV coach and varsity defensive specialist. Dr. Fuller plans on building a strong program to reflect the high level of support, interest and success that has been prevalent in Western Loudoun since the mid 1990's.
Girl’s Soccer-Tonight at the Loudoun County Public School’s board meeting, Mrs. Erin Barrett was approved as the first Head Girl’s Soccer Coach at Woodgrove High School. Mrs. Barrett is excited about developing a solid program that emphasizes dedication, integrity and teamwork. Mrs. Barrett comes to Woodgrove High School with 7 years of high school soccer experience in Loudoun County, 4 at Potomac Falls High School, 1 at Loudoun County High School and 2 at Loudoun Valley High School. Mrs. Barrett was on the coaching staff of the state championship team Potomac Falls High School with Kris Kelican in 2004 and a part of this year’s Loudoun Valley staff who finished an outstanding season in the AAA State Semi-Final game this spring. Mrs. Barrett comes to Woodgrove with 5 additional years of youth girl’s soccer experience since 2001. She is a native of Loudoun County having played at and graduated from Broad Run High School. Currently, a resident of Western Loudoun and a future teacher at Woodgrove, Mrs. Barrett also played Division I Soccer at the College of Charleston from 1996-1999.

Mr. Sharples comes to Woodgrove after 16 years of high school experience including the past 8 years at Handley High School. Mr. Sharples career high school achievements as a head coach and assistant coach include: 2004 AA Virginia semifinalist (Handley Boys), 2001 AA State Champions (Broad Run Girls), 1997 Coach of the Year (Martinsville Girls) and 1994 AA Runner-up (Martinsville Boys). Mr. Sharles has also served 6 years as an assistant at Averett University and Ferrum College and has served for the last 6 years as the Head Coach at Lord Fairfax Community College. Mr. Sharples plans to build a winning program rich in tradition that promotes character and sportsmanship. Mr. Sharples will teach and serve as the Physical Education Department Chair at Woodgrove next year.

Mr. Spicer, a resident of Western Loudoun, has produced over 40 softball players who continued their playing experience in college. Mr. Spicer brings passion and enthusiasm for “TEAM” while creating valuable interpersonal relationships for success. Mr. Spicer will teach Chemistry at Woodgrove High School next year.
Boy’s Tennis- Tonight at the Loudoun County Public School’s board meeting, Mr. Steven Cohen was approved as the first Boy’s Tennis Coach at Woodgrove High School. Mr. Cohen, a resident of Western Loudoun and a future guidance counsel at Woodgrove, is coming to Woodgrove from Briar Woods High School in Ashburn. For seven years Mr. Cohen has served as a tennis coach, tennis, instructor and tennis professional in Northern Virginia. A former tennis coach at Woodson High School, Langley High School and Loudoun Valley High School, Mr. Cohen comes to Woodgrove to build a solid program with new traditions and solid educational opportunities for students of Western Loudoun.

Mr. Staneart comes to Woodgrove after building an outstanding program at Loudoun Valley over the past 5 years. Mr. Staneart has sixteen years of track and field experience. His experience includes periods of time in Maryland, South Carolina, Michigan and Florida. Mr. Staneart plans not only to have a vision but also a plan with criteria that entails a combination of working smart through a strong organizational structure, having a passion for success and focusing on the people that will help achieve that vision. Mr. Staneart also will serve as a Social Science teacher at Woodgrove next year.

News: Tuscarora Hires Assistant AD, Athletic Trainer, Nine Varsity Coaches
(June 23, 2010) - Tuscarora High School, which will open in the fall in Leesburg, has named an assistant athletic director, athletic trainer and nine varsity coaches.
Broad Run wrestling coach John Puterio Is the Huskies new assistant AD. Among the new coaches are Heritage coaches Megan Smith (softball) and Katie Boring (girls track) and Potomac Falls boys soccer coach Dave Gryder who won a state title with the Panthers.
John Puterio, Assistant Athletic Director
Mr. Puterio graduated from Mary Washington College in 1993 with a BS in Psychology. He received a Masters of Education Degree from Marymount University in 1993. He was previously a teacher at Farmwell Station and Harper Park Middle Schools teaching American Civics and Physical Science from 1998 till 2010. Mr. Puterio has held several different coaching positions in Loudoun County Public Schools. He was a Varsity Assistant Softball for Potomac Falls High School form 2000-2003, Broad Run Junior Varsity Head Wrestling Coach from 1999-2001, Broad Run Varsity Assistant wrestling coach from the 2001-2004 and was the Head Varsity Wrestling coach from 2004-2010 at Broad Run High School.
Stacy Gallo, Athletic Trainer
Ms. Gallo graduated from Bridgewater College in 2006 with a BS in Athletic Training and is currently working on her masters in Human Movement. She was given the Outstanding Leadership Award at Bridgewater College in 2006. She was a Student Athletic Trainer for the Bridgewater Track Teams, Field Hockey and Women’s Softball teams as well as serving as a Student Athletic Trainer for the Football team. In 2006 she was a Student Athletic Trainer for the Hula Bowl in Hawaii. She completed her Internship at North Carolina A&T University. She was the long term substitute at Loudoun County High School from January 2010 till June 2010.
Marsha Hermes, Head Varsity Volleyball
Ms. Hermes served as the varsity head coach at Brentsville High School for the 2009 season. Ms. Hermes graduated in 2008 with a BS in Business Administration and a concentration in marketing from Bridgewater College. She was a four year starter at outside hitter for the Eagles. While playing for the Eagles Ms. Hermes compiled an outstanding college career being named First Team All-Conference twice and Conference Player of the Year once. She holds the single season and career record for kills at Bridgewater. Ms. Hermes is excited to join the Tuscarora family and is looking forward to bringing her knowledge of the game to help develop the Tuscarora Volleyball program into one of the areas best.
Traelic Cotter, Head Baseball Coach
Mr. Cotter in a 2004 graduate of Point Park University with a Bachelor of Elementary Education with a minor in History. He is currently a fifth grade teacher at Hutchinson Farm Elementary School. Mr. Cotter was a standout baseball player at Schenectady Community College and then Point Park University where he was the team captain and played first base, third base, catcher, outfield and pitched. Mr. Cotter was named National Player of the Week (NAIA Division1) twice, three time All-American and three time Academic All-American. He also had five years of semi-professional baseball experience. Mr. Cotter has coached a variety of Varsity Baseball teams throughout Loudoun County. Most recently, he has been the Varsity Assistant Baseball Coach for Potomac Falls High School since 2008, where he led the Panthers to a state quarter final last year, as well as a Regional and District Championships. He has been a lead instructor at Baseball Diamond Elite and Al Liberi Baseball Academy in Pittsburgh, Pa, as well as, the head coach and founder of the TC Twins Organization.
Dave Gryder , Varsity Soccer Coach
Mr. Gryder graduated from Longwood College in 1996 with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education K-12. In May of 2009, Mr. Gryder received his Master of Education in Curriculum and Technology Instruction from George Mason University. He is currently a physical education teacher at Heritage High School. Mr. Gryder has over thirteen years of head coaching experiencing throughout Loudoun County. Most recently he was the head boys’ soccer coach at Potomac Falls High School, where he led the team to a State title in 2006, and multiple state tournament games. In 2007, Mr. Gryder was named the Washington Post All-Met Coach of the year. He will also be the Head Coach for the 2010 Summer Virginia High School Coaches Association All-Star team.
Ashlee Comber, Varsity Girls Soccer Head Coach
Mrs. Comber graduated from Florida State University where she was a three year starter as a defender for the women’s soccer team. Before she attended FSU she played her high school soccer in Michigan were she was a member of a State Championship and State Runner up teams. She was a four year Varsity Starter and Captain. After graduation she played Semi-Pro soccer for teams in Tampa Bay and Jacksonville. She has been coaching at Soccer Camps since 1999. She is Head coach of the 93 G Red Impact Travel team and was named Loudoun Youth Soccer Association Travel Coach of the Year award in 2009. She is the Assistant Coach for the Northern Virginia Olympic Development Program. She was an Assistant Varsity coach at Potomac Falls High School in 2010.
Troy Harry, Head Boys Varsity Track & Field Coach & Assistant Cross-Country
Mr. Harry graduated from La Salle University with a BS in Political Science in 1998. He received his Masters Degree in Information Technology from American Intercontinental University in 2000. While attending Quince Orchard High School he was a three-time 3200M state champion, 1600M state champion and two-time state Cross-Country Champion. While attending La Salle, Mr. Harry was a standout Cross Country and Distance Runner, winning numerous Atlantic 10 Championships. He was a two-time 3000M indoor champion, two-time Mile indoor champion and a two-time 3200M relay Champion. He was named to the All-Conference team in 1995, 1996 and 1997 and was inducted into the La Salle Hall of Athletes in 2007. He served as a Volunteer Assistant Cross Country coach at Loudoun County High School during the 2009 season.
Katie Boring, Head Girls Track and Field Coach
Mrs. Boring graduated from Lynchburg College in 2001 with a BS in Health Science & Recreation earning Cum Laude honors. While attending Lynchburg she was a member of the track and basketball teams. She was and All-Conference selection in track as well as an All-Academic selection. She has served as Head Track and Field Coach for the Heritage High School since 2002. Mrs. Boring lead the Lady Pride to three district Championships and One Region Championship. She has coached Four State Champion relay teams and One State Champion hurdler and was named Coach of the Year. Mrs. Boring is currently a Health and Physical education teacher at Smart’s Mill Middle School in Leesburg.
Megan Smith, Head Varsity Softball Coach
Ms. Smith graduated from James Madison University in 2006 with a BS in Interdisciplinary Social Sciences and received her Masters in Secondary Education in 2007. She was a four year starter at JMU after playing for Park View High School. While at JMU she was recognized as a NFCA Academic All-American and holds the record for most career doubles. She has been the Head Varsity Softball Coach at Heritage High School in Leesburg, VA since 2007. She is also an instructor at Diamond Sports Training in Sterling, VA. She was previously the Assistant JV coach at Turner Ashby High School in Bridgewater, VA. Ms. Smith is a History teacher at Loudoun Valley High School in Purcellville, VA.
Marina Bass-Thomas, Head Varsity Girls Tennis Coach
Mrs. Bass-Thomas graduated with a BA in Spanish from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1988. She received her masters in Secondary Education from Old Dominion University in 1996. She was the first Head Girls tennis coach for Hickory High School in Chesapeake, Virginia from 1996-2000. She led the Lady Hawks to there first district Championship. She is the Department Chair at Tuscarora for the Foreign Language Department.
Margaret Upp, Head Coach Varsity Gymnastics
Mrs. Upp received her BS in Physical Education with an Endorsement in Health Education from George Mason University. Mrs. Upp has been a teacher in Loudoun County since August 2007 and will be teaching Health and Physical Education at Tuscarora High School starting in August 2010. She was previously a teacher at Freedom High School, Mercer Middle School, Arcola Elementary, Smarts Mill Middle School. She was a Cheerleader at West Virginia University from 1989-1991 and has previously coached at Gemini Gymnastics Gym in Herdon, VA. She has coached several All-Star Cheerleading teams and was the tumbling coach for Herndon High school’s Cheerleading Programs from 2000-2002.

Katie Boring, Head Girls Track and Field Coach
Mrs. Boring graduated from Lynchburg College in 2001 with a BS in Health Science & Recreation earning Cum Laude honors. While attending Lynchburg she was a member of the track and basketball teams. She was and All-Conference selection in track as well as an All-Academic selection. She has served as Head Track and Field Coach for the Heritage High School since 2002. Mrs. Boring lead the Lady Pride to three district Championships and One Region Championship. She has coached Four State Champion relay teams and One State Champion hurdler and was named Coach of the Year. Mrs. Boring is currently a Health and Physical education teacher at Smart’s Mill Middle School in Leesburg.
Megan Smith, Head Varsity Softball Coach
Ms. Smith graduated from James Madison University in 2006 with a BS in Interdisciplinary Social Sciences and received her Masters in Secondary Education in 2007. She was a four year starter at JMU after playing for Park View High School. While at JMU she was recognized as a NFCA Academic All-American and holds the record for most career doubles. She has been the Head Varsity Softball Coach at Heritage High School in Leesburg, VA since 2007. She is also an instructor at Diamond Sports Training in Sterling, VA. She was previously the Assistant JV coach at Turner Ashby High School in Bridgewater, VA. Ms. Smith is a History teacher at Loudoun Valley High School in Purcellville, VA.
Marina Bass-Thomas, Head Varsity Girls Tennis Coach
Mrs. Bass-Thomas graduated with a BA in Spanish from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1988. She received her masters in Secondary Education from Old Dominion University in 1996. She was the first Head Girls tennis coach for Hickory High School in Chesapeake, Virginia from 1996-2000. She led the Lady Hawks to there first district Championship. She is the Department Chair at Tuscarora for the Foreign Language Department.
Margaret Upp, Head Coach Varsity Gymnastics
Mrs. Upp received her BS in Physical Education with an Endorsement in Health Education from George Mason University. Mrs. Upp has been a teacher in Loudoun County since August 2007 and will be teaching Health and Physical Education at Tuscarora High School starting in August 2010. She was previously a teacher at Freedom High School, Mercer Middle School, Arcola Elementary, Smarts Mill Middle School. She was a Cheerleader at West Virginia University from 1989-1991 and has previously coached at Gemini Gymnastics Gym in Herdon, VA. She has coached several All-Star Cheerleading teams and was the tumbling coach for Herndon High school’s Cheerleading Programs from 2000-2002.
News: Woodgrove Taps Valley Coaching Pipeline
(June 23, 2010) - Woodgrove High School, the new school opening in Purcellville in the fall, named seven varsity coaches last night including six with connections at Loudoun Valley.
18-year Viking softball coach Joe Spicer and girls track coach Kent Staneart are both moving over as well as current or former Valley assistants Brad Bauder (baseball), Dr. Robert Fuller (girls lacrosse), Erin Barrett (girls soccer), Steven Cohen (boys tennis).
John Sharples has been hired as the boys soccer coach. Sharples comes from Handley but won a state title while leading the Broad Run girls.

Girls Basketball: Kevin Reed Steps Down from Loudoun County Position to Take Over Sherando Program
(June 21, 2010) - Loudoun County High School girls basketball coach Kevin Reed, who has led the Raiders for eight successful seasons including a VHSL Division 4 state title in 2009, informed the school Monday that he has stepped down to take over the Sherando program in Stephens City.
"I'm happy for him and his family but it is a great loss for us," said Loudoun County Athletic Director Ken Wright.
Wright said he understood Reed's decision, based largely on the fact that he can now coach at a school that is just minutes from his home and family, but that it was still a "melancholy day" in Leesburg.
Reed said in an email to parents and fellow coaches: "With a heavy heart, I have decided to step down as head coach at Loudoun County HS. As many of you know, I have been at County for eight years, and it has truly been a major part of my life. For those four to five months each year that I am coaching, I rarely see my kids and wife. The opportunity for me to coach in my community did become available, and I have graciously accepted the head girl's basketball position at Sherando HS."
With the resignation of Jason Eldredge earlier this year at Freedom High School, this will leave the top two teams in the Dulles District -- Freedom and Loudoun County, which have combined for three state titles in the past two seasons -- with first-year coaches next winter.

Volleyball: Dominion Grad Organizes Benefit Tournament to Help Animals Affected by Gulf Oil Spill
(June 21, 2010) - Dominion High School grad Ally Reed has organized a benefit volleyball tournament to help those animals affected by the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The tournament will be held July 16 from 6:30 p.m. to midnight at the Dulles Golf Center sand courts in Sterling.

(June 17, 2010) - It was a big day for the Harkey's when the Northwest Region girls lacrosse coaches got together and voted on their 2010 selections as Loudoun Valley High School senior Shannon Harkey was named the Player of the Year and dad, Jay Harkey, was named the Coach of the Year.
The Vikings advanced to the VHSL semifinals for the third straight year.

News: Heritage Track and Field Coach Kate Cassidy is Pride's New Assistant Athletic Director
(June 15, 2010) - Heritage High School has hired current boys track and field coach Kate Cassidy as the Pride's new assistant athletic director.
Cassidy replaces Randy Trenary, who leaves Heritage to become the first ever assistant athletic director for Woodgrove High School which opens this fall in Purcellville.
In addition to a new track and field coach to replace Cassidy, the Pride will be looking for a girls track and field coach as Katie Boring has announced that she is stepping down for her position at the school.

(June 15, 2010) - Sam Beazell of Potomac Falls, son of Karen and John Beazell, a freshman varsity goalie at Paul VI Catholic High School in Fairfax has been named an adidas All-America and has been selected to represent the Mid Atlantic-Washington DC Region in the 2010 adidas National Lacrosse Classic to be held in Germantown, Md. July 5-8.
The adidas National Lacrosse Classic brings the top 500 high school underclassmen lacrosse players in the country to one venue, where 20 regional teams will compete to become the 2010 USA Champion and earn the chance to compete for an International Championship against Canada.

(June 15, 2010) - The Potomac Falls High School baseball team and Loudoun Valley High School boys lacrosse team both fell just short of state titles, losing over the weekend in the finals.
The Panthers lost to Poquoson, 9-1, in the AA baseball finals at Radford University on Sunday morning in a game that was postponed by weather from Saturday. The Vikings fell, 12-5, to a fired-up Langley squad Saturday night at Westfield High School in the VHSL finals.

All-Time State Champion and Runner-ups in Loudoun History
(June 13, 2010) - The state titles brought home by the Broad Run and Stone Bridge high school girls soccer teams Saturday continued a trend as girls from Loudoun have now captured 43 of the total 59 state titles won.
Also, Broad Run now has 13 state titles, just two away from historic rival Park View, all-time leader with 15. Stone Bridge now has seven titles since opening a decade ago.
And between the winter -- Potomac Falls boys and Freedom girls won basketball titles -- the
"2010 decade" already has four total titles or one more than Loudoun teams won in the 1970s total. Of course, the 2010 athletes have a long way to go to catch up to the "2000 decade" which finished in the fall with a whopping 37.

Girls Soccer: Stone Bridge Girls Crush Cosby, 4-0, to Win AAA State Title

Despite controlling the first half, Stone Bridge led Cosby just 1-0 on an own goal in the 29th minute but all that changed just 22 seconds into the second half as Herndon scored off a great Murielle Tiernan feed. When Herndon scored four minutes later it was basically all over.
Herndon's second goal came off a Jazmyn Ervins pass and gave the SB freshman a school record 29 goals on the season, including 14 in postseason.
Senior Sara Bowers added the final goal in the 63rd minute unassisted as she finished off her own shot.
SB keeper Julia Harmison made four saves for the shutout, the 14th of the season for the stingy Stone Bridge defense.

Girls Soccer: Broad Run Wins Third Straight State Title with 2-0 Win Over Loudoun County
Radford (June 11, 2010) – Broad Run High School scored a goal in each half and captured its third straight Group AA Girls Soccer State Championship with a 2-0 victory over Loudoun County Saturday morning at Radford University as part of the 2010 Spring Jubilee.
Ellie Zoepfl provided the eventual game winner in the 21st minute, while Cassie Smith added the final strike just six minutes into the second period.
Zoepfl, who scored as a freshman in the 2008 title game won 1-0 by the Spartans, scored her goal with 18:05 left in the first half off a corner kick from Whitney Church, who had scored in the 2009 title game.
It was another Church corner kick that led to Smith's goal just 6:08 into the second half. Smith made it three straight years that the Spartans got a goal in the title game from a freshman as Erin Brady scored in last year's game.
Broad Run, which has won four state title in the last 12 years, finished with a 6-3 edge in shots and 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The Spartan shutout -- the team's eighth straight in the postseason as BR out-scored opponents 20-0 on the way to the title -- was lead by the stifling defense of Jenny Taylor, Brenna Smith, Kacey Kelley and Erin Brady in front of freshman goalie Haley Casanova, who took over in the district finals when the starting keeper was injured and didn't allow a goal in six starts.

The unbeaten Bulldogs have history on their side as they face Cosby as teams from Northern Region have won an amazing 25 of 26 state title since VHSL started girls soccer championships in 1984. The Bulldogs face Cosby, a team that edged Loudoun Valley in penalty kicks in the semifinals to prevent a Bulldog-Vikings rematch from the regular season.

Baseball: Potomac Falls Powers Its Way to the AA State Finals
Pulaski (June 11, 2010) - The Potomac Falls High School baseball team has earned a rematch with Poquoson High School on Saturday, this time for the state championship. Poquoson eliminated the Panthers in the Semiginals, 3-0, on their way to the AA state championship last year. As a result of Potomac Falls' 10-3 victory over Jefferson Forest Friday, the Panthers will face Poquoson in the championship game on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Radford University.
Potomac Falls jumped all over the Cavaliers with a 3 run first inning. Ben Sweger lead off with a walk and raced around the bases to score when Thomas Rea’s sacrifice bunt was thrown into rightfield by the Cavaliers pitcher Trevor Johnston. Rea end up on third and proceeded to score on a passed ball to go up 2-0. Ryan Miller and Michael Lascomb then singled to center and Miller scored when Sam Bass reached on an error to give the Panthers the 3-0 lead.
In the second inning, Sweger walked again and after stealing second, scored on Rea’s single to center. Meanwhile, Ryan Mahoney was throwing a perfect game through three innings as the Panthers scored four more times in the third. Miller lead off with a double and Lascomb and Bass walked to load the bases. Jackson Rogers then hit a 2 RBI double to left followed by an RBI single up the middle by Sweger and the Panthers led 8-0.
Mahoney gave up a run in the fourth inning to lose the perfect game on an RBI single by Byran Sanderson and gave up another in the fifth when he walked in a run. The Panthers responded with two runs in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Rogers and an RBI by Colin Deely.
Stephen Fisher pitched the seventh inning for the save to setup the rematch.

Boys Lacrosse: Loudoun Valley Rolls into the State Semifinals Behind Biggest Offensive Outburst of the Season

(June 11, 2010) - The Loudoun Valley High School boys lacrosse, behind their biggest offensive outburst of the season, blasted Brooke Point, 18-8, Thursday at Westfield High School to advance to the Virginia High School League state finals for the first time in school history.
The Vikes (18-3) will face Langley (19-2) at 8 p.m. Saturday at Westfield in a rematch of a March 30 game in which Loudoun Valley won, 8-7, in overtime. Both of Langley's losses this season have been in overtime -- to Valley and to Robinson in the Northern Region finals.
Valley's three losses include two one-goal games (to West Springfield in overtime and to Osbourn Park in the Northwest Region finals) and to prep power St. Stpehens/St. Agnes.
Thursday's state semifinal was a rematch of the Northwest Region semifinal which Valley ran away with, 16-6, and again the Vikes had too much firepower for BP.
Chris Daddio, headed to Syracuse next season, controlled the pace of the game for the Vikings by winning 17 of 21 faceoffs and he added four goals. Senior attack Chris Rabung also had the hot hand for the Vikes, scoring five, but Valley also showed its offensive depth as the Vikings first six goals were scored by six different players -- Daddio, senior defense Garrett Swankowski, sophomore middie Denis Radcliffe, junior attack Brandon Bunce, senior middie Matt McGuinness and Rabung.
Brook Point's goal with three seconds left in the first quarter made it just 4-3 Vikes but Valley rolled to four straight goals to start the second quarter and led comfortably, 10-4, at the half.
Valley coach Jeff Lewandowski implored his team at the half to not have a letdown but the offensive sputtered a bit until senior attack Dylan Zook stole a pass near the BP net and easily put it in for an 11-5 lead with 4:43 left in the third. That offensive then flowed as Rabung scored and a frustrated BP team picked up a penalty after the goal. Zook then made a nifty behind the back pass to Daddio for a score to make it 13-5 heading into the fourth.
Rabung and Daddio kept the pressure on in the fourth and Valley was on its way to a season-high 18 goals. The Vikes, known for their defense, have only given up more than nine goals once on the season, in the 12-4 loss to St. Stephens/St. Agnes.

(June 11, 2010) - The Loudoun Valley High School boys lacrosse, behind their biggest offensive outburst of the season, blasted Brooke Point, 18-8, Thursday at Westfield High School to advance to the Virginia High School League state finals for the first time in school history.
The Vikes (18-3) will face Langley (19-2) at 8 p.m. Saturday at Westfield in a rematch of a March 30 game in which Loudoun Valley won, 8-7, in overtime. Both of Langley's losses this season have been in overtime -- to Valley and to Robinson in the Northern Region finals.
Valley's three losses include two one-goal games (to West Springfield in overtime and to Osbourn Park in the Northwest Region finals) and to prep power St. Stpehens/St. Agnes.
Thursday's state semifinal was a rematch of the Northwest Region semifinal which Valley ran away with, 16-6, and again the Vikes had too much firepower for BP.
Chris Daddio, headed to Syracuse next season, controlled the pace of the game for the Vikings by winning 17 of 21 faceoffs and he added four goals. Senior attack Chris Rabung also had the hot hand for the Vikes, scoring five, but Valley also showed its offensive depth as the Vikings first six goals were scored by six different players -- Daddio, senior defense Garrett Swankowski, sophomore middie Denis Radcliffe, junior attack Brandon Bunce, senior middie Matt McGuinness and Rabung.
Brook Point's goal with three seconds left in the first quarter made it just 4-3 Vikes but Valley rolled to four straight goals to start the second quarter and led comfortably, 10-4, at the half.
Valley coach Jeff Lewandowski implored his team at the half to not have a letdown but the offensive sputtered a bit until senior attack Dylan Zook stole a pass near the BP net and easily put it in for an 11-5 lead with 4:43 left in the third. That offensive then flowed as Rabung scored and a frustrated BP team picked up a penalty after the goal. Zook then made a nifty behind the back pass to Daddio for a score to make it 13-5 heading into the fourth.
Rabung and Daddio kept the pressure on in the fourth and Valley was on its way to a season-high 18 goals. The Vikes, known for their defense, have only given up more than nine goals once on the season, in the 12-4 loss to St. Stephens/St. Agnes.

News: APEX Gymnastics Has Raised Over $17K for Relay for Life
(June 10, 2010) - APEX Gymnastics teams, friends and family have raised over $17,000 for Relay for Life! Come join APEX on June 12 at Heritage High School where they will walk for 24 hours in honor of those who are battling the terrible disease of cancer.
APEX has spent the past six weeks doing fundraisers, soliciting money and holding open gyms as a way to raise money for this great cause. APEX has raised more money than any other team in Western Loudoun and has over 150 people walking in the event. APEX invites the public to visit their booth, play some games, win some prizes. Free open gym passes will be handed out at the event.

Soccer: Super Six! Half Dozen Loudoun Soccer Teams Advance to State Semifinals

In AAA, Stone Bridge swept a boys/girls state quarterfinal home doubleheader before one of the largest soccer crowds in school history with the Bulldog boys beating Patrick Henry-Roanoke, 2-1 in overtime, and then the Bulldog girls remained unbeaten on the year with a 1-0 win over Forest Park. Also in AAA, the Loudoun Valley girls edged Robinson, 1-0, in Purcellville to advance.
In AA, Broad Run swept a girls/boys state quarterfinal home doubleheader before an appreciative and vocal crowd as the Spartan girls blanked Chancellor, 2-0, and the Spartan boys edged Courtland, 1-0. Also in AA, the Loudoun County girls, the No. 3 seed coming out of the Dulles District, advanced easily to the state semifinals with a 3-0 win at Jamestown.
The lone loss on the night for Loudoun came when the Potomac Falls boys couldn't hold a 1-0 lead at Jamestown and fell 2-1.
The AAA teams will play at Westfield High School on Friday with the Loudoun Valley girls facing Cosby at 11 a.m. and then the Stone Bridge boys and girls take on national power Cox at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. The AA teams will play at Radford with the Broad Run girls facing Hidden Valley at 10 a.m. followed by the Loudoun County girls and Blacksburg at noon. The Broad Run boys take on defending state champion Blacksburg at 2 p.m..

(June 9, 2010) - It was an all too familiar ending for yet another brilliant girls lacrosse season at Loudoun Valley High School as the Vikings fell in the VHSL state semifinals for the third consecutive year.
Woodson (15-5) scored seven answered goals to finish the game to turn a 10-6 deficit into a 13-10 victory. The Vikings (17-3) have gone a combined 52-9 over the past three seasons but came up just short of the title game, falling to Chantilly in 2009, 14-9, and to Oakton in 2008, 12-10.
The Valley boys will have to wait a day for their semifinal date as Wednesday's match with Brooke Point at Westfield High School was pushed back a day due to rain.

Softball: Briar Woods and Loudoun Valley Have Seasons End in State Quarterfinals
(June 9, 2010) - The Briar Woods High School and Loudoun Valley High School softball seasons came to an end Tuesday with both teams falling in the state quarterfinals, the Falcons at Powhatan, 4-0, in AA and the Vikings at Madison, 6-1, in AAA.
For Briar Woods (21-4) the loss ended the Falcons best ever season as the school captured its first Dulles District regular-season title and repeated as district tournament champs before finishing runner-up in Region II.
For Loudoun Valley (17-7) the loss ended the Vikings chances of returning to the state title game. Madison's Sam Brady pitched a 3-hitter for the win over Valley with 10 strikeouts.

Baseball: AA State Title Game Time Shift
(June 9, 2010) - The VHSL has release new state title time for AA Baseball this Saturday at Radford. If Potomac Falls win, the title game will be 1 p.m. If Jefferson Forest wins, the game time would be 2:30 p.m.

Sterling (June 9, 2010) - The Potomac Falls High School baseball team once again broke out their big bats, scoring nine runs in the third inning Tuesday night, to blast their way to the AA state semifinals with an 11-6 win over Powhatan. Jackson Rogers went the distance for the Panthers against the Region I runners-ups.
Potomac Falls faces Jefferson Forest (winners over Tunstall) on Friday at 10 a.m. at Calfee Park in Pulaski.
Potomac Falls got on the board in the first inning on consecutive hits by Thomas Rea and Ryan Mahoney. Ryan Miller then hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Rea and give the Panthers a 1-0 lead.
Powhatan came back in the third, scoring three runs, as Rogers started to have some control problems. After giving up a single to Doug Jamerson and walking Jake Bowlin, Tyler Allen and Luke Scherzer came through with clutch singles to give Powhatan the 2-1 lead. Rogers then walked the next two batters forcing in the third run of the inning in before recording the last out.
The Panthers then responded in their half of the third ... in a big way.
Ben Sweger started the inning with a single up the middle. Rea followed with his second hit of the game and Mahoney then hit an RBI single to left. With runners on the corners, Miller hit a 2-run double to right to give the Panthers the 4-3 lead.
The Panthers were just getting started as Sam Bass then hit a single up the middle to score Miller before Rogers reached on an error. Matt Hoover then hit an RBI single to right. Tyler Caldwell followed with a walk to load the bases before Sweger stroked his second hit of the inning up the middle to score Rogers. Rea then followed with his third hit of the game -- and second hit of the inning -- scoring Caldwell and Sweger, giving the Panthers a 10-3 lead.
Given such a huge cushion Rogers settled down and began working the batters to his advantage. He cruised through the fourth inning before surrending two runs in the fifth on a two-out triple to center by Cole Phillips that just eluded the diving attempt of Mahoney.
Potomac Falls tacked on an insurance run in the sixth inning on a double by Dulles District Player of the Year Michael Lascomb and an RBI single by Colin Deely.
Powhatan got a leadoff home run from Tyler Allen in the seventh before Rogers retired the side for the 11-6 victory.

(June 9, 2010) - Conflicts with graduations has shifted the VHSL AAA state baseball schedule for Friday at Westfield High School. The Cosby vs. Woodbridge game will be played at noon followed by West Springfield vs. Western Branch at 3 p.m.
Breaking News! VHSL Postpones Boys Lacrosse Semifinals Until Thursday
(June 10, 2010) - The VHSL boys state semifinal lacrosse games scheduled for today at Westfield High School have been postponed until Thursday due to the rain.
Loudoun Valley will play Brooke Point at 5 p.m. followed by Woodson vs. Langley at 7:30 p.m.

Baseball: Broad Run Grad Conor Mullee Drafted by New York Yankees
A 4-year starter at Saint Peter's, playing in a record 205 games, Mullee gained the interest of MLB teams when he was asked to pitch for scouts on the school's "Pro Day" in the fall and he hit 93 mph on the radar gun. Mullee, who only pitched a couple of innings in high school, made seven relief appearances on the mound this season, hitting a reportedly 95 on the radar gun, while staying an everyday middle infielder.
In an interview with the Jersey Journal Mullee said: "(The Metropolitan area) is different than Virginia. I love it up here. I have no problem living in the city. My ultimate goal is to become a Major League player."
In his seven pitching appearances this spring he posed a 10.50 ERA. The 6-foot-3, 183-pounder finished his career as the school's all-time leader in games played (205), games started (205), at-bats (743), hits (216), doubles (55), RBIs (141) and total bases (331). He was No. 2 all-time in runs scored (130) and tied for No. 3 in home runs (16). He posted his best season this past spring while hitting .325 with eight home runs and a perfect 16 of 16 on stolen bases.
Mullee told the college's sports information department: "This is an extremely exciting day for me and my family. To be drafted by one of my favorite teams is a dream come true and I can't wait to put on Yankee Pinstripes."
