(June 11, 2010) - The Loudoun Valley High School boys lacrosse, behind their biggest offensive outburst of the season, blasted Brooke Point, 18-8, Thursday at Westfield High School to advance to the Virginia High School League state finals for the first time in school history.
The Vikes (18-3) will face Langley (19-2) at 8 p.m. Saturday at Westfield in a rematch of a March 30 game in which Loudoun Valley won, 8-7, in overtime. Both of Langley's losses this season have been in overtime -- to Valley and to Robinson in the Northern Region finals.
Valley's three losses include two one-goal games (to West Springfield in overtime and to Osbourn Park in the Northwest Region finals) and to prep power St. Stpehens/St. Agnes.
Thursday's state semifinal was a rematch of the Northwest Region semifinal which Valley ran away with, 16-6, and again the Vikes had too much firepower for BP.
Chris Daddio, headed to Syracuse next season, controlled the pace of the game for the Vikings by winning 17 of 21 faceoffs and he added four goals. Senior attack Chris Rabung also had the hot hand for the Vikes, scoring five, but Valley also showed its offensive depth as the Vikings first six goals were scored by six different players -- Daddio, senior defense Garrett Swankowski, sophomore middie Denis Radcliffe, junior attack Brandon Bunce, senior middie Matt McGuinness and Rabung.
Brook Point's goal with three seconds left in the first quarter made it just 4-3 Vikes but Valley rolled to four straight goals to start the second quarter and led comfortably, 10-4, at the half.
Valley coach Jeff Lewandowski implored his team at the half to not have a letdown but the offensive sputtered a bit until senior attack Dylan Zook stole a pass near the BP net and easily put it in for an 11-5 lead with 4:43 left in the third. That offensive then flowed as Rabung scored and a frustrated BP team picked up a penalty after the goal. Zook then made a nifty behind the back pass to Daddio for a score to make it 13-5 heading into the fourth.
Rabung and Daddio kept the pressure on in the fourth and Valley was on its way to a season-high 18 goals. The Vikes, known for their defense, have only given up more than nine goals once on the season, in the 12-4 loss to St. Stephens/St. Agnes.
