Title Saturday: Five Loudoun Teams Play for VHSL Championships Today

Stone Bridge freshman Ashley Herndon and Murielle Tiernan have played a big role in getting the Bulldogs to today's AAA state title girls soccer game


(June 12, 2010) - A spectacular spring sports season ends today with five Loudoun teams playing for VHSL state titles at Radford University and Westfield High School.

At least one state championship will be brought home as the Broad Run and Loudoun County girls square off in the AA state title game at 10 a.m. at Radford. It will be the fifth meeting on the season between the two Dulles District rivals with two-time defending state champion Broad Run holding the decisive 4-0 advantage.

Later at Radford, at 1 p.m., Potomac Falls baseball will try for its first state title against defending champion Poquoson, a team that knocked the Panthers out of the state semifinals in 2009.

Then at Westfield High School at 3 p.m. the Stone Bridge girls will try to add a AAA crown to the AA state title the program collected in 2005. The unbeaten Bulldogs have history on their side as they face Cosby as teams from Northern Region have won an amazing 25 of 26 state title since VHSL started girls soccer championships in 1984. The Bulldogs face Cosby, a team that edged Loudoun Valley in penalty kicks in the semifinals to prevent a Bulldog-Vikings rematch from the regular season.

Finally at 8 p.m. the Loudoun Valley High School boys lacrosse team faces Langley for the VHSL state title. The Vikes are shooting to become the first ever Loudoun team to win a state lax title. The title game is a rematch of a regular season game won by Valley in overtime, 8-7.
