(Oct. 31, 2012) - Heading into tonight's playoffs in the Dulles, Cedar Run and Liberty districts, the girls volleyball season wrapped up last Thursday with several upsets. Stone Bridge had its unbeaten season stopped by Langley in five sets and Broad Run dropped its first Cedar Run contest in five sets to Freedom. Tuscarora in the Dulles District got ready for the tournament with a five set win over Loudoun Valley and Loudoun County completed another unbeaten Dulles run:

Cross Country: Stone Bridge Boys Claim First Ever Liberty District Title

(Oct. 31, 2012) - Stone Bridge High School boys cross country team captured its first ever AAA Liberty District title last week at Burke Lake.

Brady Guertin led the Bulldogs with a second place finish at 15:45 and the pack running of Robert Willis-Tayloer Brodie-Austin Lushinski at 6-7-8 gave SB an easy victory over second place TJ, 43 to 73.

D.C. United: Storm Forces New York, D.C. to Swap Home MLS Playoff Dates

(Oct. 31, 2012) - D.C. United, with homefield advantage should have the second leg of its MLS playoff series with the New York Red Bulls but Red Bull Arena has been without power since the storm earlier this week so the playoff series will now start Saturday, Nov. 3 at RFK Stadium with an 8 p.m. kickoff.

New York will host the final leg Wednesday Nov. 7 at 8 p.m.

Football: Stone Bridge DL Jon Allen and QB Ryan Burns to Receive U.S. Army Bowl Jerseys in Ceremony Friday

Girls Volleyball: Stone Bridge's Ryan Ackermann, Sarah Fairchild Pick Up Liberty District Player of the Year, Libero of the Year Honors

(Oct. 31, 2012) - Stone Bridge High School senior Ryan Ackermann has been named Liberty District girls volleyball Player of the Year once again, and junior teammate Sarah Fairchild has picked up Libero of the Year honors in a vote of the district's coaches.

Stone Bridge enters the postseason tonight, hosting Thomas Jefferson at 7 p.m., after a 21-1 regular-season. Also for Stone Bridge, junior Cydney Gill was named first team, sophomore Shannon Williams was named second team and junior Libby Haslett picked up honorable mention.

Fairfax's Tyler Freiheit was named the Coach of the Year.

News: Aldie Man Charged with Soliciting Middle School Children Via Facebook

(Oct. 31, 2012) - A 43-year-old Aldie, Virginia man was charged October 24th with five counts of use of a computer to solicit a child less than 15-years-old.

In October, a member of the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office (LCSO) School Resource Officer Unit assigned to Lunsford Middle School was approached by school personnel regarding suspicious activity on a student's Facebook account.

Football: Tuscarora Nips Woodgrove, 35-31, on Reimers 5 TD Effort, Azzarita's Near-Perfect Passing Night

Leesburg (Oct. 27, 2012) - Even before their new high schools opened three years ago, Woodgrove and Tuscarora met on the football field to start a new rivalry. Back in 2010 it was all about raw potential and rookie miscues, but on Tuscarora's turf field Friday night the two programs showed just how far they have come as they locked up in an epic game that featured the area's top two running backs in Wolverine junior Josh Sweet and Husky sophomore Noah Reimers and five lead changes in the second half.

While Sweet (34-178, 3 TDs) put his team ahead with 1:45 left on a 1-yard dive, Reimers (27-148) had the last word as his fifth TD of the night, an 18-yard scamper with 40.9 seconds left, handed Tuscarora the thrilling 35-31 win. "The hole was massive, you could have driven a truck through it," said Reimers of his final TD that came on a night when he scored from 29, 4, 8 and 2 yards as well.

Cross Country: Region II Meet Moved from Oatlands to Tuscarora High School

(Oct. 31, 2012) - The Oatlands cross country course is known for its challenging water crossing but flooding this week in the area has prompted the Region II boys and girls cross country meet to move to Tuscarora High School on Thursday, Nov. 1.

The meet will now be run on the Huskies home course, Morven Park, which is adjacent to the school. Fans can park at the school and walk to the course. Girls race starts at 3 p.m., boys at 3:45 p.m.

(Oct. 31, 2012) - The Liberty District girls volleyball tournament opens tonight after at two-day storm delay with four quarterfinal matches. No. 1 seed Stone Bridge hosts Thomas Jefferson tonight and then will host the semifinals Thursday at 5:30 and 7 p.m. and the finals on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Women's Soccer: Broad Run Grad Holly King Named SEC Defensive Player of the Year

(Oct. 30, 2012) - University of Florida seniors Erika Tymrak (Bradenton, Fla.) and Broad Run High School grad Holly King (Ashburn, Va.) picked up Southeastern Conference Players of the Year honors and are joined by two other Gators on 2012 All-Southeastern Conference teams, the league office announced Monday afternoon.

Tymrak is the first Gator named the SEC Offensive Player of the Year since the league began in 2005 announcing a SEC Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year. King is the SEC Defensive Player of the Year and is the third Gator since 2009 to earn the honor. A Gator has now picked up a SEC Player of the Year honor 12 times in the program’s history.

Girls Volleyball: Cedar Run District Tournament Set - Broad Run, Freedom to Host Unique Doubleheaders on Halloween

(Oct. 30, 2012) - The Cedar Run District girls volleyball tournament is set with No. 1 seed Broad Run and No. 2 seed Freedom hosting unique doubleheaders on Wednesday as the two Loudoun schools will host quarterfinal matches at 5 p.m. and then play the winners of those matches just 30 minutes later in the semifinals.

At Freedom, Battlefield and Stonewall Jackson will meet first with the winner playing Freedom later that night and at Broad Run, Osbourn and Patriot will meet with the winner taking on the Spartans.

(Oct. 30, 2012) - Four area football teams continued their Top 10 rankings in the AP state football polls with Stone Bridge High School No. 4 in AAA and Briar Woods No. 2 in AA. Both the Bulldogs and Falcons are 9-0 on the season.

News: LCSO Prepares Essential Personnel for Potential Severe Weather; Residents Advised to Make Preparations Before the Storm

(Oct. 26. 2012) - With the possibility that Hurricane Sandy may bring severe weather to our area, Loudoun County Sheriff Michael L. Chapman has notified all essential personnel within the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office of the county's severe weather procedures.

Loudoun County officials are also urging residents to prepare now for the possibility of high winds and heavy rains next week. These precautions include simple steps, such as:

Football: Running Backs Gain Quickly on 1,000-Yard Milestone in Big Week

(Oct. 25, 2012) - No sooner than we said last week that Woodgrove's Josh Sweet and Tuscarora's Noah Reimers might be the only backs to bust 1,000 yards rushing on the season and then a bevy of backs tore after the milestone.

It was by far the biggest week of the season for running backs with the top seven backs on our leader charts combining for a whopping 1,046 yards on 129 carries (nifty 8.1 average) and 17 touchdowns and those gaudy numbers don't even include the monster game that Freedom's Brendan Kammerdiener  and John Champe's Andrew Bushrod threw together: 641 yards on 62 carries (10.3 average) and 7 touchdowns in Aldie.

Football: 5-TD Effort Puts Josh Sweet Back Ahead of the Field in Scoring Race

(Oct. 25, 2012) - Just when it looked like the rest of the field was finally gaining on Josh "Sweet T" Sweet's season-long scoring race lead the Woodgrove High School junior back broke clear again with a five TD effort Friday in the Wolverines win over Heritage.

Sweet's hold on the lead has been solid since Week 3 of the season when he scored six times in a win over Potomac Falls. The 5-foot-11, 214-pound workhorse now has four games of 3 TDs or more.

Loudoun County senior Brad "Super Szoka" is in second with 96 points followed closer by Tuscarora sophomore Noah "Flood the End Zone" Reimers. A total of 130 athletes now grace our scoring chart (please send any corrections to Dan Sousa at dan.sousa@vivaloudoun.com).

News: Malone Foundation Recipients Honored - Scholarships to Middle School Students in Art, Math, Music and science

(Oct. 25, 2012) - The Loudoun County School Board recognized the Teri and Shari Malone Foundation Class of 2012 at its October 23rd meeting.

The Teri and Shari Malone Foundation is dedicated to the memory of exceptionally talented twins who lost their lives in 1989 at the age of 14 in an automobile accident. They had just completed their eighth grade year at Seneca Ridge Middle School and were to enter the freshman class of Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in the fall. They were particularly accomplished in the fields of art, computer science, dance, mathematics, music and science as well as being straight A students at Seneca Ridge.

News: Loudoun Graduates 95.1% of Students on Time

(Oct. 25, 2012) - Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) had an on-time graduation rate of 95.1 percent for the Class of 2012, 7.1 percent above the state average. (On-time graduates complete high school in four years.)

Cheer: Dulles District 2012 Meet Results - Briar Woods Claims 4th Straight Title

(Oct. 24, 2012) - Briar Woods High School claimed its fourth straight Dulles District competitive cheer title Wednesday night before a supportive home crowd.

The Falcons scored 230 points to easily best regular-season champion Tuscarora (216). Loudoun County, the No. 5 seed, vaulted to third with a 209 point performance and Dominion edged Woodgrove for the fourth and final Region II spot, 199 to 198.5

Oct. 24, 2012) - We had 136 fans play last week and 22 went 10-0 including our overall leader Mtneer32 of Charles Town (81-9 record - Wow!) maintained a two game lead on the nearest pickers.

Football: Champe to Honor Veterans on Military Appreciation Night Nov. 2

(Oct. 24, 2012) - John Champe High School will honor veterans at Military Appreciation Night on the final home game, Nov. 2 when they host Madison County.

All Veterans in attendance will be recognized on the field before the game. Every fan in attendance will be giving a small American flag at the gate to wave during the ceremony.

Champe is working with the Virginia Wounded Warrior program and a portion of the gate from the game will be donated to the organization.

Redskins: Running Back Roster Moves Made

(Oct. 24, 2012) - The Washington Redskins announced Tuesday that they have signed free agent running back Keiland Williams and released running back Ryan Grant. The team also signed cornerback Domonique “D.J.” Johnson to its practice squad and waived wide receiver Emmanuel Arceneaux from its practice squad.

Lorton (Oct. 23, 2021) - James Madison High School's Shannon Brooks shot a 73 Tuesday for a two-day total of 145 to capture the VHSL Girls Open Championship by two strokes at Laurel Hill Golf Club. Broad Run's Dani Cook finished tied for 15th and her teammate Desiree Razon was tied for 19th.

Cook shot 83-83 for a 166 and Razon shot 80-89 for 169. Stone Bridge's Arianna Israel finished 33rd (93-90). Complete Results:

Girls Volleyball: Teams Prepare for Playoffs in Final Week of Regular Season

(Oct. 23, 2012) - Area girls volleyball teams are busy preparing for the playoffs as the final week of the regular season winds down. Some teams are already fitting their gyms for new championship banners as Loudoun County High School (16-0, 17-1) clinched last week yet another Dulles District title and Broad Run (8-0, 17-6) can clinch at least a share of Cedar Run District title with a win tonight at Battlefield.

The area's No. 1 team, undefeated Stone Bridge (5-0, 20-0) will have to wait until the Liberty District tournament to claim a district title as regular season district play is for seeding purposes only.

For Loudoun County, the Raiders have now won a share of seven straight Dulles District titles and the program has claimed 54 straight district wins.

Football: Four Area Teams Ranked in AP State Polls - Stone Bridge No. 4 in AAA; Briar Woods No. 2, Loudoun County No. 8, Tuscarora No. 10 in AA

(Oct. 23, 2012) - Loudoun is well represented in the AP high school football polls released this week with undefeated Stone Bridge (8-0) No. 4 in the state AAA rankings and undefeated Briar Woods (8-0) No. 2 in the AA rankings.

Cross Country: Complete Dulles District Meet 2012 Results

(Oct. 23, 2012) - The Dulles District 2012 cross country meet at Oatlands on Thursday had  no shortage of interesting story lines:

• The Potomac Falls High School boys returned to the top of the boys standings after a 1-year hiatus. The Panthers, winners of the first 10 Dulles meets held from 2001 thru 2010 before Loudoun County nudged them to the runner-up spot last year, won the title behind a powerful pack with no runner in the top six but the Panthers had all seven athletes come home in the top 18 for 55 team points to runner-up Briar Woods' 64.
• The third-year Tuscarora High School girls program took home their first team title with 51 total points to runner-up Woodgrove, another third-year program, with 70 points.
• Briar Woods senior Jackie Deffer lopped 25 seconds off her Oatlands Invitational time from September, running a 19:49 to win the girls individual title. Woodgrove freshman Emma Gillies ran a 19:59 for second, a second better than her Oatlands Invitational time.
• Loudoun County senior Patrick Joseph won his second straight individual title, cruising home in 16:15 -- some 24 seconds ahead of runner-up Tuscarora junior John Dooney. The Raiders have now claimed four straight individual titles with Tommy Curtin winning in 2009 and 2010.
• Loudoun County girls scored 89 points for third but the real battle came for the fourth and final Region II meet team spot as Heritage and Loudoun Valley both scored 121 points. The Pride advanced by edging the Raiders on a sixth place finish tiebreaker with freshman Mackenzie Scanlon's 46th place finish the clincher. 
• The Falcons boys runner-up finish was the team's highest placing ever in districts, having advance to regionals only once in the previous eight years with a fourth place finish in 2008.
• Also advancing to the Region II meet for the boys were third place Tuscarora (80) and fourth place Loudoun County (82).
• The Panthers pack saw all seven runners finish between 17:07 and 17:45 (six of them within 22 seconds of each other!): junior Matt Celsa (17:07), senior Sai Kurra (17:11), sophomore John Deker (17:14), senior Jordan Ferbrache (17:16), senior Ethan Pacifico (17:18), junior Kevin Ryan (17:29) and senior Nick Clem (17:45).
• The top four teams dominated the top of the leaderboard with only two boys advancing as individuals by finishing in the Top 15: Dominion JR Trent Lancaster (4th, 16:50) and Loudoun Valley FR Drew Hunter (15th, 17:19).
• The Potomac Falls girls, winners of the meet in four of the past five years coming in, saw their consecutive trips to region streak end at 12 straight years with a seventh place finish.
• Tuscarora girls had six place in the top 17: sophomore Anna Wasko (20:00) just a second out of second; freshman Kelly Reilly (20:39), freshman Raiya Al-Nsour (20:51), junior Collen Heberle (20:55), junior Natalie Rosas (21:02), and senior Lori Kostka (21:09).
• Girls advancing as individuals to Region II meet: Loudoun Valley junior Carolyn Conley (4th, 20:10), Woodgrove senior Alex Juzbasich (6th, 20:25), Loudoun Valley junior Molly Polizotto (7th, 20:29), Potomac Falls junior Sarah Dillistin (8th, 20:34).

Redskins: Sign Chris Cooley; Place TE Fred Davis on Reserve/Injured List

Ashburn (Oct. 22, 2012) - He's back! The Washington Redskins announced today that they have signed free agent tight end Chris Cooley. The team also placed tight end Fred Davis on its Reserve/Injured list.

Cooley (6-3, 243), the franchise’s all-time leader in receptions by a tight end, was released by the Redskins on Aug. 28, 2012. He spent his first eight seasons with the Redskins and posted 428 receptions for 4,703 yards and 33 receiving touchdowns.

Cross Country: Complete Cedar Run District Results

(Oct. 22, 2012) - It was deja vu all over again for the Cedar Run District cross country meet as the Battlefield High School boys and girls teams continued their lock on the championships. The Bobcat boys, behind Haben Zemichael's third straight individual title, won a sixth straight crown and the Bobcat girls, behind Nicole Cart'ers third straight individual title, made it three in a row on top of the podium.

The Broad Run and Freedom boys and girls teams also advanced to the Northwest Region meet.

Golf: First Standings VHSL Girls Open State Championship

(Oct. 22, 2012) - A pair of James Madison High School athletes are at the top of the leaderboard after the firs day of the VHSL Girls Open State Championship Monday at Laurel Hill Golf Club in Lorton.

Shannon Brooks shot an even par 72 to lead her teammate Amber Liu and Clover Hill's Abby Portyrata by a stroke. Lord Botetourt's Lyndsey Hunnell is two strokes back. Broad Run's Desiree Razon is tied for 12th at 80. Her teammate Danielle Cook is 16th at 83.

Baseball: New 9/10-U Travel Team Seeks Players

(Oct. 21, 2012) - The Ashburn Spartans Baseball team is a new 9/10U select travel baseball team seeking committed families for the spring 2013 season. We are looking for athletes that are serious about becoming better baseball players while competing in other sports in the fall and winter.

We will begin practice in January of 2013 and our season will end the last weekend in June.
