Playing in their first tournament together, the Spartans found themselves down 10-4 entering the last inning of their first game, but clutch hitting by Bennett Millar and Devin Robertson led to an eight run rally, and the Spartans held on to defeat their hosts, the Reston Warriors, by the score of 12-10.
Next up for the Spartans were the Vienna Blue Sox. Clinging to a one run lead in the bottom of the third, Luke Lindenfeldar chose a great time to put together his best at bat of the tournament. With the bases loaded and two outs, he ran the count to full before fouling off three straight tough pitches. He was then able to hit a drive over the centerfielder's head, driving in all three. Luke dedicated the big at bat to his injured friend, Ryan Gorey.
Kendall Dollarton threw four scoreless innings before giving way to Chaz Allison, who closed out the game. With the 11-4 win, the Spartans drew the top seed and once again found themselves playing the Blue Sox, but this time for the championship.
Mitch Griffis started the final game, and by the time he gave way to Lindenfeldar, the Spartans were well in front. Connor Hale came in to snuff out a late Blue Sox rally, and closed out the game.
Ian Smith, Evan Smith, and Lance Lacny hit the ball well all day for the Spartans, who won the last game by the score of 14-6.
The Spartans were back in action Sunday against the McLean Dirt Devils.
