Track and Field: Top Boys Marks for 2013 - Weekend Produces Great Results!

(April 29, 2013) - With perfect spring weather finally here and the postseason just around the final turn, the weekend produced the best marks of the 2013 track and field season with 14 of 16 boys events seeing a new top mark!

The weekend was highlighted by Loudoun County senior Patrick Joseph's stunning run at the Penn Relays mile which converted into a 4:06 1600 meter time -- some 21 seconds better than the next mark! The week before Joseph had the top 800 run of the season at Handley with a 1:52.64.

And if you followed our football coverage you might recognize some of these names: Alabama recruit Jon Allen of Stone Bridge heaved a 45-8 in the shot put at the Cassel's XBC Track Experience while his teammate D'Ante Yarborough posted top times in the 110 hurdles (14.31) and 300 hurdles (39.51).

Briar Woods super sophomore football player Brandon Polk, who already has offers from Maryland, Virginia Tech and ODU, blazed to new top times in the 100 meters (10.94) and 200 meters (22.35) at the Apple Blossom in Winchester.

Broad Run standout football player Dorian Jenkins put in a 22-1.75 long jump at Cassel's and his teammate Darion Bunting lept to 44-0.75 in the triple jump.

Tuscarora lineman Brandon Chirinos thew the discus 150-3 at Cassel's and Dominion's Garrett Robinson went 49.70 in the 400 meters at the Apple Blossom.

In the 3200, XC standout John Dooney of Tuscarora posted a 9:35.80.

All three relays had new No. 1 marks: Stone Bridge 4x100 (43.99); Loudoun County 4x400 (3:25.06) and Tuscarora 4x800 (8:06.05).

News: Today Loudoun County Law Enforcement Partners with DEA for Sixth Nationwide Prescription Take-Back Day

(April 27, 2013) - The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, Town of Leesburg Police Department and the Town of Purcellville Police Department have once again partnered with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in the “Take-Back” initiative that seeks to prevent increased pill abuse and theft.

On Saturday, April 27th, from 10AM – 2PM, law enforcement agencies in Loudoun County will be collecting potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs for destruction at five sites in the county. The sites include, the Eastern Loudoun Sheriff’s Station located at 46620 East Frederick Drive in Sterling, the Dulles South Public Safety Center located at 25216 Loudoun County Parkway in South Riding, the Lansdowne Public Safety Center located at 19845 Sandridge Way in Lansdowne, the Leesburg Police Department located at 65 Plaza Street in Leesburg and the Purcellville Police Department collection site will be located at Bush Tabernacle, 250 South Nursery Avenue in Purcellville. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

NFL: Redskins Select CB David Amerson, TE Jordan Reed

Ashburn (April 27, 2013) - The Washington Redskins made two selections on Day 2 of the 2013 NFL Draft, selecting North Carolina State cornerback David Amerson in the second round (No. 51 overall) and Florida tight end Jordan Reed in the third round (No. 85 overall).

Track and Field: Loudoun County's Patrick Joseph Runs 4:07.88 at Penn Relays - 3rd Place Finish is 4th Fastest Prep Time in U.S. this Year

(April 26, 2013) - Loudoun County High School senior Patrick Joseph's claim to be the greatest miler in Loudoun history was cemented Friday when he ran a 4:07.88 at the Penn Relays prestigious High School Boys' Mile Run Championship field.

Joseph's time was better than the previous meet record of 4:08.07 but he settled for third place as the race was won by Chantilly's Sean McGorty in 4:04.47 and Ben Malone of Hillsdale, N.J. ran a 4:05.59.

Joseph's time is currently the 4th fastest mile ran in the U.S. this year by a high school runner.

Girls Lacrosse: Briar Woods SR Lauren LeFebvre to Play at North Carolina Wesleyan

(April 26, 2013) - Briar Woods High School senior Lauren LeFebvre has committed to play women's lacrosse next year at North Carolina Wesleyan College in Rocky Mount.

LeFebvre's commitment brings the Class of 2013 to 128 athletes total. Last year a record 207 athletes committed. In 2011 the number was 145 and in 2010 it was 159.

Boys Basketball: Loudoun Valley's Josh Grimard to Play at Alderson-Broaddus College in West Virginia

(April 26, 2013) - Loudoun Valley High School senior Josh Grimard verbally committed on Wednesday to play basketball next year at NCAA Division II Alderson-Broaddus College in Philippi, WV.

Grimard becomes the sixth area player headed to Alderson-Broaddus next year, second most popular school to continue playing at behind only Christopher Newport (7 total). The others included: Kiley Jacobus (Loudoun County/softball); Darrell Kendrick (Heritage/football); Matt Marroquin (Stone Bridge/football); Ahmad Richardson (Heritage/football); and Trey Taylor (Loudoun County/football).

Softball: Homecoming for Dawson as Stone Bridge Grad Brings Undefeated Madison JV Team to Ashburn

(April 26, 2013) - At 25 years of age it wasn't too long ago that Casey Dawson was attending Homecomings but this evening she will have a different type of Homecoming as the Stone Bridge High School Class of 2005 grad returns to Ashburn as the head coach of the undefeated James Madison High School softball team.

Dawson's Warhawks aren't just 9-0 but they have been rolling, averaging more than 18 runs a game! Dawson's father Glenn says there will be plenty of family and friends on hand for tonight's 6:30 p.m. game.

Dawson graduated from West Virginia with a B.A. in physical education in 2010 and earned her Master's in special education from George Mason last year. She is in her first year of coaching and third year teaching at Madison.

(April 26, 2013) - Earlier this month, Heritage High School boys soccer coach Betsy Munson was honored by the Virginia High School Coaches Association as her current 136 career wins is most all-time by a female coach for men’s soccer in the state of Virginia.

Baseball: Loudoun Valley's Danny White Signs to Play at Trevecca Nazarene in Nashville

(April 26, 2013) - Danny White, a 4-year starter for the Loudoun Valley High School baseball team has signed his letter of intent to play for Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville Tennessee.

Trevecca is a NCAA Division II school which plays in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. White was named All Dulles District last year as a pitcher and outfielder.

News: 17-Year-old Charged in Series of Sugarland Run Exposure Cases

(April 26, 2013) - A 17-year-old male from Sterling, VA, is facing nine charges after he was connected to a series of exposure cases in the Sugarland Run community.

Softball: Real Steele! Broad Run Coach Ed Steele Reaches 400 Win Milestone; Honored Tonight

(April 26, 2013) - The Broad Run High School softball team captured another victory on Monday night, 7-4 over Brentsville District High School. But this wasn’t just another victory for the Spartans as it marked the 400th coaching victory for the Spartans mentor and leader, head coach Ed Steele.

Steel began his softball coaching career in 1992 at Broad Run and has become one of the winningest coaches in Virginia High School history, amassing a 401-103 record -- the team beat Freedom on Tuesday for career win No. 401 -- over 21 seasons at the helm of a successful softball program that he built.

The Spartans will celebrate this milestone win for Steele with a pregame ceremony tonight before their home game against Stonewall Jackson. Former Broad Run players, families and coaches are encouraged to attend this celebration which starts at 5:50 p.m.

Boys Lacrosse: Community Tailgate to Benefit Special Abilities Awareness Week to be Held Prior to Titans vs. Vikes Contest Tonight at Dominion

(April 26, 2013) - It looks like the Viva Loudoun video crew will be packing their bags for Dominion High School tonight as the Titans boys lacrosse game with Loudoun Valley is leading big time in our Game of the Week poll with 723 votes to second place boys soccer between Potomac Falls and Briar Woods (243 votes). It is a big night all around at Dominion with a tailgate from 5 to 7 p.m. celebrating Special Abilities Awareness Week.

The community is invited to enjoy the food for sale (hamburgers, hot dogs, sno-balls) with all proceeds going to benefit Students with Special Abilities. There will also be hands on stations to experience "Walk in My Shoes, Discover My Abilities".

Dominion varsity lacrosse players will be available for lacrosse fun and games until 6 p.m. at the event.

Breaking News: Material from Package Deemed Harmless, Lovettsville Elementary Students Returning to School

(April 26, 2013) - Students at Lovettsville Elementary School are returning to the classroom after a suspicious substance located inside a package was deemed harmless.

The suspicious material was reported shortly before 9 a.m.after school personnel opened a package. Members of the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office and personnel from Loudoun County Fire, Rescue & Emergency Management responded to the scene and deemed the material was harmless.

Emergency personnel are expected to clear the scene shortly.

Girls Lacrosse: Woodgrove Hosts "LAX for LOVE" Tonight at 6 p.m. vs. George Mason

(April 22, 2013) - Woodgrove High School hosts the "LAX for LOVE" girls lacrosse match tonight at 6 p.m. in Purcellville against George Mason.

The LAX for LOVE game is to raise money and awareness for the One Love Foundation. A portion of the ticket sales and t-shirt sales will be donated to the One Love Foundation, established in memory of Yeardley Reynolds Love, a University of Virginia lacrosse players who tragically died in May 2010 as a result of domestic violence.

(April 22, 2013) - Loudoun County High School track and field coach Courtney Campbell reports that former Raiders are doing great in college this spring with Josh Showalter, a freshman at Christopher Newport, qualifying for Junior Nationals in the steeple chase and Tommy Curtin, a sophomore, at Virginia Tech, coming from behind to win the ACC outdoor 5,000 meters with his fist sub-14 time at 13:57. Curtin also won the ACC 5,000 meters indoor title in the winter.

Girls Volleyball: Musical Coaches Continues as Tuscarora's Hermes Shifts to Briar Woods

(April 22, 2013) - For the second time this offseason, a girls volleyball coach in Loudoun has shifted high schools with Tuscarora High School coach Marsha Hermes taking over the Briar Woods program in Ashburn.

(April 22, 2013) - Woodgrove High School junior defensive end J.J. Jackson has verbally committed Sunday to play football at the University of Virginia starting in 2014-15 according to Wolverines coach Mike Skinner. T 6-foot-4, 220-pound Wolverine also had offers from Duke, Hampton, ODU, Ohio University, and Yale.

11 athletes from the Class of 2014 have now committed.
