Boys Basketball: Dulles District Showdown! Potomac Falls and Broad Run Meet Tonight in Ashburn
(Jan. 29, 2010) - The top two Dulles District boys basketball teams and two of the top teams in the state in AA, Potomac Falls and Broad Run, meet tonight in a showdown of one-loss teams in Ashburn.
Potomac Falls (8-0, 15-1) is ranked No. 2 by the Associated Press in the state and Broad Run (6-1, 16-1) is ranked No. 3. The Spartans only loss was a buzzer beater loss at Potomac Falls in December as PF junior Zack Curran fired off a 3-pointer from the corner with less than a second left. The Panthers only loss came to Loudoun Valley the day after a draining triple overtime, 111-108, win over Stone Bridge.
What You Need to Know About Tonight:
Potomac Falls (8-0 in Dulles District, 15-1) at Broad Run (6-1. 16-1), 7:30 p.m.
AP Rankings in AA for the state: PF No. 2, BR No. 3
Can't Make the Game: Verizon FiOS will televise the game next week on delay, Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. and Thursday at 2 p.m. and then the game will be in the On Demand section of your local Verizon FiOS service.
Potomac Falls in Sterling opened in 1997 drawing part of its student body from Broad Run (which opened in 1969) in Ashburn. There has been a healthy rivalry ever since.
Potomac Falls coach: Jeff Hawes ... 13th year, only coach PF has ever had! Panthers were very young last year and started the year 9-2 but struggled at the end, dropping four straight to finish with four straight losses, including quarterfinal losses in the district and regions to end the year, 14-10. Panthers always contend for district titles!
Broad Run: Second-year coach John Costello, who was previously the freshman boys coach and a decade earlier was a varsity assistant, has been on a roll. The Spartans started 11-1 last season and finished 20-6 including a title in the Dulles District tournament but fell in regional semifinals. Costello took over a program that went 7-15 the previous season.

(Jan. 29, 2010) - Big games tonight in Ashburn with the Fox5 TV crew setting up and we aren't even talking about the Potomac Falls vs. Broad Run Dulles District boys basketball showdown.
Fox5 will be at the Langley vs. Stone Bridge boys basketball game in which the Saxons hope to all but wrap up the regular-season title and the Bulldogs look to hand Langley its first district defeat.
At Broad Run, two one-loss teams, ranked No. 2 and No. 3 in the state will square off in one of the biggest Dulles regular-season games since the league was formed a decade ago.

Wrestling: Warren County Duals Canceled, Broad Run to Host Freedom in Monday Afternoon Special
(Jan. 29, 2010) - Broad Run and Freedom were going to officially wrestle their final Dulles District dual meet of the regular season at this weekend's Warren County Duals but the event has been canceled due to incoming weather concerns.
As a result, Broad Run will now host Freedom this Monday at 4:30 p.m.
Also the JV wrestling tournament at Skyline High School scheduled for today and tomorrow has been changed to tonight only tonight.

(Jan. 29, 2010) - When I think of the Freedom vs. Loudoun County girls basketball rivalry and riveting recent series I quite naturally think of the Bakersfield, Calif. Hort Elementary School PTA Haunted House of 1974 and of course the famous Ali vs. Foreman "Rumble in the Jungle" and then again that rusty nail that cut my arm and that Tetanus shot that I really didn't want to get.
Wait! I'm not saying that watching the Eagles and Raiders -- both VHSL state champions last season which is quite mind-boggling -- is a pain ... far from it. It just reminds me of great rivalries that make sports the drama and pleasure that it is.
Dan: please be kind and rewind (does anybody still know what that means!) and what in the world do a PTA Haunted House have to do with basketball in Loudoun!?!
Sorry ... lets go back to almost the start ... great rivalries. I was 11 in 1974 and Oct. 30 was the famous "Rumble in the Jungle" between boxing legends Muhammad Ali and George Foreman (way before he was pitching grills and just plain grilling all comers in the ring). That was the day before Halloween and we were finishing my elementary school's Haunted House (scary!).
Ray Maples my sixth grade teacher and coach in every sport -- this guy was the Amos Alonzo Stagg for elementary school kids in an era when we had after school sports teams in fourth, fifth and sixth grade -- had the radio on to listen to the fight and it was dramatic ... not even the rusty nail could take my attention away from the fight and my shot would have to wait until after Ali's incredible knockout.
And that is what sports is all about to me, just great drama and unscripted events that you not only can't predict but get the joy of watching unfold.

Football: Park View's Tommy Sedeski to Play at Princeton
Sterling (Jan. 29, 2010) - Park View High School senior Tommy Sedeski has committed to become a member of the Princeton University football program next year.
Sedeski will sign a "Likely Letter of Intent" to join the Tigers as a member of the Class of 2014. Like all Ivy League schools, the athletic program at Princeton is a non-scholarship program, yet the National Letter of Intent signing process is the same as any Division I program.

Basketball: Coaches vs. Cancer Scheduled for Varsity Doubleheader at Freedom on Feb. 2
South Riding (Jan. 29, 2010) - The annual Coaches vs. Cancer varsity basketball doubleheader between the Freedom and the Briar Woods high schools will be held on Tuesday, February 2nd, at Freedom High School.
The basketball action starts at 6 p.m. with the girls' basketball game. The boys' game will be at 8 p.m. A pasta dinner, catered by Merone's Buon Appetito, will be held in the cafeteria from 5 to 7 pm. Dinner tickets cost $15 and include admission to both games.
Tickets may be purchased at Freedom High School until Friday, January 29th.

Girls Basketball: Jan. 22-23 Round-up
(Jan. 28, 2010) - Girls basketball went into the midterm exam break with a bang as Freedom and Loudoun County collided in Leesburg with the Raiders defending their home court and tying up the AA Dulles District standings with a 57-40 victory.
Potomac Falls is a firm third and sitting just one game behind the 7-1 leaders with a 6-2 mark. Broad Run has a two-game lead at 4-3 for the fourth seed in the district tournament.
In the Liberty District, Stone Bridge split a pair, dropping a game to Madison that left the Warhawks two games clear of the Bulldogs with five to play. Loudoun Valley did not play in the Cedar Run and maintained a second place spot. Heritage is looking to stay ahead of Battlefield for the fourth spot in the five team district.

The Skinny: Jasmin Jefferies etched her name in the record books as she grabbed 11 rebounds and became the school's all-time leading rebounder with 527 in her career, breaking the mark set by Sara Hibson last season. Jefferies now has 538 rebounds. PF reached 10 wins on the season with Symone Berry scoring 21 points with eight rebounds, four assists and five steals. Rebecca Perez had eight points and eight rebounds to give PF another inside presence.

Park View (4-3) is a comfortable third after back-to-back losses to PF, and Briar Woods sits fourth and is in position to host a district quarterfinal record, even with a 3-5 mark. The rest of the district, Dominion, Freedom and Loudoun County, may be 2-6 but they are all just within one game of catching BW and gaining postseason homecourt advantage.
In the Liberty, Stone Bridge won two games to move to 7-2 in the Liberty, tied with Marshall, and two games behind Langley (9-0) with yet another big showdown in Ashburn Friday, this time at Stone Bridge as the Bulldogs host the first place Saxons at 7:30 p.m.

News: New Tuscarora High School Confirms Burnett as Football Coach, Adds Becky Puterio as XC Coach and Jeff Kaplan as Golf Coach
Leesburg (Jan. 28, 2010) - Tuscarora High School announced Wednesday evening that, as expected, two-time state champion Broad Run High School football coach Mike Burnett has been approved to lead the new Huskies program and the school opening in the fall also added Becky Puterio as cross country coach and Jeff Kaplan as golf coach.According to a release from Tuscarora Athletic Director Derek Farrey: "(Puterio) is extremely excited about developing a new cross country program at Tuscarora High School, and she is looking forward to working with individuals she can develop from elementary school runners into high school athletes."
Puterio is currently as assistant cross country coach at Broad Run High School, where she has been for three years and her husband John Puterio is the wrestling coach. Before that she was an assistant track coach at Potomac Falls High School. She currently coaches "Girls on the Run" at Frances Hazel Reid Elementary School, and has been a volunteer coach with the Loudoun Track and Field club.
As an athlete herself, Puterio ran both cross country and track competitively in high school and college. She was the mile champion on the Massachusetts state championship track team during her senior year of high school, and competed for Mary Washington University during her collegiate years. Puterio currently teaches fifth grade at Frances Hazel Reid elementary school.
According to the release: " Kaplan is very excited and honored to be the inaugural head coach of the Tuscarora High School golf program."
Kaplan has been teaching and coaching for 16 years. He is currently a health and physical education teacher at Smart’s Mill Middle School and helping coach baseball at Heritage High School both located in Leesburg. Although Coach Kaplan has an extensive baseball background (14 years at the high school level), he has a great passion and knowledge for the game of golf. For the past three summers he has worked as a starter/marshall at Raspberry Falls Golf and Hunt and Belmont Country Club.
He graduated from Frostburg State University in 1990 with an exercise physiology degree. At Frostburg he was a member of the baseball, football and rugby teams. Upon graduation, he worked as an assistant Athletic Director/Trainer at Worldgate Athletic club in Herndon. In 1994, he received his health and physical education degree from the University of Maryland. Kaplan resides in Leesburg with his wife Christie, two sons, Brady and Garrett, and daughter, Courtenay.
The news about Burnett leaked out prior to official approval by the school board. According to the release: "He is extremely excited and looking forward to developing a new football program at Tuscarora High School."
Burnett has been coaching football for 12 seasons and prior to taking the job at Tuscarora High School, he served as the head football coach at Broad Run High School and Santa Monica High School in California.
At Broad Run, he led the Spartans to two VHSL Division 4 state championships and leaves the score on a 28-game winning streak while accumulating a record of 43-6. He was named the Washington Redskins Coach of the year in 2008 and the VHSCA AA Coach of the year in 2008 and 2009. He is a graduate of Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine where he played varsity football and basketball and received his law degree from the University of Washington, in Seattle.
Burnett is married to Kimberly Burnett, and has two sons, Jack and Sam.
News: Loudoun County Public Schools Students Rally for Haiti
Loudoun County's school community has been raising funds and awareness in the wake of the January 12th earthquake in Haiti.

Dance: Potomac Falls Dance Team Hip Hops to Second Place at American National Championships
| Sterling (Jan. 28, 2010) - The Potomac Falls High School Dance Team brought home second place for their hip-hop dance routine performed in the National Champion Jazz category of the American National Championships. The dance competition was sponsored by the American Masters National Cheer and Dance Team Competition held January 16th and 17th at the Baltimore Convention Center. |
This is the team's second honor this year. This fall the nine-member team captured first place in jazz and hip-hop as well as the Grand Championship for the highest score of the day at the Manchester Dance Team Invitational held November 14th in Midlothian.
“We are both extremely proud of the job the girls did at Nationals this year,” said Potomac Falls dance team coaches Nicole Jordan, an eighth grade physical education teacher at River Bend Middle School, and Jessica Prevost, a Potomac Falls social sciences teacher. “Their hard work and dedication definitely paid off by winning the title of National Jazz Champion. It was a great experience.”

Ice Hockey Notebook: Undefeated Stone Bridge Faces Briar Woods Friday in Key Match-up
(Jan. 27, 2010) - Currently the only two undefeated teams in the 24-club NVHSL are Stone Bridge (6-0-0) and Woodbridge (5-0-5). The Bulldogs have been crushing the opposition this season, out-scoring teams 56-3. Andrew Baron leads SB with nine goals and 13 assists followed by Anthony Moffa with seven goals and 10 assists.
Stone Bridge skates against Briar Woods (6-1-1) on Friday at 9:30 p.m. at the Ashbun Ice House West with first place on the line in the West Division.
Herndon is 8-1 in the Central Division but lost, 10-1, to Stone Bridge. Woodbridge, always a power, is leading the South and Langley is on top in the North at 7-1.
Stone Bridge finishes the regular season with a stellar schedule with Bishop O'Connell on Jan. 31, Woodbridge on Feb. 5 and then rival Broad Run on Feb. 12.

(Jan. 27, 2010) - Stone Bridge High School, which made it all the way to the VHSL Division 5 title game in December, had two juniors, running back Marcus Harris and defensive back Spenser Rositano, named first team AAA all-state by the Virginia High School Coaches Association.

Football: Broad Run's T.J. Peeler Named AA Player of the Year, Burnett Coach of the Year
(Jan. 27, 2010) - Broad Run High School took home Player of the Year and Coach of the Year honors from the Virginia High School Coaches Association after capturing a second consecutive VHSL Division 4 state title in December with running back T.J. Peeler and departing coach Mike Burnett, who moves to Tuscarora High School in Leesburg next season, being honored.
A total of nine Loudoun players, including five Spartans, two Park View and two Loudoun County players, made either the first or second team.

Wrestling Notebook: Freedom Posts 6-2 Mark at Highly-Competitive Loudoun Valley Duals
(Jan. 27, 2010) - The Freedom High School wrestling team had another strong outing last weekend at the Loudoun Valley Duals. The Eagles improved their overall record to 24-3 with a 6-2 finish over the two day tournament.
This tournament was chalked full of quality AAA programs and the Eagles held their own over the course of the two day event losing only to AAA powerhouse Westfield, and Maryland elite Urbana, who are both ranked as top 10 teams in the Metropolitan Area by the Washington Post.
Though Freedom started out the tournament by dropping consecutive matches -- to first Westfield (49-13) , and then getting edged out by Urbana (37-34) -- the Eagles rebounded by defeating a tough North Stafford team. The North Stafford Match began what was a six match run for the Eagles, culminating in a 57-12 Victory over Heritage.

(Jan. 27, 2010) - Area swim teams were busy over last weekend as they prepare to wrap up the dual meet season this coming weekend and then head into district swim meets.
In the Dulles District the Briar Woods girls and Broad Run boys continued their unbeaten seasons. In the Cedar Run, weather forced a Heritage vs. Loudoun Valley rematch after Prince William teams couldn't travel with the Pride sweeping the Vikes for a second straight week.
And int terms of sweeps, that is all there was with Briar Woods sweeping Dominion, Freedom over George Mason, Potomac Falls over Loudoun County, Broad Run over Park View and McLean over Stone Bridge.

Cross Country: Former Handley Coach, Current Valley Assistant Scott Burns to Lead New Woodgrove Program
Purcellville (Jan. 27, 2010) - Former Handley High School head cross country coach and current Loudoun Valley assistant, Scott Burns, will lead Woodgrove High School's cross country program when the new school opens this coming fall.
Burns, a physical education teacher at Farmwell Middle School in Ashburn, was approved as the Wolverines first XC coach at last night's Loudoun County Public School's board meeting.
Burns comes to Woodgrove after serving as the head cross country Coach at Handley High School for 14 years. He has led his teams to one state championship (1993), one state runner-up (1990) and four top five finishes at the state meet (1992, 1998, 1999, 2000).
Currently Burns serves as an assistant coach at Loudoun Valley High School. He will hold an informational meeting for students interested in cross country at Woodgrove High School in the near future. Please check the Woodgrove Athletic website for updated information.

Gymnastics Notebook: Loudoun County Captures Aloha Festival Gold Division; Stone Bridge Scores Big with Return of Tori Severin
(Jan. 27, 2010) - The Loudoun County High School gymnastics team captured the Aloha Festival Gold Division title Saturday at Stonewall Jackson and earlier in the week, Stone Bridge High School scored the area's top team score of the season with a 140.550 with the help of Tori Severin who returned from a month-long ankle injury to score 9.5 on the beam.

News: Snowstorm Due Saturday, Freedom Moves up Girls Basketball Game vs. Robinson to Friday
(Jan. 27, 2010) - A potentially winter snowstorm is due to hit Loudoun Saturday, and just in case, at least one scheduled Saturday game has been pushed up to Friday.
The Freedom High School varsity girls basketball game vs. Robinson scheduled for Sat. Jan. 30 has been moved to Fri. Jan. 29 at 6:30 p.m. The game will be played at Freedom High School.
"This change was made in an attempt to be proactive and not force any cancellation due to bad weather," Freedom Athletic Director Matt Oblas said Wednesday in an email.
The Freedom freshmen girls basketball game vs. Paul VI scheduled for Saturday will not be played and will be rescheduled at a later date.
Forecasts for Saturday are calling for a high of 27 degrees, a low of 16 degrees, and 70 percent chance of periods of snow.

(Jan. 27, 2010) - As if the clean sweep in November's Virginia High School League volleyball state finals wasn't enough -- with Loudoun County winning its third straight AA title and Loudoun Valley taking the AAA title -- it was "All Loudoun" in the Virginia High School Coaches Association all-state awards with Raider Julianne Hanna and Viking Morgan Clark Players of the Year and Raider coach Jarod Brown and Viking coach Laird Johnson Coaches of the Year.

(Jan. 27, 2010) - Loudoun will be represented in the next month's 2010 Vancouver Olympics as 16-year-old Hamilton, Va. native Ashley Caldwell has made the U.S. freestyle team.
Caldwell is a former gymnasts who used to compete for APEX Gymnastics locally. Caldwell has been skiing since she was 3 and started freestyle aerial skiing when she was 13. Read a feature on her from Jason S. Rufner in the Loudoun Times-Mirror from 2008 that details her path to the sport .
Caldwell is the first athlete from the the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association's Elite Air Program to qualify for the Olympics. She did well at the Olympic Trials and then earned her spot on the roster for Vancouver by finishing 10th and 13th in a pair of World Cup events earlier this month.

News: VHSL Redistricting and Reclassification Committee Acts Upon Alignment Plan Appeals
Charlottesville (Jan. 26, 2010) - There were winners and losers on Tuesday off the field as the Virginia High School League's Redistricting and Reclassification committee heard modification appeals to the 2011-12 and 2012-14 alignment plan.
Those that had their appeals denied, including schools that play in AA Region II and AAA Northwest Region which includes Loudoun schools, will have another opportunity to appeal as the committee will meet April 19 to consider final appeals. After acting on appeals, the committee will present its final plan with justification for Executive Committee approval in May.
Highlighted below are the appeals that affect regions where Loudoun schools play
Group A modification requests and decision:
Stonewall Jackson (Q) requested assignment to Shenandoah District rather than the Bull Run District -- (Approved).
Bluestone requested assignment to James River District, Region B, Group A, rather than Southside District, Region I, Group AA – (Approved).

Girls Basketball: Top Two Area Teams Clash Tonight in Leesburg
Leesburg (Jan. 22, 2010) - Two programs that have done but win the past couple of seasons will meet tonight at 7:45 p.m. as Loudoun County hosts Freedom in a key AA Dulles District girls basketball contest.
A win would put Freedom on the path to a second straight regular season title and the Raiders can tie the Eagles if they defend their home court. Both teams won VHSL state titles last year -- Freedom in Division 3 and Loudoun County in Division 4. This year only one can win a state title as they both compete in Division 4.
The boys/girls doubleheader starts with the boys at 6 p.m. The girls game will be televised by Verizon FiOS1. Both games will be aired on the Internet by the Loudoun County High School Athletic Booster Club (www.lchsabc.org)

Gymnastics: Loudoun Valley Tops Battlefield in Cedar Run Quad; Spotts 9.65 on Beam, Huebner 9.50 on Floor
(Jan. 22, 2010) - Led by Shae Spotts with a 9.65 on the Beam and Amanda Huebner with a 9.5 on the floor, Loudoun Valley edged Battlefield Wednesday in a AAA Cedar Run District quad meet in Purcellville.
The Vikings scored a season-best 136.45 with Battlefield right behind with 133.3. Stonewall Jackson was third at 95.65 and Osbourn scored 40.8.
The 9.65 for Spotts on the beam was the top mark of any gymnast in the county this season and Huebner's 9.5 on the floor tied the mark turned in by Potomac Falls' Allie Daczkowski this week.

Basketball: Heritage Games with Battlefield Tonight Postponed; Make-ups Cancelled Planned Stone Bridge Meetings
Leesburg (Jan. 22, 2010) - The Heritage High School boys and girls basketball games with Battlefield have been postponed tonight and the make-up will be Feb. 8. The planned Heritage vs. Stone Bridge Feb. 8 games have been cancelled and will not be made up.
Also the Cedar Run swim meets planned for Friday have been reshuffled with the Loudoun Valley vs. Osbourn and Heritage vs. Battlefield meets postponed and instead the Vikings and Pride will swim at 7 p.m. at Ida Lee against each other.
