Boys Basketball Roundup: Jan. 22-23 Games

(Jan. 28, 2010) - The area boys basketball teams headed the midterm exam break with action last Friday and Saturday that left the Dulles District and Liberty District up in the air.

In the Dulles, Potomac Falls (8-0 in district) won twice and Broad Run (6-1) won Saturday to remain at the top of the standings and set up Friday's big showdown in Ashburn when the Spartans will host the Panthers at 7:30 p.m. with first place on the line.

Park View (4-3) is a comfortable third after back-to-back losses to PF, and Briar Woods sits fourth and is in position to host a district quarterfinal record, even with a 3-5 mark. The rest of the district, Dominion, Freedom and Loudoun County, may be 2-6 but they are all just within one game of catching BW and gaining postseason homecourt advantage.

In the Liberty, Stone Bridge won two games to move to 7-2 in the Liberty, tied with Marshall, and two games behind Langley (9-0) with yet another big showdown in Ashburn Friday, this time at Stone Bridge as the Bulldogs host the first place Saxons at 7:30 p.m.

In the Cedar Run District, neither Heritage or Loudoun Valley played and both teams -- Pride at 0-4 and Vikes at 1-4 -- are fighting it out for the fourth and final spot in the Cedar Run tournament in the five-team district.

The Skinny: Stone Bridge's four seniors -- Sam Tripp, James Wells, Philip Nowakowski and Richie Berry -- scored 18 of the Bulldogs 19 points in the third quarter as SB pulled away for the win.

Potomac Falls 65, Briar Woods 52
The Skinny: Myles Tate score 27 against the Panthers but Potomac Falls avoided the "trap game" of looking ahead to Friday's match-up with Broad Run. Lukas Mihailovich had 20 for PF and Pete Simoneau added 10.

Broad Run 71, Dominion 44
The Skinny: Kevin McGaughey and Taylor Johnson both scored 18 points as the Spartans ran away from the Titans.

Park View 67, Kettle Run 62
The Skinny: The Patriots avenged a season-opening loss to Kettle Run with Ryan McCarter scoring 23 and Jordan Ownes (16 points) and J.R. Shooks (12 points) each hitting double digits.

Stone Bridge 69, TJ 59
The Skinny: TJ came in on a 2-game winning streak in district but Nik Brown started off red-hot for SB, knocking down seven of his first eight shots including four from behind the arc. Brown had 20 points at halftime but picked up his fourth foul early in the third quarter and sat for the rest of the quarter. Brown (28 points) and Richie Berry (23 points) combined for 51 of the 69 Bulldog points. Kyle Gouveia led SB with seven rebounds, four steals, and one block, while Sam Tripp grabbed six rebounds.

Heritage at Battlefield PPD 
The Skinny: This game was PPD because of weather conditions in Prince William and will be made up on Feb. 8 -- the SB vs. Heritage game, already a make-up on that night (!) may not be rescheduled.

Loudoun County 55, Freedom 41
The Skinny: This boys game may have been the warm-up to the big girls game but it was entertaining with Calle Brown scoring 15 points with 10 rebounds, five blocks and a dunk. Worth Mays also scored 16 for LC.

The Skinny: Playing for the second time in three days, it was just about the same result as PF put away a pesky PV squad. Lukas Mihailovich and Brendon Chesson combined for 43 for PF and Ryan McCarter scored 25 for the Pats.
