Wrestling Notebook: Freedom Wins First Ever District Title; Exciting Dulles Matches; More!

(Jan. 20, 2010)- Millbrook High School may have gotten its revenge on Freedom, by winning the Eagles Duals on Saturday a week after Freedom stole the show at Millbrook's own event, but that couldn't dampen the program's mood as a 70-6 victory over Loudoun County on Tuesday wrapped up not only the school's first ever AA Dulles District regular season title but the Eagles first district title in any boys sport since the South Riding school opened in 2005.

In other action, Potomac Falls, battling all kinds of injuries was able to come away with two Dulles District wins on Monday night by the thinnest of margins, a 34-32 win over Broad Run, and a win on a tiebreaker -- going all the way down to the 8th criteria -- in a 37-37 match with Park View. The Patriots were able to defeat the Spartans on the night, 44-32.

"The match against Park View was settled by criteria H (the 8th criteria on the list to break a tie ... "team that scored the most first points")," said Potomac Falls coach Mike Grafton. "Both matches were determined by the final match. In the win against Broad Run, Batchka Zuhlkuu sealed the win for the Panthers, by beating Dennis Murray in overtime. In the win against Park View, Mike Oswald, the team captain, needed a fall at 140 just to get the team score to a tie. He did so and the match was decided by the tie-breaker system. I take my hat off to both teams. They wrestled well."

Starters not wrestling for the Panthers included Chris Belin, Joe Thomas, and Zack Duffin.

In Freedom's win Tuesday, Levi Hamm (103) and Chuong Le (119)( started off the night for the Eagles after a forfeit at 285 by County to DaQuante Timbers. Both Hamm and Le avenged losses from a week ago at the Millbrook invitational by pinning their opponents in the second period. Le's victory over County's Tyler Anthony, who finished 5th in the State in 2009, could bring a lot of interest to a potential District Finals match up in two weeks.

Wrestling well for County were Kenton Perez and David Richardson, who both were winners for the Raiders.

Also congratulations to Loudoun County 119-pounder Tyler Anthony who notched career win No. 100 last week and placed second at the very competitive Super 32 meet at Riverbend.

Freedom Runner-up at Own Duals to Millbrook
The 2nd Annual Freedom Duals was a huge success filled with a lot of exciting wrestling. Sixteen teams took to the mat this Saturday and at the end of the day it was a rematch of the top two teams from the Winchester Elks Tournament a week ago. This time it was the defending Region II Champion's in Millbrook who came away with the championship trophy. The Pioneers won the tournament by knocking off the upstart Freedom team 46-27 in the finals, dropping their record to 17-1 on the season.

The Freedom team started off the day well by scoring a convincing 66-12 win over Park View in Dulles District action.

Riverbend's Super 32 Results
Loudoun County's Tyler Anthony placed second at the Super 32, and lost a nailbiter in the finals, 5-4 to Maximo of Manassas Park.

Also for LC, Kenton Perez took a 7th place.
