Basketball: Saturday Stone Bridge Sweeps Puts Girls in First, Boys in Second in Liberty District

Ashburn (Jan. 11, 2010) - The Stone Bridge High School boys and girls basketball teams have combined for their best starts ever in the AAA Liberty District with the Bulldog girls tied for first and the Bulldog boys tied for second after a Saturday night varsity doubleheader sweep at home against James Madison.

The girls 51-41 win over the Warhawks handed Madison its first district defeat and knotted up the standings with four teams -- Stone Bridge, Madison, Langley and South Lakes -- all sitting at 3-1. Overall the SB girls are 9-2.

Stone Bridge took over the contest with a big 21-8 advantage in the second quarter. Also impressive was that even though SB experienced foul trouble with some starters, others stepped up including freshman Murielle Tiernan who had 11 points, five rebounds and four steals off the bench.

The Bulldogs shot 46 percent from the floor in the win. Sakai Williams contributed 10 points and, according to SB coach Chris Jones, Kayleigh Guzek had a good all around game as the team's floor leader.

Boys: Stone Bridge 62, Madison 44
Stone Bridge used a suffocating defense to defeat Madison easily Saturday and move three games above .500 on the season at 7-4 and into a tie for second place in the Liberty District at 3-1.
Nik Brown and Richie Berry, SB's super quick guard tandem slashed their way for a combined 44 points and Kyle Gouveia provided a spark off the bench as the Bulldogs broke open a tie game (14-14) to take an 11-point halftime lead (35-24).

Brown also grabbed eight rebounds and had six steals. Gouveia picked up three steals, three assists, and six boards.
