Boys Basketball: Tues. Jan. 5 Round-up - Briar Woods, Broad Run, Potomac Falls Grab Dulles District Wins

Postgame chat with Briar Woods sophomores Correy Faciane and Myles Tate, who combined for 36 points in a 61-19 win over Freedom Tuesday

(Jan. 6, 2010) - Briar Woods High School shot lights out Tuesday night with eight 3-pointers in a big win over rival Freedom and in other AA Dulles District action, the top two teams, Broad Run and Potomac Falls, kept pace with wins. In the AAA Cedar Run, both Heritage and Loudoun Valley opened district play with losses.

Potomac Falls 65, Dominion 58
Lukas Mihailovich, who scored a school-record 50 points in a game earlier this season, dropped 27 points Tuesday as the Panthers improved to 3-0 in the Dulles District and 8-1 overall in a rivalry game played before packed student sections at Dominion High School.

Brendan Chesson added 12 for PF. DeAndre Reaves and Andre Evans combined for 32 of Dominion's 58 points. The Titans, last year's district regular-season champs, fall to 1-3 and 1-10.

PF was up 20-9 in the game but Reaves and Evans treys led to a 13-2 run to tie it at 22. PF got big baskets from Mihailovich, Chesson and Mickey Wagenhoffer and went 15 of 20 from the line in the second half for the win.

Mihailovich also had six rebounds and three assists and Chesson had seven assists.

Potomac Falls 65, Dominion 58

Broad Run 72, Park View 59
The Spartans kept pace with Potomac Falls with this win that improved their record to 2-1 and 10-1. This game was a 3-point affair until Broad Run out-scored Park View, 22-12, in the final quarter.

Kevin McGaughey knocked down four 3-pointers and scored a game-high 24 points. Taylor Johnson and Ahmad Zafar each scored 12 for BR.

The Patriots were led by Ryan McCarter with 17 and J.R. Shooks scored 14. PV slipped to 1-1 and 5-4 on the season.

Briar Woods 61, Freedom 19
This game was all Falcons as Briar Woods blizted rival Freedom.

Sophomore Correy Faciane and Myles Tate combined for 36 points and seven 3-pointers with Faciane hitting five 3-pointers.

Briar Woods, forcing turnovers with pressure defense, led Freedom 26-9 at the half.

BW improves to 2-2 and 5-5 and Freedom falls to 1-2 and 2-10.

Battlefield 60, Heritage 36
The Pride, playing for the first time since before the big snowstorm in mid-December, dropped their first ever AAA Cedar Run boys basketball game Tuesday night.

Ross Alcorn led Heritage with 12 points -- all on 3-point baskets.

After scoring 17 points in the first quarter, Heritage scored just 19 the rest of the way including only three in the second quarter as Battlefield opened a 29-20 halftime lead. The Pride's rust showed at the foul line where they went 4 of 12.

The Pride fall to 0-1 and 2-4.
