The Skinny: Vikes fall to 2-3 on season with non-district loss.

The Skinny: Bulldogs even Liberty District mark at 1-1 and improve to 2-1-2 on the season. Michael Morningstar scored twice and Ryan Buckley and Danny Carmona added goals for SB. Auguste Spencer had two assists on the night, while Tommy Dunne and Tyler Bavis also contributed an assist each in the win. Bulldog keeper Abe Yoslov earned his second straight shutout. South Lakes keeper Kevin Cronin had five saves on the evening. Stone Bridge out shot South lakes 9-3 and the Bulldogs earned three corner kicks to South Lakes' one. Next game for Stone Bridge will on Friday, April 1 at James Madison. The JV boys will play at 5:30 and the varsity will kick off at 7.

The Skinny: Sophomore Ashley Herndon set the school record for goals in a single game with five in the victory and she had an assist to boot. Sophomore Murielle Tiernan added a goal and two assists. Gracie DeGooyer had two crosses to assist Herndon and senior Lindsay Andersen added the last assist of the night. Goalkeeper Julia Harmison had her second shutout of the season. Stats:

The Skinny: Falcons bounce back from that long extra-inning loss to Broad Run .
Broad Run 7, Potomac Falls 1
The Skinny: The Spartans hand the Panthers their second loss on the season after two straight unbeaten campaigns in the Dulles District. BR sits alone at the top of the standings with Freedom falling against Woodgrove tonight. Sophomore AJ Powell threw a complete game on the mound for the Spartans to improve his record to 2-0 on the season. Powell's mark of 2-0 matches his record from a year ago. Powell struck out 8 Panther hitters on the night; he allowed 3 hits, 2 walks, and one unearned run. Seven different Spartans scored on the evening in a very balanced offensive attack. Broad Run pushed across 5 runs in the bottom of the first inning to build an early lead from the start. The team was led by Senior Nick Richardson (2 hits, 2 RBI, SB), Junior Conor Jessop (2 doubles), and Junior Andrew Seigel (single, 2 BB's, 2 SB).
Woodgrove 6, Freedom 4
The Skinny: The Woodgrove Wolverines picked up their second league victory of the season by defeating the previously undefeated Freedom Eagles. Scott Van Steelent picked up his second win of the season pitching 5 1/3 innings of 1 hit baseball. Van Steelent tallied 8 strikeouts without walking a batter. Van Steelent and J.J. Sarty led the Wolverines offensive attack picking up 2 hits a piece.

The Skinny: Raiders take first ever meeting between two Leesburg schools.
Raiders report that: The Raiders slugged out 13 hits, five for extra bases, highlighted by a walk off home run to beat new Dulles District foe, Tuscarora, 13-3 in 5 innings. The win evened the Raiders' district record at 2-2 and their overall record improves to 4-2. The Raiders got on the board in the first inning as Stephen Veschi walked to lead off the inning. Nick Fischer then hit a single and Tyler Saleck followed up with an RBI single. Matt Slack then sacrificed Fischer in for the second run. The Raiders added another run in the 2nd inning when Collin Dillon led the inning off with a single, then advanced to second on a walk to Taylor Cokeley. Jake Wright then hit an RBI single. The Raiders erupted with seven runs off of six hits in the 3rd inning. A lead off single by Kris Pratt and a walk by Slack, allowed Ethan Carlyon to hit an RBI single. Dillon then hit the first of two Raider triples in the game. Dillon scored on a fielder's choice by Cokeley. Wright smashed a double to start the base runners again. Followed up by a walk to Veschi, Fischer hit an RBI single to center field. Saleck got on base by a fielder's choice. Pratt came up for the second time in the inning and smashed his 6th double of the year, this one good for 2 RBIs. Pratt was effective on the mound, holding the Huskies hitless and scoreless for 4 innings. Tuscarora put 3 runs over the plate in the top of the fifth inning. The Raiders put Tuscarora away for good in the bottom of the fifth. Substitute Aaron Orrison hit a bunt single, then advanced to 3rd base by stealing a base and a past-ball. Substitute Zach Ballinger knocked in Orrison on a triple to right-center field. Then, Pratt ended the game by shooting a 2-run home run over the left field fence.
Huskies report that: For the second game in a row, the Huskies’ previously reliable starting pitching could not stave off an opponent’s offensive. It seemed at first that the Huskies were on their way to being shut out for a third straight game as the revamped Tuscarora lineup went hitless through the first four innings. Down 10-0 after three innings, the Huskies continued to battle until their bats showed signs of life in the fifth. After centerfielder Dalton Scanlon led off the inning by reaching base on an error and second baseman Travis Burke walked, reliever Ian Anderson loaded the bases with a single to left and left fielder Brady Kaplan followed with an RBI single to right. Shortstop Bernie Mayflower drove in two more with a double down the right field line, making it three hits in a row and three Tuscarora runs on the board. The Huskies couldn’t sustain the rally, though, and ended the frame with the bases loaded. In the bottom half of the inning the Raiders answered with three more runs and brought down the curtain on the Huskies’ evening.

The Skinny: Spenser Rostitano walk off single scores Tyler Mocabee from second base in the bottom of the eighth for Bulldogs in big Liberty District win.

Broad Run 9, Potomac Falls 8
The Skinny: Spartans bounce back after 10-0 loss Monday to Woodgrove and hand Panthers first Dulles District loss on season. BR led 7-0 but gave up eight runs in the 6th inning, only to score a run in the 6th to tie and then win it in the bottom of the 7th!
Panthers report: After loading the bases in the top of the first inning on three consecutive singles, Spartans pitcher Ashley Ferrara got out of the inning without giving up a run and held the Panthers scoreless through the first five innings. The Spartans scored two runs in the 2nd, two unearned runs in the 3rd, a run in the 4th, and two more in the 5th inning. The Panthers led off the 6th inning with freshman Tiffany Barndt (2-4, run) singling to left field before the Spartans made a pitching change. After the next two batters were hit by pitches, the next six Panthers put the ball in play. Junior Peyton Valentine (1-4, run, 2 RBIs) singled down the right field line to score two runs, followed by senior Katlyn McClung (1-2, run, RBI) with an infield single, and senior Kayla Guttridge's (2-4, run 2 RBIs) 2-run double to right center before the Spartans put Ferrara back into pitch up 7-5. But the Panthers continued to hit - junior Caitie McClay (2-4) singled up the middle, sophomore Anna Zembar (1-4, run, RBI) hit a line drive single down the third base line scoring a run. After a fielder's choice and groundout, junior Lauren Fulcher (1-3, run) hit the ball to third which resulted in a two-run throwing error gving the Panthers the lead 8-7. Broad Run came back with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning after a walk and double by Jenny Kramer (2-4), a runner thrown out at the plate on a fielder's choice, before Holly Vizek (3-4) singled home the tying run. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Maggie Betz (2-4) singled up the middle, McKall Miller (1-5) hit into a fielder's choice, and advanced to second on a throwing error before Kate Sims (3-5) hit a walk-off single up the middle scoring the winning run. Senior Heather Kiefer took the loss for the Panthers.
Woodgrove 13, Freedom 2 (5)
The Skinny: With five wins behind them, the Wolverines were ready to take some chances when they faced Freedom Tuesday night at Woodgrove field. Sophomore Alexa Hillyard had her first start as a varsity pitcher and Rachel Harris stepped in as catcher. The team hardly missed a beat as they put away the Eagles in five innings. The hits started early with Courtney Bogan and Ashley Cole both hitting singles. This set the stage for Christy Haney’s single which brought in Bogan to score the first run. With Cole in scoring position, Delanie Daughtry brought her home with another strong single, and Harris followed with a single to bring home Haney for the third run. Hillyard’s hit deep into centerfield was too much for the Eagles outfield when the ball was dropped and Daughtry and Harris were able to come home. After Katie Sholl was walked, Amanda Rathjen came home on a passed ball, and that was enough to end the first inning 6-0. Freedom was able to find a weak spot in the Wolverines’ defense when the first three batters in the second inning loaded the bases and the sixth batter, Tsitos, brought home Villagomez to score the first run for the Eagles. The Wolverines were able to score a seventh run when Cole was walked, stole second and third base, and came home on an Alaina Furr double. The second inning ended with a score of 7-1. The third inning saw more Eagles on base. McGrady scored the only run after hitting a single and being advanced by Johnson, Snyder, and Muller. Woodgrove was unable to keep the runs coming and the inning ended 7-2. Freedom’s first three batters of the fourth inning met with strong defensive plays from the Wolverines, especially McGrady’s line drive to right field which was ably snagged by Mackenzie Moler. The Woodgrove scoring drive began when Bogan and Cole were walked and brought home by a double from Haney. Furr singled and brought in Haney, Daughtry singled and brought in Furr, and Harris singled and brought home Daughtry to score the 12th run. The last run of the inning was scored by Harris when a single by Hillyard brought her home. The top half of the fifth inning offered the Eagles a last chance to score, but they were unable to get a run. The game ended with a score of 13-2.
Loudoun County 11, Tuscarora 0 (5)
The Skinny: The Raiders improved to 3-1 in the Dulles District and 5-1 with a 14-hit night against the neighboring Huskies. Kiley Jacobus (3-3, 2 runs, rbi), Cortni Reitz (2-3, 2rbi, run, sb, sac), and Erin Ertel (2-3, 2 runs, rbi) had multiple hits for the Raiders. Kelley Duerbeck (1-2, 3 rbi, 2 runs, 2b, sac), Renay Aubel (1-2, 2 runs, bb), Katelyn Packard (1-3, rbi), Courtney Amos (1-2, 2 runs), Sarah Fadeley (1-1, rbi), Alison Coates (1-3), and Laura Mills (1-1) also added hits for the Raiders. Kiley Jacobus (4 inn., 4 k, 2 hits, bb) and Valerie Evans (1 inn., k, bb,) combined on the 2 hit shut out with Jacobus picking up the win.
Dominion 12, Manassas Park 1
The Skinny: Claire Drew records 9 strikeouts (and has allowed only one earned run in the last three games) as the Titan's beat Manassas Park. Brittanne Gasser had back-to-back home runs.
Stone Bridge 4, Madison 1
The Skinny: Stone Bridge played tough defense, holding Madison to one earned even though they had baserunners every inning. Allie Brill pitched through 4 innings, and Kelly McDaniel took over for the last 3. For the second night in a row, the Bulldogs faced strong pitching and managed to get the runs across the plate when they needed to. Offensive leaders were RF Courtney Gibson (3-4, run), 2B Niki Prince (2-4, run, 2 RBIs), 3B Olivia Tatara (2-3, RBI), and LF Erin Dzurilla (2-3, run). SS Cori Prince had a hit and scored a run, and C Beth Lewis had a SAC bunt and a SAC RBI. Next up for the Lady Bulldogs is Fairfax away on Friday, April 1.

The Skinny: Falcons report: The Patriots started strong and equaled the Falcons' energy in early play before Marchelle Davis fired a BOOM of a shot high into the right corner of Park View’s net from 20 yards out. Park View answered with a nice approach and solid goal from Alison Kuhn to tie the game 1–1. Briar Woods scored again before half when sophomore Davis slid a ball past the Patriot’s goalkeeper to make it a 2-1 game. Briar Woods’ halftime talk lit a fuse that ignited in a third goal for "Shell" Davis in the opening minute of the second half. Alexis Jensen joined in the frenzy with the second BOOM of the night when she fired a strike for a 4–1 lead. Davis capped her productive night with a career high 4th goal. Falcons captain Morgan McCarthy finished the scoring frenzy by evading two defenders and firing a rocket from the top of the box. Park View’s strong midfield created some dangerous moments for the Falcons with through-balls but once again the Woods’ defense held. The Falcons back three, led by sophomore Tori Panzica with freshmen Kira Warner and Alexis Haycraft, protected their keeper allowing only 7 shots on goal. Keeper Cloe Barnes had 6 saves.
Broad Run 3, Potomac Falls 0
The Skinny: Another shutout for Spartans who have yet to allow a goal this year. Led by sophomore Cassie Smith's two goals, the Spartans -- 3-time defending state champion --extended its winning streak to 19 games. Smith scored early in the first half on a pass from senior Ellie Zoepfl. Six minutes into the 2nd half, Smith got in front of the goal to receive a cross from junior Darbie Kelley for her second goal of the night. The final goal came from sophomore Christie Belz. The defense, led by seniors Kacey Kelley and Brooke Collins, juniors Erin Brady and Chelsea Davis and sophomore Katie Pieper have not allowed a goal on the season.

The Skinny: Eagles only loss on season was in OT to Loudoun County.
Woodgrove reports scoring as: Freedom - Courtney O'Connell (2); Woodgrove - Tabitha McHale with assist from Sarah Hardison. Several excellent saves by WG keeper Addie Healy.

Sophomore Alexa Hillyard had her first start as a varsity pitcher and Rachel Harris stepped in as catcher. The team hardly missed a beat as they put away the Eagles in five innings. The hits started early with Courtney Bogan and Ashley Cole both hitting singles. This set the stage for Christy Haney’s single which brought in Bogan to score the first run. With Cole in scoring position, Delanie Daughtry brought her home with another strong single, and Harris followed with a single to bring home Haney for the third run. Hillyard’s hit deep into centerfield was too much for the Eagles outfield when the ball was dropped and Daughtry and Harris were able to come home. After Katie Sholl was walked, Amanda Rathjen came home on a passed ball, and that was enough to end the first inning 6-0. Freedom was able to find a weak spot in the Wolverines’ defense when the first three batters in the second inning loaded the bases and the sixth batter, Tsitos, brought home Villagomez to score the first run for the Eagles. The Wolverines were able to score a seventh run when Cole was walked, stole second and third base, and came home on an Alaina Furr double. The second inning ended with a score of 7-1. The third inning saw more Eagles on base. McGrady scored the only run after hitting a single and being advanced by Johnson, Snyder, and Muller. Woodgrove was unable to keep the runs coming and the inning ended 7-2. Freedom’s first three batters of the fourth inning met with strong defensive plays from the Wolverines, especially McGrady’s line drive to right field which was ably snagged by Mackenzie Moler. The Woodgrove scoring drive began when Bogan and Cole were walked and brought home by a double from Haney. Furr singled and brought in Haney, Daughtry singled and brought in Furr, and Harris singled and brought home Daughtry to score the 12th run. The last run of the inning was scored by Harris when a single by Hillyard brought her home. The top half of the fifth inning offered the Eagles a last chance to score, but they were unable to get a run. The game ended with a score of 13-2.

The Skinny: The Raiders improved to 3-1 in the Dulles District and 5-1 with a 14-hit night against the neighboring Huskies. Kiley Jacobus (3-3, 2 runs, rbi), Cortni Reitz (2-3, 2rbi, run, sb, sac), and Erin Ertel (2-3, 2 runs, rbi) had multiple hits for the Raiders. Kelley Duerbeck (1-2, 3 rbi, 2 runs, 2b, sac), Renay Aubel (1-2, 2 runs, bb), Katelyn Packard (1-3, rbi), Courtney Amos (1-2, 2 runs), Sarah Fadeley (1-1, rbi), Alison Coates (1-3), and Laura Mills (1-1) also added hits for the Raiders. Kiley Jacobus (4 inn., 4 k, 2 hits, bb) and Valerie Evans (1 inn., k, bb,) combined on the 2 hit shut out with Jacobus picking up the win.

The Skinny: Claire Drew records 9 strikeouts (and has allowed only one earned run in the last three games) as the Titan's beat Manassas Park. Brittanne Gasser had back-to-back home runs.
Stone Bridge 4, Madison 1
The Skinny: Stone Bridge played tough defense, holding Madison to one earned even though they had baserunners every inning. Allie Brill pitched through 4 innings, and Kelly McDaniel took over for the last 3. For the second night in a row, the Bulldogs faced strong pitching and managed to get the runs across the plate when they needed to. Offensive leaders were RF Courtney Gibson (3-4, run), 2B Niki Prince (2-4, run, 2 RBIs), 3B Olivia Tatara (2-3, RBI), and LF Erin Dzurilla (2-3, run). SS Cori Prince had a hit and scored a run, and C Beth Lewis had a SAC bunt and a SAC RBI. Next up for the Lady Bulldogs is Fairfax away on Friday, April 1.

The Skinny: Falcons report: The Patriots started strong and equaled the Falcons' energy in early play before Marchelle Davis fired a BOOM of a shot high into the right corner of Park View’s net from 20 yards out. Park View answered with a nice approach and solid goal from Alison Kuhn to tie the game 1–1. Briar Woods scored again before half when sophomore Davis slid a ball past the Patriot’s goalkeeper to make it a 2-1 game. Briar Woods’ halftime talk lit a fuse that ignited in a third goal for "Shell" Davis in the opening minute of the second half. Alexis Jensen joined in the frenzy with the second BOOM of the night when she fired a strike for a 4–1 lead. Davis capped her productive night with a career high 4th goal. Falcons captain Morgan McCarthy finished the scoring frenzy by evading two defenders and firing a rocket from the top of the box. Park View’s strong midfield created some dangerous moments for the Falcons with through-balls but once again the Woods’ defense held. The Falcons back three, led by sophomore Tori Panzica with freshmen Kira Warner and Alexis Haycraft, protected their keeper allowing only 7 shots on goal. Keeper Cloe Barnes had 6 saves.

The Skinny: Another shutout for Spartans who have yet to allow a goal this year. Led by sophomore Cassie Smith's two goals, the Spartans -- 3-time defending state champion --extended its winning streak to 19 games. Smith scored early in the first half on a pass from senior Ellie Zoepfl. Six minutes into the 2nd half, Smith got in front of the goal to receive a cross from junior Darbie Kelley for her second goal of the night. The final goal came from sophomore Christie Belz. The defense, led by seniors Kacey Kelley and Brooke Collins, juniors Erin Brady and Chelsea Davis and sophomore Katie Pieper have not allowed a goal on the season.

Swim: Loudoun Valley's Kelsey Ryan to Swim with NCAA Division I George Mason
(Mar. 30, 2011) - Loudoun Valley High School senior Kelsey Ryan, two-time Cheers Sports and VivaLoudoun Athlete of the Month this winter, announced this week that she will attend and swim with NCAA Division I George Mason University in the fall.
Ryan just missed the finals at the AAA state meet in the 100 fly with a 17th place in the prelims but she took 10th in the 100 back with a 1:07.19.

Cross Country: Joe Cassella 5K Scheduled for May 15 in Great Falls

The Joe Cassella Foundation is a non-profit organization based out of Leesburg with a mission to offer financial assistance to the families of less fortunate children affected by a medical condition, to reduce the stress of financial concerns related to serious illness and injury, and allow them to better focus on supporting their child.
This year, the race will benefit Gracie Sweet, a 16-month old baby who has an inoperable brain tumor, and the funds raised will be used to cover her medical expenses. The 5K Run/Walk is expected to draw 1,000 participants from the Washington DC Metro area, who will gather for a great cause and enjoy a day of fitness and fun.
Deadline to help sponsor the race has been extended until April 22.
The race will feature:
•ChronoTrack race timing system with the disposable D-tag on an USATF certified course
·One-mile fun run for kids

The Old Dominion Football Club squad, based in South Riding, went 3-0-1 in the tournament. Seneca Hall was named MVP, and scored 10 goals on the weekend. The goalies, Avery Groeninger and Lexi Krobath, only allowed four goals on the weekend.

So much of Loudoun is so new, so fast, that I enjoy lurking around the hallways and fields of the older schools in the county.
You wouldn’t know it by the past five or six years, where the school was literally busting at its seams until the opening of nearby Woodgrove, but until 1999, Loudoun Valley was historically the smallest high school in the county with under 1,000 students.
After spending a considerable amount of time at Valley for the Cheers Sports and VivaLoudoun Valley Wrestling Duals in January, it was quite evident to me that the school, which I always considered historically charming, was starting to show its wear and tear from nearly 50 years of use, especially in the athletic areas.
Swim: Heritage's Damon Rosenburg to Compete for NCAA Division III National Champion Denison University
(Mar. 29, 2011) - Heritage High School senior Damon Rosenburg announced Sunday that he will swim next year for Denison University, the Granville, Ohio school which a day earlier captured the NCAA Division III national championship and ending Kenyon College's amazing 31-year national title winning streak.
Rosenburg took fifth in the 100 breast at the AAA state meet this year with a 1:06.71 time. He also qualified for States in the 200 IM.

(Mar. 29, 2011) - The Potomac Falls High School historic back-to-back boys basketball state titles has reaped benefits as Panther senior Lukas Mihailovich has been named the Virginia High School Coaches Association Division 4 Player of the Year and Panther coach Jeff Hawes picked up his second straight Coach of the Year honor.
Panther junior Greg Graves was named second team all-state and Broad Run sophomore Nigel Johnson was honorable mention.

Girls Basketball: Stone Bridge Coach Chris Jones Steps Down After Bulldogs Best Season Ever
Ashburn (Mar. 29, 2011) - Stone Bridge High School girls basketball coach Chris Jones, who led the Bulldogs in three short seasons from a 3-19 mark to a 23-4 record and the school's first ever Liberty District title, has stepped down from the program to spend more time with his family.
"It was obviously a difficult decision for me and one that I thought about for the last six months," said Jones. "I loved coaching at Stone Bridge, working under Dave Hembach and Brian Parke, and competing in the AAA Liberty District. The toughest part is leaving the group of girls we had coming back because they were a treat to coach and they exceeded my expectations of them."
Jones, a former assistant at Broad Run High School, has an 8-month-old son at home.
"Even though I was only the head coach there for three years, I have been coaching for the last 15 years and now having an 8 month old boy. I felt that this was the time to step away for a couple of years and enjoy him while he is young," said Jones. "I wouldn't be able to put the time in the girls deserve to have a head coach put in during the off season."
Stone Bridge captured both the regular-season and tournament district titles this year and advanced to the Northern Region quarterfinals before falling to Robinson, 56-46.
"I know I will miss coaching very much but I am looking forward to taking some time away from coaching, enjoying my son, and becoming a spectator for the time being," said Jones.
Earlier, Stone Bridge boys coach Sonny Greene also stepped down so the Bulldogs are currently hunting for two new varsity basketball coaches.

College Signing: Stone Bridge Softball Seniors Lewis and Prince to Play NCAA Division I
Ashburn (Mar. 29, 2011) - Stone Bridge High School softball is ranked in the Top 10 in the Washington, D.C. area and a big reason is the senior leadership of two athletes that will play at the NCAA Division I level next year -- catcher Beth Lewis and shortstop Cori Prince.
Lewis will play at Wagner and Prince will play at George Mason. Both were honored by family, teammates and friends Friday in a signing ceremony at Stone Bridge.

Softball: Briar Woods Senior Jillian Olson to Play Softball at Mary Washington
Ashburn (Mar. 28, 2011) - Briar Woods High School senior catcher Jillian Olson is going to play softball next year at NCAA Division III University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg.
Olson helped the Falcons to a Dulles District tournament title her sophomore season and a perfect run through the district last year as the Falcons took both the tournament and regular season titles. Briar Woods finished with a school-record 21-4 mark as they were the Region II runner-up before their season ended in the state quarterfinals at Powhatan.
Olson was named second-team all-Dulles District.
Mary Washington is 12-18 this season, including 4-2 in the Capital Athletic Conference. Stone Bridge grad, junior Amanda Adams is the starting centerfielder for the Eagles.

Cheers Sports and VivaLoudoun Athletes of the Month for February 2011

Ashburn (Mar. 24, 2011) - Cheers Sports and VivaLoudoun.com released today their Athletes of the Month selections for February 2011. The February 2011 honorees -- the final selections for the winter sports season -- met at Lifetime Fitness in Ashburn on Feb. 12 for a photo shoot.
Chris Anderson was the photographer this month and the shoot was coordinated by Kristin Stubbs.
Each month VivaLoudoun editor Dan Sousa selects the top athletes from across Loudoun's 12 public high schools for the Cheers Sports Athletes of the Month program. For February 2011, a total of 45 athletes were selected across the six winter sports (boys basketball, girls basketball, gymnastics, wrestling, boys swim, girls swim) with special attention paid to those that advanced in state competition in February and early March.
"With Potomac Falls boys basketball bringing home another state title and the Loudoun County girls just missing a title, it was a great month of sports action in Loudoun," said Sousa.
