Ashburn (Mar. 29, 2011) - Stone Bridge High School girls basketball coach Chris Jones, who led the Bulldogs in three short seasons from a 3-19 mark to a 23-4 record and the school's first ever Liberty District title, has stepped down from the program to spend more time with his family.
"It was obviously a difficult decision for me and one that I thought about for the last six months," said Jones. "I loved coaching at Stone Bridge, working under Dave Hembach and Brian Parke, and competing in the AAA Liberty District. The toughest part is leaving the group of girls we had coming back because they were a treat to coach and they exceeded my expectations of them."
Jones, a former assistant at Broad Run High School, has an 8-month-old son at home.
"Even though I was only the head coach there for three years, I have been coaching for the last 15 years and now having an 8 month old boy. I felt that this was the time to step away for a couple of years and enjoy him while he is young," said Jones. "I wouldn't be able to put the time in the girls deserve to have a head coach put in during the off season."
Stone Bridge captured both the regular-season and tournament district titles this year and advanced to the Northern Region quarterfinals before falling to Robinson, 56-46.
"I know I will miss coaching very much but I am looking forward to taking some time away from coaching, enjoying my son, and becoming a spectator for the time being," said Jones.
Earlier, Stone Bridge boys coach Sonny Greene also stepped down so the Bulldogs are currently hunting for two new varsity basketball coaches.
