Cheers Sports and Viva Loudoun 2012-13 Winter Sports "Fan Favorites"

(June 20, 2013) - For the first time this year Cheers Sports and Viva Loudoun teamed up to pick an All Loudoun team for every varsity sport played in the 13 public high schools in Loudoun County. The competition was fierce to make the teams so we wanted the fans input to honor those athletes that just missed the All Loudoun cut or those that showed team spirit and hard work that often gets overlooked when it comes to honors.

After voting that saw more than 300 nominations, here are the "Fan Favorites" for Winter 2012-13. Athletes selected will be invited to a photo shoot this Sunday, June 23 at 12:30 p.m. at Replay Sports in Ashburn. RSVP and full details here.

While his size may limit him rebounding in the paint, he is truly a 4-tool guard averaging over 10 points a game while dishing out assists all over the court. He is often seen jumping passing lanes, causing turnovers leading to fastbreak transition buckets ... kid shot 70 percent from the free throw line in a year when free throw shooing was an after thought for most athletes in Loudoun."

With both Knox and Phillips under the basket, teams find it hard to grab rebounds and the Raiders score a lot of second chance points on put backs by Knox but don't be surprised when she sneaks out and hits a baseline 3-pointer with a girls in her face."

What the fans are saying: "Leading 3-point shooter in the Dulles District with 59. She was top eight in the Metro area."

Teal Reynolds (JR) Potomac Falls
What the fans are saying: "All around player averaged 13 ppg which was third in the conference and she led her team in assists with 3.1 a game. She had 3.2 steals a game and six rebounds a game as a point guard .. She has been a starter for three years and scored 23 vs. Broad Run and 22 vs. Park View ... Teal is a good all around athletic who loves the game and respect other players. She is dedicated to hard work and wants to win. She would be a great candidate for the All Loudoun team .... Teal has overcome great hardships throughout her high school career ... She is a 3-year letter winner and is on pace to be our school's leading scorer. She missed out on all district because of the strong players in our district and the larger number of teams ... Teal performed consistently well for her team by scoring, rebounding, and stealing at a very high clip ... she's the starting point guard and does everything to help them win."

She competed in the All Around at ever meet except for one, finished in the top 15 in the County in all events, had a fantastic showing at the State Qualifier and competed at the State meet in two events ... Brooke is the co-captain of the Falcons as a junior, earned the Coaches Award for her accomplishments and attitude this season ... she is a great, wonderful, talented person and is a great captain for the Briar Woods gymnastics team! ... I think Brooke my sister should be picked because she is always positive and always tries the best. She encouraged me to tryout for the gymnastics team although I couldn't compete this year because of a broken elbow. She always helped make sure I was included in everything the team did. She was a great captain, she supported all the gymnasts and made the season fun. Most importantly we could always count on her to turn in a great score ... She is a very dedicated athlete and student who is a positive role model for underclassmen ..  She showed positive team leadership as a captain this season ... I managed the Briar Woods gymnastics team this season and I know Brooke is a great team player and leader. The younger girls always came to her for advice on their routines or technique. She was always a very positive role model and showed that not even winning is more important than good sportsmanship and a good attitude. She even took a huge spill off the beam at one meet and finished the routine with a huge smile on her face, while most people would have given up. The team picked her as one of the captains, so they obviously see her as a leader and value her opinion ... She should be chosen as a fan favorite because of her determination and ability to motivate and pick people p when they might have had an off day ... I've been on Brooke's club gymnastics team for five years and she was almost always one of the reasons I came to practice. She always had a really positive attitude and never failed to cheer you up. Brooke is one of those people that makes you believe that you can do it no matter what. Her favorite saying was 'you're not going to die. And if you do, you'll never have to do it again' ... I went to the Districts meet and thought Brooke gave an amazing performance. She stood out as a great leader and captain with a positive attitude, cheering on all her teammates during the meet and posing as a wonderful role model .. She is a great leader and consistent performer and all around just a great person! ... She is very positive and a hard working leader. She is always there to encourage you and help you. She has been a role model for our team ... I did competitive gymnastics with Brooke and she is an amazing teammate and a very talented gymnast. She is so encouraging and always pushed me to do my best! ... She was very helpful, enthusiastic and a great teammate ... As captain she has led her team in events and brought out the fun and excitement of gymnastics in practices and competitions. Brooke's dedication to her teammates and willingness to choreograph and help them to improve their skills are what allowed the Falcons to have their best season yet. Brooke has also shown that with hard work and dedication you can overcome injury or obstacle and still succeed ... She was always smiling and showed great sportsmanship toward her own team as well as athletes on other teams ... Brooke IS Briar Woods gymnastics. She may not have the top scores, but she is consistent and the most supportive, enthusiastic teammate! My 6-year-old made us go to the Briar Woods meets just to watch Brooke! She's ALL heart and dedication!"

Wrestling: Woodgrove's Joe Cavallaro Commits to York College

(June 4, 2013) - Woodgrove High School senior Joe Cavallaro has committed to wrestle for NCAA Division III York College.

Cavallaro was recruited by York Coach Duane Bastress. York College finished with and 18-7 dual meet record last year. Cavallaro was a mainstay in the varsity line-up for Woodgrove in the school’s first three years competing the the 160 pound weight class in all of those years.

He was the first wrestler in the Woodgrove program to both qualify for and place in the state AA tournament. Joe finished 7th in the state his junior year and owns the school record for fastest pin.

Wrestling: Loudoun Valley SR Cassada-Maple Commits to Oklahoma State

(May 31, 2013) - Loudoun Valley High School senior Joshua Cassada-Maple announced this week that he has committed to wrestling next year at Oklahoma State for renowned coach John Smith.

Wrestling: Cheers Sports and Viva Loudoun 2012-13 All-Loudoun Team

(May 13, 2013) - Cheers Sports and Viva Loudoun have teamed up to selected their first ever All-Loudoun selections ... the top varsity athletes across the county's 13 public high schools for the 2012-13 school year.

We kicked off the selections with the fall sports season (boys cross country, girls cross country, golf, girls volleyball, competitive cheer and football) and we are covering the winter selections now with gymnastics, boy swim, girls swim and wrestling released so far.

Wrestling: Northwest Region Brackets - Freedom and Broad Run Each Advance 2 to AAA States

(Feb. 13, 2013) - Four area wrestlers emerged from the tough AAA Northwester Region tournament at Patriot High School Saturday to advance to the state tournament. Freedom had a pair of runner-ups in Andy Hinrichs (145) and Brendan Kammerdeiner (195) and Broad Run had a third place in Tarkan Martin  (138) and a fourth place in Timmy Brown (106).

Colonial Forge won the team title with 239.5 points followed by Forest Park (193), Franklin County (144), Battlefield (120.5) and Orange (100.5). Freedom was 9th with 74.5 and Broad Run was 13th with 62.5.

Wrestling: Complete Cedar Run Tournament Results

(Feb. 8, 2013) - At last weekend's Cedar Run District wrestling meet, Battlefield won with 210.5 points and Freedom was runner-up with 180.

Freedom senior Brendan Kammerdeeiner won the 195 pounds title and teammate sophomore Devin Richards claimed the 220 championship. Broad Run senior Tarkan Martin took the 138 title.

Runner-ups were Broad Run's Timmy Brown (106) and Logan Shain (170), and Freedom's Bradley Nelson (152) and Jake Wren (160).

Wrestling: Woodgrove Makes History with First Ever Boys Team Title

(Feb. 8, 2013) - The Woodgrove High School wrestling team takes to the mats today and Saturday in the Region II meet at John Champe High School in Aldie but the Wolverines took a little break from training this week to raise a Dulles District championship banner at the Purcellville school. It was the school's first ever boys district team title since opening in 2010-11.

Wrestling: Champe Hosts Region II Meet Friday-Saturday

(Feb. 7, 2013) - More than 200 wrestlers from Region II will compete at John Champe High School in Aldie on Friday and Saturday for a shot at the AA state meet. Action starts Friday at 2 p.m. with the final slated for 5 p.m. on Saturday.

In between there will more than 400 bouts on the mats. Here are the brackets.

Fauquier is the defending Region II champion with 220.5 points in 2012, some 24 points better than runner-up Millbrook.

(Feb. 2, 2013) - The Dulles District 2013 wrestling tournament was one of the closest team races in Loudoun history with Woodgrove High School capturing its first ever title with a slim 1.5 point margin over defending champion Loudoun County. The Wolverines scored 217 points to Loudoun County's 215.5 with Potomac Falls close behind at 200.

Wrestling: Loudoun County Ready for Postseason After School's Best Ever Regular Season

Leesburg (Jan. 31, 2013) - The Loudoun County High School wrestling team started off the 2012-13 season with their annual "Blue and Gold Night" inter-squad wrestle-offs and it has been just solid "Gold" ever since as the Raiders head into postseason on the heels of the school's best ever regular season campaign including a first ever Dulles District Duals championship.

The Raiders take to the mats Saturday at Loudoun Valley High School to defend their Dulles District tournament title, and they will roll into Purcellville with a school-record 35-6 dual meet mark, and tournament trophy's brought back home from three different states.

"Going 35-6 with a grueling schedule takes a toll on the wrestlers," said Loudoun County coach Joel Caruso. "We have had a great season. It's been a great team effort."

Wrestling: "Incredible Hulcher" Looking to Win it All this Postseason

Ashburn (Jan. 30, 2013) - Briar Woods High School 126-pound wrestler Michael Hulcher is already a marked man.

Hulcher will bring his sparkling 39-2 record and No. 1 AA state ranking into the Dulles District tournament Feb. 2 at Loudoun Valley High School, but the hard-working junior may have a little family trouble to deal with first following his title run at the Freedom Invitational.

In a family of incredible wrestlers – the Incredible Hulchers if you will – Michael became tops as his three wins Jan. 26 jumped him past brother Brian (2011 grad with 125 career wins) and brother Thomas (2009 grad with 126 career wins) as he ran his lifetime record at Briar Woods to 127-22.

“My brothers told me that if I beat their records they were going to beat me up,” joked Hulcher prior to the Freedom Invitational.

News: Friday Activities Rescheduled Including Dulles and Liberty District Swim Meets

(Jan. 25, 2013) - Forecast for snow and already ice side streets in Loudoun has promoted Loudoun County Public Schools officials to release students one hour early today and cancel all after school athletic events.

Dulles District swim is now rescheduled for noon on Saturday at Claude Moore and the Liberty District two-day meet is now going to be a one-day meet with timed finals starting Saturday at 5:30 p.m. at Audrey Moore.

Wrestling: Loudoun County Takes Title in New Jersey after Second Place Finish at Skyline

Leesburg (Dec. 30, 2012) The Loudoun County High School wrestling team had a very successful holiday break starting with a 5-1 mark and second place finish at the Appalachian Duals at Skyline. The best was yet to come.

The Raiders had a few days off, then went back to action in Collingswood, NJ for their annual Christmas Tournament. The team left for New Jersey on Dec. 26 at 6 a.m. The team arrived around 9:30, had a 2 hour practice then headed off to Philadelphia to run the "Rocky steps" at the Philadelphia Art Museum. 

Raiders took to the mat on Dec. 27 and had a roller coaster day of ups & downs but pulled through and sent six into the finals: 126 Matt Sun, 138 Logan Smith, 160 Hunter Day, 182 Alex Reader, 195 Cory Dickey, and 220 Kyle Schlue. 

The team race was very tight with the top three teams all within distance to win. The Raiders were behind with two weight classes to wrestle but the big guys came through with pins by Dickey at 195 and Schlue at 220 to secure the team title with 181.5 points.
