Soccer: Briar Woods Sweeps to Boys, Girls Region II Titles over rivals Tuscarora, Woodgrove; Broad Run Boys Fall in Northwest Final

(June 4, 2013) - The Briar Woods High School boys and girls soccer teams captured their first ever Region II titles Friday with wins over Dulles District rivals with the Falcon boys beating Tuscarora, 2-1, in Leesburg and the Falcon girls dramatically beating Woodgrove, 1-0, in overtime in Ashburn.

All four teams advance to tonight's AA state quarterfinals with Briar Woods hosting a doubleheader with the boys facing Culpeper at 5:30 p.m. and the girls hosting Jamestown at 7:30 p.m. The Tuscarora boys are on the road vs. Lafayette at Wanner Stadium at 7 p.m. and the Wolverine girls travel to Courtland for a 6 p.m. start.

A win would advance each team to this weekend's Final Four which will be held at Radford on Friday and Saturday.

In AAA boys action, Broad Run fell in a high-scoring affair to Forest Park in the Northwest Region finals, 5-4. The Spartans are at Northern Region champion Oakton tonight at 7 p.m.

State Tournament Scorecard: 15 Loudoun Teams Make States Including 5 from Woodgrove

(May 29, 2013) - A total 15 Loudoun teams qualified for state tournaments this spring including five teams from Woodgrove High School. Briar Woods, with three, and Broad Run, with two, were the only other schools with multiple teams moving on past region. Eight of the 13 Loudoun schools had at least one team make States.

Tennis: Loudoun County's Jack McLister, Alexa Kling Take Dulles District Singles Titles; Freedom Boys Advance to Northwest Region Team Semifinals

(May 14, 2013) - Loudoun County High School sophomore Jack McLister and freshman Alexa Kling each won Dulles District tennis tournament singles titles on Monday.

McLister defeated Jake Stapleton of Dominion, 6-4, 6-2 in the finals and Kling defeated Dominique Huynh of Dominion, 6-3, 6-1 in the other finals.

The doubles tournament took place today. Last week the team tournament was held with Briar Woods sweeping both the boys and girls tournaments. The Falcons beat the regular-season champion Dominion Titans in the girls finals and in the boys finals it was the Falcons over Loudoun County.

Freedom One Win Away from AAA States

The Freedom High School boys tennis team continued its postseason run with a 5-1 win at Osbourn Park on Monday to move into the Northwest Region team tennis semifinals. The Eagles are one win away from making it to the AAA state tournament. They travel to Roanoke on Wednesday to face Western Valley District champion Patrick Henry.

Broad Run, the Cedar Run District regular-season boys champion, saw its season end with a tough 5-4 loss at home to Colonial Forge, which now faces Albemarle in the other semi Wednesday.

The Freedom girls had their excellent season end with a 5-1 loss to Franklin County.

(May 10, 2013) - The 2013 Northwest Region boys and girls tennis tournaments open play today with the Freedom boys hosting George Washington-Danville and the Broad Run girls at Riverbend in first round action.

Swim: Northwest Region Meet - Harman, Freedom Sprinters Make Waves

(Feb. 13, 2013) - Freedom High's Michael Harman was second in the 50 free and fifth in the 100 free and swam anchor of the Eagles runner-up 200-yard free relay team at the AA Northwest Region meet over the weekend.

Harman set schools records in both the 50 and 100 and the Eagles relay team was also a school best time.

Placing top six to advance automatically to States also included Broad Run's Michael Kopecky (5th in 50 free), Freedom's Austen Bundy (6th in 100 fly)

Gymnastics: Northwest Region Meet - Freedom's Gibbs, Broad Run's Stolcenberg go 4-5 in All Around

(Feb. 13, 2013) - Freedom High School's Allie Gibbs finished fourth in the All Around at the AAA Northwest Region gymnastics meet held Feb. 7 in South Riding at Freedom. Broad Run's Kerry Stolcenberg just missed qualifying for the AAA State All Around with a fifth place finish but she did qualify for all four individual events with top 8 finishes.

Also advancing was Broad Run's Morgan Clear in the vault.

Wrestling: Northwest Region Brackets - Freedom and Broad Run Each Advance 2 to AAA States

(Feb. 13, 2013) - Four area wrestlers emerged from the tough AAA Northwester Region tournament at Patriot High School Saturday to advance to the state tournament. Freedom had a pair of runner-ups in Andy Hinrichs (145) and Brendan Kammerdeiner (195) and Broad Run had a third place in Tarkan Martin  (138) and a fourth place in Timmy Brown (106).

Colonial Forge won the team title with 239.5 points followed by Forest Park (193), Franklin County (144), Battlefield (120.5) and Orange (100.5). Freedom was 9th with 74.5 and Broad Run was 13th with 62.5.

Girls Volleyball: Nov. 8 Playoff Scores + The Skinny -- Loudoun County, Stone Bridge Punch Tickets to States; Broad Run, Potomac Falls Fall in 5-Set Heartbreakers!

(Nov. 9, 2012) - The Loudoun County and Stone Bridge girls volleyball teams are once again headed back to the VHSL state tournament after regional semifinal wins Thursday while Broad Run and Potomac Falls had their seasons end in 5-set heartbreakers.

Stone Bridge (25-2) will play for a third straight AAA Northern Region title on Saturday against Liberty District rival Langley (24-4) at 6 p.m. at Centreville High School. Loudoun County (24-1) will shoot for an amazing seventh straight Region II title Saturday when the Raiders host James Wood (22-3) at 7 p.m.

The Skinny:Loudoun County started fast and fought off a late charge to sweep Handley on Thursday night. Loudoun County moves on to the Region Championship this Saturday, and also punches their 7th consecutive ticket to the VHSL AA State Tournament that begins next Tuesday.

Come out and support the Raiders this Thursday as they strive for their 7th consecutive Region Championship.

Linda Lachey-Helms, PFalls coach, said: "Our four seniors high school careers might have come to an end last night but they leave their mark on PF and high school volleyball. Setting 12 school records. Kayla Carlton, Eileen Fauteux, Patricia Mook and Hailey Bahr are outstanding young women and outstanding role models for everyone around them both on and off the court. We will miss them all so very much."

The Skinny: Loudoun County battled back after dropping the second set to defeat Loudoun Valley for the 4th time this season. The Lady Raiders won their 13th straight match and improved to 23-1 on the season. 

Girls Volleyball: Loudoun Valley, Stone Bridge Advance; Heritage's Season Ends in 5 Sets at Powhatan

(Nov. 6, 2012) - Loudoun Valley High School advanced to the Region II quarterfinals and a date with top seed Loudoun County with a win on the road Monday at Fauquier, and Stone Bridge High School advanced to the Northern Region quarterfinals with a sweep over Lake Braddock.

The Bulldogs will host Centreville tonight. The Northern Region bracket was turned upside as the No. 4 seed from the Liberty, James Madison, upset the Patriot top seed Woodson and the Concorde No. 4 seed Centreville knocked off the National top seed Yorktown. Liberty No. 1 Langley barely survived becoming a third top seed to fall after the Saxons beat Patriot No. 4 seed T.C. Williams in five sets.

Heritage had its season end with a 5-set loss at Powhatan.
