Girls Volleyball: Meghan Puckli Takes Reigns of Tuscarora Program

(June 21, 2013) - Meghan Puckli, a former Loudoun County High School and Christopher Newport University girls volleyball standout, has taken the reigns of the Tuscarora program. Puckli  had been an assistant in the Huskies program under Marsha Hermes who left in the offseason to take over at Briar Woods.

In other coaching news from the May 28 school board meeting, Tuscarora promoted Libby Messina from assistant gymnastics coach to head coach.

(June 21, 2013) - Briar Woods High School's competitive cheer coach Kristin Develli, who in 2012 led the Falcons to their four consecutive straight AA state titles, will not be at the helm in the fall as former Dominion coach Lucia Curry was approved as the new Briar Woods varsity head coach at the June 11 school board meeting.

Other new varsity coaches according to the board docs:

• Juliet Kenny will be John Champe's head gymnastics coach in the winter. She was an assistant in the Knights first year under Hope Spivey.
• Sema Knonur is Heritage High School's new varsity cheer coach
• Kendall Beebe, a Potomac Falls High School grad, is Park View's new girls volleyball coach.

Cheers Sports and Viva Loudoun 2012-13 Winter Sports "Fan Favorites"

(June 20, 2013) - For the first time this year Cheers Sports and Viva Loudoun teamed up to pick an All Loudoun team for every varsity sport played in the 13 public high schools in Loudoun County. The competition was fierce to make the teams so we wanted the fans input to honor those athletes that just missed the All Loudoun cut or those that showed team spirit and hard work that often gets overlooked when it comes to honors.

After voting that saw more than 300 nominations, here are the "Fan Favorites" for Winter 2012-13. Athletes selected will be invited to a photo shoot this Sunday, June 23 at 12:30 p.m. at Replay Sports in Ashburn. RSVP and full details here.

I managed the Briar Woods gymnastics team this season and I know Brooke is a great team player and leader. The younger girls always came to her for advice on their routines or technique. She was always a very positive role model and showed that not even winning is more important than good sportsmanship and a good attitude. She even took a huge spill off the beam at one meet and finished the routine with a huge smile on her face, while most people would have given up. The team picked her as one of the captains, so they obviously see her as a leader and value her opinion ... She should be chosen as a fan favorite because of her determination and ability to motivate and pick people p when they might have had an off day ... I've been on Brooke's club gymnastics team for five years and she was almost always one of the reasons I came to practice. She always had a really positive attitude and never failed to cheer you up. Brooke is one of those people that makes you believe that you can do it no matter what. Her favorite saying was 'you're not going to die. And if you do, you'll never have to do it again' ... I went to the Districts meet and thought Brooke gave an amazing performance. She stood out as a great leader and captain with a positive attitude, cheering on all her teammates during the meet and posing as a wonderful role model .. She is a great leader and consistent performer and all around just a great person! ... She is very positive and a hard working leader. She is always there to encourage you and help you. She has been a role model for our team ... I did competitive gymnastics with Brooke and she is an amazing teammate and a very talented gymnast. She is so encouraging and always pushed me to do my best! ... She was very helpful, enthusiastic and a great teammate ... As captain she has led her team in events and brought out the fun and excitement of gymnastics in practices and competitions. Brooke's dedication to her teammates and willingness to choreograph and help them to improve their skills are what allowed the Falcons to have their best season yet. Gymnastics: Potomac Falls SR Lily Hardman to Compete at Iowa State

(May 22, 2013) - Lily Hardman, a senior at Potomac Falls High School, and Level 10 gymnast, has committed to Iowa State University to compete for their NCAA Divsion I gymnastics team.

Gymnastics: Chase Clingman, Age 11, Wins Four Medals at 2013 Men's Junior Olympic Championship in Oregon

(May 17, 2013) - APEX gymnast Chase Clingman, age 11, spent his first week of May in Portland, Oregon competing at the 2013 U.S. Junior Olympic National Championships. He was accompanied by his coach, Vladimir Shamenko, a bronze medalist in the 1996 Summer Olympics, and Clingman came away with an impressive four medals including 3rd on the floor, 4th on parallel bars, 5th on high bar and tied for 6th on vault.

More than 700 of the USA's top Level 8, 9 and 10 men's gymnasts competed over the course of 5 days. Chase was one of only four 11 year olds from Region 7 (Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, West Virginia, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania) to qualify to this event.

Gymnastics: APEX's Jamie Morris Crowned Region 7 Bars Champion

(May 16, 2013) - APEX gymnast, Jamie Morris, was crowned the Region 7 Bars champion at Level 8 Regionals held in Landover, MD the weekend of May 4 and 5, 2013. Morris scored a 9.475 to capture the regional title.

APEX gymnast Ashley Spangler also had high results finishing 10th in the vault.

Gymnastics: Cheers Sports and Viva Loudoun 2012-13 All-Loudoun Team

(May 12, 2013) - Cheers Sports and Viva Loudoun have teamed up to selected their first ever All-Loudoun selections ... the top varsity athletes across the county's 13 public high schools for the 2012-13 school year.

We kicked off the selections with the fall sports season (boys cross country, girls cross country, golf, girls volleyball, competitive cheer and football) and now we start the winter selections with gymnastics.

Gymnastics: APEX Crowns at State Champion

(April 20, 2013) - APEX Level 7 gymnast, Ashley Wilkins, was crowned the Level 7 state champion on balance beam at the state championships held in Hampton, VA on April 6 and 7. Gymnasts from all over the state competed with a total of over 600 competitors and 55 teams. The APEX level 7 team finished 9th in the state!

APEX Level 6s had a strong showing as well led by strong all around performances by Ellie Wooten and McKenna Magoffin. The level 6 team finished 13th in team competition out of the 30 teams competing for state titles. Congratulations to all of the gymnasts. Top 10 finishes are listed below:

Gymnastics: APEX Boys Successful at States

(March 20, 2013) - The Apex boys gymnastics team returned to Virginia beach over the weekend to  compete at this years State Meet and it was a successful trip as the entire team team qualified to Regionals.

News: LCPS Driver's Ed Teacher Charged with Drunk in Public

(March 4, 2013) - A Loudoun County Public School teacher was charged with drunk in public after he was found intoxicated at an Ashburn, Virginia school today.

Gymnastics: Viva Loudoun Top Marks 2012-13 Final Update

(Feb. 7, 2013) - Viva Loudoun has published its final update for its top marks chart for area high school gymnasts with results from the VHSL state open championships.

Broad Run's Kerry Stolcenberg ends with the top All Around mark of 37.400 as well as the top vault (9.650) and she is tied with Sara Connors of Briar Woods with a season-best of 9.150 on bars. Connors is tops on the floor with a 9.650 and Freedom's Alli Gibbs is No. 1 on the beam (9.575).

Stone Bridge's 139.425 at the Liberty District meet was tops this season with Loudoun County's winning 135.700 at the Dulles District meet second best and Freedom's 134.675 at the Cedar Run District meet in the third slot.

Gymnastics: Complete VHSL Open Championships Results - Stolcenberg, Gibbs 8th on Beam

Gymnastics: Northwest Region Meet - Freedom's Gibbs, Broad Run's Stolcenberg go 4-5 in All Around

(Feb. 13, 2013) - Freedom High School's Allie Gibbs finished fourth in the All Around at the AAA Northwest Region gymnastics meet held Feb. 7 in South Riding at Freedom. Broad Run's Kerry Stolcenberg just missed qualifying for the AAA State All Around with a fifth place finish but she did qualify for all four individual events with top 8 finishes.

Also advancing was Broad Run's Morgan Clear in the vault.

Gymnastics: Briar Woods' Sara Connors Takes All Around at A/AA State Qualifier

(Feb. 10, 2013) - Briar Woods' Sara Connors captured the All Around at Saturday's A/AA State Qualifier meet at Woodgrove High School.

Connors scored 36.325 to win. Also qualifying for the VHSL state meet in the All Around were Victoria Miner (35.800) and Hannah Powell (35.675) of Loudoun County and John Champe's Hallie Nichols (34.550).

The top eight in each event also qualified for next week's state meet at Centreville High School.

Gymnastics: Stone Bridge Takes 5th at Northern Region Meet

(Feb. 7, 2013) - Stone Bridge High School placed fifth at the AAA Northern Region gymnastics meet held at Lake Braddock Wednesday night.

Washington-Lee won the meet wtih 147.150 points followed by McLean (143.0), Chantilly (142.450), Woodson (141.450) and Stone Bridge (136.275). Top 10 in each event:

Gymnastics: APEX Level 4 Team Qualifies for States

(Feb. 6, 2013) - The APEX Level 4 team competed in the Sectional qualifier at Chantilly Gymnastics in an effort to qualify to state competition. Gymnasts must score a 33.00 all around in order to qualify to the state competition to be held at Averett University in Danville, VA in May. All of the APEX gymnasts moved on to state competition!

Gymnastics: Feedom's Alli Gibbs, Broad Run's Kerry Stolcenberg Go 1-2 at Cedar Run District Meet

(Feb, 4 2013) - Freedom High School's Alli Gibbs and Broad Run's Kerry Stolcenberg went 1-2 at the Cedar Run District gymnastics meet Friday night. Gibbs won the All Around with a 36.075 while winning both the beam (9.4) and bars (8.375) while Stolcenberg was second in the All Around with a 36.025 while winning both the floor (9.575) and vault (9.65).

Battlefield took the team title with a 139.625 with Freedom advancing to the Northwest Region meet at runner-up with a 134.675, just ahead of Broad Run (133.150). Patriot finished 4th at 123.100.

Gymnastics: Loudoun County Wins Dulles District Title

Sterling (Feb. 3, 2013) - Loudoun County High School fought off Briar Woods to capture its second consecutive Dulles District title Saturday at Park View High School.

The Raiders scored just over a point more than the Falcons, 135.700 to 134.475 to take the top step on the podium. The well-balanced meet had Loudoun Valley (127.975), Potomac Falls (125.700), Woodgrove (122.675) and Tuscarora (122.100) all breaking 122 points.

Loudoun County's Hannah Powell, fifth in the All Around last year, jumped to the top with an All Around score of 35.2 to beat out teammates Lauren McCullough (34.525) and Victoria Miner (34.4) as the Raiders showed their depth with the 1-2-3 finish.

Powell won the All Around despite not taking first in any event as Briar Woods Sara Connors won both the floor (9.475) and bars (8.825) and McCullough took the beam (8.95) and Miner the vault (9.3).

Rounding out the top six in the All Around were Hallie Nichols of Champe, Alyssa Del Prete of Potomac Falls and Shannon Keye of Tuscarora.

Gymnastics: Stone Bridge Runner-up to McLean at Liberty District Meet

(Jan. 30, 2013) - For the second straight year, McLean High School edged host Stone Bridge to capture the Liberty District gymnastics title. The Highlanders scored 142.05 points Monday while the Bulldogs finished at 139.425.

Morgan Stahl became the first Marshall gymnast to ever capture the All Around with a 37.600 score. McLean's Jacqueline Green was runner-up at 36.775 while Stone Bridge's Eleni Papadopoulos was third at 36.425.

Stahl won the vault with a 9.625. Stahl and Green each scored 9.5252 to tie for first on the beam. McLean's Lizzy Brown-Kaiser scored a 9.00 to win on the bars and she took the floor with a 9.750.
