Cheers Sports and Viva Loudoun 2013 Spring Sports "Fan Favorites"

(June 21, 2013) - For the first time this year Cheers Sports and Viva Loudoun teamed up to pick an All Loudoun team for every varsity sport played in the 13 public high schools in Loudoun County. The competition was fierce to make the teams so we wanted the fans input to honor those athletes that just missed the All Loudoun cut or those that showed team spirit and hard work that often gets overlooked when it comes to honors.

After voting that saw more than 300 nominations, here are the "Fan Favorites" for Spring 2013. Athletes selected will be invited to a photo shoot this Sunday, June 23 at 12:45 p.m. at Replay Sports in Ashburn. RSVP and full details here.

What the fans are saying: Emilee is a true leader on and off the field. Her hard work is apparent as she finished second in the Dulles District with 122 saves in just 10 games according to All Mets Sports. She also scored two goals during a scrimmage and during the regular season."

She consistently displays a positive attitude and is always there to pick up teammate/friend when they need it most. Lauren is one of the most kind hearted people I have ever come in contact with and I can not wait to see what she accomplishes next year as she continues to play lacrosse at North Carolina Wesleyan! ... I only had the privilege to play with Lauren on a club team but she is one of the best teammates I have ever had. She always supported me and rest of the team and keeps up good sportsmanship no matter the score or situation. Awesome job catching/blocking/.framing for the Liberty District Pitcher of the Year and AAA Northern Region tournament MVP, Kelly McDaniel ... She is one of the best catchers in the State and she hit really well, too! ... Olivia is the best catcher any team could ask for. She is a team leader both on and off the field. She is also very supportive and encouraging of everyone, especially pitchers. Although she isn't often recognized for her hard work and success because she is hidden behind the plate, she has played a crucial role as the Stone Bridge catcher for the past two years. She is a wall back there and I could probably count on one hand the number of passed balls that occurred this year. She is also nearly impossible to steal on, so very few runners even attempt to steal and the ones that do are thrown out. She is also a very solid hitter and hit a bomb during the regional playoffs. Any pitcher would be lucky to have Olivia as her catcher ... She is a positive team leader, role model and great player! ... Olivia is the best catcher in Loudoun hands down. I can probably count o one hand the number of bases stolen against her on varsity. Not only can we rely on her to be a brick wall and an outstanding hitter, but she also acts as one of the best leaders and motivators on the team ... She is the best catcher in the county! Plus she caught for Kelly McDaniel the best pitcher in the county. Those two together are as good as it gets, truly a dynamic duo."

She competed in the All Around at ever meet except for one, finished in the top 15 in the County in all events, had a fantastic showing at the State Qualifier and competed at the State meet in two events ... Brooke is the co-captain of the Falcons as a junior, earned the Coaches Award for her accomplishments and attitude this season ... she is a great, wonderful, talented person and is a great captain for the Briar Woods gymnastics team! ... I think Brooke my sister should be picked because she is always positive and always tries the best. She encouraged me to tryout for the gymnastics team although I couldn't compete this year because of a broken elbow. She always helped make sure I was included in everything the team did. She was a great captain, she supported all the gymnasts and made the season fun. Most importantly we could always count on her to turn in a great score ... She is a very dedicated athlete and student who is a positive role model for underclassmen ..  She showed positive team leadership as a captain this season ... I managed the Briar Woods gymnastics team this season and I know Brooke is a great team player and leader. The younger girls always came to her for advice on their routines or technique. She was always a very positive role model and showed that not even winning is more important than good sportsmanship and a good attitude. She even took a huge spill off the beam at one meet and finished the routine with a huge smile on her face, while most people would have given up. The team picked her as one of the captains, so they obviously see her as a leader and value her opinion ... She should be chosen as a fan favorite because of her determination and ability to motivate and pick people p when they might have had an off day ... I've been on Brooke's club gymnastics team for five years and she was almost always one of the reasons I came to practice. She always had a really positive attitude and never failed to cheer you up. Brooke is one of those people that makes you believe that you can do it no matter what. Her favorite saying was 'you're not going to die. And if you do, you'll never have to do it again' ... I went to the Districts meet and thought Brooke gave an amazing performance. She stood out as a great leader and captain with a positive attitude, cheering on all her teammates during the meet and posing as a wonderful role model .. She is a great leader and consistent performer and all around just a great person! ... She is very positive and a hard working leader. She is always there to encourage you and help you. She has been a role model for our team ... I did competitive gymnastics with Brooke and she is an amazing teammate and a very talented gymnast. She is so encouraging and always pushed me to do my best! ... She was very helpful, enthusiastic and a great teammate ... As captain she has led her team in events and brought out the fun and excitement of gymnastics in practices and competitions. Brooke's dedication to her teammates and willingness to choreograph and help them to improve their skills are what allowed the Falcons to have their best season yet. Brooke has also shown that with hard work and dedication you can overcome injury or obstacle and still succeed ... She was always smiling and showed great sportsmanship toward her own team as well as athletes on other teams ... Brooke IS Briar Woods gymnastics. She may not have the top scores, but she is consistent and the most supportive, enthusiastic teammate! My 6-year-old made us go to the Briar Woods meets just to watch Brooke! She's ALL heart and dedication!"

Cheers Sports and Viva Loudoun All-Loudoun Teams Selection Process

(June 16, 2013) - We are releasing our Cheer Sports/Viva Loudoun All-Loudoun picks for the 10 spring sports shortly. Selections were made by Viva Loudoun editor Dan Sousa and college intern Owen Gotimer.

Please note that it is impossible to ever get these teams "right" because by their very nature they are subjective. We are picking just 12 athletes or so per sport and that is across 13 public high school so some of the very best athletes did not make the cut! And we are comparing AA and AAA teams that often do not play each other or play the same level of competition so it can't be based always on head-to-head competition.

For selection, we considered first hand observation from game coverage, conversations with coaches, all-district and all-region teams as picked by coaches, All Mets picks by the Washington Post staff, game reports and game/player stats as supplied by the teams to media.

Not every team supplied reports/stats to media in the spring so that may have hindered us picking some athletes and we apologize but we can only go off the information we have at hand.

Please note that those athletes on teams that made long postseason runs got more exposure and thus more chance to be chosen and we tried to award clutch performers.

For track and field, we relied on big meet performances and also top marks as supplied to Milestat, the keeper of all things track and field in Virginia!

In some cases we may have bypassed a first team all-district player for a second-team all-district player based on our own subjective analysis and in other cases an athlete that is a team's MVP may not be picked in favor of their teammate, again based on our subjective opinion. Often times a team's MVP is many more things than the best player on the team.

If you did not get picked, it did not mean you didn't have a great season!

And knowing we have missed some great athletes, you have a chance to nominate those we didn't pick as "Fan Favorites" ... please complete this form to add your favorite athlete to the photo shoot on Sunday, June 23. We will honor the Fall, Winter and Spring "Fan Favorites" with individual and group shots.

What if I can't make my assigned time? No problem, you can still have your individual shot taken any time during the photo shoot. You will just miss the group photo.
What if I can't make it at all Sunday? No problem. You will still be named to the All-Loudoun team of your sport and Cheers Sports will have a list of the teams. You can pick up your t-shirt from Cheers any time after June 23.
What if I was named to a fall or winter All-Loudoun team and couldn't make the photo shoot. Can I come have my individual shot taken? Yes! Show up anytime during the shoot hours.
Is there a cost to attend the photo shoot? No! Photos will be available for purchase at a later date.
When will the photos be available for viewing/purchase? Photographer Aaron Wyche will be shooting with a "green screen" and will be producing one-of-a-kind keepsake shots for the athletes. Expect photos to be posted on Viva Loudoun's photo site about two to three weeks after the shoot.

What to Wear: If you have a jersey top that would be great (no full uniforms needed) or you can wear some sort of spirit wear that IDs your school and sport
Arrival: Please try to arrive at least 5 minutes prior to the group photo time so we can organize the shots
What if I can't make it? No problem. You will still be named to the All-Loudoun team of your sport and Cheers Sports will have a list of the teams. You can pick up your t-shirt from Cheers any time after May 19.

Boys Basketball: Cheers Sports and Viva Loudoun 2012-13 All-Loudoun Team

(May 13, 2013) - Cheers Sports and Viva Loudoun have teamed up to selected their first ever All-Loudoun selections ... the top varsity athletes across the county's 13 public high schools for the 2012-13 school year.

We kicked off the selections with the fall sports season (boys cross country, girls cross country, golf, girls volleyball, competitive cheer and football) and now we have covered the winter selections with gymnastics, boy swim, girls swim, wrestling and girls basketball released prior to boys basketball.

There will be a photo shoot at Cheers Sports in Ashburn on Sunday, May 19 for those athletes selected with the boys basketball group photo at 1 p.m. Please RVSP to dan.sousa@verizon.net or text to 703.509.8826.
