Please note that it is impossible to ever get these teams "right" because by their very nature they are subjective. We are picking just 12 athletes or so per sport and that is across 13 public high school so some of the very best athletes did not make the cut! And we are comparing AA and AAA teams that often do not play each other or play the same level of competition so it can't be based always on head-to-head competition.
For selection, we considered first hand observation from game coverage, conversations with coaches, all-district and all-region teams as picked by coaches, All Mets picks by the Washington Post staff, game reports and game/player stats as supplied by the teams to media.
Not every team supplied reports/stats to media in the spring so that may have hindered us picking some athletes and we apologize but we can only go off the information we have at hand.
Please note that those athletes on teams that made long postseason runs got more exposure and thus more chance to be chosen and we tried to award clutch performers.
For track and field, we relied on big meet performances and also top marks as supplied to Milestat, the keeper of all things track and field in Virginia!
In some cases we may have bypassed a first team all-district player for a second-team all-district player based on our own subjective analysis and in other cases an athlete that is a team's MVP may not be picked in favor of their teammate, again based on our subjective opinion. Often times a team's MVP is many more things than the best player on the team.
If you did not get picked, it did not mean you didn't have a great season!
