Football: Broad Run Rolls to 15th Straight Victory

The Broad High School football team, which won the AA Division 4 state crown last year, rolled to its 15th straight victory Friday, a 40-6 win over Fauquier.

The Spartans have now won 21 consecutive regular season games, dating back to a 35-21 loss to Park View on Nov. 10, 2006. Broad Run's last loss was in the regional semifinals in 2007 -- also to Park View, 16-12.

T.J. Peeler needed just 10 carries to pile up 104 yards rushing and two touchdowns. It was a typical empty the bench type of BR blowout with coach Mike Burnett spreading around 33 carries to eight rushers for a staggering 290 yards on the ground.

David Weaver made his debut at quarterback for the Spartans, going 3 of 4 for 51 yards including a 20-yard score to Joey Quigg.

Dig Pink/Volley for Cure Matches Approved for Oct.

News from the Virginia High School League: The American Cancer Society (ACS) annually designates October as “Breast Cancer Awareness Month.” Breast cancer is the second most common cancer among U.S. women, and is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer. According to the ACS, an estimated 180,000 American women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year, and an estimated 40,000 American women will die from breast cancer this year. A woman’s chance of having breast cancer is 1 in 8. Her chance of dying from breast cancer is 1 in 35. But, there is hope! According to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, there are 2.5 million breast cancer survivors in America today, and the 5-year survival rate after early stage diagnosis and treatment is nearly 98% (compared to 74% in 1982). Early detection and treatment are the keys.

A number of schools have indicated interest in playing a “Dig for the Cure,” or “Volley for the Cure” match to help raise awareness of and fight against breast cancer in their communities. In order to maximize the impact of such games across the Commonwealth, VHSL has designated Oct. 1 – Oct. 16 as the time period during which schools that so desire are encouraged to play these matches. Later this week, there will be a “toolkit” in the Volleyball section of our website to provide ideas and resources to help create an effective event. We will also note permissible uniform variations for these games.

Nearly all of us know someone – a family member, a neighbor, a friend, a co-worker – whose life has been changed by a diagnosis of breast cancer. Free! Football! Free! Football! Free!

That is right folks ... step right up and watch some high school football tonight at Potomac Falls High School for free as the Panthers will not be charging fans who watch the completion of the Jefferson (WV) game which was suspended Saturday night -- a night after being postponed! -- with 4:48 left in the first half.

Of course with a free football game you don't get all the thrills and frills of paying for a game ... it is strictly BYOF tonight (Bring Your Own Food) and there won't be any halftime entertainment ... will there even be a halftime!?! You don't really need a break after four minutes of football unless it is an over-70 league at Leisure World.

Loudoun Valley Opens Strong Against Dominion

The Loudoun Valley High School football team scored just 26 points in the first five games last year but the Vikes put memories of that season away quickly Friday as they rolled to a 41-0 win over Dominion at home.

Junior quarterback Andrew Taylor threw for 253 yards on 17 of 26 passing and tossed four touchdowns, three to Kyle Kohnen in the first half in the non-district match-up of two teams that went 1-9 last year under first-year coaches (Danny McGrath at LV and Karl Buckwalter at Dominion).

The AAA Vikes -- with an enrollment of 2,205 a year ago and probably pushing 2,300 now -- had too much depth for the AA Titans -- with an enrollment last year of 1,241.

LV's defense held Titan senior running back DeAndre Reaves to 31 yards on 10 carries and the Vikes out-gained the Titans, 442-103 in total yards. LV piled up 23 first downs to Dominion's four.

Bernard Thompson led the Vikes with 104 yards on 23 carries.

Briar Woods Misses Opportunity to Wins Its Opener

Ashburn (Aug. 28, 2009) – The Briar Woods High School football team had its opportunities to win its season opener Friday but the Falcons squandered their chances and fell 21-14 to Millbrook in a non-district contest.

With the game tied 14-14 after an exciting first half, the second half was mired by turnovers – two by each team including miscues in the Red Zone – and penalties and the game-winning score came on junior Jordan Hartman’s 65-yard punt return with 4:16 left in the contest.

“We squandered six opportunities and I told the team that ball security was going to be a big part of the game,” said Briar Woods head coach Charlie Pierce after his team was shut out in the second half despite driving to the Pioneers 31 or deeper three times.

The Falcons return just five starters from last year’s school-record 8-3 squad but a pair of first-half scores within a three-minute span put BW ahead 14-7 with 9:02 still left in the first half.

BW senior Austin Fratalli, returning to the starting quarterback spot after missing the latter part of the 2008 season, tossed a pair of touchdown passes, a 2-yarder to junior DeVontae O’Bannion on fourth-and-goal on the first play of the second quarter and then a 6-yard score to junior Scott Rolen.

The touchdown by Rolen came after the Falcons recovered a fumbled kickoff return with senior Ashkan Hamidi pouncing on the loose ball.

Millbrook which had opened the scoring with 36-yard touchdown sprint by senor Rylan Banks on the Pioneers first drive of the season, answered the Falcons back-to-back scores with a 76-yard scoring drive, capped by a two-yard dive by Banks on fourth-and-goal.

“I was impressed with our heart and determination tonight,” said Millbrook coach Reed Prosser, who like Briar Woods lost a lot to graduation.

One of the returning Pioneers is Hartman who fielded a Fratalli punt on his own 35 and headed to the left towards Millbrooks sidelines where he picked up some nice blocking including blocks by Carter Barnett and Drew Braithwaite. The Falcons wanted the Pioneers flagged for 12 men on the field on the punt return but Hartman sailed into the end zone without any yellow on the field.

“Everybody came together tonight. We knew it was going to be a dogfight,” said Hartman.

Briar Woods looked to even the score after Hartman’s big return with Frattali hooking up with junior Michael Brownlee on a 21-yard swing pass to move the ball down to the Pioneer 30. Rolen went eight yards on a reverse and BW had the ball on the 22 with two minutes left in the contest.

A bad shotgun snap – an earlier botched snap had cost BW the ball inside Pioneer territory – sent BW back 13 yards and brought up 4th-and-15. Millbrook held and got the ball on downs.

Briar Woods burned its last two times outs and held Millbrook, getting the ball back one final time, on the Falcon 43 with 32.5 seconds to go. The Falcons were able to move the ball to the Millbrook 46 but four final passes went incomplete to end the game.

Brownlee gained 92 yards on 17 carries and the Falcons, with Frattali throwing for 122 yards, out-gained the Pioneers, 307-174 in total yardage. Briar Woods, however, was limited on the scoreboard, thanks in part to nine penalties for 65 yards and three turnovers.

The Falcon defense, other than the two scoring drives, held the Pioneers in check and Briar Woods was particularly vigilant on third down, stopping Millbrook eight times on 10 attempts.
