Softball: Woodgrove Takes Dulles District Tournament Title, 1-0, Over Briar Woods on Vennitti's 3-Hit Shutout

Purcellville (May 25, 2013) - Woodgrove High School junior Corinne Vennitti threw a 3-hit shutout and senior Taylor Kilgour drove in the game's only run as the Wolverines added the Dulles District softball tournament title to their regular-season crown with a 1-0 win over Briar Woods Friday in blustery conditions.

Woodgrove will host the winner of Monday's Loudoun County vs. James Wood game in a quarterfinal on Tuesday. Briar Woods is on the road Tuesday at Skyline in a quarterfinal.

Sterling (May 24, 2013) - The top four hitters in the Potomac Falls High School batting order combined for six hits, reached base eight times and scored all four runs in the Panthers 4-3 win over Heritage Friday night in the Dulles District baseball tournament championship. It was the Panthers third title in the last five years.

“The top of our order needs to get it started,” senior cleanup hitter Zachary Engelmann said. “We're knocking in runs. But it was a total team effort. We need the whole order to win games. Everyone is important and everyone showed up tonight.”

Baseball: Oh! O'Brien Does It Again! Second Walk-Off Hit of the Week by Potomac Falls Catcher Sends Panthers into Dulles Finals

(May 22, 2013) - Potomac Falls High School catcher Brendan "Oh My!" O'Brien has had quite a Dulles District tournament as the Panther junior followed his extra-inning walk-off double in a 5-4 quarterfinal win over Dominion with a dramatic two-out, walk-off two-run home run Tuesday night in a 6-4 semifinal win over Loudoun Valley.

The top-seeded Panthers (18-4) will now host the third-seeded Heritage Pride Thursday in the Dulles District finals with a 6 p.m. first pitch.

O’Brien's walk-off home run Tuesday couldn't have been possible without the two-run home run by Joey Larimer an inning earlier.

Softball: Woodgrove JR Rachel Harris Named Dulles District Player of the Year; Loudoun County SR Kiley Jacobus Named Pitcher of the Year

(May 21, 2013) - Woodgrove High School junior catcher Rachel Harris, who helped the Wolverines to the Dulles District regular-season softball title, was named the district's Player of the Year, and Loudoun County 4-year starter Kiley Jacobus was named the Pitcher of the Year in a vote of the district's coaches Monday night.

Loudoun Valley's Kristin Thurston, who helped the Vikings to a top four finish, was named the Coach of the Year.

Baseball: Potomac Falls SR Brandon Orbe Named Dulles District Player of the Year

(May 21, 2013) - Potomac Falls High School senior shortstop Brandon Orbe, who helped the Panthers win the Dulles District regular-season baseball title, was named the district's Player of the Year in a vote by the coaches Monday night.

Woodgrove coach Brad Bauder, who guided the Wolverines to second place finish despite some unexpected roster changes this season, was named the Coach of the Year.

Orbe led a group of six Panthers named to the first team and was one of two players to be an unanimous choice along with Woodgrove junior Matt Jeffery at the Utility position.

Girls Soccer: Loudoun County Sophomore Emily Littell Named Dulles District Player of the Year

(May 21, 2013) - Loudoun County High School sophomore Emily Littell has been named the Dulles District girls soccer Player of the Year in a vote of the district's coaches on Monday. Briar Woods's Ann Vierkorn, who led the Falcons to the regular-season title, has been named the Coach of the Year.

Littell's pick as Player of the Year highlighted a youth movement in the district with just 8 seniors among the 22 all-district selections. On the boys side, in comparison, 16 of the picks were seniors.

 Leesburg (May 17, 2013) – On a night full of extra innings in the Dulles District, the Heritage Pride, backed by a Zack Hopeck one-hit shutout, knocked off their crosstown rival Raiders 10-0 in a shortened five inning game.

“It was typical Hopeck,” Heritage coach Ryan Price said. “He was commanding the zone, keeping his pitch counts down, getting ahead of hitters and making them take defensive swings. He gave our defense all the opportunities to make plays behind him.”

Track and Field: Dead Heat! Heritage and Tuscarora Tie for Dulles District Girls Title with Woodgrove Just 5 Points Back! Loudoun County Boys Claim Crown

(May 17, 2013) - The closest Dulles District girls track and field meet in history finished Thursday with Leesburg rivals Heritage and Tuscarora in a dead heat for the title with 100 points each and host Woodgrove just five points back. On the boys side, Loudoun County claimed the crown, behind record-breaking performances by seniors Steven Graham and Patrick Joseph.

Continuing a spectacular spring that has seen him post some of the top times in the nation, Joseph was a triple winner -- taking first in the 800, 1600 and 3200 meter races. His 1:54.47 in the 800 was a meet record.

Graham set a meet record with a 48.50 in the 400 meters, a mark that had stood since 2004 when Broad Run's Michael Coleman turned a 48.81. Graham was also runner-up in the 100 and 200 meters.

The other two boys meet record broken were in the 100 meters where Briar Woods sophomore Brandon Polk ran a 10.82, and in the 4x800 relay where the Tuscarora boys ran 8:05.46 to snap Loudoun Valley's decade old record by some seven seconds. The Huskies also took first in the 4x100 relay as well at 44.30.

Loudoun County also got two field event wins with sophomore Antonio Jackson taking the high jump at 6-00 and the triple jump, soaring to 40-03.00.

Potomac Falls senior Eleen Fauteux had the girls meet lone record, breaking her own mark in the 300 meter hurdles with a 45.00. She also won the 100 hurdles with a 15.54.

Fauteux wasn't the only girl to take two gold medals as Woodgrove freshman Emma Gillies won both the 800 (1:24.10) and 1600 (5:22.20), and Briar Woods junior Hannah Keely won the long jump (15-06.50) and triple jump (32-03.50).

There was plenty of youth on the girls side with Loudoun County sophomore Shanice Galvin taking the  100 with a 12.93. Galvin was runner-up in the 200 to Dominion freshman Sidney Webb, who ran a 27.11. And Loudoun Valley freshman Alexis Randall motored to a 1:00.4 in the 400.

Heritage senior Alayna Bigalbal was key in the Pride's co-title as she finished runner-up in the 1600 to Gillies and she won the 3200 meters by clocking 11:59.88.

Tuscarora junior Madison Wells won high jump in a jump off at 5-00 with teammate senior Lori Kostka third and Heritage senior Courtney Glover second. As with any events, a point shift one way or another spelled the difference in the girls team title race.

Potomac Falls sophomore Amotayo Akinduro won the shot with a toss of 33-03.50 and

Dominion senior Monique Mitchell-Alexander won the discus with a mark of 100-10.

Three different schools won girls relays: Heritage took the 4x100 (50.33); Potomac Falls won the 4x400 (4:11.38); and Tuscarora was first in the 4x800 (10:06.99).

On the boys side Dominion senior Garrett Robinson won the 200 meters with a 22.41 time. Tuscarora junior Jordan Roach was the 110 hurdles with a 15.40 and Potomac Falls' Tommy Fort took the 300 hurdles with a 40.35.

The Potomac Falls boys won the 4x400 relay with a 3:29.43 time.

In the field events, Champe junior Quentin Jackson was the long jump with a leap of 20-5.00. Park View senior Cody Horvath won the shot put with a 46-04.00 mark and Tuscarora senior Brandon Chirinos was the discus at 145-01. (Complete results follow)

Boys Lacrosse: Loudoun County's Defense Steps Up Late as Unbeaten Raiders Gather First Ever Dulles District Tournament Title with 7-6 Win Over Dominion

Leesburg (May 15, 2013) – With just under two minutes to play, the Loudoun County High School boys’ lacrosse team made the most of a set of screens in front of the net as senior midfielder Jacob Averys sent a shot cruising into the back of the net to take a 7-6 lead over the Dominion Titans in the Dulles District Tournament championship game.

Averys’ goal would be the decider as the Raiders’ defense stepped up late en route to Loudoun County’s first ever district tournament championship, capping off an undefeated 11-0 run in the Dulles District -- an 8-0 regular season run followed by three tournament wins.

Tennis: Loudoun County's Jack McLister, Alexa Kling Take Dulles District Singles Titles; Freedom Boys Advance to Northwest Region Team Semifinals

(May 14, 2013) - Loudoun County High School sophomore Jack McLister and freshman Alexa Kling each won Dulles District tennis tournament singles titles on Monday.

McLister defeated Jake Stapleton of Dominion, 6-4, 6-2 in the finals and Kling defeated Dominique Huynh of Dominion, 6-3, 6-1 in the other finals.

The doubles tournament took place today. Last week the team tournament was held with Briar Woods sweeping both the boys and girls tournaments. The Falcons beat the regular-season champion Dominion Titans in the girls finals and in the boys finals it was the Falcons over Loudoun County.

Freedom One Win Away from AAA States

The Freedom High School boys tennis team continued its postseason run with a 5-1 win at Osbourn Park on Monday to move into the Northwest Region team tennis semifinals. The Eagles are one win away from making it to the AAA state tournament. They travel to Roanoke on Wednesday to face Western Valley District champion Patrick Henry.

Broad Run, the Cedar Run District regular-season boys champion, saw its season end with a tough 5-4 loss at home to Colonial Forge, which now faces Albemarle in the other semi Wednesday.

The Freedom girls had their excellent season end with a 5-1 loss to Franklin County.

Boys Lacrosse: Loudoun County's Sean Rogers, Michael Rexrode Named Dulles District Co-Players of the Year

(May 10, 2013) - Loudoun County High School's Sean Rogers and Michael Rexrode, who helped the unbeaten Raiders to the school's first ever Dulles District boys lacrosse regular season title, have been named the 2013 co-Players of the Year in a vote of the district's coaches. Tennis: Briar Woods, Loudoun County Advance to Today's Dulles Finals; Dominion Girls to Host Briar Woods/Tuscarora Winner

(May 10, 2013) - Dulles District regular-season boys tennis champion Briar Woods remained on unbeaten on the season with a 5-0 win over Dominion Thursday in the district tournament semifinals. The Falcons (16-0) will host Loudoun County (15-1) at 3 p.m. in the finals.

The Raiders lone loss on the season was on April 25 to the Falcons, 6-3.

In the girls tournament, regular-season champion Dominion (16-1) defeated Loudoun County, 5-0, to advance to today's finals. The Titans will host the winner of Briar Woods (11-4) vs. Tuscarora (14-2) at 3 p.m. Those two teams were locked at 4-4 yesterday when their match was called due to weather. They took to the courts today at 1 p.m. to finish the No. 3 doubles match to determine which team advances.

Baseball: Bowman Gets Plenty of Run Support as the Wolverines Topple Top-Seeded Panthers

Purcellville (May 8, 2013) – The Woodgrove High School Wolverines’ seven-run first inning proved to be plenty of support for their starting pitcher Kaleb Bowman who gave up one just unearned run while surrendering two hits through six innings in a 9-1 win over Dulles District baseball’s first place squad,  Potomac Falls (14-4 overall, 12-2 in the district).

“Kaleb has been this way all year for us,” Woodgrove’s head coach Brad Bauder said of the sophomore. “He knows exactly what it takes to keep us in the game and getting him some run support early made him want to win even more.”
