News: 67 Loudoun County Public Schools Students Attending Governor's School

(July 9, 2013) - Sixty-seven Loudoun County Public Schools students are attending the 2013 Governor's School program, an intensive four-week educational experience for gifted students that takes place during July on college and university campuses throughout Virginia. 

The Governor's School provides rising juniors and seniors with a program of intensive instruction in visual and performing arts, engineering, humanities, mathematics, science and technology, agriculture, and life sciences and medicine.

News: Loudoun County Sheriff's Investigates Reported Assault of 11-Year-old Girl on Mink Meadows in South Riding

(July 3, 2013) - The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a reported assault that occurred Tuesday evening in the South Riding, VA area.

Around 7:45 p.m., an 11-year-old child was walking in the area of the 43600 block of Mink Meadows Street when she was grabbed by an unknown male. The subject was described as Hispanic with dark hair (messy) and was wearing a dark hoodie and torn jeans. The child ran home to safety and did not require medical treatment.

(June 29, 2013) - Three suspects are in custody and authorities seek a fourth suspect following two armed robberies that occurred during the early morning hours on Saturday in the Sterling, VA area.

News: The Last Original Broad Run Faculty Member, Joann Pearson, Retires

JoAnn Pearson is reflecting on her retirement from Broad Run High School after 44 years.

“Nobody here will have the memories from all these years. Nobody will know who Mr. McBride was or who Wayne Griffith was. They’ll look at those pictures in the library and say ‘Who were those old men?’ There will be nobody here who has the history. That’s what’s hard about it… I know it happens at other schools, but I think we have a whole lot more history than other schools.” (In case you were wondering, Jim McBride was Broad Run’s original principal and Griffith was its second.)

Pearson wasn’t there the day Broad Run opened in 1969, but came on board at the beginning of second semester as a replacement for Betty Hatrick (the wife of now-Superintendent Edgar B. Hatrick III.) Pearson was coming home from two years in Germany where her husband, Sonny, was stationed with the Army. (She was teaching GED classes there for the University of Maryland.)

(June 28, 2013) - The Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) Class of 2013 earned $34,931,604 in scholarships, an increase from the $28,824,730 earned by the Class of 2012.

News: Loudoun County Sheriff's Investigates Death of Ashburn Female on House Arrest

(June 28, 2013) - An Ashburn, Virginia, woman on a court ordered home incarceration was found unconscious in her home and later passed away on June 24.

Sarena L. Carroll, 24, was sentenced on larceny charges and ordered by the courts to serve an at home incarceration. On Monday, a Sheriff’s Office Correctional Deputy was performing a residential visit at Carroll’s home located in the 44200 block of Big Trail Terrace. The deputy made several attempts to contact Carroll by knocking on her door and via the telephone.

News: Loudoun County Sheriff's Plans Sobriety Checkpoint for Friday, June 28

(June 28, 2013) - The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office will conduct a sobriety checkpoint on Friday, June 28th.

“Our goal is to ensure the roads are safe for all motorists,” said Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman. “The checkpoints are designed to discourage impaired driving and we are asking drivers to make the smart choice, don’t drink and drive.

Members of the Sheriff’s Office Auxiliary Unit and volunteers from the Loudoun Chapter of MADD will assist with the checkpoint.

News: Loudoun County Public Schools Superintendent Hatrick to Step Down After Coming School Year; Read Full Text of Retirement Announcement

(June 27, 2013) - Loudoun County Public School Edgar B. Hatrick III announced earlier this month he would retire at the end of the 2013-14 school year. He has been the school district's leader since 1991 and a graduate of Loudoun County High School, he has been working in the school system since 1967.

When Hatrick helped open Broad Run High School in 1969 there was just 9,525 students total in the entire school system and that number had only increased to 15,118 by the time he took over as superintendent in 1991. Since then, Loudoun's student population has skyrocked to 68,289 students this past year. Here is the full text of Hatrick's retirement letter:

News: Loudoun County Offers Public Employees Homeownership Grant Program

(June 17, 2013) - Loudoun County's Public Employee Homeownership Grant Program assists low-to moderate-income public employees in purchasing a home in Loudoun County. The program offers a secured loan to income-eligible employees of the Loudoun County Government, including the Courts and Constitutional Officers; and the Loudoun County Public Schools.

(June 4, 2013) - It took Bob Farren and VIP Sports & Entertainment nearly 12 years but their dream of a sports stadium in Ashburn took a giant step towards reality Tuesday with the official groundbreaking for the project at One Loudoun.

The stadium at the immediate southwest corner of the Route 7 and Loudoun County Parkway interchange will house both the professional baseball Loudoun Hounds as well as the professional soccer Virginia Cavalry FC clubs.

"This is a long-overdue moment in the history of VIP Sports & Entertainment and beginning construction on the Ballpark at One Loudoun is another major milestone for the organization," said Farren, founding President and CEO of VIP. "We are now within sight of the finish line: Opening Day in 2014. I am thankful to our many wonderful business partners, our civic leaders and most importantly our legions of excited fans for making this sports landmark a reality in Loudoun."

In other news from the groundbreaking, it was announced that the stadium would be named Edelman Financial Field, after the Northern Virginia financial services powerhouse.

News: Good Samaritan Carjaked in Lansdowne by 63-year-old Woman

(May 30, 2013) - While most of the attention in Loudoun County Wednesday was focused on the fatal shooting at Costco in Sterling, there was a bizarre carjacking just before 10 p.m. in Lansdowne where a 24-year-old Ashburn man had his "Good Samaritan" act turn into a carjacking when a 63-year-old Leesburg woman reportedly pulled a knife on him and took his car.

Mary C. Hardy, 63, of Leesburg, was charged with carjacking and public intoxication after a reported carjacking in the area of Merchant Mill Terrace and Marvins Mill Terrace in Lansdowne. Deputies responded to the area after they received a report from the victim, a 24-year-old Ashburn man, who reported that he offered a ride to a female who later pulled a knife and took his vehicle.

News: Victim in Fatal Shooting at Costco by Loudoun Sheriff's Deputy Identified as 38-year-old Mhai Scott

(May 30, 2013) - The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office is investigating a deputy related fatal shooting at a warehouse store in Sterling Tuesday. The victim has been identified as Mhai Scott, 38, of Sterling.

Around 3 p.m. the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a disorderly subject at the Costco located in the 21300 block of Price Cascades Plaza. The suspect, identified as Scott was reportedly wielding a knife and scissors and threatening employees at the store.

News: Sterling Woman Charged with First Degree Murder in Death of Her Husband on Blossom Drive

Sterling (May 18, 2013) - The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office reports that Rosangela Spradling, 42, of Sterling has been charged with first degree murder and is being held at the Loudoun County Detention Center without bond after the shooting of her husband, Steven Spradling, 52, in their home in the 21700 block of Blossom Drive.

News: Detour Ahead! Sycolin Road in Leesburg to be Closed at Route 7/15 Bypass for 14 Months as Overpass is Built

(May 16, 2013) - Warning! Detour Ahead! Starting on June 8, 2013, the traffic situation in Leesburg will get a little tougher -- or better depending on where you are headed -- as Sycolin Road is closed at the Route 7/15 Bypass for 14 months while an overpass is constructed.

The immediate good news is that on June 8 the traffic signal at the Leesburg Bypass and Sycolin Road will be removed permanently, which will help the rush hour traffic flow through Leesburg. For those who live on either side of the bypass at Sycolin Road, however, things will be tougher as a detour will be needed to get to the other side of the road.

Throughout the metropolitan Washington region, thousands of bicyclists  will take place in this annual Bike to Work Day event, enjoying free t-shirts, refreshments and giveaways at more than 50 pit stops.
