Redskins: Playoff Tickets Sold Out for Seattle Game

Ashburn (Dec. 31, 2012) – The Washington Redskins announced today tickets to the NFC Wild Card Weekend playoff game against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, Jan. 6 are sold out. In the event there are player or visitor team ticket returns, fans are encouraged to check with Ticketmaster for availability.

Kickoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Fans are encouraged to arrive early to avoid traffic and enjoy the 1 p.m. playoff games.

Boys Lacrosse: Dominion Teamed up with 'TroopTreats' for Holiday Service Project

Sterling (Dec. 31, 2012) - The Dominion High School boys lacrosse team teamed up earilier this month with 'TroopTreats' for the program's Holiday Service project.

The Titans met on Dec. 12 to write 200 TroopTreat cards thanking our troops -- who were not home with their loved ones for the holidays -- for their service, and sacrifices and wishing them Happy Holidays!

Softball: 14U Ashburn Shooting Stars Gold Fastpitch Reaches No. 1 Ranking in Nation

(Dec. 31, 2012) - Just before the holidays hit the Ashburn Shooting Stars Gold Fastpitch softball team got an early present as the 14U team was ranked No. 1 in the nation by Youth1.com.

Youth1 in ranking the team No. 1 said: "Taking the top spot for 14U is the Ashburn Shooting Stars Gold, who, as a 12U team, won the 12U Eastern World Series over the summer in Salisbury, Maryland. Now a 14U team, the Ashburn Shooting Stars is 23-3-1 on the fall season and is once again World Series Qualified. Under the management of Rick McCarty, the team picked up a number of 1st place finishes this fall including wins at the Red Raider SoftballFEST (5-0), Potomac River Clash NIT (5-1), Heartbreakers Fall Classic (4-0-1), and at the Breast Cancer Awareness NIT (5-1).

Boys Lacrosse: Dominion SR Cody Farmer to Play at Stevenson University

Sterling (Dec. 30, 2012) - Dominion High School senior Cody Farmer has committed to play men's lacrosse next year at NCAA Division III Stevenson University in Maryland. Farmer will join his older brother Troy, a freshman at Stevenson, on the Mustangs roster.

Farmer helped Dominion make its first ever VHSL state tournament appearance in 2012 as a junior. Farmer's club team is Madlax.

Wrestling: Loudoun County Takes Title in New Jersey after Second Place Finish at Skyline

Leesburg (Dec. 30, 2012) The Loudoun County High School wrestling team had a very successful holiday break starting with a 5-1 mark and second place finish at the Appalachian Duals at Skyline. The best was yet to come.

The Raiders had a few days off, then went back to action in Collingswood, NJ for their annual Christmas Tournament. The team left for New Jersey on Dec. 26 at 6 a.m. The team arrived around 9:30, had a 2 hour practice then headed off to Philadelphia to run the "Rocky steps" at the Philadelphia Art Museum. 

Raiders took to the mat on Dec. 27 and had a roller coaster day of ups & downs but pulled through and sent six into the finals: 126 Matt Sun, 138 Logan Smith, 160 Hunter Day, 182 Alex Reader, 195 Cory Dickey, and 220 Kyle Schlue. 

The team race was very tight with the top three teams all within distance to win. The Raiders were behind with two weight classes to wrestle but the big guys came through with pins by Dickey at 195 and Schlue at 220 to secure the team title with 181.5 points.

Wrestling: Potomac Falls to Host "Falls for the Fallen" on Jan. 3 to Raise Funds for Doug Green Memorial Garden

Potomac Falls (Dec. 30, 2012) - The Potomac Falls High School wrestling program will host a Dulles District match on Thursday Jan. 3, 2013 against Heritage and Briar Woods. The Panthers wrestlers have chosen to use this event as an opportunity to raise money for the cause of remembering Potomac Falls alumni Douglas J. Green (‘06), who was killed in action in Afghanistan in August of 2011.

Football: Heritage's Chris Aguemon is Ivy League Bound, to Play at Dartmouth

Leesburg (Dec. 30, 2012) - Just before Christmas, Heritage High School senior Chris Aguemon announced that he has committed to play football next year in the Ivy League at Dartmouth College. Aguemon says he will make the transition from outside linebacker to strong safety at the college level.

Cross Country: Foxcroft JR Edgemond Earns All-State Honors

(Dec. 30, 2012) - Foxcroft School's Amy Edgemond, who had never run competitively before this fall, finished 18th at the VISAA Cross-Country Championships last month to earn All-State honors. Edgemond, a junior from Reston, is believed to be the first Foxcroft athlete to ever be named All State in cross country.

Boys Basketball: Bulldogs Bounce Back, Beating Broad Run 82-66 in Battle of 'Burn

Ashburn (Dec. 30, 2012) - After starting the Honda of Dulles Battle of Ashburn Tournament with a 12 point loss against Briar Woods on Friday night, the Stone Bridge High School boys basketball team bounced back and defeated Broad Run on Saturday 82-66 after outscoring the Spartans 31-13 in the fourth quarter.

The Bulldogs (3-8 record) shot 23 of 31 from the free throw line, including 15 of 17 from the line in the final quarter, to conclude their come from behind victory against the Spartans (4-6). Jason Jolly, Emad Rahman and Jimmy Higgins combined for 47 points and Jon Allen's double-double included 16 big boards in the win for Stone Bridge.

Girls Basketball: Prince Paves Way for Stone Bridge Overtime Win Over Broad Run

 Ashburn (Dec. 30, 2012) - Stone High School senior guard Niki Prince scored a game-high 28 points with 10 rebounds and had the assist on junior Megan Della Penna's basket with just under 30 seconds left Saturday that sent the Bulldogs and Broad Run girls into overtime on the final night of the Honda of Dulles Battle of Ashburn basketball tournament.

It was all Stone Bridge (7-4 record) in overtime as the Bulldogs out-scored the Spartans (7-6), 14-5, for a 55-46 victory.

Leading at halftime 25-22, Stone Bridge quickly gave up their lead as Broad Run dominated the beginning of the third quarter leading at one point by eight points. Spartan senior guard Ellie Ferguson (20 points, 6 rebounds) led her team, knocking down every third quarter shot she attempted.

Middleburg (Dec. 30, 2012) - Eight Foxcroft athletes from three sports have received All-Delaney Athletic Conference honors for their outstanding performance in fall competition.

Field hockey topped the list as five members of the state tournament finalist Foxcroft team received first-team All-DAC honors and another player received second-team mention.

Volleyball and cross country each had one athlete selected for all-DAC honors.

Baseball: Aldie Senators to Play Home Games at Champe High School

Aldie (Dec. 29, 2012) - Beginning with the 2013 Valley Baseball League season, the Aldie Senators (formerly known as the Haymarket Senators) will play all of their home games at John Champe High School.

The Aldie Senators will open their 2013 VBL season at home against the Front Royal Cardinals on May 31, 2013. The Senators previously played their home games at Battlefield High School.

Ashburn (Dec. 28, 2012) – The Briar Woods High School boys basketball team hustled and defended their way to a 64-52 win over Stone Bridge Friday in the second night of the Honda of Dulles Battle of Ashburn Tournament.

Briar Woods (3-4 record) and Stone Bridge (2-8) matched up pretty evenly throughout the first half, but late in the second quarter Falcons’ senior forward Jake Ryan (27 points, 6 rebounds) got hot, connecting on baskets on four of Briar Woods’ last five possessions of the half.

Girls Basketball: Stone Bridge's Della Penna Dominates the Boards in Bulldogs Win Over Briar Woods

Ashburn (Dec. 28, 2012) – Junior forward Megan Della Penna (12 rebounds, 10 offensive) and the rest of the Stone Bridge High School girls basketball team dominated the boards on Friday night at Briar Woods in a one-sided 47-7 victory in the second round of the Honda of Dulles Battle of Ashburn.

The Bulldogs (6-4) grabbed 23 offensive rebounds, one more than the Falcons (1-10) total rebound count of 22. Stone Bridge senior point guard Niki Prince and junior forward Annie Bokulic led all scorers with eight points each.

Boys Basketball: Broad Run Bench Scores 58 as Spartans Run By Briar Woods, 85-63, in Battle of Ashburn

Ashburn (Dec. 27, 2012) - Broad Run High School's offensive execution and defensive tenacity allowed for transition baskets and an advantage in ball control against Briar Woods in the first round of the Honda of Dulles Battle of Ashburn Tournament on Thursday night. The Spartans secured the victory, 85-63, thanks to a kick start from their bench.

Starting the game on the poor end of a 10-4 run, the Broad Run starters looked out-matched and out of condition so Spartans head coach John Costello quickly pulled all five starters. Entering the game were senior Mitch Pittman, juniors Khiorie Stewart, Justin Hart and Chris Coggins and freshman Jaleel Robinson ... and they made a powerful statement. Stewart led all scorers with a season-high 26 points, while Coggins finished with 18 points, 12 points more than his previous season high.

Girls Basketball: Broad Run Forces 22 Turnovers to Blow by Briar Woods, 49-21, in Battle of Ashburn Opener

Ashburn (Dec. 27, 2012) - In the first varsity level matchup of the Honda of Dulles Battle of Ashburn basketball tournament on Thursday, the Broad Run High School girls forced 22 turnovers and wrapped up an easy 49-21 victory over Briar Woods.

The Spartans (7-5 overall) were  led by senior guard Ellie Ferguson (14 points) and freshman forward Mariah Leonard (8 points, 11 rebounds, 5 steals). Broad Run scored early and often, seeing double digit scoring in the first three quarters.

Boys Basketball: Strong Second Half Leads Loudoun Valley to 61-54 Win Over Heritage

Purcellville (Dec. 26, 2012) - A combination of excellent rebounding, stellar 3-point shooting and an advantage at the foul line helped undefeated Loudoun Valley High School rally past Heritage Friday night, 61-54, in a highly anticipated Dulles District game. The Vikings’ (6-0, 9-0) timely scoring came in the second half as they outscored the Pride (4-3, 8-3) 32-22 after trailing 32-29 at the half.

Led by junior Paul Rowley (21 points, 9 rebounds) and senior Josh Grimard (17 points, 8 rebounds), Loudoun Valley dominated the offensive boards in the first half scoring on four second chance opportunities early, while limiting Heritage to only six total offensive rebounds on the game.

Ashburn (Dec. 26, 2012) - Broad Run High School held a college signing on December 11th, 2012 for one of its most talented players to come through the Spartan girls lacrosse program in years. Senior Heidi Smith has committed to play NCAA Division I lacrosse for the University of Louisville Cardinals in Kentucky.

Smith has started for the Spartans since the day she stepped on the lacrosse field at the Broad Run campus. As a freshman she started at lower defense and as her career blossomed she became the focal point of the team as its starting center of the past several years.

In 2012, Smith led the Spartans back into the Regional’s for the first time since 2009. She led the team with 72 goals and 20 assists. Her game was not just on the offensive end.

Her coach Sean Duritsa said: “She is the best all around player in the county, region, and beyond. There is nothing on the lacrosse field that she cannot do! She is equally talented on offense as on defense, she does everything great. Heidi is a true leader on and off the field.”

Ashburn (Dec. 26, 2012) - The 5th Annual Honda of Dulles Battle of Ashburn holiday basketball tournament tips off Thursday, Dec. 27 with six games at Broad Run High School. Over the course of the 3-day tournament, Ashburn's three high schools -- Briar Woods, Broad Run and Stone Bridge -- will take turns hosting boys and girls freshman, JV and varsity contests.

Ticket prices are $6 for the day with no school passes accepted.

Swim: Top 20 Girls Times 2012-13 Season

(Dec. 21, 2012) - Just in time for Saturday's slate of high school swim meets, Viva Loudoun has released its first Top Swim Times for girls swimming for the 2012-13 season. This year we have expanded our ranking to 20 swimmers in each event.

Dominion sits on top of two relays (200 free, 400 free) with Heritage leading the 200 medley relay.

Stone Bridge's Andi Mack and Heritage's Kaleigh Rosenburg dominate the top times with Mack posting best times in the 50, 100, 200 and 500 freestyle races and Rosenburg tops in the 200 IM, 100 fly and 100 breast. Only Heritage's Carrie Lee (100 back) breaks up the Andi and Kaleigh monolopoly.

(Dec. 21, 2012) - Just in time for Saturday's slate of high school swim meets, Viva Loudoun has released its first Top Swim Times for boys swimming for the 2012-13 season. This year we have expanded our ranking to 20 swimmers in each event.

Potomac Falls sits on top of two relays (200 medley, 400 free) with Freedom leading the 200 free relay.

Five swimmers from five different high schools are leading events with Potomac Falls' William Lin tops in three (200 IM, 500 free, 100 breast) and Stone Bridge's Nicholas Kost with the best time in two events (200 free, 100 free). Other leaders: Freedom's Michael Harmon (50 free), Briar Woods' Brennan Maxwell (100 fly) and Dominion's Aidan O'Hara (100 back).

Girls Basketball: Loudoun County, Woodgrove Both 6-0 in Dulles Play

(Dec. 19, 2012) - Loudoun County and Woodgrove, the top two high school girls basketball teams from the Dulles District a year ago, continue on their Jan. 4, 2013 collision course as both the Raiders and Wolverines won Tuesday to improve to 6-0 on the district season. The two teams won't face each other until the Friday after the holiday break.

Loudoun County (8-0 overall) beat Park View (1-5 in district), 57-31, while Woodgrove (7-1 overall) ran by first-year Champe (1-4 in district), 82-14.

Chloe Knox (11 points) and Kat Kushner (10 points) led the Raiders while Brittney Williams had a team-high seven points for the Patriots.

Tuscarora sits in third at 5-1 after a 50-42 win over Dominion (1-4). Potomac Falls (4-2) is a game back after beating Heritage, 64-40. Potomac Falls was led by Patricia Mook with 15 points and 10 rebounds and Teal Reynolds had 14 points an nine boards and Dominique White added 14 points.

The Pride are 2-4. Heritage was led by Kayla Tibss' 18 points.

Loudoun Valley improved to 2-3 with a 38-23 win over Briar Woods (0-5). Kirsten Graves and Jerica Mingo each scored seven points for Valley. Sammy Barta and Morgan Luster did the same for Champe.

In the Cedar Run, Broad Run won its district opener with a 55-51 win over Osbourn. Ellie Ferguson led the Spartans with 21 and Alyssa Cabellos added 15 while Mariah Leonard scored 14. Freedom was edged by Patriot, 43-40.


 

Boys Basketball: Loudoun Valley Only Unbeaten Team Left in Dulles District

(Dec. 19, 2012) - Less than a third into the big 18-game Dulles District schedule and the Loudoun Valley High School boys basketball team is the only squad unbeaten in district play at 4-0. And at 7-0 the Vikings are also the area's only undefeated team overall.

Valley beat Briar Woods Tuesday, 62-41, with Josh Grimard scoring 22 and Paul Rowley adding 19. The Falcons are 1-1 in district after a late start to the season due to the football playoffs. Spencer Hatcher led  Briar Woods with 17.

Tuscarora (4-1 in district) is a half-game behind the Vikings after Dominion knocked off the Huskies Tuesday, 60-58, on sophomore guard Lael Davis' buzzer beater. Davis finished with 18 points and junior Milad Alaiaen had 17 for the Titans (3-2 in district) in the big win. Tuscarora was led by Justin Aird and A.J. Robinson with 14 each and Jordan Roach scored 12.

Heritage (4-2) sits in third after knocking off Potomac Falls (3-2) on Tuesday, 61-58. Jesse Case and Mister Lewis each had 16 for the Pride and Zach Coffman added 14. Wanya Allen led the Panthers with 23.

Sitting with Dominion and Potomac Falls at 3-2 is Loudoun County, a 59-47 winner over Park View (1-5) Tuesday. The Raiders were led by Michael Anderson with 19 and Quan Stinger added 13. Park View was led by Cody Horvath (14) and Brenden Foley (13).

Woodgrove (1-4) won for the first time on the year with a 69-45 victory over first-year Champe. Tyler Moore and Davie Wick each scored 10 points for the Wolverines who had 13 players find the scorebook. Champe was led by Zachary Burdick's 23.

In Cedar Run action, both Broad Run and Freedom won Tuesday. The Spartans beat Osbourn, 64-41, with Bryce Humphrey scoring 12 and Khiorie Stewart scoring 10. Freedom beat Patriot, 57-40, with Darren Hawkins scoring 20 and Roderick Smith adding 17.

News: Broad Run Boys JV Basketball Honors Sandy Hook Victims

(Dec. 19, 2012) - The tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut last week has affected us all and some local teams are finding ways to remember the victims. Last night the Broad Run High School boys JV basketball team wore ankle bands ("In Memory of S.H.E.S. Victims 12-14-12) to remember those who lost their lives.

Wrestling: Woodgrove Earns First Title in Program History with Win at Sterling Lions McGowen Invitational

(Dec. 19, 2012) - The Woodgrove High School wrestling team earned their first tournament title in the program's history by winning the Sterling Lions McGowen Invitational Wrestling Tournament this past weekend at Park View.

Wolverine coach Scott Fortney said it was "a well balanced effort with 10 of the 12 wrestlers who participated in the top four of the 9-team tournament."

The Wolverines' record now stands at 8-5 after defeating Broad Run 52-29, John Champe 54-15 and losing a close match to Brentville District 36-42 last Thursday at John Champe.

News: Dominion Seeks Softball Coach for Spring; Titans Also Need Assistant Girls Soccer, Track and Field Coaches

(Dec. 19, 2012) - Dominion High School is seeking a head softball coach for the spring season. The Titans are also looking for an assistant girls soccer coach as well as an assistant track and field coach. Wrestling: Host Loudoun County Takes 3rd at Duals for Warriors Won by Warren County

Leesburg (Dec. 17, 2012) - A five round tournament consisting of both private and public high schools from Virginia and Maryland proved to be a tall task  for Loudoun County public high schools as Warren County High School took down Paul VI Catholic High School 57-24 in the championship match of the inaugural “Duals for the Warriors” wrestling tournament hosted by Loudoun County High School. The host Raiders were third.

Redskins: Season Ticket Holders First in Line for Possible Playoff Tickets

Ashburn (Dec. 17, 2012) – Per NFL policy regarding the post season, the Washington Redskins announced today that the team’s season ticket holders will be the first to have the opportunity to secure tickets to Wild Card Weekend if the Redskins host a postseason game. The deadline for season ticket holders to reserve their playoff tickets is Thursday, Dec. 27. Playoff tickets, if available, will go on sale to the general public on Saturday, Dec. 29.

In appreciation to our loyal season ticket holders, the Redskins have held general admission ticket prices for the Wild Card game the same as the regular season for almost 95 percent of season ticket holders.

News: Shooting in Sterling Sunday Sends One to Hospital with Multiple Wounds

(Dec. 17, 20212) - The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office responded to a shooting at a residence in the 20 block of Gannon Way in Sterling, Virginia.

Deputies responded to the residence around 4:40 p.m. on December 16th and discovered a 22-year-old male suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. At this point in the investigation it is believed there were two suspects who fled the scene prior to the arrival of law enforcement. It is believed the suspects were known to the victim and it appears the victim was targeted. The shooting does not appear to be a random act.

Game Notes: Redskins in First Place in NFC East After 15 Weeks for First Time Since 1999

(Dec. 17, 2012) - The Redskins improved to 8-6 this season with a 38-21 win against the Cleveland Browns in front of an announced crowd of 65,083 people at Cleveland Browns Stadium in Week 15.

With an 8-6 record, the Redskins are tied with the New York Giants atop the NFC East as of the conclusion of Sunday’s 1 p.m. games. Washington holds the tiebreaker over New York by virtue of the team’s divisional records (3-1 for Washington, 2-3 for New York).

Washington has a share of first place in the NFC East after 15 weeks for the first time since 1999. More game notes:

News: LCSO Investigating Pedestrian Struck and Killed Attempting to Cross Route 28; 3rd Such Fatality in Month

(Dec. 16, 2012) - It has been a dangerous holiday season for pedestrians on the Loudoun roadways as a third fatality within a month was recorded early Sunday morning, Dec. 16, when a female was struck and killed while attempting to cross Route 28 in the area of Route 267.

Loudoun County Sheriff's Deputies responded to the area around 3:30 a.m. December 16th for a report of a female that was struck while attempting to cross Route 28. The victim lost her life at the scene. The victim has not been positively identified at this time.

Members of the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office Crash Reconstruction Unit are expected to clear the scene shortly.

Basketball: T2RBL Give Back Tournament Concludes Today with 8 Championships

(Dec. 15, 2012) - The first T2RBL Holiday "Give Back" Tip Off Basketball Tournament, which featured 900 players from the league's 3rd thru 8th grade house league teams concludes with eight championship games at Stone Hill Middle School.

 League organizers decided to tip off the season in a different way than in years past and coincide the new event with a food drive as well as donations in the form of daily admission on the weekends to help raise money for the DiGiovanni children's scholarship -- children who played in the league, who had their father pass away last year in an accident at the Beaver Dam Reservoir.

News: Loudoun Special Olympics Basketball Tournament Set for Jan. 5 Needs Volunteers

(Dec. 14, 2012) - Loudoun Special Olympics will hold a major basketball tournament on Jan. 5 at four area schools -- including Heritage, Loudoun County and Tuscarora high schools -- and volunteers are needed.

News: Loudoun County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Hatrick Releases Message on School Safety After Today's Tragedy in Connecticut

To the Loudoun County Public Schools Community,

In the wake of today’s tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, I wanted to reach out to you and detail what we do in an effort to make our schools secure.

First, I want you to know that Loudoun’s security planning predates the Columbine tragedy. We have worked with law enforcement officials for more than a decade to make our schools as secure as possible, while still recognizing that we are an institution of public education.

After the September 11th attacks we severely limited access to our schools by locking and monitoring entrances. We want to ensure that only people who have legitimate business in our schools are allowed inside. Loudoun’s schools use the AiPhone system, secure-card access, cameras and DVR-recording equipment to monitor access and activities in and around our schools.

Today, I have sent a memorandum to our principals to make sure they review and reinforce all school security measures that are in place, particularly with regard to controlling access to our schools.

Wrestling: Loudoun County's "Duals for the Warriors" to Raise Funds for Wounded Warrior Project; Sgt. Anthony Rico to be Honored

Leesburg (Dec. 14, 2012) - Loudoun County High School will host the inaugural "Duals for the Warriors" Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012 with all the money raised from t-shirt sales at the wrestling meet going to the Wounded Warrior Project. Wrestling starts at 9 a.m. and goes all day.

The Raiders will also honor a veteran who was wounded while serving. The first honoree is Sgt Anthony Rico, who served with Loudoun County wrestling coach Joel Caruso.

"I had the honor to serve with Sgt Rico in the US Army. Fresh out of basic training he came to my squad," said Caruso. "At first I thought he was very cocky and as his squad leader Rico was doing a lot of push-ups ... his cockiness was really his confidence and quickly, Rico became my Team Leader."

Caruso continued: " He showed great leadership and always pushed to soldiers to be better."

I was your average kid, a bit rebellious coming out of High School, not real sure what I was going to do with my life. In Jun-2000 an Army recruiter came to my door and asked if I wanted to see the world. At the time I had nothing better going on in my life and no real plans on which college I would attend. In Oct-2000 I departed in my first airplane ride over to Fort Benning, Ga, home of the Infantry, Boy was I in for a surprise.

Redskins: Shanahan Says Griffin's Condition Continues to Improve

(Dec. 13, 2012) - Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan told the media Thursday that rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III's condition continues to improve as he looks to recover from the big hit that knocked him out of Sunday's game against Baltimore. RG3's chances of starting against Cleveland are most likely a gameday decision, according to Shanahan.

Boys Soccer: Briar Woods Keeper Kent Legg Commits to D2 Power Southern New Hampshire University

Ashburn (Dec. 13, 2012) - Kent Legg, senior goalkeeper at Briar Woods High School, committed this week to play men's soccer next year for Southern New Hampshire University, which finished 5th in the nation in NCAA Division II this year with a 19-4 record.

Last spring Legg recorded a 0.62 goals against percentage with six shutouts, working on his seventh shutout and fourth in a row when he suffered a broken tibia while making a save against Heritage in the team's second to last game of the regular season.

News: Armed Bandit in Mask and Florida State Hoodie Hits Sterling Bank

(Dec. 13, 2012) - The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office is investigating an armed bank robbery in the Community Plaza in Sterling that took place this morning.

ID this masked bank robber

The suspect entered the Wells Fargo bank around 10:20 a.m. on Thursday, December 13, 2012, brandished a firearm and demanded cash. The suspect is described as a male and was wearing a mask and a maroon Florida State sweatshirt at the time of the robbery. The suspect fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash. No one was injured during the robbery.

(Dec. 13, 2012) - Heritage High School will hold a ceremony for senior Dariel Montanez at 1:45 p.m. Friday. Montanez is committed to playing women's volleyball next year at NCAA Division II Edinboro University in Pennsylvania.

Baseball: Stone Bridge SR Marcus Schreiber to Play at King College in Tennessee

(Dec. 13, 2012) - Stone Bridge High School senior Marcus Schreiber has committed to play baseball next year at NCAA Division II King College in Bristol, Tenn.

The 6-foot-2 Schreiber can pitch, play first base and outfield.
"Marcus is a very toolsy left handed hitting outfielder with a huge upside," said King College coach Blaine Brown. "He plays for one of the best travel teams on the East Coast. Every time we have seen Marcus he has gotten better. His ceiling is unlimited and when he puts it all together his future is very bright."

Wharton, N.J. (December 12, 2012) - The U.S. Army All-American Bowl Selection Committee has announced Stone Bridge High School senior quarterback Ryan Burns as one of the eight nominees for the prestigious Felix “Doc” Blanchard and Glenn Davis Awards. Both renowned Army Football icons, Glenn Davis and Felix “Doc” Blanchard were college football’s great running back tandem while playing on the Army football team in the 1940s. The awards will be announced at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl Awards Dinner on January 4, 2013, in San Antonio.

Football: On Top! Mtneer32 Wins You Pick'Em Contest!; LTM's Carl "The Kat" Lukat Wins Media Race!

(Dec. 13, 2012) - Wow! Was there ever any doubt about our season-long Viva Loudoun high school football You Pick'Em contest winner. Mtneer32 of Charles Town opened the year by going a perfect 10-0 in three of he first four weeks and never looked back.

Overall, Mtneer32 went 157-31 and claims the $100 first prize with $100 to the high school of their choice!

Runner-up was JAGman of Ashburn ($50) and we had a tie for third and in the holiday spirit, both players -- BallCoach9 and TBreeden of Purcellville -- will each get $25. In all 299 fans played this season!

In the LoCo Media Experts race Carl "Kitty Kat" Lukat of the Loudoun Times-Mirror wrapped up the LoCo Media Expert title with a 149-39 season, three games better than Gameday's Andy "Don't Call Me Isaac" Hayes. We should note that by the end of the contest, last year's winner, WashPost's Matt Brooks "Oh, Brother" had checked himself into a witness relocation program in order to avoid handing over his crown to the Kat.

Baseball: VHSL Adopts New Pitching Limits

(Dec. 12, 2012) - The Virginia High School League has approved new pitching limits for the coming spring season with pitchers being limited to nine innings in one day and no more than 14 innings of work in a 7-day span.

Previously pitchers were limited to 10 innings of work in two consecutive days.

The trickiest part of the new rules is they are much more complex than the previous limits with different requirements for days of rest depending on if a pitcher goes one inning, two to three innings, four to seven innings or eight to nine innings in his initial outing to start the 7-day span.

News: It's a Wrap! VHSL Adopts Final Conference Alignment Plan for 2013-14 and 2014-15 Cycle

(Dec. 11, 2012) - Just about a year after the Virginia High School League proposed an overhaul of its classification and playoff system, final approval was given by the Executive Committee Monday for a Conference Alignment plan for 2013-14 and 2014-15 two-year school cycle.

The plan basically doubles classifications for Virginia public high school sports from three to six levels and starts postseason play at a new conference level. Currently only football holds championships in six classifications with most sports crowing state titles in three classifications.

As expected, Loudoun's 13 schools fell into three classifications: 5A (Briar Woods, Broad Run, Freedom, Potomac Falls, Stone Bridge, Tuscarora), 4A (Dominion, Heritage, Loudoun County, Park View, Woodgrove) and 3A (Champe, Loudoun Valley).

News: Pedestrian Hit and Killed on Route 7; Second Such Fatality in Sterling Within a Month

(Dec. 10, 2012) - Loudoun County Sheriff's reported that a 39-year-old female from Fairfax was travelling westbound on Route 7 near Davenport Drive in Sterling when she struck an adult male in the roadway just before 4 a.m.

The victim was taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.The victim has not been positively identified according to sheriff's reports Monday morning.

Just last month, popular Sanders Corner Elementary School principal Kathleen Hwang was struck and killed while walking near her home in Sterling the day before Thanksgiving.

Swim: Heritage Team Involved in Bus Crash on Way to Meet; Accident Sends 7 to Hospital with Minor Injuries

(Dec. 10, 2012) - A Loudoun County Public School bus en route to Manassas with approximately 30 high school students from the Heritage High School swim team on board was involved in a two vehicle crash on Friday evening south of Leesburg.

Football: Rolin Sacks South Carolina, Swaps Commitment to SEC Rival Florida

(Dec. 10, 2012) - Briar Woods High School senior standout Matt Rolin, committed to the University of Carolina since May, has changed his commitment to one of the Gamecocks SEC Rivals, the University of Florida over the weekend.

Rolin, a 4-star linebacker, had nearly 30 offers before initially choosing USC, a school he has strong family ties to. The 6-foot-4, 215-pound Rolin is recovering from a knee injury -- the surgery South Carolina recruiting sites report was performed by the Gamecocks team doctor -- that knocked him out of the VHSL playoffs in the regional quarterfinals.
