Football: Rolin Sacks South Carolina, Swaps Commitment to SEC Rival Florida

(Dec. 10, 2012) - Briar Woods High School senior standout Matt Rolin, committed to the University of Carolina since May, has changed his commitment to one of the Gamecocks SEC Rivals, the University of Florida over the weekend.

Rolin, a 4-star linebacker, had nearly 30 offers before initially choosing USC, a school he has strong family ties to. The 6-foot-4, 215-pound Rolin is recovering from a knee injury -- the surgery South Carolina recruiting sites report was performed by the Gamecocks team doctor -- that knocked him out of the VHSL playoffs in the regional quarterfinals.

Women's Soccer: Broad Run Grad Holly King Named SEC Defensive Player of the Year

(Oct. 30, 2012) - University of Florida seniors Erika Tymrak (Bradenton, Fla.) and Broad Run High School grad Holly King (Ashburn, Va.) picked up Southeastern Conference Players of the Year honors and are joined by two other Gators on 2012 All-Southeastern Conference teams, the league office announced Monday afternoon.

Tymrak is the first Gator named the SEC Offensive Player of the Year since the league began in 2005 announcing a SEC Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year. King is the SEC Defensive Player of the Year and is the third Gator since 2009 to earn the honor. A Gator has now picked up a SEC Player of the Year honor 12 times in the program’s history.

Olympics: Middleburg Academy Grad Azania Stewart Playing for Host Great Britain in Olympics

Middleburg (July 30, 2012) - Azania Stewart, who graduated from Middleburg Academy (then Notre Dame Academy) in 2008, is playing for Great Britain's 12-member Olympic basketball squad, a team making its first-ever appearance in the international games.

London, her hometown, had been announced as the venue for the 2012 games just as Stewart arrived in Middleburg, at age 15, to begin her U.S. high school career.

Soccer: Broad Run Grad Holly King Signs with D.C. United Women

(May 10, 2012) - Broad Run High School grad and rising University of Florida senior Holly King is one of six local players to sign with the D.C. United Women pro-am team for the summer season. Also signing, pending league approval, were Danielle DeLisle (Virginia), Katie Yenson (Virginia Tech), Molly Menchel (Virginia), Diana Weigel (William & Mary) and Katy Colas (Duke).

D.C. United Women fans will get a look at these former local youth standouts turned college stars - beginning this Saturday when Boston Breakers visit the Maryland SoccerPlex for a preseason exhibition.

"It's exciting to be bringing in top-flight players from some of the elite soccer schools in the country," said Head Coach Mike Jorden. "Florida, Duke, UVA, William & Mary and Virginia Tech all have great tradition and it will be interesting to see their styles mesh on the same field for us this summer."

Perhaps the most promising of the group of six is King, a three-year starter at Florida. King led the Gators in minutes on the pitch last season as a junior and recorded three goals and three assists. She is a former two-time Virginia state player of the year from her time at Broad Run High School, where she was also a part of two state championship teams. King played for the Washington Freedom program from 2008-2009, and this summer makes her return to the D.C. soccer scene.

(Dec. 19,. 2011) - Broad Run High School grad Holly King was one of three University of Florida juniors appear on National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-South Region teams. The three shares the lead among all programs represented in the first and second 2011 All-South Region teams.

Two Gators – Erika Tymrak (Lakewood Ranch, Fla.) and Kathryn Williamson (McKinney, Texas) – are All-South Region first-team selections. King (Ashburn, Va.) appears on the region’s second team.

College Corner: Broad Run Grad King Named to All-SEC Soccer Second Team

(Nov. 1, 2011) - Broad Run High School grad Holly King, a junior midfielder at the University of Florida, has been named to the All-Southeastern Conference women's soccer second team.

King has started in 19 matches for the Gators and scored against then No. 5 Florida State and against Vanderbilt and assisted on  the golden goal in a win over then No. 22 Auburn. She averages 75.5 minutes per match for the Gators, 14-6 overall. Florida is the No. 4 seed in the SEC tournament which will be held in Orange Beach, Ala. with an opening match Wednesday Nov. 2 against No. 5 seed Georgia.
