Gymnastics: Top Marks of 2011-12 Season Updated Prior to States

Gymnastics: Stone Bridge Makes States with Regional Runner-up Finish; Severin and Grywatch Lead Bulldogs with Strong All-Around Performances

 Stone Bridge Gymnastics: Next Stop States! 

(Feb. 11, 2011) - After coming tantalizingly close the past two years to making the VHSL AAA state gymnastics tournament -- missing each time by less than a point -- Stone Bridge High School vaulted to the big show for the first time in school history with a runner-up finish Thursday night at the Northern Region meet.

The Bulldogs scored a season-best 143.375 to secure the second and final spot to States behind regional champion Chantilly (144.575).

Senior Tori Severin, scoring her best All-Around score of the year by almost two full points, led the Bulldogs and qualified for States in the individual All-Around with a third place finish of 37.050.

"It was very emotional and exciting to place second as a team, especialy because it is my senior year," said Severin. "I am so proud of the whole team! We worked so hard for it, and it paid off."

Bulldog sophomore Tricia Grywatch, like Severin, turning in her best All-Around performance of the year, scored 36.150 for a sixth place overall finish.

Severin was second on the beam at 9.725 and sixth on the bars at 9.075. Grywatch tied for seventh on the Vault at 9.200 and tied for eighth on the floor at 9.275.

It was on the floor where the Bulldogs secured their first ever team trip to States as Shelby Keye took fourth with a 9.400 and Amy Fissmer was fifth at 9.350 to give Stone Bridge three athletes on the awards podium for the event. Stone Bridge out-scored third place Washington-Lee by a full 2.525 on the floor, more than enough to leave the Generals 1.200 behind Stone Bridge in the final standings.

(Feb. 3, 2011) - VivaLoudoun has updated its top scores for the 2010-11 high school gymnastics season through last weekend's district meets.

Athletes are ranked according to top marks in All-Around, vault, bars, beam and floor as well as a ranking of teams. Scores are current through meets this week.

Gymnastics: Loudoun Valley Captures Red Division Title at 30th Annual Park View Invitational

Sterling (Jan. 11, 2010) - For the first time since 2002, Loudoun Valley High School came away with the upper division title at the Park View High School Gymnastics Invitational, edging local rivals Stone Bridge and Broad Run Saturday in the 30th edition of the longest running high school athletic event in Loudoun County.

In the Red Division of the event sponsored by Glory Days Grill, Loudoun Valley finished first with 103.8 points (top three gymnasts scored for each team). Stone Bridge was runner-up up 102.825 followed by Broad Run (101.725), Colonial Forge (101.3) and Loudoun County (101.25).

Colonial Forge's Laura Thornburg, who captured the beam with a 9.625, took the All-Around with a 36.075. Loudoun County's Jessica Drews was runner-up at 35.275 followed by Kimberlin Ewen of Broad Run and Amanda Huebner of Loudoun Valley at 35.2. Drea Ewen took fifth with a 34.975.

Huebner won the floor with a 9.35. Drea Ewen won the bars with a 9.1. Lindsay Carr of Colonial Forge won the vault with 9.05.

Dominion captured the Blue Division with a 91.2 followed by Briar Woods (88.65), Harrisonburg (83.375), Orange (82.7) and host Park View (78.125).

Alexa Giovanis, who won the vault with a 9.25, led Dominion and captured the All Around with a 34.625 followed by Michaela Connally of North Stafford (33.875), Ayanna Robinson of Dominion (33.55), Brittany Zartman of Park View (32.225) and Marina Kiseleva of Briar Woods (32.05).

Robinson won the floor with an 8.75. Connally won the beam with 9.325 and bars with an 8.25.

There were 15 total teams at the event including all 10 Loudoun high schools.
