Men's Lacrosse: Stone Bridge Grad Derek Maltz Nets Game Winner with 19.2 Seconds Left to Send Syracuse into National Title Game

(May 26, 2013) - All it takes is one goal and junior Derek Maltz (Stone Bridge High School/2010) provided it. He picked up a rebound in front of the Denver cage and scored with 19.2 seconds left to propel No. 1 seed Syracuse (16-3) to 9-8 victory against the fourth-seeded Pioneers (14-5) in the NCAA men's lacrosse semifinals Saturday, May 25 at Lincoln Financial Field. Maltz's goal capped a furious rally that saw the Orange tally five of the game's last six goals to overcome a 7-4 deficit entering the fourth quarter. Loudoun Valley High School grad Chris Daddio was 2 of 4 on faceoffs in the win for Syrscuse. Maltz, Daddio and the Orange will play Duke on Monday, May 27, at 1 p.m. for the national championship.

(May 24, 2013) - You can catch a couple of local grads on national TV Saturday as Stone Bridge High School grad Derek Maltz and Loudoun Valley High School grad Chris Daddio will take the field for Syracuse University as the top-ranked Orange take on No. 4 Denver at 5 p.m. in the NCAA Final Four at Lincoln Financial Field in Phileadelphia.

The other other semifinal pits No. 7 Duke against unranked Cornell at 2:30 p.m.

Boys Lacrosse: Dominion SR Cody Farmer to Play at Stevenson University

Sterling (Dec. 30, 2012) - Dominion High School senior Cody Farmer has committed to play men's lacrosse next year at NCAA Division III Stevenson University in Maryland. Farmer will join his older brother Troy, a freshman at Stevenson, on the Mustangs roster.

Farmer helped Dominion make its first ever VHSL state tournament appearance in 2012 as a junior. Farmer's club team is Madlax.

Boys Lacrosse: Briar Woods Senior Patrick Fleming to Play Next Year at Christopher Newport University

Ashburn (Sept. 5, 2012) - The fourth straight year a Briar Woods High School boys lacrosse athlete has committed to play in college as senior Patrick Fleming verbally committed to play at Christopher Newport University next year. 

Fleming at attack has helped the Falcons captured the last two Dulles District regular-season and tournament championships. The Christopher Newport 2012 men's lacrosse roster included five players from Loudoun: Griffin Donovan (Heritage), Zakary Burkhard (Heritage), Hunter Conrath (Loudoun Valley), Michael Mabry (Broad Run) and Ricky Reyes (Stone Bridge).

 

Men's Lacrosse: Freedom Grad Will Walter Helps Team to Perfect Run at 2012 Champion All American Showcase

(July 30, 2012) - Freedom High School 2012 graduate Will Walter was selected and participated in the 2012 Champion All American Showcase on July 25-27 at Lake Buena Vista, Fla. Walter helped his team to a 4-0 mark in the tournament and the championship game was televised on ESPNU over the weekend.

Boys Lacrosse: Stone Bridge Goalie Jesse Southward Commits to Play at Limestone College

(Jan. 18, 2012) - Stone Bridge High School senior goalie Jesse Southward has verbally committed to play men's lacrosse next year at NCAA Division II Limestone College in Gaffney, S.C.

Limestone is a Christian non-denominational liberal arts school with 3,500 students that was first established in 1845 as a women's college and became coeducational in the late 1960s. The Saints men's lacrosse team went a record-tying 15-2 last year and qualified for the NCAA tournament for a record 12th straight year.

Southward was a Cheers Sports Athlete of the Month in 2011 and was named Liberty District first team at goalie. He posted a season-high 20 saves against Chantilly and had 16 saves in a 8-6 win over Westfield and 16 saves in a 8-6 loss to Madison in the Liberty District semifinals. He finished his junior campaign with 155 saves in 15 matches.
