Men's Lacrosse: Stone Bridge Grad Derek Maltz Nets Game Winner with 19.2 Seconds Left to Send Syracuse into National Title Game

(May 26, 2013) - All it takes is one goal and junior Derek Maltz (Stone Bridge High School/2010) provided it. He picked up a rebound in front of the Denver cage and scored with 19.2 seconds left to propel No. 1 seed Syracuse (16-3) to 9-8 victory against the fourth-seeded Pioneers (14-5) in the NCAA men's lacrosse semifinals Saturday, May 25 at Lincoln Financial Field. Maltz's goal capped a furious rally that saw the Orange tally five of the game's last six goals to overcome a 7-4 deficit entering the fourth quarter. Loudoun Valley High School grad Chris Daddio was 2 of 4 on faceoffs in the win for Syrscuse. Maltz, Daddio and the Orange will play Duke on Monday, May 27, at 1 p.m. for the national championship.

(May 24, 2013) - You can catch a couple of local grads on national TV Saturday as Stone Bridge High School grad Derek Maltz and Loudoun Valley High School grad Chris Daddio will take the field for Syracuse University as the top-ranked Orange take on No. 4 Denver at 5 p.m. in the NCAA Final Four at Lincoln Financial Field in Phileadelphia.

The other other semifinal pits No. 7 Duke against unranked Cornell at 2:30 p.m.

(March 6, 2012) - Stone Bridge High School grad Derek Maltz, Syracuse men’s lacrosse sophomore attackman, was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll on Monday March 5, for his five-point performance in the Orange’s 14-10 loss at No. 1 Virginia. Maltz set career highs in goals (3) and assists (2) in the contest.

Maltz had a hand in all four of SU’s second-half goals against the Cavaliers. He scored three and assisted on one in the fourth quarter. He was also credited with an assist during a 5-0 second-quarter run that helped the Orange to 6-4 halftime advantage.

Maltz is the first Orange player to record a five-point game this season and he currently leads the team in both points (10) and goals (7). Read More on Derek Maltz

Lacrosse: Maltz Continues Family Tradition as Rising Stone Bridge Junior Commits to Syracuse

(July 12, 2011) - Stone Bridge High School rising junior Dylan Maltz is continuing the family tradition as the Bulldog has verbally committed to play lacrosse at Syracuse University. Maltz's brother Derek is a rising sophomore with the Syracuse program and his father, also named Derek, played on Syracuse's 1983 National Championship squad.

Football: 7th Heaven - Stone Bridge's Burns Picks Up Offer from Syracuse

(Mar. 22, 2010) - Stone Bridge High School 6-foot-7 defensive linemen picked up his seventh NCAA Division I offer as Syracuse joined a growing list of schools after Burns talent on the football field including Boston College, Duke, Maryland, Stanford, Virginia and Wake Forest.

Burns reports that he had a "a very nice visit with UVA at their spring practice on Saturday."

Later that day, Burns stopped by the Rivals.Com Five Star Academy in Richmond. When he returned home head the latest official offers, from Boston College and Syracuse.

"That brings the total number of BCS offers to seven. Deciding is going to be very, very difficult because all of the schools have something positive to offer," reported Burns. "I'm going to try and do more campus visits over the next few weeks."

Girls Soccer: Bishop O'Connell's Moriarty to Play at Syracuse

(Feb. 25, 2010) - Bishop O'Connell High School senior and Ashburn resident Jackie Moriarty will play soccer next year for Syracuse according to the Potomac Soccer Wire.

Moriarty has played club soccer with the Bethesda (Md) Dragons since 2006 and before that was with the RFC Rangers. She also played with the Virginia State ODP program from 2006 to 2008.

Ashburn (Nov. 19, 2009) - It was triple the celebration at Stone Bridge High School on Monday as friends, family and staff turned out to watch three seniors sign NCAA Division I Letters of Intent -- Taylor Lambke who will play baseball at George Washington, Derek Maltz who will play lacrosse at Syracuse, and Holly Kramer who will play lacrosse at William and Mary.

Purcellville (Nov. 18, 2009) - Loudoun Valley High School seniors Christopher Daddio and Garrett Swankowski made their intentions official last Thursday afternoon when they both signed in front of family, friends and adminstrators NCAA Division I Letters of Intent to continue their education and play collegiate lacrosse, Daddio at Syracuse and Swankowski at Virginia.

Daddio is a 2-time first team All-District midfielder (Cedar Run District) as well as a 2-time first team Northwest Region midfielder and 2-time Washington Post ALL-MET honorable mention selection. Next fall Daddio will be joining the 11-time National Champion Syracuse Orangemen.

The 3-year varsity starter who follows in a great tradition of face-off midfielders from LV (brother Kyle Daddio, J.D. Harkey). In his three years at Valley, Daddio has won 78 percent of face-offs, establishing him as one of the best face-off men in the state and arguably the nation.

Swankowski is a 2-time first team All-District defensemen (Cedar Run District) and a 2-time first team Northwest region defensemen. Swankowski earned a 2009 Washington Post ALL-MET second team selection as well as ALL-AMERICAN honors for his play during the 2009 season.

He has established himself as one the best defensemen in the country. During the 2009 season Garrett amassed over 50 take-aways and 68 ground balls leading the LV defense to an eye-popping 3.9 goals/against average. He will be taking his talents to Charlottesville where he will play for the UVA Cavaliers.
