Baseball: New VHSL Pitching Rules

(April 5, 2013) - One of the biggest adjustments for local baseball teams this spring is the new VHSL rules on pitching. With many teams playing several games in a week because of earlier postponements, the rules are coming into play in a big way and we will also see it be a factor come playoff time.

Previously, the rules for pitching were fairly simple as a pitcher couldn't throw more than 10 innings in two consecutive calendar days.

Baseball: VHSL Adopts New Pitching Limits

(Dec. 12, 2012) - The Virginia High School League has approved new pitching limits for the coming spring season with pitchers being limited to nine innings in one day and no more than 14 innings of work in a 7-day span.

Previously pitchers were limited to 10 innings of work in two consecutive days.

The trickiest part of the new rules is they are much more complex than the previous limits with different requirements for days of rest depending on if a pitcher goes one inning, two to three innings, four to seven innings or eight to nine innings in his initial outing to start the 7-day span.
