Girls Lacrosse: Broad Run SR Heidi Smith Signs to Play at the University of Louisville

Ashburn (Dec. 26, 2012) - Broad Run High School held a college signing on December 11th, 2012 for one of its most talented players to come through the Spartan girls lacrosse program in years. Senior Heidi Smith has committed to play NCAA Division I lacrosse for the University of Louisville Cardinals in Kentucky.

Smith has started for the Spartans since the day she stepped on the lacrosse field at the Broad Run campus. As a freshman she started at lower defense and as her career blossomed she became the focal point of the team as its starting center of the past several years.

In 2012, Smith led the Spartans back into the Regional’s for the first time since 2009. She led the team with 72 goals and 20 assists. Her game was not just on the offensive end.

Her coach Sean Duritsa said: “She is the best all around player in the county, region, and beyond. There is nothing on the lacrosse field that she cannot do! She is equally talented on offense as on defense, she does everything great. Heidi is a true leader on and off the field.”



In 2012 she was voted to the 1st team All-District (Cedar Run District) and 1st team All-Regional (Northwest Region) as a midfielder. She was also selected as the 2012 Player of the Year for the Cedar Run District.

Smith’s lacrosse career started in third grade where she fell in love with the game. As she got older she started playing club lacrosse. She played for Upper Corner from middle school through 9th grade. Seeking a higher level of play, she switched to Capital Lacrosse for her sophomore and junior year and blossomed with the higher competition.

Lacrosse has not been her only passion. She has been riding horses since she was six years old and competing since she was eight.

“Horses have always been a big part of my life and will continue to be, even as I play college lacrosse” said Smith.

She has maintained a GPA of 4.10 or higher at Broad Run and at the Academy of Science (AOS), while taking a rigorous academic schedule of AP and honors classes. At AOS she has been working on an Alzheimer’s disease project in collaboration with Hwa Chong Institute in Singapore, where she visited this past summer. Smith has been part of the National Honors Society for the past two years and she also referees girls lacrosse youth leagues.

Smith plans to study bio/pre-med at Louisville.
