Breaking News: Shooting at Costco in Sterling Leaves Woman Dead, Deputy Wounded

(May 29, 2013) - According to local media reports there was a shooting at Costco in Sterling this afternoon and among the two wounded is a Loudoun County Sheriff's deputy. We are following this breaking story and will update it as information becomes available.

4:07 p.m.: Loudoun County Sheriff's released this statement: The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office is investigating a shooting that just occurred at the Costco in Sterling. The area is contained and secure at this time. An investigation is underway.

5:02 p.m.: WTOP is reporting that a woman is dead from today's incident that started out as a disorderly conduct call. A deputy has been wounded and is being treated.

5:05 p.m.: Washington Post is reporting that the woman killed worked in food preparation at the Costco in Sterling.

5:10 p.m.: Leesburg Today story has an assistant manager at Costco calling the woman at the center of the shooting a "customer demonstration services provider". Article also says wounded deputy was on cell phone while being taken out on stretcher, which would be great news.

5:15 p.m. WJLA is reporting that the woman killed was brandishing a knife and that deputies attemped to "Taser" her before shooting her.

5:19 p.m. NBC News4 is reporting that all shots fired were by one deputy and that the deputy wounded was shot in the leg during the altercation.

You can bike all the way to work or even part of the way to work and participate. Throughout the metropolitan Washington region, thousands of bicyclists  will take place in this annual Bike to Work Day event, enjoying free t-shirts, refreshments and giveaways at more than 50 pit stops. News: Loudoun Special Olympics Seek Spring Coaching Volunteers

(Feb. 27, 2013) - Loudoun Special Olympics is seeking volunteers to help with their spring sports program.

There are head coaches in place but they would like volunteers to assist with weekly practices. You don’t need to be an expert in the sport, just willing to help our athletes and be dedicated to the program. Sports include: tennis, bowling, softball, swimming, golf, track and field. Practice times and locations.

News: Officials Issue Home Heating Safety Reminders in Wake of Sterling Townhouse Fire

(Jan. 22, 2013) - Loudoun County fire officials are reminding residents to take safety precautions when heating their homes during this extended cold spell. The reminder comes after a townhouse fire in Sterling that caused an estimated $50,000 in damage.

Fire and rescue units from Cascades, Sterling Park, Lansdowne, and Fairfax County responded to the scene at 290 Chelmsford Court in Sterling, at about 8:30 p.m., Monday, January 21, 2013. Arriving units reported fire from the roof of a two-story, end unit townhome. The occupants, who were alerted to the fire by neighbors, were able to get out of the house prior to arrival of fire and rescue crews.

Football: Six Loudoun Teams Ready to Make History Tonight

(Nov. 9, 2012) - Six Loudoun teams are ready to make history tonight as the VHSL playoff start. For Woodgrove, playing at Loudoun County in the Region II Division 4 quarterfinals, it is the school's first ever playoff, while Tuscarora is making its second straight appearance by hosting Millboork also in D4.

Briar Woods, the top seed in D4, is making a fifth appearance and attempting to win a third straight state title.

Stone Bridge in AAA has made 11 appearances since opening in 2000 while Loudoun's two oldest schools -- Loudoun County and Loudoun Valley -- have made nine appearances each. Here is a historical look at every Loudoun playoff game played since 1970 (start of modern era of VHSL athletics):

Redskins: Summer Training Camp Exits Loudoun in Favor of Richmond Science Museum Site

Richmond (Nov. 6, 2012) – Richmond Mayor Dwight C. Jones announced last month the city’s plan to develop the Leigh Street (Science Museum) site as the new home of Washington Redskins Summer Training Camp beginning in 2013. Redskins summer training camp has been held in recent years at the team's Ashburn headquarters in Loudoun County.

Soccer: NASL Announces Virginia Team to Begin Play in 2014 in Loudoun

Ashburn (Nov. 5, 2012) - VIP Sports & Entertainment announced Monday night in a press conference at Loudoun Soccer Park that it is partnering with Loudoun Professional Soccer, LLC, who have been awarded a franchise in the North American Soccer League (NASL). The franchise will debut in 2014 playing its home games at the future Ballpark located at One Loudoun in Ashburn.

News: More Trials, Means More Jury Duty for Loudoun Residents

(Aug. 16, 2012) - A significant increase in jury trials in Loudoun County means more jury duty for residents as Clerk of the Circuit Court Gary Clemens says approximately 40,000 juror questionnaires began arriving in area mailboxes yesterday.

"€œWe are experiencing significant increases in the number of jury trials and as a result we will need more jurors to be available," said Clemens.

Girls Basketball: Loudoun Team Set for Suburban All Star Game Sunday

(April 13, 2012) - Loudoun County High School girls basketball coach Derek Fisher will lead a squad of Loudoun seniors this Sunday in the Suburban All Start game set for 1 p.m. at Oakton High School.

The Loudoun all stars will play all stars from the AAA Northern Region (Concord and National Districts). At 3 p.m., Prince William County all stars will play all stars from the AAA Patriot and Liberty Districts

The games are presented by the Northern Virginia Women's Basketball Coaches Association. Admission is $5.
