News: Celebrate America Recycles Day on Nov. 15

(Nov. 12, 2012) - The Loudoun County Department of Construction and Waste Management encourages everyone to celebrate America Recycles Day on Thursday, November 15. The goal of America Recycles Day is to raise public awareness of the economic, environmental, and public health benefits associated with recycling, and to motivate people to recycle more. For the past 15 years, millions of people have observed America Recycles Day by pledging to improve their recycling habits at work, at home, and on the go. In Loudoun County, recycling places valuable resources back into the manufacturing stream rather than into the waste stream and conserves space in our local landfill for items that are not so easily recycled.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the recycling and remanufacturing industries account for over one million jobs and more than $100 billion in revenue. In the southeastern United States alone, including Virginia, manufacturers of recycled products employ over 47,000 workers and earn more than $29 billion annually.

By choosing to recycle, Loudoun County residents and businesses diverted nearly 100,000 tons of material from disposal last year, conserving the energy equivalent to an amount of coal that would fill a train five miles long.
