Girls Volleyball: One for the Thumb! Loudoun County Rallies for 5th AA State Title in Six Years

Richmond (Nov. 19, 2012) - The Loudoun County High School girls volleyball team started out fast Saturday in the VHSL AA state title match at VCU, but then found themselves down 2-1 to Hidden Valley, and trailing big in the 4th set, 16-10. 

With their dream of a state championship fading away, the Raiders charged back to win the 4th and 5th sets to take the match 25-22, 20-25, 21-25, 25-21, 15-11. The Raiders rally brought home the program's 5th championship in six years, and ties the VHSL record of most girls volleyball titles with Cave Spring at five. 

Loudoun County won their 18th consecutive match and finished their season at 28-1 on the season. 

The Lady Raiders were led to victory by Megan Fox (53 assists, 14 digs, 3 kills, 9 service points, 1 ace), Maggie Phillips (18 kills, 14 digs, 11 service points, 1 ace, 1 block, 1 assist), Taylor Huewe (26 kills, 10 digs, 2 assists, 1 block), Jane Feddersen (7 kills, 4 blocks, 2 service points, 1 ace, 4 digs), Quinn O'Connell (6 kills, 3 assists, 1 dig), Kelsey Slack (22 digs, 8 service points, 3 aces, 3 assists, 1 kill), Emily Solis (8 service points, 10 digs), Kelsey Anderson (8 service points, 9 digs), Roberts (4 kills, 3 blocks), Mandy Powers (5 service points, 4 digs). 

After the 4th set rally, County still found themselves down 8-6 midway through the final set. A service error by Hidden Valley followed by a block by Roberts and O'Connell tied it up.

Huewe then caught fire with three straight kills to put the Raiders up 11-8. Hidden Valley's block responded with back to back stuffs to make it 11-10 but their next attack sailed long to put the Raiders within three points of the title, 12-10.

Anderson dropped in a service winner and O'Connell's kill brought it to match point. Hidden Valley was able to save the match one time but Phillips did the honors of clinching another title celebration's for one of Loudoun's greatest dynasties in prep athletic history.

State Semifinals

Loudoun County started out slow, but came back to win the first set and cruise to a 25-18, 25-16, 25-13 victory over EC Glass High School in the VHSL AA state semifinals. The Lady Raiders move on to face Hidden Valley in the finals -- a rematch of the 2008 final.

Loudoun County won their 17th consecutive match and improved to 27-1 on the season.
