Baseball: Heritage SR Lorenzo Calderon to Play Next Year for New Marymount University Program

Leesburg (Nov. 29, 2012) - Heritage High School senior centerfielder Lorenzo Calderon has committed to play next year at Marymount University in Arlington. It will be Marymount's first season as the school announced in August it was adding baseball for 2014.

“Marymount is thrilled to be fielding the first baseball team in its history,” university president Dr. Matthew Shank said. “We believe that baseball will provide another great option for student-athletes who want to receive an outstanding education and compete at the college level. As the president of Marymount and a former college baseball player, I can't wait for opening day in the spring of 2014!”

Calderon holds many of the Pride's baseball records. Calderon was named second team all-Cedar Run District in 2011 and first team all-Dulles District in 2012.

Baseball is the fourth sport announced by Marymount in the past year with the prior additions of men’s volleyball and men’s and women’s triathlon. Marymount last expanded its athletic offerings in 2003, with the addition of men’s and women’s cross country.

All 10 current and future CAC programs compete in baseball, one of just six sports to have all programs participate. Current CAC teams include Frostburg State, Salisbury, St. Mary’s (Md.), Wesley, and York (Pa.) while newcomers Christopher Newport, Penn State-Harrisburg, and Southern Virginia will join the Saints as new baseball squads for the 2014 campaign.
