(March 20, 2013) - Park View High School grad Emily Nykorchuk is off to a torrid start for her sophomore softball season at the University of Mary Washington, hitting .469 in 11 games with a .781 slugging percentage.

The catcher has 15 hits, including five doubles, a triple and home run along with 13 RBIs. While at Park View she was a 3-year starter behind the plate.

Her freshman year at Mary Washington she hit played in nine games with a .333 average in nine at-bats.

College Corner: Tuscarora Grad Mayflower Sailing Along for Mary Washington Baseball

(May 19, 2013) - Tuscarora High School grad Bernie Mayflower worked five scoreless innings on March 13, allowing just two hits, to pick up the 6-0 win for the University of Mary Washington baseball team over Catholic University.

Mayflower is 2-0 in his freshman season with 14 hits and only one walk allowed in 21 innings pitched. Opponents are hitting just .187 against Mayflower who has a 1.71 ERA.

College Corner: Broad Run Grad Johnson Averages Double Digits for Mary Washington Hoops; Valley Grad Yoxthimer Gets Starts as FR

Fredericksburg (March 13, 2013) - Broad Run High School grad Taylor "T-Bone" Johnson averaged 10.9 points per game and 5.6 rebounds per game for the University of Mary Washington men's basketball team this season.


Mary Washington's season ended on Feb. 21 when they fell 89-81 in the Capital Athletic Conference semifinals to No. 1 seed St. Mary's (Md.) Seahawks. Johnson, a 6-foot-3 sophomore guard, scored 14 points off the bench in the loss.

Johnson played in 25 games for Mary Washington (14-13 record) with 17 starts. He shot 47.2 percent from the field including 44.9 percent from 3-point range. Johnson scored 19 twice -- at North Carolina Wesleyan on Nov. 28 and against Emory and Henry on Jan. 2 -- and scored 18 twice -- against Maryland Bible on Nov. 25 and against Marymount on Feb. 2.

Mary Washington also has Loudoun Valley grad John Yoxthimer on the roster. The 6-5 freshman forward played in 26 games with 7 starts. He averaged 2.7 points per game on sizzling shooting of 61.7 percent from the field and he averaged 2.0 rebounds per contest.

(Feb. 19, 2013) - Stone Bridge High School held a signing ceremony for senior catcher Olivia Tatara who has committed to play softball next year at the University of Mary Washington. Tatara helped the Bulldogs win the AAA Northern Region title and go 24-3.

(Feb. 8, 2013) - Stone Bridge High School senior catcher Olivia Tatara announced this week that she has committed to play softball next year at the University of Mary Washington. Tatara helped the Bulldogs win the AAA Northern Region title and go 24-3. The school will hold a ceremony for Tatara on Feb. 14.

Leesburg (May 4, 2012) - Tuscarora High School senior Bernie Mayflower, who hasn't allowed a run in the Huskies last two wins with a 4-hitter over Heritage and a 1-hitter against Park View, was the well-deserved center of attention Thursday afternoon as the baseball program celebrated his commitment to play baseball next year at University of Mary Washington.

The NCAA Division III Eagles have sent 12 players onto the professional ranks under head coach Tom Sheridan who started the program in 1988. Over the years, Mary Washington has made 11 NCAA tournament appearances and the Eagles have won 20+ games in 10 of the last 11 seasons.

Girls Lacrosse: Loudoun County SR Rachel Solis Commits to Mary Washington

(April 13, 2012) - Loudoun County High School girls lacrosse two-time team MVP, Rachel Solis, has committed to continue her career at NCAA Division III Mary Washington next year.

Solis informed UMW coach Dana Hall of her decision to attend UMW this week and is excited about joining the Eagles, according to Raider athletic director Ken Wright.

Solis currently holds six school records at LCHS, including career goals (212) and goals in a season (95). For her accomplishments, she was also named to the first team All Dulles District as a junior last year.

Wright: "The Athletic Department at LCHS is very proud of Rachel and elated that her hard work and dedication have paid off. Congratulations to Rachel and her family."

News: Freedom Celebrates its Largest Athletic Class to Move to the Next Level

Girls Soccer: Freedom Players Make College Choices - Seniors Perrett and Abraham to Play NCAA D3 and Juniors Ullrich and Ivey Make Early D1 Verbals

South Riding (Apr. 14, 2011) - The Freedom High School girls soccer program announced this week that four on its roster have made their college choices with seniors Jenna Abraham and Sarah Perrett to play NCAA Division III next year and juniors Rachel Ivey and Mallory Ullrich make verbal commitments to play Division I soccer.

Starting in the fall, Abraham will play at Mary Washington and Perrett will play at Christopher Newport. Starting in 2012-13, Ivey will play at VCU and Ullrich will play at UNC Greensboro.

Basketball: Broad Run's Taylor Johnson to Play at Mary Washington Next Year

(Apr. 7, 2011) - Broad Run High School senior Taylor "T-Bone" Johnson has committed to play basketball next year at NCAA Division III Mary Washington University.

Johnson was an all-Dulles District selection both his junior (first team) and senior (second team) seasons, helping the Spartans to the Region II playoffs. Johnson averaged 17 points a game this past season

"His style of play made him a fan favorite in the Dulles District and he is excited to play at Mary Washington next year," said Broad Run coach John Costello.

Former Freedom High School 1,000-point career scorer Henry Brisibe was a junior at Mary Washington this past season.

Softball: Briar Woods Senior Jillian Olson to Play Softball at Mary Washington

Ashburn (Mar. 28, 2011) - Briar Woods High School senior catcher Jillian Olson is going to play softball next year at NCAA Division III University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg.

Olson helped the Falcons to a Dulles District tournament title her sophomore season and a perfect run through the district last year as the Falcons took both the tournament and regular season titles. Briar Woods finished with a school-record 21-4 mark as they were the Region II runner-up before their season ended in the state quarterfinals at Powhatan.

Olson was named second-team all-Dulles District.

Mary Washington is 12-18 this season, including 4-2 in the Capital Athletic Conference. Stone Bridge grad, junior Amanda Adams is the starting centerfielder for the Eagles.
