Basketball: Tuesday Night Scoreboad and The Skinny

Kayla Sweet and Chrystal Oden talk about Loudoun Valley's win over Heritage Tuesday.


(Jan. 20, 2010) - AAA teams took the spotlight Tuesday and Loudoun Valley boys and girls swept Heritage in Cedar Run action while the Stone Bridge boys and girls were swept by Marshall in Liberty District play. And in non-district action, the top AA girls team in the state, Freedom, fell to D.C. area power Riverdale Baptist.

The Skinny: Marshall, with a crushing advantage in rebounding (25-10 in the first half) put a halt to Stone Bridge's run. The Bulldogs were within five heading into the final quarter but Marshall's Daniel McClain was hot with 30 points and Stanley Watts went 7 of 8 from the foul line down the stretch. The Statemen hit eight 3-pointers in the win. SB was held to 29 total rebounds. Nik Brown led SB with 25 and Richie Berry added 18.

The Skinny: The Vikes cruised in a meeting with AAA district rival Pride, with four players in double digits: Kyle Kohnen (10 pts, 7 reb), Cody Mangano (13 pts, 6 reb), Django DeGree (11 pts, 7 reb) and John Yoxthimer (11 pts, 9 reb). No Heritage player scored more than six points.

The Skinny: Murielle Tiernan led SB with 11 points and Sakai Williams added eight but SB suffered a setback at home to fall two games out of the Liberty District lead.

Loudoun Valley 56, Heritage 43
The Skinny: Kayla Sweet threw down 24 and Chrystal Oden added 17 as the Vikes cruised on the road in Leesburg to maintain second place in the Cedar Run District.

Vikes coach Jen Piccolomini said that her team used "multiple defenses, and an attacking offense to get the win. Defensive pressure by Lisa Beksel kept the Pride’s point guards at bay."

And Owen Gotimer reported for VivaLoudoun from the game: "Valley's Kayla Sweet came out shooting hot, scoring eight in the first quarter. She, along with her fellow Vikings, went into the second quarter up 15-9.

Loudoun Valley's Chrystal Oden and Heritage's Erika Grabbi both matched Sweet's first quarter scoring with eight each in the second, as the Vikings went into half time up 31-22.

The Pride played their strongest quarter (the 3rd) of the game so far coming out of halftime, but still trailed Valley 42-35 going into the fourth. For the third consecutive Cedar Run contest the Pride fell short, losing 43-56.

As Heritage's head coach Anthony Long said after the game, "You have to play all four quarters."

Analysis of Heritage by Gotimer: For the second straight game Heritage went in, heads held high, expecting to be part of a competitive game, but once again they missed on their scoring opportunities. This, along with Valley's tremendous driving, sneaky back door cuts, and well-organized paint-centered offense, is what led to the seemingly one-sided battle. If Heritage can string together four straight solid quarters, they could have a shot at second place in the Cedar Run District.
